yoga DVD's are CRAP, even for me, and i'm very experienced and have studied under renowned yogis. crap. it's not yoga. it's hard to even develop a personal practice w/o craning your neck at the tv or listening to someone talk, even w years of experience. |

eat nuts, beans, more soy milk. use a low cal/low fat/low carb dressing for your veggies, not soy sauce. mix different beans, nuts with the rice/pasta dishes you're eating. eat nuts throughout the day with your fruit. stay away from canned fruit, drenched in sugar and fat. eat ezekiel bread and kashi golean cereal. worldwide protein shakes -- 170cals, 35g protein, 1-3g carbs, 1g fat and i promisethe chocolate and vanilla ones taste good. try meat alternatives like morningstar farms, trader joes, etc. try for yogurt with lower sugar content, lower cals, but same amount of protein, and eat more of it. |

| Weight Loss | I've lost about 8 lbs., has my body been eating itself for protein? | Aug 23 2008 00:55 (UTC) |

But I really don't work out that much -- that activity log is for 6 weeks. And I only just started running in the past week or so. And yoga is strength training, probably more so than the stretching component. And I do strength train after I run... I do lifts with my arms with 10-12 lbs. weights each.
Is it possible that I had a lot of water weight (adds to lean mass) and then it dropped when I started working out and now I don't have as much? 5.8 lbs. of water weight? Also, when I took that body fat measurement, I had been dieting for 2 weeks prior (calories at 1200-1300 a day), but didn't get to work out until a few days before that, but lightly. |

I'm a vegetarian -- protein comes with carbs, I can't separate them. High protein grains, protein bars, beans, etc... the only thing that isn't carb heavy is fake meat (soy protein), but that's not supposed to be consumed in large quantities, and it's exensive. I don't eat anything besides fruit that's not combining protein w/ carbs (and some fat) except for fruit, which fills me up, and the once-a-week 200cal, 30g carb dark chocolate bar.
I don't do much cardio. This is my entire activity log, though i don't usually log the walking around the city or to and from the gym, but it's not cardio.

| Fitness | Fitness standard times for 1 mile run? | Aug 10 2008 12:06 (UTC) |
17 |
Well yesterday I got on the treadmill and I set my pace to a 14:00 mile and ran/jogged up until I was at .85 miles, then I ran at 6.3 MPH, and in the end got a 12:56 mile in 1.06 miles.. I was proud of myself because I remember running the mile run in gym class and running (prob real fast, then not being able to maintain) and being out of breath after walking the end for a 14 minute mile, and when I was on cross country and in better shape, I still remember 11:42 being my best time.. that's when I was like, 12 too. I haven't ran since I was 14 or something (I'm 17) so I decided to start off steady and keep my pace at what I used to be out of breath for (14:00). Since I sprinted at the end, I was tired, but totally able to walk around after that and not panting at all. I didn't, but I'm sure I could talk when I was maintaining my 14:00 mile. No delayed onset soreness today either, which I remember after running for the first time in a long time (and I lifted weights afterward, and was out of breath on the stairclimber before, and walked 5 min uphill at brisk pace before, so I wasn't starting out fresh)
So, what should I aim for next time? Maybe the pace at 13:00 and then sprint in the last .2 miles? Sprint at maybe 6.5?
Then, eventually, to get to 10:00, I should maybe do a 10:30 mile pace for .8 miles (8:24), then sprint for .2 miles at 8:00 pace (1:46).. to be AT 10. I just don't want to do that roo fast because then I will get sore and unmotivated and never return to it. I'm glad I chose a steady pace for my first run...
Any running strategists out there? |

But how could a 10 minute mile be average..?? With so many obese people and overweight people who can't walk without losing their breath?? And office workers of normal weight who lead a sedentary lifestyle?

| Weight Loss | I photoshopped myself to see what I will look like at lower weights.... accurate?? | Aug 07 2008 20:10 (UTC) |

No, I like the weight which says 125, which I guess now would be 135, which has been my goal now for a while (133). But I just want to know the accurate amount of weight i want to lose to look the way i want to look, and it could be anywhere from 10-30 lbs... which is a big difference. i just don't know what I will look like at these weights, so it's hard to know if I will still be dieting in a month, or in 4 months.... |

Yeah, the 135 does look like me at 145 more so. Ok, so then shift everything by 10 lbs. Then I would be stick thin at 130? |

| Weight Loss | Does it look like I've lost any weight? | Aug 07 2008 19:04 (UTC) |

Weird, I thought it was wishful thinking. The first one is me at like, 158 (weighed with clothes on) at 5'6, and the second one... I think, with the same clothes on, is around 153 or 154... not sure because I don't weigh at a consistent time each day, and the other day it was 160 because I had a lot of fluid in my system, and oly a few days before that it was 151.5, but I didn't have clothes and I'm pretty sure I was carrying very little food, if any, in my body.
So that's like, 5 lbs. difference. And the pics in my profile are like 10 lbs lighter than that (145 ish) from a year ago. I wish I knew what I would look like at 135, 130.. |

