Health & Support why do i binge sometimes? Mar 07 2009

Getting refined sugar out of my diet helped the most for me.  Having a blood sugar level that is on even keel is important.  Getting 8 hours of sleep is another must.  I reduced my calories recently only to find that I was more than likely too low.  This also made me want to binge out.  I have upped them for now to get my metabolism back up before I lower them again.  Everyone is a little different.  Best of luck to you.

That's what I did.  I use honey to sweeten stuff.  I eat fruit to satisfy my sweet cravings.  Everyone is a little different.  I believe the less chemical sweeteners used and the more natural less processed or not processed at all the better.  But that is my take.  Good luck!

I agree with pseudolink.  My experience has been similar.  There are times that my body will hold on to water and then all of a sudden, the scale will drop 3 pounds in 2 days.

Tape measurements and body fat measurements have been extremely satisfying when the scale wasn't moving.  I could see those moving while the scale wasn't.  Also I learned for me a BMI of 25 is about the lowest I will want to go because of the muscle I am carrying is throwing off the calculation, under 25 my body fat will be too low for good health.  I also keep a log of how much weight I have lost in the last 30 to 35 days.  It usually shows about 6 pounds.  Sometimes more and sometimes less, but it lets me know I am making progress.

Don't loose hope, weight loss is more science and art rather than mathematics.  However over the long run, the math will play out!

Are you loosing weight too quickly or not fast enough?  By your calorie deficit, you should hit your goal in 3 to 4 months tops!

By my calculations from your stats, your BMR should be 1650 calories.  So dropping to 1200 calories in your diet is OK providing you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.  Couple the 500 calorie drop from exercise should equate to a 2 pound a week drop.  Don't count on this being a predictable number on a weekly basis.  On a month to month basis it will average out very close that that number.

Now if you are only using the scale as your form of measurement - in the immortal words of Gomer Pyle USMC "Shame! Shame! Shame!"  You females have it tough enough with hormone cycles and mood changes that go with it, now throw in a little water retention, a bad day, hop on the scale and ta-da instant depression!  Compare month over month results with the scale but also consider measuring body fat percentage and tape measure results as well.

With your exercise, if you are trading muscle for fat, the scale won't budge but you will look like a goddess in the mirror and you will be the envy of your friends on how your clothes fit you!  Measuring body fat percentage helps make sense of this and your tape measure will also show the results.

All in all, I think your program is a sound one, just give it some time and measure the results a couple of other ways. - Best wishes!

I cut refined sugar out of my diet.  Now if I need a sweet, I reach for a piece of fruit.  That put a lot of binging in control for me.  Also eating a third to half of my daily calories at breakfast helps set up the day where I don't over eat at the rest of my meals.

I hope that helps.  Good luck!

Weight Loss HELP losing weight fast...please read i know its long (sorry!!) Jan 10 2009

By my calculations you are at a BMI of 20.  You are already at the low end of a healthy range.  Your stats indicate that a 1700 calorie a day diet would maintain your current weight if you didn't exercise.

Your plan is very similar to my own.  I try to create a 500 calorie a day drop through what I eat.  I also try to burn an additional 500 calories through exercise.  At the end of the week on average, I have burned 7000 calories which means I should loose 2 pounds per week.  Does this happen week to week? NOOOOOO!!!  On a month to month basis yes, it averages out.  With you being a female and subject to hormonal changes throughout the month, weight fluctuations come with the territory.  You may wish to start monitoring your body fat and body measurements as well.  That will help with whatever information the scale is telling you.  The mirror on the wall and how your clothes fit are also helpful tools.

Having exercise as part of you plan is great.  Make sure you do resistance exercises (weight lifting, swimming, calinestenics, etc.) for muscle development.  This keeps the pounds/kilos off.  Also cardio is important as well, this helps take them off.  Just remember when you replace fat with muscle, the scale won't budge!  However, your body fat percentage will.  That is why I say it is important to monitor body fat.  As a female, you don't want to go below a 17% body fat percentage.  Fat is a tool for your body and your body values fat over muscle because it uses fat for hormone production.  If you body fat goes to low, your hormone levels get screwed up and this will tend to mess up brain and other functions as well.

The bottom line as I see it is by the picture you posted, you are quite a cutie and any gentleman should be very happy to be seen with you!  Don't loose any more weight, you will loose all those beautiful curves the good Lord gave you.  Focus your diet on getting sound nutrition to make sure your body gets all the nutrients and vitamins it needs for optimum health and function, keep up the exercises and it will all fall into place!

Sorry for being so long winded - Best Wishes!

I don't know the extent of your jaw surgery but if you are able to kick it in gear check out www.crossfit.com.  I have found that one of their work outs will kick your butt!  I would agree with the other posts about mixing up your workout.  Crossfit is rooted in military special ops fitness training and is an excellent way to build endurance as well as strength.

