Hey girls.  thought I would check in.  I am not doing weigh ins still (if you recall last spring I wasn't either)  b/c they tend to discourage me more than encourage me.  As I tend to hold my weight steady for 2-4 weeks then drop 3-4 # overnight.  This funky pattern causes me to get discouraged and then I cheat on my diet when I know if I just hold steady everything will be fine.   So I am not using the scale.

I can say, however, that my clothes are baggier.  So we are moving in the right direction.  I am really excited about this cut b/c I have more muscles than I have ever had before, it will be fun to reveal them all.  And I will post progress pictures later this spring.

Good work this week ladies!  Keep it up.

In short we go to costco every 1-2 weeks and buy two big bags of frozen chicken breasts.  1-2 bags of veggies.  Then 1-2X a week we go to the normal store for fruit, more veggies, deli turkey, cheese, yogurt, tofu, sauces, milk, eggs, bread, etc.  Our bill is $200-300 a week depending on the week.

My husband eats 3-5 chicken breasts a day!  yikes! And a dozen eggs at least everyother day (a common breakfast for him is 12 egg whites and two pieces whole wheat toast.).   Otherwise he eats golean Kashi cereal for Bfast.    And I wonder where our $$ goes!    He also has 1 turkey sandwich (w/ cheese) a day and a gigantic pile of veggies with each meal.  Sometimes we make pasta together (with chicken) at night, otherwise he eats the same thing he had for lunch :) He also has a protein shake before bed usually.

I eat oatbran + muscle milk for breakfast.  For the afternoon for me it is turkey sandwich (on whole wheat), lots of veggies, fruit, and a Pbar if I lift weights.  Evening is protein (either eggs, tofu, chicken or fish for me, or the rare beef product or shellfish) plus veggies again w/ NO pasta/bread/potato (usually).  He is always chicken + brocolli b/c he is picky.  Tonight I am having homemade chicken and bean soup that I made over the weekend but he will eat boiled chicken again.  He is soooo boring with food.

We also both eat a protein bar 2-3 times a week b/c we are lazy. But they are $$$!

your answer: increase your fiber, protein and water.

Do not underestimate the power of protein filled-breakfast to curb your apetite for the rest of the day.

There are a lot of good vegan and vegitarian protein powders out there, makes a good afternoon snack.   And the stuff they make with tofu now is amazing.  I am a meat eater but still eat a lot of tofu products b/c frankly I liek them. :)  so I know they are out there.  (My sis is a vegan)

Also 5-6 small meals is always better than 2-3 large ones.  For the waist line and the growly tummy.

Fat will not supply you with the building supplies you need to gain/build more muscle  (i assume you want to gain weight in the form of muscle not fat).

Yeah you need high calories but you also need lots of protein to gain

Most body builders will suggest you eat your weight in protein a day.  ie If you weigh 150# you should eat 150 grams of protein a day.  So eat lots. and fequent  meals are best and lift heavy!

YAY biking!

figure pricking really sucks.  The side of your finger is often better, as is your forearm.  And do not skimp, buy the little spring loaded contraption.  It makes it hurt much less.   It also seems to be less painful for those who knit or play guitar (tough fingers, all caloused).  Not that takign up the hobby would be worth it, just funny to note.

Just think about it as a few finger pricks now, opposed to a lifetime of insulin shots AND finger pricks.

Again wishing you the best and stay strong when the kiddos and the wife are snarking down dessert.  It is often hard from a social standpoint, just be creative.

i am proud to say that my dad after suffering w/ diabetes (incl.  insulin shots) for 10+ years has his 100% undercontrol w/o meds.  The answer: diet and exercise.

Diet: Sounds like you have a great start.  Your calories sound a little low,  though, I would suggest 1500 or so.  The biggest thing however is what you eat.  Whatch those carbs,  they sneak up on you.  (bread, pasta, potatos can be killers).  Easy answers:  when you buy a sandwich throw away one slice of bread, when you order a salad ask for them to hold the croutons, when you get a burger chuck a bun, skip the chips ask for a salad, etc.  You'd be suprised how accomadately places are to requests.   It is going to be a million small things that make the difference.  ANd eat lots of small (5-6) small meals are better than large ones and do not skip breakfast!  Protein is your best friend :)

I would also considering weighing/measuring all you food for  week or so.  Be sure your serving sizes are correct.

exercise:  Your biking is great.  My dad bikes ~60-70 miles a week and says the bike saved his life. And I believe it (he lost 100 pounds in 4 years).  Bike, walk, do some weights.  (I also enjoy 100+ miles of biking a week, so I am a little biased here)  Most importatnly pick something you enjoy.

