I burn tons of calories doing circuit training. Squats, deadlifts, chest press, lunges, overhead press, with little rest. Get a heart rate monitor that counts calories and you'll see your heart rate go thru the roof. I actually can't do this for more then 30 minutes. I do some of the videos at bodyrock.tv or I just do a full body program. The trick is to keep your heart rate up, you'll get stronger and work your heart at the same time. |

| Weight Loss | Emergen-C drink supplement | Nov 04 2009 19:24 (UTC) |

I agree. There is nothing wrong with these mixes or drinks such as Emergen C or 5 hour energy. They are vitamin supplements. I just think they are overpriced for what they are. I buy a huge bottle of Vitamin C with 250 tablets for just $6, and B is even cheaper. You can't overdo water soluble vitamins like C or B, you just pee out what you don't use. I take 4 grams of Vitamin C a day, the equivalent of 4 packs of Emergen C. I'm still just under the amount I need in my blood according to the last vitamin panel I took. |

I wasn't able to gain any muscle when I lost weight. Just lost fat. It doesn't mean you shouldn't try though, at the very least you want to keep what you have. |

| The Lounge | The Problem With Capitalism Is That You Eventually Run Out Of Other People's Money... | Nov 03 2009 20:48 (UTC) |
7 |
I believe strongly in capitalism, resources are used in an efficient manner unlike in Socialism. Pure capitalism probably exists more in China then it does in the US. Look at roads for example, why are you allowed to drive on that highway for free when you have to pay to get on a subway which costs about the same amount to maintain? In China many highways are private and you must pay a toll to use it. Let's see how fast that gets people to stop driving. The credit crisis was caused by our government. We need usury laws in this country. Why do you pay 20-30% interest to the bank on your credit cards when they can borrow for free? We use to believe that you couldn't make more then 10% interest on borrowed money. Here's a secret = that 30% of interest you pay annually - they don't ever expect you to repay them, its nearly impossible because your original loan amount doubles every 3 years. They don't take on the risk of your default loan, they just package it off and sell it some fool in the middle east or your local pension fund. This health care debate really saddens me. It's pure fluff to hide the massive amount of money the govt has spent on bailing out banks, probably around 3 trillion dollars. One third of that would buy universal health care, instead of subsidizing the poor decision making of the banks. |

I'm 30 and I love it. Life sucked when I was younger, I worried too much about status, my body size and what other people thought of me. Thank god that part of my life is over. Men still stare at me, I like to think as they age they find women their own age just as attractive. And what kind of freak only dates only 18 year olds? |

| Fitness | Confused on toning vs. bulking | Nov 03 2009 12:53 (UTC) |
8 |
If you eat more you gain weight, that weight could be muscle or fat, most likely it's fat. If you eat a deficit you will lose weight, so if you want to look like women in magazines, don't eat more then you need and lift. Challenge yourself. That doesn't mean you have to lift like a Olympian, but it does mean you need to life heavier then whatever you have been lifting in order to make the muscle grow. You can get toned lifting more repetitions as well. A woman that has never lifted before can gain muscle just by starting any program. It gets harder as you have more experience. Those women that complain that they are getting bulky eat too much and are probably just gaining fat. |

| Weight Loss | Tuna for weight loss? | Nov 03 2009 00:31 (UTC) |
1 |
A lot of people have heavy metal poisoning, possibly half the population. Mercury is a huge problem because it stays in your blood for a really long time causing all kinds of health problems. Mercury has a half life of 6 months I believe, so every 6 months you will decrease the amount in your body by 50%. Canned tuna is a big source of mercury poisoning. At the very least eat real tuna, not canned. In general everything in a can is processed (salt is used to preserve the item to extend shelf life), so a better choice would be frozen. |

I was thinking about buying one of these, but because it's on your upper arm, you won't be able to actually read it unless you take it off, so you'll need to buy a display watch also. Blew my budget after that, so I decided to skip it. |

| Weight Loss | eating in india | Nov 02 2009 13:16 (UTC) |
3 |
I'm headed back to India this week as well. I was there two years ago, and I lost a few pounds there. A combination of just not knowing what to eat, and lots of walking. I'm Chinese American, and like Indian food, but can't eat it everyday. Since most food there is vegetarian that helps a lot. Ask for less ghee. Don't eat a fried breakfast, avoid soda, and I'm not really sure how you would gain weight. Last time I went I ate a lot of bread, spinach and chickpeas. I also got really sick when I came home, parasites take a few days to take hold, so I'm doubling up on the probiotics this time around. For the next few days I'm going to eat whatever I want before I leave. |

