Health & Support Stretch Marks!! Nov 18 2008

I have a lot of stretch marks - but I suddenly realised yesterday that they have faded a lot. I have been using an intensive moisturiser every day when I get out of the shower for about a year because my skin is dry.

It is not an expensive moisturiser either - very basic petroleum jelly ... it seems to work better than any of the fancy stuff!

Weight Loss Reducing calories to compensate for lack of exercise? Oct 15 2008

How about choosing low-fat and low GI foods (e.g. brown bread and pasta, beans etc.) so that you are getting all your calories?

1500 calories a day is not really that much, it adds up quickly!

Also, could you go for a walk at lunchtime? Even just 20 mins or so around the block, it would probably make you feel better about the lack of exercise.

Thanks for the replies. I am learning a lot about calorie burning since buying this monitor!

I guess I always deliberately underestimated how much I was burning to stop myself for eating too much for dinner afterwards. :)

Well I am no cardio expert but i does not sound like it is that good for you. You are putting your body under stress.

What are you hoping to achieve? In the long term, moderate aerobic exercise is probably going to be more beneficial.

I read somewhere that top athetes e.g. professional marathon runners do not live as long as "normal" people because of the stress their hearts have been under. I am not 100% sure if that is true, but it makes sense. You can go too far with exercise.

What is your diet like? It sounds to me like you are already doing enough exercise. Maybe cut out fats, eat less meat and dairy, add an extra workout to your weekly routine e.g. go swimming for an hour or lift some weights.

As you are in the healthy weight range I am not sure why you want to cut calories - you do not need to lose weight. Focus on eating natural, healthy food, avoid takeouts etc ... and keep up the exercise.

I think it depends on the time of day you feel most energetic. For me that is about 3 -5 pm, so I am going to put the most effort into my workout then and get the most out of it.

If you feel you have a lot of energy at 9 pm, go for it. If you dread working out then, maybe you should consider scheduling it for another time of the day.

I have a ton of clothes waiting in a drawer until I finally fit into them! Personally I find it discouraging to buy clothes that I'm too "fat" to fit into ...

instead, I prefer to put a small amount of money into savings each week, and window shop. If I set a target, i.e. eventually reaching a weight of xxx .. then I can go out and spend all the money on new clothes.

And I know I will have more fun because they will fit and I will look great in them!

Erinread,

One glass of wine a day is fine, but doctors recommend two completely alcohol-free days a week. I would have your small glass five days a week - but it is not essential so don't force yourself! Also watch out that you don't start liking it too much ; )

The problems start when you have a bottle on Saturday with friends, then half a bottle for the next five days, then maybe go to a party and have some beers ... it all adds up to a dangerous amount.

You know what, I have been drinking a couple of glasses of wine a night for a few years now, just a kind of habit. But then the doctor said my red blood cell count was high which can be bad news healthwise .... I have realised that even if the alcohol does not affect your behavior or your life in any way, regular drinking is BAD for you. It will slowly damage the system inside out and you won't even know it's happening.

So get him to talk to a doctor about it maybe, and try to cut down slowly till he is drinking just a few nights a week, and then only in moderation - that level of drinking should be fine.

Wow what a great story! I admire your willpower, and it is inspiring because I am trying to do similar at the moment. I do only have 1 cup of coffee and 1 cigarette a day, but my BP is 140/90 and as I am only 29, this is a worry to me!

I am focussing on getting fitter and losing around 50 lbs (currently 165 - 10 lost so far) and hope this will help - along with giving up junk food!

Good luck with the weight loss, and congratulations on lowering your BP!

Original Post by gi-jane:

The whole reason why people trying to lose weight are advised to 'eat more fruit and vegetables' is that they are very low in calories but high in bulk.  Especially true for vegetables.

You can eat as many vegetables as you want! Be more careful with fruit though because of the sugar content.

Personally, I would check your BMI/calorie intake etc. and then generally keep going as you are.

Lock the scales away for a feew weeks and set a date for weighing next month - to stop yourself getting obsessed!

The big changes to your body when you alter your diet and exercise more will take a couple of months - it does not happen overnight.

Stick to healthy food and regular exercise and things can only improve :)

Well I am puzzled!

What I would suggest is increasing your exercise. Maybe if you join a class doing some intense cardio, this might help give things a kick start. Try walking at a faster pace, and fit in a workout first thing in the morning if possible - a quick jog round the block, or some situps/trampoline/jumprope/jumping jacks, to encourage the fat-burning.

If you have been eating 1300 calories every day for months on end, and do exercise too, and are losing NO weight, you must not have enough of a deficit. Hope that helps!