Exercising will cause your fat to redistribute.  It will get burned from around/in between your muscles.  This is critical b/c the close proximity of fat to muscle is some of the cause of your insulin resistance that you are experiencing with Type 2 diabetes.  Gettign the fat off and muscles toned up are key!  You do not have to become a body builder but every little bit helps.

monitor:  You are new to diabetes and blood sugar monitoring.  Your doctor will not be on top of it.  YOU need to be your #1 advocate.  You need to monitor your blood sugar daily, morning (fasting) and 2 hrs after dinner.  WRITE THEM DOWN, and keep a food journal.  Even if your doc says you don not have to do this,  DO IT!  You will notice patterns in your eating, exercise and blood sugar.  This is the best way to educate yourself, so you can make the right choices for your body.  YOu'll be your own little science experiement :)

You can beat this!  you do not have to have diabetes for the rest of your life.  But you must be consistant and deticated.

Best of luck!

P.S. blue diamond makes great flavored nuts (incl  cinnamon and sugar), in proper serving size (1/4 cup)  they make a great dessert.

I feel better about eating game than farm-raised animals bc they had abetter quality of life.

I do not like those that hunt with bows n arrows though b/c it is not effecient.

I always buy free rabge eggs etc  for the same reason.  My dream is to have some land someday and raise my own meat and eggs, so I can insure a good life for the cows and chickens.

I firmly believe one can not avoid animal product entirely in our society so our job is to make sure that they are treated ethically.

Hahaha  not sure how inspiring I have been but thanks broadbent!

Looks like everyone is doing good.  Welcome newbies!

I do feel good this week, though.  I meet my calorie and macro goals everyday this past week.  (But my saturated fats were high on Tuesday) I am not weighing in though, as I tend to find the scale more annoying than motivating.

On the bad side, though, I did eat a small homemade scone on Thursday. yummy.   And I  also ate my normal "cheat" on friday of 2 pieces of pizza :)

I biked my 100 mile this week.  I also lifted weights last night (worked chest)and did the stairmill for an half hour.  I normally do not like to do cardio on the weekends but we were going over to friends and I wasn't sure what they were serving for dinner.  It turned out to be burgers, which was great I had a whole wheat bun + burger+cheese (I had keept my fat really low all day) and no mayo, no chips, no potato salad and no beer.  SO all in all it was a success.  Good after workout meal, lots o meat.   mmmmm.

I did mat pilates on Thursday.  Very fun to be back into that, it had been 4+ years.  Afterwards the instructor asked me  if I had ever done pilates reformers (which I had not)  then she gave me an hour free lesson! :)  WHat a blast!  (Reformers is the pilates with weights and machines)  I was really sore on Saturday after them.  I would love to do them again but I do not think that class is included in my package, I I do not want to spend the extra $$$.  But my back feels so good from all the pilates.  I think I will go to yoga this afternoon.

Now my up comming problem is Wednesday, which is my husbands bday, so that means eating out and cake.  As we will be going to mexican I think I will order chicken fajitas with extra veggies and not eat the tortillas, which takes care of dinner.  And I will not do alchohol, either.  But I do believe I will eat a piece of cake :)   Ok now that I wrote that out, I have to stick to it.

there has not been a "diet" so to speak.  keeping sweets downs and protein up  but the calories have been through the roof.  I loved me some bread :)  but I stayed really active.

But I need to watching those #s again.  So  I am back

And sorry for not giving any notice :(

I hear you with the crazy anxiety ridden friend.  I live with one and she is making life  pretty miserable sometimes.  She is a large part of the reason I think for my diet/weight lifting schedule has been so bad.  I am afraid to use the kitchen with her around, afraid to take showers late (so do not want to go to the gym in evenings if I can not shower)  etc etc....