Maybe you aren't feeling so great about your own body so you have no sex drive. I know when I gain a few pounds and I get depressed about my weight my sex drive completely goes away. I'm obviously not saying to lose weight, but maybe to work on how you feel about your own body. If you aren't sleeping with your husband at all, I'm sure he feels like you don't want him either. |

| Weight Loss | Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet: Plant Protein vs. Animal Protein? | Oct 31 2009 03:32 (UTC) |
1 |
The RDA requirements for protein intake is 50 grams a day. That's the same people that invented that really screwy food pyramid that we use, that's heavily influenced by agricultural business. I'm really not sure why people think the China study is false. I have heard many cardiologist say the exact same thing, Dr Dean Ornish has been saying eat a vegan diet for years. 20 years ago China didn't have any heart disease, cancer or diabetes because they ate a plant based diet and rode their bicycles everywhere. These are all lifestyle illnesses. Please spend some time watching this excellent video by Mark Bittman, the food writer. He says we need at most half a pound of a meat a week, and we don't need animal products at all. Sadly many eat that in a day. http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/mark_bittma n_on_what_s_wrong_with_what_we_eat.html |

| Maintaining | Fats, proteins, carbs, oh my! | Oct 30 2009 20:35 (UTC) |
2 |
I can't believe how much time is spent discussing what the right portion of fat, carbs and protein should be. If I made you some type of chemical concoction with 30% fat, 30% protein and 40% carbs would you eat it? It doesn't matter what the mix of micro nutrients is. Eat food, unprocessed, in its original form, mostly plants. Stay away from the middle aisles of a grocery store. 1400 calories is not enough, listen to your body. |

Even one dress size down makes a HUGE difference, so if you have lost 36lbs you have dropped several dress sizes. Go the mall and try on every cute thing you've ever wanted to wear. If I wear my bigger clothes I just feel big and everything does sort of fit but I hate the way I look in them so why wear it? |

| Fitness | Arc Trainer Burn | Oct 28 2009 03:24 (UTC) |

I use a heart rate monitor at the gym, and I get the same burn on the arc trainer as I do on the elliptical. It also feels exactly the same too. As with everything the burn rate is determined by how hard you push yourself. I burn the most calories when I circuit train and I know this because I'm literally gasping for air and I sound like I'm hyperventilating. |

| The Lounge | So who's not getting vaccinated against swine flu? | Oct 27 2009 04:09 (UTC) |
34 |
I got my flu shot this year, the H1N1 vaccine is very hard to come by in NYC unless you are a health care worker. I get my flu shot every year because I travel a lot this time of year and I really don't want to be sick while I'm abroad. I've never gotten the flu in my whole life. My doctor is really against the H1N1 vaccine, he actually refused to take it, because he doesn't trust the efficacy of it. H1N1 has been around for some time, he doesn't understand why all the sudden its getting all this attention. He thinks its a way for the big drug companies to overbill again. Maybe people aren't buying as much Viagra or prozac and they need to make money some where. |

| Fitness | Do '5 hour energy' and '6 hour energy' bottles work? | Oct 26 2009 22:20 (UTC) |
|
I don't think the 5 hour energy drink has any caffeine in it. It just has a small amount of B complex. If this drink works for you, just take a B complex or a multi-vitamin, its much cheaper. B vitamins are used in energy production so don't take it at night. |

There lots of things I just couldn't make myself commit to. When it's really important that I do it, I challenge myself to do it every single day for 30 days. No excuses, just go for thirty days. After that you can quit, you can stop, you can do it every other day, doesn't matter. Just get through 30 days. The first few days will be the most difficult. You won't want to go, by the end it will become a habit that you will keep for life. |

| Fitness | Yoga what's your take? | Oct 26 2009 18:02 (UTC) |

I love yoga. It makes me stronger, leaner, more flexible and I think its a wonderful form of mediation. The physical practice of yoga helps give your mind a vacation, and the step after that is mediation. Mediation is the pursuit of happiness through mind training. Most people can't sit still by themselves for an extended period of time, so they do the asanas. If you like it, keep doing it. There is always more to improve on. I'm 30 and the last class I went to a 64 yr old women was light years ahead of me with strength and agility. She looked amazing. |

| Weight Loss | Best Diet in the World | Oct 24 2009 02:07 (UTC) |

Off topic but I'm always surprised when I see someone that makes $8 an hour at a grocery store carrying around an I-Phone. People say they are broke all the time, but have loads of money to give Apple. I spend a lot on my food, I buy organic whenever possible, I shop at the Union Square farmers market whenever I can. I don't own a cell phone. I don't have a flat screen TV. Some of my hand bags cost $1. It worries me to see people spend more on their hair then they do on the food they put in their bodies. |