I think light is good. Lots of walking is what light activity is, then record the running. I personally don't know if I'm sedentary or light... I don't have a set schedule, job, etc. right now, I'm a teen so I'm out of school, but I live in the city so I walk a lot, but not every day, and I spend a lot of time reading during the day. Plus I'm a teen so my metabolism is different, so I really have no clue... I would put it at light but I don't want to overestimate. |

| Weight Loss | Frame Size Inaccurate? | Jul 31 2008 20:57 (UTC) |
1 |
the elbow breadth puts me at about medium, but really...
the standards state differences of millimeters from small to medium, medium to large, and we're doing this by holding our own fingers to our own elbow (squeezing the bone under the fat or lightly holding the fat around it?? that could be a centimeter or 2 difference depending on how you do it), then lowing your hand to a ruler or whatever... millimeters lost/gained midair, and you're in another category.
the best tool is your body fat% get between 15-25 if you're a girl and you're healthy. from there it's person choice and very subjective. |

| Weight Loss | Frame Size Inaccurate? | Jul 31 2008 20:46 (UTC) |

Yeah, I have very small hands with very short fingers (so wrist measurement is inaccurate), but when I wrap around they just touch, which puts me at medium. so if i had normal sized hands, i would definitely be a small. ....but even when I wasn't packing a few extra pounds, and was very lean and athletic as a child, you could still tell I was "big boned"... my huge hip bones would poke out of the top of my jeans, my shoulder blades jutted out of my back when i picked up something, and i've always just had a solid build.... there is no way in hell i'm small boned. maybe medium-large.
look at my pics. i'm solid. i do not have a small frame. no chance in hell. |

I used to love meat when I was little... my dad was a hunter, etc. and we always had steak around... and hamburgers, etc. But one day I lifted the bun of my hamburger and saw this nasty, lumpy disc of muscle, half eaten, and i felt sick to the bone. so i stopped eating that burger, and was never able to consume a bite after that... but never once craved it either.
then i felt so much better and was wondering why because i ate whatever i wanted and just felt healthy and clean so i looked into what meat does to you and was even more disgusted than seeing it in person, up close, lumpy with bits of fat in it and this god-awful color nobody would consume if it weren't hidden by a bun. i learned how hard it is for your body to digest a foreign animal's body part, how it was killed months before it gets to you, freeze dried, etc... and the health effects... how vegetarians live on average 10 years longer and if they start young are and average of 1-2 inches taller, have less crud and blockage in the digestive system, always have better heart health and sexual health, and are just cleaner and healthier all around. |

Did I hear Albertsons? Well that's your problem. Switch to a different grocery store and I guarantee a 30% reduction without changing any of your habits.
Also, if you live where I lived in Southern California, groceries are much more expensive than anywhere else in the country because we have unions, etc. and the workers are better taken care of. I go to school on the east coast and was surprise at how cheap food was for the rest of the country. At Albertsons, a pound of butter was like $5 in LA. Also, my family has always lived in wealthy neighborhoods but my mother is a very smart shopper and knows that traveling one zip code away changes the market completely.
Also: Trader Joe's.
Now I live alone in the city (talk about markup) but have been doing fine, and I don't cook for myself, but that's my lifestyle. I live off of produce from TJ's and the farmer's market, and Kashi/Powerbar/Luna bars, Kashi cereal... and various TJ oddities. |

Also, at mid 140's, I was at around 20% body fat, which means my lean mass stayed the same even after I gained (and lost 10 lbs.)... so it looks like on my high lean mass body, that's the case. |
|||
| Weight Loss | My goal weight is healthy, right? | Jul 28 2008 06:58 (UTC) |

Average for all weight loss is 75% fat loss, 25% muscle loss. But I will be strength training and eating adequate protein and lots of glycogen after I workout to recover the muscle. The fitness expert I met will said my lean mass should stay the same. |
|||
| Weight Loss | My goal weight is healthy, right? | Jul 28 2008 05:50 (UTC) |
7 |
If my lean mass stays the same through just losing fat and not muscle (if I strength train and eat adequate protein it should not change), then my body fat at that weight will be easy to calculate. My lean mass is 115, at 135 I would have 20 lbs of fat on my body, for 15% of my total mass. |

| Weight Loss | Out of curiousity, how many of you are Vegetarians/Vegans? | Jul 27 2008 19:34 (UTC) |
5 |
I'm a vegetarian, practically vegan. The only non-vegan products I eat are like, the chocolate on top of my protein bars, and every now and then if I go out some cheese on a burrito or something.
We're more conscious of what we eat (especially hardcore vegans), but we have to work harder to get low-calorie protein (not just protein -- that's easy) while dieting. |

the less you eat, the less your metabolism is fired, the less you burn. if you eat little for 75% of the day time, and then eat a big meal, i don't see how your body isn't going to cling onto that heavy dinner since it's been lightly "starving" all day. i'm pretty sure your metabolism is optimal when you eat "small meals often, spaced evenly throughout the day".. i'm pretty sure that still holds true. |

So ridiculous. If you're using your msucles, if you strength train, your body will eat fat and glycogen to build and restore the muscles. otherwise, average is 75% fat, 25% lean mass lost. |