Another way to get motivated is to set some goals for yourself.  You can set nutritional goals and fitness goals.  This may give you the needed kick you are looking for.

I too cut refined sugar out of my diet.  It was one of the best things I did for my eating and my body.  I also will only sweeten with more natural sweeteners such as honey, or molasses.

The first three days were the worst.  After that I never looked back.  I put a post out several months ago titled "Sugar = The Blues" and it was not unusual to run into others who had similar results with odd items clearing up.  I had mental blocks, those went away along with snoring, inflammation in my hands, getting control over my appetite as well as dropping 15 pounds right off of the bat with no effort.  Now only on special occasions will I have something with refined sugar in it.

I look at sugar like low grade rat poison.  If people only realized how bad it is for you, they would change their diet in a New York minute!

My guess (since it is finals) is you are burning the candle on both ends and are not getting enough sleep.  The stress isn't helping either.  Sometimes my work throws me into stressful situations which bumps my appetite, and when I am getting only 6 hours of sleep, coupled with the stress - WOW! will my appetite go through the roof!

Also there may be a temptation to snack on sugary treats especially if your energy level is going down and you need to study more.  The rise and fall in blood sugar levels also will trigger your appetite.

My suggestion is to get at least 8 hours of sleep for the next couple of days and lay low on any sugar or high carb foods that convert to sugar in your blood.  If this is not possible due to the demands of your studies and deadlines, try not to eat past full and when exams are over and you can get some sleep see if everything doesn't go back to normal.

Fitness Working Out with Back Injury Dec 01 2008

My back acts up from time to time and it is no fun working out when it out of alignment.  I recently had it go out slightly while I was doing some dead lifts.  I cinched my weight belt down as tight as it would go and finished out the set.  Yeah not so bright but it worked and I went to my chiropractor that afternoon.

Perhaps swimming may be a better exercise to get the weight off of the joints.  You can do it for a couple of weeks and then transition into the bike and other machines until you know your back will take the strain.

Your back injury may be a result of over training if you are a workoutaholic.  There are some good articles out on the web on this topic.  I have a shoulder that is starting to act up with the weather and I suspect that it is from this very thing.  Just a thought

Take care!

I own a scale that measures body fat.  It has two small metal strips that you put each foot on and it measures it electronically.  I also have a set of skin fold calipers to confirm my body fat numbers with the scale.  With a good set of batteries, my scale will vary about 1%.  I have been very pleased with it.

I track my weight and fitness progress four ways.  One is the scale.  If used by itself, it is one of the worst ways to judge progress in my opinion.  Secondly is a tape measure, third is measuring body fat and fourth is mirror mirror on the wall.  If you have a good resistance training exercise program (lifting weights, gymnastics, calisthenics, etc) then measuring your body fat percentage is paramount to your mental health.  The reason I say it that way is you will drive yourself nuts if you work out, put on muscle weight and not even shed so much as one pound!  Sure your clothes fit fantastic, people say you look great but you think you are a looser because your scale says you didn't do anything!

My goal is to get down to 170 pounds (77.3kg), that is where my BMI will be under 25.  I track my body fat closely now because I do not want it going under 10% because I will then start cutting into the fat that stores vitamins and the fat my body uses for hormone production.  If I don't see 170 because my body fat is too low I won't be disappointed.

I started with a BF% of over 30, now it is down to 22%.  I have lost 45 pounds (20kg).  When the scale says that I haven't lost any weight but my body fat percentage is lower, or the tape measure says that I have put on inches in the right spot and taken off inches around my gut, that motivates me to keep going no matter what the scale says!

First of all, get back on the horse and ride cowgirl!  This week has been horrible for me as far as my calorie intake goes because of the holiday.  Tomorrow I kick my butt back in gear and get back on track.

I usually eat about 1800 calories and I track my nutrition using Fit Day software.  At 1800 calories, it is tough to get all the nutrients that my body needs.  When I am hitting on all eight cylinders, my hunger is non existent.  Also look at your calories over a week's time and don't worry about the day to day.

Other things that have noticed that make me want to eat like a horse are sugary foods or foods that will raise my blood sugar level, lack of sleep, and lack of nutrition.  If you are missing in any of those three areas, your battle will start going up hill.

Why did you stop exercising?  You're a hottie!  Get back and start exercising again!  Good quality exercise for a half an hour 4 days a week does wonders for self esteem as well as health and so on!

Blessing and best to you!

The best you can do is remove yourself from the temptation.  When you get a moment, analyze what nutrition you are getting or not getting.  If you are missing out on key nutrients, your body may be kicking in your appetite.

Keep your refined sugar intake very low, get at least 8 hours of sleep and make sure you are hydrated.  This will lessen the body's response to want to eat when it doesn't need it.

If you fall off of the wagon, dust yourself off and get back up and ride again.  We have all been there, young and old! - Best wishes!

