Weight lifting isn't a high calorie burning activity. It's important to do and helps your body burn more in the long run, but I probably would be hesitatnt to even count that on the calorie counter. If you start with cardio and then go into weights (maybe you are I'm not sure) that would burn more calories than the other way around because now you have your heart rate up for muscle building and you're keeping your metabolism sustained for that much longer. |

gi-jane is right. I am 120lbs. but I am 5'2" plus you are 19 years old so your metabolism is still pretty high. But to answer your question about control, once you realize how many HOURS it will take to burn off high calorie foods, it might become easier to say no, because for me it's easier to say no than to dread hitting the gym. So try that. I was 110 lbs. when I was younger, but that doesn't mean it's healthy for me now (25), I would be a toothpick. |

I eat Kashi GOlean Crunch with some light vanilla soymilk. It's divine and has 8g of fiber and 9g of protein a serving. Keeps me full all morning! |

I agree with cooking4 carnivores. Amy's has a lot of different choices. BUt I too do not eat meat and it takes no time to microwave frozen veggies, keep apples and whatnot around or just heat up a veggie burger. |

Yeah I agrre with karozel too. I try to eat that amount of proetin too, it keeps you full and helps with weight loss. It's not so imbalanced where your body will go into ketosis. You would have to eat an extreme amount of protein and pretty much no carbs. So I don't see the problem with it. |

| Weight Loss | 1200 calories?? | Apr 17 2009 21:22 (UTC) |

I'm very short too, 5'2. And I eat between 1000-1200 a day too because I just don't agree that we need as many calories as people of "normal height" :) when loosing weight. I am not malnurished or starving myself, and I don't have an eating disorder. I just make very focused decisions on what I eat everyday. My nurtitionist and trainer do not feel like there is anything wrong with this plan. Granted, once I hit my goal weight, then I'll consume my 1600 cals. a day to maintain. I also don't swim 3-4 times a week, so there's a difference there. All I'm saying is 1200 calories is the recommended minimum, but 100-200 calories less once in a while does not constitute a "problem" or being malnurished. As long as you feel you are getting enough food. |

Ok I've never tried this product but if folks are spending this kind of money on syrup, I may suggest just sugar free syrup. It's 35 calories per 1/4 cup and I think it tastes like regular syrup. |

I'm sure most of us are not in the right physical fitness to go but we do it anyway, haha! But seriously, your first class will be the hardest but you should try it. It's fun and you can always adjust your resistance to make it as challenging or as difficult as you want. |

Joining a gym is a great way to speed up your weight loss. I would do that rather than spend 40 bucks a month weighing in at WW. I mean, you get support and all, but it doesn't come with a gym. |

Hey guess what?! I'm also 5'2 and 25 years old. I was lucky enough to reach my goal weight of 120 lbs. so perhaps I can give you some tips on what I did. First of all, I think you've got your cals. right. We're not very tall, so yeah we do need to cut back to around 1200 for a weight loss. It was hard for me at first, but I started eating a lot more protein and cut out some of the carbs. I tried to eat equal amouns of both. After a couple weeks, i finally started to see results! I was getting so mad! Maybe your body might be different, but if I eat 1600 cals. then I won't loose weight. I also go to the gym 3-4 times a week doing high intensity cardio like spinning, running, etc. and weightlifting. I think the whole, "not eating enough" is somewhat of a hoax if your talking about the short term. My other thought is: are you weighing and measuring your food? Perhaps you might be eating more calories than you think. It's a good idea to double check that if your not sure. But it did take 2-3 weeks to start seeing the scale move, so maybe it hasn't been long enough. It sounds like you're doing everything right, just give it more time and double check your calories. It shouldn't be as complex as "calorie shifting" and whatnot, just eat when your hungry and make sure it's healthy protein. It keeps you full the longest and your body is much more efficient in burning it. In fact, I was told your body burns protein, carbs, and then fat in that order. Hope this helps! |

Mudslides are pretty bad for you, I would avoid those like the plague. Anything creamy is probably going to be close to 400 cals for one cocktail. Martinis are also really high in calories, lots of sugary additives. If you want the biggest bang for your buck, drink hard liquor with calori-free additives such as club soda, diet soda, or even bloody mary's are a "healthier" option. Beware: tonic water has calories. But a flavored vodka with club soda is refreshing AND easier on the waistline. You could have 4 of those at 100 cals. a piece. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1608/i s_4_20/ai_114819425 Here's a link I found: Just as I thought, almost 500 cals. for one mudslide. |

yeah i think aftonmae is right. I'm 5'2 and if I want to loose weight, I have to eat the BARE minimum. My trainer is 4'11 and this is the same way she needs to eat to loose. It definately sucks because there's not much room for error, but I keep telling myself as soon as I can get to my goal (115) then I can start eating normal again. Becuase I already know how much I can eat to maintain. Gr. Being short stinks sometimes! |

