| Weight Loss | Are Some People's Metabolisms Just Too Slow To Let Them Lose Weight Healthily | Aug 31 2009 17:35 (UTC) |
2 |
I am sorry you are having such a difficult time, it would seem with all your efforts it should be easier. I just ran your numbers through the calculator and I get a Basal Metobolic Rate (BMR) for you of 2174 calories per day. If you are eating below this you may really be slowing your metabolism down. I would say you are close to Very Active but I used Moderately active and calculated your maintenance calories at 3370. If you are eating only 2000 calories per day you have a deficit of over 1000 calories per day and you appear to be eating below your BMR, both of these factors could contribute to slowing down any weight loss. In order to lose one pound per week you could try eating 2900 calories per day. This is simply your maintenance calories of 3370-500=2870. This formula worked for me and so far I am down over 30 pounds and working on just getting more strength through weight training. I hope this helps, and don't give up because you are certainly healthier and more fit from all the exercise you have added to your life. Good luck! Edit - Changed to assume male and not female based on the name, age and height. If I have this wrong please let me know and I will re-do. |

I just wanted to chime in here because I have exactly this situation only smaller... My daughter has always been very small and doesn't eat very much. Her pediatrician once told me any calorie is a good calorie. She be will turn 12 this month and just made 70 pounds on the scale. She plays hockey and decided to try out for a new team this year which would have her playing with girls and sometimes boys who are 14 years old (and really big). Well, she made the team and then stated she wanted to play this team and her old team. After much debate we agreed, but then she went through a growth spurt where she got taller but not any heavier. She looked like a stick figure, all muscle and no body fat. Off to the doctor we went and he sent us to a nutritionist. The deal is she can't play both teams if she loses weight so we have put the plan in her hands and she can choose to do this or not, I don't want food issues. Here is the food plan from the nutritionist: Breakfast - Two eggs, english muffin, fruit, 1 cup vanilla soy milk Snack 1 - 1 ounce walnuts or other nuts, capri sun or juice box Lunch - 6 ounces protein, one cup starch, two serving fruit or vegetables Snack 2 - two snacks like cheez-its or crackers, 1 cup vanilla soy milk Supper - 6 ounces protein, 1 cup starch, two serving fruit or vegetables, 1 cup vanilla soy milk Snack 3 - Something sweet, cookies, cake, ring dings Protein Drink or Ensure after every practice and game. She has done a great job sticking to this plan and according to the nutritionist (we don't weigh her at all) she has gained plenty of muscle eating this way through the summer. We hope it will continue through the season which goes from 8/17/09 - 5/15/10. Sorry this is so long, I hope it helps you get some ideas for your daughter. |

I have been telling everyone who will listen that I can now do a chin-up unassisted. I never thought I would be able to do that. The weight training I have done using the NROLFW has really helped me change my body and my expectations for myself. This was fun to brag about one more time. |

Alexandra, At the top of the fitness forum there is a read this first post by Melkor. It will give you some great ideas. I have been doing the New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROLFW) and I love that one because it was good for me as a beginner. I had never worked with weights before but I love it and have seen many positive changes in my body composition. |

Low blood sugar can trigger the symptoms of a panic attack. It happens to me when I don't eat, I can get a racing heart, dry mouth, anxiety, and even a bit of paranoia. If I don't eat and then do something strenuous, it can be a disaster and only getting some carbs will help. I don't know if this is the same thing that is happening to you but it is something to check as it can happen even when I am not exercising but just need some carbs. Now that I know this I haven't had a panic episode in over 6 months. Be sure you are eating enough everyday and be sure your are including enough carbs for your body. |

lagralet, I am hoping you check back on this thread. I ran your numbers as well and your BMR is 1680. You should try to not eat below this number. You didn't list your activities in your email but at Lightly Active, which most of us are at least, you could eat 1800 calories a day and see a loss of 1 pound a week. One of the dangers of eating 1200 calories which is below your BMR is that you will lose weight quickly but it will come back just as quickly. The idea is to lose as slowly as possible with a reasonable calorie deficit and some exercise so that the loss is permanent. As you have seen with Atkins when you eat low calorie or extremely low carb and then begin to eat normally the weight can come right back. Good luck to you too! I hope this helps you on your journey to get healthy. |

rchmndgrly, I ran your number through the calculator I use. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is 1842. Eating below this number of calories will slow our weight loss and eventually make you very tired. This number will be a little different than what CC says because they use a different calculator, but this one really worked for me. With the amount of activity that you are doing I would say you qualify as Moderately Active. To lose 1 pound a week you could eat 2350 calories per day. Keep up the good work on getting healthy! The exercise is great even without the weight loss. I know it's hard but you can do this. Also, to keep motivated when the scale is not moving take your measurements as well as weight. With exercise you will sometimes have weeks where you don't see a weight loss but you see a change in your measurements. Hope all of this helps. |

| Weight Loss | How many shorties are hourglass figures and losing weight? | May 15 2009 11:58 (UTC) |