WOW wow wow wow!!!

You guys are all doing so good.  You all look great! and I love all the positive love that is still flowing in this forum.  Plus everyone is still here! :)

I know it has been awhile (6months+).  I will forgo the excuses and just say "hi" instead and get you up to date.  I am still working on reading all the posts I missed (it may take me awhile).

I have been eating well (but large volumes).  Still doing cardio (100+ miles a week on the bike), hence why I eat a lot.    My weight lifting has fallen behind though,  I moved further from the gym,  extra long hours at work  blah blah blah.  But I need to make it a big priority again.  I miss how regular I was with it and I can not make the same inprovements without being regular about weights.  So i am back for some acountability girls!  I am counting on you :)

I got some extra poundage that I need to lose.  I feel great though (thank you biking) but need to start sliming down for bikini weather.  So next 15 weeks I am all buissness. :)  My plan:  bike 20 miles X 5 days a week (how i commute already, so no change there), weight lift 2-3 days and I fancy some pilates or yoga lately.  My work has some noon sessions at their wellness center that I think I want to go check out.  I would like to improve my flexibility and  I know I can not be counted on to stretch at home regularly. We will see, if I do better with classes...

And the big one: eat 2,000 calories M-F; 1,700 on Sat and Sun (non biking days).  and eat 100+ grams of protein a day.

Looking forward to reading more of your guys posts :)

other good food idea I have been enjoying...

Meat ideas:

I have been buying red snapper (a very lean meat) at the local farmers market and have been cooking it by breading it with oat bran mixed with celery powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.    It then cook it in a pan with pam.  Very yummy and fast.  Great with lemon juice and/or ketchup.  I think it is better then white-flour based breading by far.  The oat bran gives it a nuttier/richer falvor and more texture than white flour ever could, I will never go back.

Another meal I really enjoyed a few weeks ago was lamb shoulder (pretty fatty but a nice way to feel like I was cheating).  I got the lamb again from the local farmers market (grass fed).  I trimmed off all the fat I could from a shoulder cut.  Then rubbed curry and cloves (ground) on it, then sprinkled a little salt and peper and broiled.  Absolutely wondefully rich and delicious and it smelled fantastic (but my hands smelled like curry still the next day).  It would go great with some asparagues or brussel sprouts and/or some wild rice.

A veggies idea:  satay your veggies with balsamic vinager, it makes them sweet.  Add some orange juice and reduce to a thick sauce for a real treat.

whew!  well I am back from Vaca in Mexico and and now caught up on everyone's posts.  Great posting ladies, lots of good stuff.

So I enjoyed my vacations.  Ate whatever and lots and did not exercise, unless vollyball counts.  I do not feel bad because I only do this once a year.

So I am back and tan but feeling fat.  (I have not weighed to see the damage)  But i am back on the bandwagon again becaus eI know I gained.

simi-  your story cracked me up.  Reminds me of a story about my mom-in-law that happened over vacations.  She was sitting on the lounge chair by the pool and we were eating nachos so we  offered her some.  She thought about it for a second then said "Oh just two, thanks" and as soon as she grabbed them from the plate. WHAM! the whole chair collapsed with her in it.  It was hillarious.  (she laughed too)

Someone asked about new food ideas.  I have been enjoying my new lunch creation.  Turkey sanwich on wheat bread, but instead of lettuce I use fresh basil leaves and with sun-dried tomatos and a little pesto as a spread (if I have the calories).  Mmmm. good on a hot day.

irothell -- do not worry you did not gain 7# unless you ate 25,200 calories over your maintence this last week, which i seriously doubt.  Also know that the more muscle you have the more your weight will fluxuate, the more water you will retain during that time of the month.  So as your body composition continues to improve be prepared to see even more retention during that week.