Motivation Weight Loss Strategy - Marital Advise Needed Nov 20 2008

Everyone brings up good insight.  I think my best tact is to keep my big mouth shut!  Being loving and reassuring is a sure help.  I think one way that I have inspired her to expand her horizons was by what was not said rather that what was said.  Although this was with a computer, she would always ask for help and never learn because she could always ask me.  The unspoken word was she was capable.  With that extra confidence, she learned and has gone so far as to put together a website for her home school cooperative!

I don't think she will "unhinge her jaw and bite my head off" but she may get somewhat depressed.  I would never say anything insulting or derogatory but I sure could see myself making a suggestion that would be totally taken the wrong way.  I will be very careful of those statements.  I do like the suggestions of exercising together.  It will take some schedule rearranging but I think it is doable!

Fitness Help me form an exercise plan? Nov 07 2008

Recommending exercise plans are about as personal as picking underwear.  I can however, make some general recommendations.

First off - nutrition!!! nutrition!!! nutrition!!!, if I didn't stress it enough I will be of no help to you.  Make sure your body gets the proper nutrition (as well as sleep).  Your body will be unresponsive otherwise to the effort you put in.  To build muscle, you will need protein and your body will need all the other vitamins and minerals to build healthy cells and have good metabolism.

If you are looking for overall health, do various types of exercise and change your routine about every 30 days.  Stick to exercise plans that have a bit of high intensity to them.  You want to include aerobic as well as anaerobic exercises (cardio and resistance).  If you wish to build muscle, weight lifting is the best way to do it.  Usually in a couple of months. you will notice results.

You will also need to monitor your body fat percentage.  For women, you want to keep 16 to 20% for optimum health and fitness.  If you go below that range you will start cutting into the fat reserves that you body uses for hormone production.  Female athletes run in this range.

You may want to check out some of the body building web sites like bodybuilding.com.  The principles are the same for body building as they are for body shaping.  Don't worry about becoming like some muscle bound hulk either.  This takes far more energy and obsession than the average person is willing to endure and it takes a long time to get like that.

Crossfit.com is also an excellent website for overall fitness.

Best Wishes!

There are several different ways:

One way is to use a calculation.  This may get you in the ball park.  http://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/bod yfat.htm

One easy way is to buy a scale with that feature built in ("Thinner" by Con-Air) is the one I have.  These scales pass a small electrical current through the body and measure the impedance to calculate body fat percentage.  http://www.conair.com/thinner-digital-body-bo dy-water-scale-p-555.html

Another way is to buy a set of body fat calipers and measure skin folds.  These run about $20+ dollars.  The draw back is in the hands of a novice, they are prone to error.  http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/bodyfatc alipers.html

The last one I know of is to go to a sports medicine place that has a dunk tank where your weight is measured under water and the amount of water you displace is also measured.

Hope this helps.

Weight Loss How Much Cardio? Oct 26 2008

I do cardio 3 times per week for a half an hour.  I also lift weights 6 times a week alternating between upper and lower body to keep from loosing muscle mass.  My calories I keep at 500 under my metabolic rate.  I lost 8 pounds in the last month.

I gotta say that the cardio seems to take it off when I am faithful to doing it.  However, since I have added weight lifting, the weight is staying off.

Fitness Goal Setting on a Cut. Oct 23 2008

I've been tracking my body fat percentage.  I have a scale (Thinner by Con-Air) that measures body fat percentages.  I have been at a plateau for almost 2 weeks and I have not lost a pound!  I am exercising 45 minutes to an hour and a half a day so you may see my frustration setting in.

I checked my body fat percentage and I was down .2%.  It may not seem like a bunch but from last week to this week that means I traded a half pound of fat for muscle!  Over the last month, I lost 4 pounds and all but 1/2 pound was pure fat.

I am looking forward to the end of the month when I get out the tape measure and remeasure myself.  The scale is only one of several tool I use.  My plans are to buy a set of body fat calipers since they are only $20.  The trick to those from what I read is you have to develop a "feel" for them

As for the food, check out Jack LaLanne.  He has some pretty decent Ideas about eating healthy.

I have never heard of it but by the sounds of it and by looking on the website, I think it would be very hard on the body.  I can't help but be somewhat skeptical.

My recommendation is to make life style changes rather than look to the latest fad diet.  You would have far better success and less money invested.  If you substitute unhealthy habits for healthy ones, eventually it will pay off.  I would also recommend making the changes as you are ready to make them.  Otherwise, it may be like pounding a round peg in a square hole.

In my photo which was taken this past April, I was about 240 pounds.  I am now down to 204.  This was in a span of 5 months.  Here is what paid the biggest dividends for me:

1   I got rid of refined sugar in my diet.

2   I set my calorie limit to 500 less than what my body burns at a sedentary rate and adjust it about every other month.