I am 5'3" and an hourglass. I have lost over 30 pounds since last July. I now weigh 121 and don't have much jiggle except in my bust which has remained larger in comparision to the rest of me, my only complaint. I am currently wearing a 4 US but they are starting to get big now. I have eaten an average deficit of 300 calories a day and walked 3 days a week since July 2008. In January I started the New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROLFW) and can't believe the difference. I have definiton all over my body, including some in my abs which I never thought I would see. I lift heavy for me, which means deadlifts of 100 pounds, and squats and step-ups with 120 pounds (almost to body weight). After only five months I am totally hooked on weight lifting. I have added extra aerobics in the last two weeks just because I am getting close to my goal weight and body fat percentage and don't want to eat less. I eat an average of 1650 calories a day. Good luck to everyone, I hope this information is helpful. |

I never would have guessed you were over 30 from your picture! Anway, I promised I would re-run with the correct age so here it is, your BMR is 1668 so 1700 would put you over your BMR, but still pretty close to it. At Moderately active your maintenance is 2580 so you could eat 2080 to lose 1 pound a week. I hope this helps. |

| Weight Loss | Need a bit of advice. :o | Apr 21 2009 12:29 (UTC) |

Wow, I ran you through the calculator and your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is 2935 calories per day. This is what you need just to survive. To maintain your current weight you need 4540 calories and to lose about one pound a week you need 4100. I put you in at moderately active because you said you were not doing any extra exercise outside of the heavy construction work. You are a big guy! You should not eat below your BMR as this may slow weight loss. At your size you could have a deficit 1000 a day but you have been having deficits much higher and that also can slow weight loss. You could eat 3500 a day for a 1000 calorie deficit or 4100 for a 500 a day deficit, but you should not ever go below 2935 a day. Also, eat lots of lean protein (chicken breast, fish, turkey) you are going to want to maintain as much muscle as possible while losing the extra pounds and that may help. None of my business, but my husband is 6'2" and he weighs 195 and looks very thin. Are you sure you should have a goal of 200 at 3 inches taller? You will probably look even thinner than he does. |

| Weight Loss | hit a plateau, need help pleasee!!! | Apr 21 2009 11:56 (UTC) |

You don't say how tall you are but I am guessing you are close to my height 5'3" as my Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is 1273. I know you are scared to up your calories but you can't say you have tried everything, because you haven't tried upping your calories. I eat 1600-1700 a day and I am losing about 1 pound every other week, mainly fat (which is my goal) because I am doing heavy weight training and a little cardio. I am at 123 now but started at 155. When you eat 1200 you are eating below your BMR and that can slow your weight loss. I found that by never going below my BMR, I never hit a plateau that lasted longer than three weeks while losing the weight. I think you may want to try eating a little more and see what happens. I hope this helps. |

| Weight Loss | To go up or down? | Apr 21 2009 11:41 (UTC) |

I ran you through the calculator and put you at moderately active, although at five days a week you may be very active. Anyway, without knowing your exact age but from the picture I guessed you were around 25, your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is 1700 calories. This rate is what your body needs just to survive. At 1600 calories you are eating below your BMR. This can cause your body to slow down the weight loss. To give you an example, I am 5'3", moderately active, and I am losing weight on 1600-1700 calories a day. This gives me a deficit of about 300 calories a day. I calculate you need 2600 calories to maintain your current weight and that you could lose about a pound a week on 2100 calories. You could eat less than 2100 for a higher deficit or just use your exercise to have a higher deficit but try not to go below the 1700 calories number per day. Congratulations on your weight loss so far, if I am reading this right you have passed the century mark! I have lost 30 pounds using this method and am just working to lose the last few pounds of fat so it has worked for me. I hope it helps you. If I have your age really wrong let me know and I will recalculate with the correct age. I used a calculator meant for people over 21. |

I think you have been undereating by quite a bit. Your BMR is 1526. You should never eat below this many calories or you will lose you energy and slow your metabolism. Your maintenance calories are 1831 at sedentary but you should only have a 500 calorie deficit if it doesn't put you below you BMR. Most of us are not sedentary in the truest sense. At lightly active, which you probably would be if you had your energy back your maintenance would be 2098. At either one you should be eating about 1550 to lose weight. You may want to try eating maintenance of 1831 if really sedentary or 2098 if lightly active for a week, and then try eating at the 1550 level to see what happens. I wouldn't rule out allergies but you may want to try eating more to see what happens. Hope this helps and good luck.

