Haha, well, I have recently reached my goal weight over the course of the semester in a healthy way; living in the city, I get to walk EVERYwhere, and my college gives me free access to a toprate gym. However, believing in giving my body what it needs and not what I think it does, I've definitely found that I've had to up my calorie intake from my normal during weeks like these past ones where my workload is so great that I lose entire nights of sleep at a time. I was talking to a fellow art student, and we came to the funny conclusion that we prepare for all-nighters the same way football players and runners do for games and marathons... However, I definitely don't exercise during these weeks because my body is definitely going through all it can right now. I'm waiting till I'm recuperated enough to start up again.

I would vote for Obama... However, I'm seriously opposed to the system of the Electoral College that the USA employs. We're the only country in the world to ever do it, and I believe it completely annulls the purpose of a peoples' vote. It's sort of like giving us the illusion that our opinion matters. I'll vote when the electoral college goes away, because until then, it doesn't mean a damn thing. |

I like the way some guys' torsos curve down into flat abdominals, with those little muscles right above the hips that only ripped guys get... I also like that guys can have big sloping backs with big sloping shoulders. It's something only men have and I admire it a lot, especially as an artist. |

| The Lounge | Thoughts on Hookah? | Aug 05 2008 04:54 (UTC) |

It's a myth that hookah smoking is safer than smoking cigarettes. The tobacco is no less toxic. Hookah smokers actually inhale more tobacco smoke than do cigarette smokers because of the massive volume of smoke they inhale. Hookah — also called narghile, shisha and goza — is a water pipe. The device has been used for centuries in the Middle East and Asia to smoke tobacco. When a smoker inhales through the tube, a pressure difference forces air past the heating source and heats the tobacco, which gives off smoke. The smoke is pulled away from the tobacco and passes through the water and into the smoke chamber — from which it is inhaled by the smoker. Although many believe that the water in the hookah filters out all the "bad stuff" in the tobacco smoke, this isn't true. According to a World Health Organization advisory, a typical one-hour session of hookah smoking exposes the user to 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette. Even after passing through water, tobacco smoke still contains high levels of toxic compounds, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). Hookah smoking also delivers significant levels of nicotine — the addictive substance in tobacco. The trend of hookah smoking has doctors and public health experts concerned because — despite claims to the contrary by many users — smoking from a hookah is just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes.

| Weight Loss | Strange calculations? | Aug 05 2008 04:43 (UTC) |

I agree - the minimum calorie intake for healthy survival is 1200 for an adult woman. I'm 5'0.5" tall, and my minimum calorie intake is 1300. You're quite tall, and hardly need to lose weight; eating so little can't be healthy. Check up on your BMI. There are plenty of ways to get in your recommended calorie intake without feeling too full-- For instance, nuts are extremely healthy and rich in calories, without being too much to eat. Hard-boiled eggs are also great. Try focusing less on thin, and more on happy. You probably look great. Learn to love yourself. |

When I grow up, I'm going to be one of those eccentric ladies with crazy hair, feather earrings, and four cats (give or take). I'm working on it. Considering that I'm going to art school, all seems according to plan. |

| Weight Loss | Eating late | Aug 04 2008 04:50 (UTC) |
16 |
CC says that you should be taking in your meals as you burn calories throughout the day-- For example, my daily burn rate at Sedentary is about 1650, while my eat meter goal is 1300. Theoretically, I should meet my calorie limit of 1300 at the time when my burn meter also meets 1300, leaving the rest of the day to burn the difference. The thing is, while I do have a normal sleep schedule, it's not a daytime one. I do sleep about 9 hours every night and wake up at about noon. This means that my last meal is taken anywhere from 9:00 to midnight, because that's my schedule. I always try to leave my last few hours specifically for digesting, and this is often when I fit in my exercise. So while I am eating late at night, I am leaving time for my body to process this food. It all depends on your schedule. If you go to bed at 11, I don't see why you shouldn't move your dinner from 7:30 to 9, or even 9:30-- this way you'll stave off some of the urge to attack the snackeroonies. Or, separate your dinner into two smaller meals-- one at normal time, and one later, to keep you satisfied. I guess the theory behind not wanting to eat late at night is because sleep slows down the process of burning calories. ALTERNATELY, it has also been proven that your metabolism speeds up a little bit after eating, so it may give you problems falling asleep. I know they kind of contradict each other, but... take your pick. If all else fails, save room in your calorie allowance for a little something-something later on in the evening. These are guidelines, not laws! The most important part is to be happy. |

| Foods | What is your favorite cereal? | Aug 04 2008 04:36 (UTC) |

Honey Nut Cheerios is an all-time favorite of mine-- I especially like that it's heart-healthy, given my family's long and persistent history of heart disease. Special K Vanilla and Almond, which I've been munching on all day, is simply too yummy. I haven't gotten a good chance to eat nuts since I started counting calories, and this gives me all the taste without the unnecessary gain. Lots of vitamins, too. I had some kind of Kashi once and it was delicious... I just haven't gotten around to getting more for some reason. Wierd. |

| Weight Loss | Starvation mode leading to anorexia | Aug 03 2008 05:24 (UTC) |
5 |
The thing with many afflicted with anorexia is that they take it to the point where the body is living off its fat and muscle reserves as a last hope for survival. Basically, their body is on its last limb before it starves. The body can't live off itself for forever-- if its metabolism isn't sustained, it's not going to sustain itself. Does that sound healthy to him? |

Well, you've already got the tea, so might as well use it. If you're still a little skeptical about its... "regulating" properties, consider that oolong tea is proven to help lose weight in a healthy way, and also has that same tendency. Prunes, also a good snack, apparently share the trait of "system flushing". Guess you'll have to wait and see what happens! |

| Health & Support | Hair loss | Jul 30 2008 19:18 (UTC) |

I actually noticed this awhile ago with myself; I could lose upwards of 20 strands in one showering session. It's been going on awhile now and I haven't noticed any signs of thinning or brittleness otherwise; I think before, I had simply not noticed. Having asked around and done a bit of research into it, it's pretty normal to have those strands fall out; it's just hair replenishing itself. You've got thousands of spares left and new ones are still growing in; I wouldn't worry about it. If the problem continues to nibble at the edges of your mind, you could try refraining from putting your hair into tight ponytails or buns if you do that, or stop blowdrying and/or straightening your hair. Pulling your hair back can cause tension on strands and sometimes pull them out (I know I'm fond of wearing mine up), and heat can definitely damage your hair over time. |

| Motivation | Love to Hate Weekends!!!!!! | Jul 21 2008 20:57 (UTC) |

It's important that you're seeing a pattern at this point, and good that you're at least taking note of what's happening week after week. You're right-- you don't have to stop living your life, stay home, and do nothing but count calories... That would just nix the whole point of a healthy goal in the first place! However, there are ways to help you prevent that Sunday-night regret... Try keeping a notepad with you. When you get a free moment (just a minute or so, it can be during a bathroom break, or even quickly before or after sitting down for a meal) try writing down freehand what you can remember eating that day. This will help you be conscientious about your calorie plan even during weekends, without being obsessive or time-consuming. On a trip to the amusement park, try bringing your own healthier lunch, snacks and water bottles-- this should help curb your appetite and keep temptation at bay from those Dippin' Dots (and also save you from some hideous amusement park food prices!). Bagged meals will also work for days at the beach, car trips, and so many other places.... I even bring some munchies and water to the movie theater (hidden within an oversized purse, of course) when I go, so I'm not paying an arm and a leg for some cholesterol-packed, overpriced nachos. Hope this helps-- Good luck with your goals! |