Keep it up! This happened to me the other day and it turned out I was retianing water from all the exercise. Now I am 4 lbs lighter, a couple of days later, after drinking lots of water in the meantime.

Sounds like you have been a saint with the diet and are working really hard. Just don't give up!!!

OK, if you have been eating 1300 calories a day + doing an hour of exercise most days for 3 months, you SHOULD be losing weight.

Even in starvation mode - for that long a time you will eventually lose weight because the body needs to burn something to function.

I am wondering what exactly you are eating each day. Are you SURE it's only 1300 calories? Do you count all drinks, every spoonful of sugar, do you keep an eye on portion sizes? Maybe you are eating/drinking more than you think.

Do you drink alcohol? This can prevent the calories from being burned.

If you eat a lot of dairy and meat, try subsituting it for fish, pulses and vegetables. What you are doing now obviously is not working - try something new!

Best of luck! :)

Just because your friends and family have a high metabolism does not mean it is OK for them to constantly eat junk food. Their arteries will be getting clogged up with all that fat.

Just remember than when you watch your boyfriend tuck into his next mayonnaise sandwich. Not only are you losing weight, you are eating healthily and your body will thank you for it in the long run.

Why not take some friends and go on a weekend hike. Walk 40 miles, then see what your weight is after a great weekend away.

Maybe your body needs a bit of a shock, like some really intense exercise. And make sure not to eat extra!

Motivation Not feeling motivated to work out! Aug 28 2008
19:26 (UTC)

I have to admit I would not even be motivated to go to the gym for a week! I also find swimming up and down the swimming pool really tedious!

I like doing dance workouts on a DVD at home - it's fun and you can do it first thing in the morning before a shower or at night and it takes up less time than going to the gym and back.

The classes are a great idea, you could also consider joining a team, e.g. soccer, or a walking/running/horse riding/tennis club where you will be socialising whilst working out so you don't get bored.

If you live near the coast and like the beach learn to surf. Or anything active really - exercise does not have to be a chore.

You could also try going on a detox diet for a few weeks if you are very determined - e.g. no alcohol or caffeine, lots of water and fresh fruit/vegeables/seeds. that should help reduce the cellulite.

Health & Support Insomnia =[ Aug 26 2008

I'm 29 and have problems with insomnia occassionally, here are my tips:

- First of all, your mom is right about avoiding drugs. You will become dependent on them and regret what you started!

- When you find you cannot sleep, don't stress about it. If you feel like lying in bed and letting your mind drift, do this and tell yourself it really does not matter if you fall asleep or not - you will just enjoy relaxing/resting. If you feel bored and restless, get up and do something for a couple of hours, e.g. read a book. Don't worry about sleep. Go back to bed when you feel ready.

The more you stress about insomnia, the worse it will get. Try to look at it positively as a few extra hours to do things rather than a frustrating situation.

- Try using lavender oil, it is relaxing and might help you fall asleep. I put a few drops on my pillow.

- Do plenty of exercise during the day. You will be physically tired and fall asleep more quickly.

- If anything is on your mind when you go to bed, write it in a diary.

- Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time - develop a routine.

- Eat three healthy meals a day, don't overeat or restrict food. It will not really be having an effect on your sleeping patterns.

I hope that helps!

I have been losing steadily and was very pleased, but when I stepped on the scales yesterday I had gained 4 lbs! I assumed it must be because I had just jogged a couple of miles and drank tons of water - but the lbs are still there today!

I really don't understand weight loss - it is so complicated. I guess you have to look at the long term changes, e.g. month to month, rather than daily weight changes

Weight Loss Am I sedentary? Aug 23 2008

Try mixing it up a bit to start losing weight again. In addition to your daily walking do something that will get your heartrate higher, e.g. jogging or aerobics, a couple of times a week for an hour. You could also try swimming.

Eat 1500 one day, then 2000 the next. This stops your body getting into a routine and you should lose those extra few lbs.

Hello, I'm aiming to lose around 20 lbs by the end of October too - at the moment I am 165 and ultimately hope to be 130 by December!

So I have a long way to go, but have already lost about 10, in three weeks. :)

I do 30 mins aerobics 6 times a week,  but should probably do more.

It's ten weeks till Halloween - and at an average 2-3 lbs a week, that's at least 20 lost by the end of October!

It sounds to me like you get plenty of exercise. You are losing weight at a healthy rate and will continue to do so if you keep going the way you are.

If you want to lose faster, just cut back on 200 or so calories a day for a while.