3   I exercise regularly (weight lifting and tread mill)

4   I get 8 hours of sleep a night.

5   I eat a lot more raw vegetables (better nutrition)

The weight loss for me has been so easy, I wish I had done this years ago!  Mind you, I didn't make all these changes at once but they all paid off in their own little way.  Here is a good link with sound practical advice.  http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/hugo21.htm

Weight Gain Ideal Weight? Sep 19 2008

Kudos to you for taking steps to get healthy!

My mom was a runway model in New York during the early 60's around the height of the Kennedy administration and Jacki - O fashion craze.  She carried a BMI of 22.  for a woman of your height, that would put you at 140 to 145.

A healthy weight range falls within a BMI of 18.5 to just under 25.  That would put you between a 120 and 159 pound range.  However, this is for the average person.  If you exercise and and have a low body fat percentage, these numbers may become meaningless.

If I could encourage you, ignore your scale and measure your body fat.  Some high tech scales have this function, or this can be done with a cheap $20 set of body calipers.  A healthy body fat percentage for females should be between 20% and 30% but not lower than 15%.  Believe it or not, your body actually needs fat to make hormones and when it doesn't have that's when things get messed up.

Blessings, I hope this helps and gives nutrition for thought!

Original Post by quintanion:

After reading about the numerous benefits of weight training, I'm interested in adding it to my routine.  Thing is, I've never done any kind of weights before and don't really know where to start.  I've read good things about the New Rules of lifting for women book, but can you learn to do so safely and put together a good routine from a book?  Or should I try to fit in a class or maybe a session with a trainer to get started?  I do have access to a very nice college gym with plenty of machines and free weights available

I lift and do cardio on a treadmill.  I have lifted on and off since my teen years.  There are many body building websites out there that can show you a number of good exercises and what muscle groups that they will work.  These are great help for putting together a routine.

Once you have a routine together, I would recommend working out with someone who knows what they are doing at first.  Good form is crucial for developing the intended muscles as well as not getting hurt.  A good example of this would be doing leg squats.  Without good form on this exercise, it is very easy to throw out your back and get hurt.  Someone to spot and give pointers on form can be a great help.

Being that you have access to a college gym, ask the person watching over the gym for people who can be of assistance.  They will know the regulars and who could be of help.  This could be a good cost effective way to learn to do it the right way.

Machines tend to be safer in some regards (if they are set up properly) but you will develop other muscles by using free weights.  These other muscles are used to stabilize and balance the weight.  Make your best choice in that regard.  Remember that soreness lasts about a week and you will be better off to work through it.

Best wishes, I hope that this is of some help!

Weight Loss Is there a difference in quality of calories? Sep 09 2008
02:35 (UTC)
5

Yes, calories are calories, but the difference lies in the nutrients within the foods.  Your body runs on glucose which is a very simple sugar (molecularly speaking).  If you eat fruit, you will ingest fructose.  This is a more complex sugar.  The body will convert it to glucose but to break it down, it needs certain vitamins and minerals to do its job.  Thankfully in fruit and natural foods, it tends to come more with the vitamins and minerals to make this happen.

If you drink regular soda, it also contains a variety of fructose from corn syrup.  Same sugar in the body but minus all the nutrients to help break it down.  Your body still needs to break it down to get rid of it so now it starts pulling nutrients out of it's stores.  This is where people get into trouble with obesity and other illnesses related to vitamin deficiencies.

As to why you have more energy and are losing weight while you are eating healthy foods goes back to the nutrient stores in your body.  At one point in my life I did a series of fasts.  Once I got past the 4 day mark, my energy level shot way up.  The reason being was my body was pulling energy from fat stores and lean muscle.  The same is true when you have proper nutrition, the body is able to take it from fat stores and convert what it needs readily.

A certain percentage of fat on your body is very healthy.  The body uses fat for hormone production, vitamin storage, energy, and a source of hydration.  With proper vitamin and mineral stores, your body will know what to do with the food it get.  Follow Jack LaLanne's advise - "If man made it, don't eat it!" and "If it tastes good, spit it out!"

No I am not an expert but I have done a fair amount of reading on this topic and I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.Smile

It's normal to fall off the wagon from time to time.  Dust yourself off and go on with business as usual.  One day won't hurt you.  It's when the problem becomes habitual which in turn becomes a life style, then it is an issue.

Focus on a healthy life style.  If you have an ED and your bathroom scale is a major freak out if you go up or down a pound, throw it out!  Use a tape measure and monitor your body fat percentage as a guide.

When you substitute unhealthy habits for healthy habits, you will be amazed at how well the good Lord meant for you to look and feel!  Remember, it needs to be a life style, not a one time deal that you are doing to get over a hump and then you go back to old ways.  Make these changes slowly.  It is also human nature to overwhelm ourselves with too many changes.Smile