I usually gain 3-5  but have been known sometimes to pack on 7# durign that week.  BTW I am currently at that time now and therefore I am not weighing myself at all during this week b/c it only discourages me.  And as I see it the scale should be there to help and motivate not to discourage.

bluenote-- congrats on 50#  what an acheivment!  bTW I am on BC (going on 3 years now) and I was starving when I started too.  i am not sure if it went away or I just got used to the feeling of being more hungry than normal.  I do know though that it made me more emotional and that has not gone away.

smiles-- mmm berries.  There is a farmers market at my work on Tuesday and I bought a bunch of strawberries yesterday from it.  None of them made it home I ate them all at work :)  I love berry season too.

simi -- glad you are gettign such great results.  I always measure my arms, hips(widest part) and thighs (biggest part) too.  Those are the areas I see the biggest changes in.  I never measure my chest though b/c I always lose boobage when dietign and that is just sad to see (b/c I do not have that much to spare).

And no, I do not do any direct ab workout.  Only what gets used with bench presh, deadlifts and running.  I do not do abs b/c abs (as I see it) are made in the kitchen.

I have been plannign to get the carmen elektra stip videos for awhile now.  But have never gotten aroudn to it.  But now that I know they are on demand i have no more excuses.  I think I will practice a lot by myself before I will let my husband watch or I will just crack myself up.  I find it hard to take myself attempting to be sexy as anything but hilarious.

smiles -- i also kind of want to get a tattoo to break out of my stereotype too.  (studious, non-partying, conservative)  BTW we are twins on our weigh in this week.  i am 131.8#  too  (a low for me)

dmart -- congrats on the weigh in!!

simi-  I wanted to wait to get a tattoo until i got married for the same reason.  Actually my husband was against it at first but once I showed him the design and where I wanted it he warmed up to it over the past year.  Plus he wants to get one too  (which I am all for).  His origional reson for not wanting me to get one is he didn't want other guys to "think things about me"  but I assured him I would get it somewhere discrete (where only he would see it)  so no lower back where it can flash in public, ever since then he has been all for it.  He thinks a few/small tats can be hot.

irothell -- i know that if I do not eat 85% of my cals before I get home I make bad choices because I am so hungry.  the reality of arriving home havign only netted 100 calories that day I do not think is a good diet plan.  I try to keep my last 2 meals very low on carbs (to almost none).  Usually these meals are around 6-7 and 9-10 pm.  And are usually under 200 calories a piece.  That is my strategy. Also know that doign too much cardio, expecially combined with low cal intake durign the day can actually inhibit your weight lose.  I typically eat 800 cals before noon and are carb heavy.  Then as the day progresses my meals get smaller and lighter on the carbs.

thanks.

I am noticing my old bad habbits this week especially.  During finals my "reward" for putting in 14-16 hr days 6-7 days a week was mochas, pastries and chocolate (in all forms).  It is hard to stick to chicken and veggies when you are tired and worn out.  But I really do like my new body better than chocolate.  So I am staying strong this time around.

Oh and last week I did not get a fellowship that i applied to and was really bummed/pissed.  Normally I would make some cookies and/or have a glass or two of wine to forget the whole buisness and i really wanted to do this last week.  But I did not, instead I ate my normal Friday "cheat" salad (that has candied nuts on it) and had water with lemon.  I did not surcomb to the nighttime binge to make me feel better but it was a struggle.

I really like your tat BTW, nice and feminine.  I am shooting for fall 08 but I said that last summer I would get it too (07) but I still haven't meet my goals so i pushed it back.  (hopefully I will not push it back again).

It is good for me too b/c I have a habit of rewarding with food and this changes my focus.

The tattoo i want are my husbands initials, stylized to take the shape of wings.  My husband's name is Gabriel like the angel, hence the wings.  I want it on my hip bone/lower stomach.  I also recently starting thinking I want a second one at some point on my back of a madonna lily.

margo -- good job going to the gym despite not feelign like it.  Sometimes it is just so hard, so way to push through.

I love my belly button ring.  I got it when I was 18 and still livign at home.  It caused quite a family tiff at the time.  But the husband loves it.  It healed well but warning it hurt for months when i first got it.  i was surprised how long it hurt actually.  But now it causes no problems and requires no maintence at all.

If I get my physique really toned, I think I will get my tattoo finally.  I am shooting for this fall.  I designed the tattoo I want years ago and have been using it as a carrot.  It will be my reward for working so hard on my body but I will not get it until my body looks a certain way.  So I totally understand the idea of using a peircing the same way.  Maybe when can both get "our rewards" next fall, if we are really good this summer.
