| Weight Gain | Please help! Need weight gain advice | Sep 15 2008 12:59 (UTC) |

My best friend is a vegetarian trying to put on weight as well. Here's the advice I gave her: Eat a lot of nuts. Or peanut butter. It's got protein and a lot of calories. And you can put peanut butter on a lot of things. Celery, carrots, apples, bread. Also, any sort of cheesy thing is bound to be calorie heavy. And then there are the vegetables that are really high in calories, like avocados. Pasta is convenient, not horribly expensive, and you can put cheeses or olive oil on it. Hope that helps. Hopefully there are more people out there with even better tips.

| Motivation | Is it possible? | Sep 02 2008 13:26 (UTC) |

Anything is possible, but that is //highly// unlikely. You'd have to eat a total of nearly 50,000 calories OVER your maintainence. That's like 15,000 calories a day. Now maybe you have an appetite like Michael Phelps, but if not, I really don't believe you gained 14 pounds. It might be water weight. Or maybe some really dense food. Try drinking more water. |

| The Lounge | How to tell if a guy just wants "the goods" from you? | Sep 01 2008 20:08 (UTC) |

Hey. I just turned 18 and started college in NYC last week, so I know what you mean. I already had a boyfriend when I got here, though, so I don't have to worry about making those judgements. Not at this point, anyway. But here's what you should look out for. Any guy who asks to come to your room or asks you to come to his room very soon in your acquaintanceship is definitely looking for "the goods". If he seems "touchy feely", that's a good indication. I know it's nice to get hit on. But what you want is a guy who wants to be your friend AND your boyfriend. So look for someone who will start off as friends with you. :) Guys who hit on you right away and don't start as your friend are more likely to just be looking for a hook up, not a relationship. |

| The Lounge | The Name "YANK"!! | Aug 22 2008 15:08 (UTC) |

I'm sure it could be insulting, if the intent behind its use was malicious. But, the only people who've ever called me that have been my friends from the UK and Ireland, and even my boyfriend (who is also from the UK). So, I've never found it insulting in the least. And I can't know for sure if I would be insulted if it came from a stranger who meant it meanly, because honestly there're much worse things to be called. One of my friends from Ireland always calls me a silly Yank whenever we disagree on pronunciation or chips vs. fries, crisps vs. chips, etc. xD |

| Weight Loss | What's the best thing to do when you hit a plateau? | Aug 20 2008 14:59 (UTC) |

Get mono.
I'm recommend that you add in more strength training to your current workout plan and eat some more protein, too. That usually seems to work for me. And try weighing your food with a scale, in grams, if you don't already. You'd be surprised how many extra calories you could be eating by guessing portions. |

My advice would be to definitely try to add more protein. See, you need to have protein to help keep from losing muscle mass. If you lose weight in muscle, that's not going to help your shape. Try adding some milk and some lean protein like chicken or tuna. :) Besides that, your body has to work harder to break down proteins than it does to break down carbs, so you'll burn a few extra calories just digesting. (Not a lot, mind you. But it is a perk. ;P) |

Oh man, I hear you. I've been stuck in the 180s since May, down from about 215. And then. This morning! 179.4! It seems a bit too sudden a loss, so I'm not going to log it right now. But if it's still the same or similar tomorrow, I'll log it. And I'll take great pleasure in it. :D |

| Weight Loss | Silly Question | Aug 19 2008 04:36 (UTC) |

The manner in which something is cooked won't actually change the amount of calories in the item itself. But for example... with eggs. Scrambled eggs have like 100 calories a serving on this site and boiled eggs have something like 80. That's because they assume that you cook the scrambled eggs with butter. Just log each item separately, and log your meat as raw like alysha said. :) |

Haha. How about this. When you're actually glad for your period because it means that stall/gain was just PMS bloating. I've always been pretty inconsistent when it comes to menstrual cycles (stupid PCOS). I can't tell when they're coming until a day or two before. But lately I get so excited because it means I've just been retaining water. :D |

| The Lounge | Halloween Costumes! | Aug 12 2008 15:20 (UTC) |

The last couple of years, my friends had a Halloween party the Friday before Halloween. The only costume I remember wearing, actually, we a semi-sexy Little Bo Peep thing. I have a white eyelet shirt, a hugely puffy, tutu-esque white skirt, a huge candy cane for a staff, and wore a blue and white brassiere thing over the shirt. It was kind of cute. The worst costume was... this girl came with a ridiculous looking long black wig, black mini-dress, fishnets, highheeled knee high boots. I don't know what she was supposed to be. I'll assume hooker, though. Let's see. I think you should take some famous figure, maybe from a recent film, and put a quirky or funny twist on it. Or maybe just something clever. My sister was thinking about going dressed up as a 1950s Leave it to Beaver type mom. And then claim to be "your mom". I don't know. But have fun with it! |