| Vegetarian | My Raw Expirience | Oct 22 2009 23:54 (UTC) |

I dont think I will ever be able to go raw, I try to juice now and then, and eat a raw salad occasional and fruit everyday. But I totally agree that raw vegan is by far the best diet there is. For those of us that can't pull it off take digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes are only found in raw foods, otherwise your pancreas has to create enough to digest everything you eat. It's only meant to supply 50% of the enzymes, you are suppose to get the rest from raw foods. |

| Weight Loss | Can you just browse "A" rated foods? | Oct 22 2009 23:45 (UTC) |
4 |
This is how I think about A rated food. It's a whole food, non processed that didn't come from a bag, can or was shrink wrapped. That means all vegetables, fruits, whole grains. Meat, fish, and diary in moderation. If you cooked it from scratch, and the ingredients came from the previously mentioned items then its A rated. So in other words if it's a frozen dinner, from a fast food restaurant, fried, covered in cheese, coated with sugar or butter it's junk and eat it in moderation or not at all. If the food doesn't rot when left out for a few days, bacteria doesn't even want it, so why should you? It's a sad fact that one third of american calories come from junk food, and the top five most eaten foods include hamburgers and pizza. Skip the soda too. |

| Weight Loss | Any suggestions? | Oct 22 2009 02:57 (UTC) |

I can see the numbers on the scale are driving you nuts. Step away from the scale and learn that happiness is not a number. I'm exactly your weight and height and I feel and look awesome. You can drive yourself insane thinking you need to be thinner, it's a losing battle because once you get there you'll only want to lose 1 more. After losing and gaining those same pounds I'm sure you already know this. |

| Weight Loss | Diet and Amount of Fat | Oct 22 2009 02:52 (UTC) |
1 |
Are you sure you are only eating 15-20grams of fat That means less then 10% of your calories are coming from fat, I'm not even sure if that's possible. I don't eat meat and I get more fat then you. Maybe you mean saturated fat? I think all this obsessing with percentages isn't really helping anymore. Eat whole foods, nothing processed, whole grains, lots of vegetables. Do something active every day and it will be impossible to be fat. |

| Fitness | Skinny but 'fat' | Oct 22 2009 01:48 (UTC) |
16 |
It's better to reorient your goals. If you goal is to be skinny, there's always another pound to lose, better to concentrate on fitness. Make goals like- I want to lift 5-10 more pounds within 4 weeks, or add another set of squats by next week. I'm 5'4 and I'm 120lbs, and if I weighed 99lbs I would probably just look like a bobble head. I think you should gain weight, exercise with a concentration on lifting weights. I find bodyrock.tv to be really helpful. Best of luck. |

I've head a lot of them gain weight before going on the show, so they can lose that weight fast. I have heard of two people getting hurt on the show. I think people will do just about anything to be on TV or win lots of money. I wonder if it's like before and after photos for diet ads, where the person actually was thin, probably a weight lifter of some kind, then gained weight because of injury. |

| Weight Loss | Natural Appetite Suppressants?? | Oct 21 2009 04:42 (UTC) |

Digestive enzymes and psyllium work well for me. I take the psyllium before the meal, and digestive enzymes after the meal. Pysllium is a nature fiber that expands to help you feel full, and fiber helps control glucose so that you don't have those nasty sugar crashes. Digestive enzymes so you don't tax your pancreas, and actually digest your food. |

| Vegetarian | B-12? | Oct 20 2009 23:55 (UTC) |
5 |
People love to pick on vegetarians about B-12, but the fact is most people don't get enough B-12 and would do well taking a supplement. Take a multi everyday, and add a B-100 complex (includes B-12) to much sure you get enough of all those nutrients. Your pee will turn a really bright yellow. You can't overdo B vitamins because they are water soluable, just drink 6-10 glasses of water a day and you will pee out any your body doesn't need. I take a vitamin panel test every year. I take a lot of vitamins and the test still shows that I am deficient in folic acid, so it's really hard even when you eat right and take supplements. Consider also taking 2 grams of vitamin D everyday. I take 2 grams and I'm at the low end of acceptable. I am a vegetarian that does not eat fish, but I do take fish oil supplements for omega 3. The vegan version is just too expensive. |

When we do watch TV we snack like pigs, so thankfully its only about 1 to 2 times a week in front of the tube. The other days we walk the dog, go out to a restaurant and share a small dessert and coffee. I also spend a lot of late nights doing yoga while my husband is on the computer. Sitting in front of the TV only makes me want to eat. Why is that? |