We have a tradition where Easter candy and Halloween candy are bagged up and taken to the homeless shelter. My kids get way to much due to neighbors, grandma, and friends. We share this with other who probably didn't get anything for Easter. You'll feel better because you didn't eat more than you need and because you shared with others. |

Using the BMR calculator and setting you to Lightly active I get that your BMR is 1442 and that to have a deficit of 500 calories a day you should eat 1500 calories per day. Don't go below the 1442 as this will slow your metabolism. 1700 is not bad because your maintenance calories are 1980 for you current height and weight. So you will lose weight on 1700 just a little slower than you may want. Hope this helps! |

Hey nsamiee, sorry you are feeling discouraged! I think you are eating too little. Using the calculator I come up with a Basal Metobolic Rate (BMR) of 1941. You have been eating below that which ends up slowing your metabolism down considerably. I have calculated using an activity level of moderate because you are doing a great job of exercising and I come up with eating about 2500 calories a day to lose a pound a week. Your maintenance calories are 3000. And you will eventually lose weight eating 1600 but it will be at the expense of nutrition and health because your body will go after your muscle and fat as it struggles to keep everything functioning. Just to give you a frame of reference, I am 5'3" and weigh 125. I eat 1700 calories a day and I am losing weight, although slowly. You are eating 100 less than I am and you are 7 inches taller! I hope this helps, good luck to you! |

I know it stinks to not have heath insurance but go see the doctor, you know that as a nurse you should. As to the baby and weight, I had a terrible time with both pregnancies with the baby growing. It's called intrauterine growth retardation. I would gain the pound a week but the baby would gain nothing. I was burning way more calories than I could eat. So I had to go to eating small frequent meals which were very high in calories, think avocados and steak. I actually have the note the doctor wrote telling me to eat an egg, Ensure, ice cream sundae, candy bar, and a small bag of potato chips in additon to all the meals everyday. I also was restricted to no exercise. If you are not eating or gaining you can't burn any calories that should be going to the baby. It worked my first baby had been on track to weigh three pounds at birth when we discovered the problem. She was born at exactly five pounds and perfectly healthy but the skinniest baby you ever saw. When I got pregnant the second time I went on this diet as soon as I knew, I gained over 45 pounds and she weighed exactly seven! I am not a doctor and this was only my experience. You need to see your doctor to find out the right solution for you. But I can tell you that by not feeding yourself you are not feeding your baby. I hope it all works out for you and I am sorry it's so hard for you. |

There are actually exercise routines for free on this site. Click on the Exercise tab at the top and you will find information on how and when to exercise and then also an exercise program. There is a thread somewhere that has people who are working their way through this program. Check out the Fitness Forum on this site as well, especially the stickied notes at the top by Melkor to find that you don't need a gym or weights to get an effective workout. Most of all find something you like to do like run or walk or jump rope because if you like it you will stick with it. At 17 you should definately have fun while you are getting healthy. Good Luck! |

Using the calculator your BMR is 1814 calories if you eat 1600 you are below your BMR and it's not a good place to be. Using Moderate as your activity level (which is awesome by the way, I don't exercise that much at all) you should be able to eat between 2200 and 2400 calories a day and expect to lose a pound week. edit - I have sent you a chart with all the activity levels calculated in your email because it won't post into here are a table. |

I hope this is a typo but at 40kg you are 88 pounds? 88 pounds seems really small for someone 5'2". You probably want to trust your trainer as that is what you are paying them for. You may see a weight gain but as long as you are eating right and lifting weights it should be muscle. Good Luck! |

Actually, 1/2 cup dry is 150 calories, 1 cup dry is 300 calories, but 1 cup dry makes 2 cups of prepared oatmeal, and even I can't eat that much oatmeal. I make a smoothy every morning with oats, pumpkin, cocoa, ground flax seed, and either strawberries or bananas. I love oatmeal and never get tired or it. Edited to correct spelling ;-) |

1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 Cup skim milk, 1 tablespoon light cream cheese, 1 Cup grated cheese of your choice. Heat butter and flour to make a paste. Slowly add milk to make a white sauce, it will begin to thicken and at that point you add the cream cheese and the cheese. It will be very thick and smooth if you whisk it while the cheese and cream cheese melts. Once the cheese has melted the sauce is done. This sauce made with parmesan cheese has 88 calories per 1/4 cup serving and a 1/4 cup goes a long way. I make this with Asiago cheese, 1 teaspoon garlic, and 1 teaspoon white pepper, my kids like this better than any restaurant alfredo sauce. With chedder cheese it becomes a great mac and cheese replacement. |

I agree it is probably caused by the ice, but is it a bruise colored ring with a clear center around the blemish , like a bull's eye, or is it all one circle of bruise color? Just asking because a bull's eye ring around any site on the body is an early warning of Lyme Disease and should be checked by a doctor. It would be really weird if it appeared at the same time you used ice on a blemish but I thought I would ask, just in case. |

I don't usually chime in on these posts but I saw a couple of warning signs that should send you right back to your doctor. Anyone who is slightly obese and begins to experience frequent urination and frequest thirst needs to tell this to their doctor. These are classic first symptoms of diabetes. We have two diabetics in my household and for both these were the first signs that something was wrong. Please make sure you talk to your doctor about this. I hope this is not the case but better safe than sorry on this issue. Also, good job on trying to get heathier! |