I think the point is that if being underweight is what makes a girl happy, then her priorities and vision of beauty are seriously skewed. By who? Other women. And the way women are portrayed on TV, in magazines, in movies. If you think women in magazines are real, you are seriously misinformed. Do you have any idea how much airbrushing and post work it takes to get those photos to be "perfect"? They have to remove any touches of unwanted rolls or cellulite. They make the models so shiny, it's ridiculous. And then they sell their magazines and say, "This is the ideal woman". Not even some models look like that! Come on. To say girls aren't brainwashed... that's sort of stupid. They are. The idea of what is beautiful is always influenced by artistic mediums of the age. Back in the days of the Renaissance, fat was in, and that's how women were painted. Take for instance Botticelli. Even later, look at Renoir's work. Also, girls think that being super thin is the way to get a man? Let me just show you something. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-53036 1/Blue-eyes-blonde--good-bed-What-men-REALLY- look-ideal-woman.html I guess that's all I have to say about that. :P |

What you should do is find some time (maybe between violin and homework) to go for a quick job or bike ride. Even if you can't dedicate the recommended hour every day, at least get in as much as you can. It's better than nothing. :) |

I had really thick hair as a kid. All the way up until I was 15 (3 years ago), it was so thick I went through like 2 packages of hair bands a month. They'd all snap because they couldn't hold it all! Then, I started shedding a little more. It was still really thick, but slightly less so. And then when I started dieting last year, I started losing a lot of hair. But. I talked to my doctor and she said that women generally lose 100-150 strands of hair a day, but that it can be more during times of physical emotional stress. Your body is physically stressed right now because it's not used to operating on fewer calories. You'll still shed after your body gets used to it, but probably a little less. And don't worry, you're not going bald. xD |

| The Lounge | hot weather make ya feel bigger? | Aug 07 2008 02:23 (UTC) |

Well, probably what that is is the fact that gases contract when they're colder and expand when they're warmer. So the different gaseous substances in your body make you feel a little puffier. I've noticed that my rings are looser on my fingers in winter and fall. I don't think you just feel bigger in hot weather, you may actually be bigger. That's not to say you weigh more, though.
(Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about, really. xD) |

When I was younger, I wanted to be so many things. I wanted to be an ADA like my cousin or Jack McCoy from Law and Order. I wanted to be an actress or a singer. I wanted to work on Broadway. I wanted to be a writer, a teacher. Now. I'm majoring in Russian, German, and Portuguese language. Ideally, I'll use that to work as a diplomat or ambassador of some sort, but realistically, I'll probably work for some international company. |

| Young Calorie Counters | In school forever. Can anyone relate? | Aug 05 2008 17:19 (UTC) |

I know what you mean, too. I'm only just starting college in the fall. But after that, I plan to go for at least a Master's degree in my language majors. And I'm thinking about going to law school. I have a really serious boyfriend. And he's not planning on going to school after college. He doesn't need to. He's majoring in programming and web design, so no need to study it more. But I feel like I'll never be finished studying. It kind of scares me that I'll be in school for a good 7-11 years yet. |

The "all smart people are physically unhealthy" stereotype is so wrong. What a generalisation. And being intelligent and being busy studying doesn't mean there's no time for working out. Now, I'm not in the best shape ever. But I have good cholesterol, not at high risk for any diseases, good blood pressure. I did well in highschool, and in 3 weeks, I'll be moving into my dorm room at Columbia University. (That's an Ivy League college, in case you didn't know). And I go to the gym and work out for an hour or more a day. It's more than do-able. It just takes resolve. |

Hey there. I'm 5'6". I don't know exactly what my weight goal is. I've not been thin since I was 11, so I don't know what weight will look good on me. I'm currently aiming for 145-150. I may go as low as 125-130, though. :) |

I go to college in New York, and I am psyched that they passed this law. Not only will it take the "guesstimation" out of Starbucks runs and such, but it may also encourage restaurant chains to add even more healthy options. And the shock that all these people got? That's good for them. Better to be aware than to wake up one day, surprised that they've gained 20 pounds. |