I have a couple of staple items I just won't alter for a less healthier one, even if it's on sale. For instance, I buy the Fage 0% greek yogurt and FF cottage cheese. Yeah they're more expensive, but you just have to decide which items are more inportant to you to have, price and all. But the whole bread conversation, I've been buying the low-cal wheat bread, but I don't know why I couldn't just buy regular cheap WW bread and only eat half, lol. Kinda makes me feel a little bit silly for paying such an insane price :P |

| Fitness | elliptical machine recommendations | Jan 05 2009 16:25 (UTC) |

It depends on how much you plan on using it and if anyone else will be using it as well. I bought a Horizon elliptical for about 800. And I guess that's a middle of the road machine, so I found out later... I think I just got a bad machine because the thing broke about 3 times. In all fairness they did come out and fix it both times without giving me grief. Their customer service is pretty good so I can't say horrible things about them. But the elliptical I bought I really do like it. It has a stacked flywheel which means it's more compact and doesn't take up as much room. And it's VERY quiet. But you have to be ok with the fact that regular maintenance to the machine is necessary. Ellipticals aren't complicated machines so if you at least buy one in the 700 dollar range, it doesn't have that many parts that'll break, in comparison to a treadmill for example. If I could do it over again, I would have bought a more expensive machine. But at the time, I thought I was. There's only two of us that use the machine, and it works well for our purposes. Hmm, my post sounds like I can't make up my mind :P I hope my back and forth opinion helped. |

| Health & Support | Is it okay to take a multivitamin and a vitamin d supplement? | Dec 17 2008 14:53 (UTC) |
6 |
I would skip the double dose. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin so it takes your body a couple of days to use what you've taken in the multi-vitamin. So if I'm not mistaken, your body will rid itself of the excess it doesn't use. Same with water soluble like Vit. C for example. It does no good to take more than your body needs, it will use what it needs and rid itself of the excess. Except for the water soluble, you need 100% everyday, whereas fat soluble, you don't need 100% daily value everyday because your body doesn't utilize it as fast. Maybe in the case for redviolin, it might be different, but this should be true for folks not fighting any ailments. One other thought: if your deficient in D, I know that D and calcium work hand in hand with each other so maybe you need to look into that as well. Good luck, hope this was helpful |

gi-jane is right. 1.6 pounds is roughly 5,100 calories. That's a lot of calories! You just cannot realistically loose weight much faster than you are. Think of it this way. How long did it take you to gain all your weight? Probably longer than 2 weeks. Patience is key. I know it's easier said than done :P |

| Weight Loss | Aiming for under 100g of carbs per day? | Dec 15 2008 21:32 (UTC) |

I eat 100g or less of carbs a day and that's not putting you at risk of ketosis. A no-carb diet would have to be more extreme than that from what I've read.

I definately understand how you feel. The Holidays can make most of us feel pretty bad since there are a lot of temptations. But after all af the parties and Vegas trips, a couple of pounds is not bad at all! I would try to look at it positively. Think of all the stuff you ate and drank over the period of time and 2 pounds is all you have to show for it? That's pretty good if you look at the positive about it. This is just a minor step back, but you can have bigger steps foward! We are human. We are not perfect. Everytime I have a bad day or week, I just keep telling myself that it's just a minor setback and I will just jump back on the train and be ok again. |

It took me about 3 weeks to finally see the scale start moving. It takes a lot of dedication. But the most important thing to remember is, do this because you want to be healthy not just for cosmetic purposes of loosing weight. If you think that way, then you'll eventually start to see results. Also rememebr to weigh and measure everything, at least until you get a real idea of portions. It can be easy for all of us to over or under-estimate.

| Fitness | 105 lbs & still fat! I need help! | Dec 04 2008 17:27 (UTC) |

I diagree with spirochete. Pilates is an excellent way to tone muscle without adding bulk. Anyone who's taken a pilates class knows how challenging it is. You can lift weights, but that targets one muscle group at a time. Pilates targets multiple muscle groups while constantly keeping your core flexed for the entire hour. Sorry but it's much easier to lift a 15 lb dumbell than to do an advanced plank in pilates. I've been doing pilates for awhile now and it's still hard and I am still sore when I'm done. I would highly suggest this a coulpe times a week. But whatever strength training you do whether it be weights or pilates, you will see a noticeable change. Just figure out what's best for you and your body |

| Weight Loss | the age old carb question? | Nov 25 2008 19:39 (UTC) |

I've cut back my carbs and have had pretty good results. I haven't cut them out completely, I just try to have a more equal balance of carbs and protein. Because you body breaks down cals in the order of carbs, fat and then protein. So if you cut back moderately on the carbs, then it'll start burning the fat for energy quicker. And, this is something you can do for the rest of your life. |

| Weight Loss | calories eaten. calories burned, BMR and RMR? | Nov 25 2008 01:58 (UTC) |
|
If you feel satisfied eating 1200 a day, I wouldn't consume 1900 or whatever if you'r enot hungry. If you're not hungry, then I highly doubt you're body is starving. I'm 5'2 and 25 years old. The fact of life is that we are short and smaller than your average person. So that means we just can't eat as much food as other people. I usually eat around 1200-1300 cals a day. I usually do about 2-4 days of exercise. But my exercise is high intensity cardio and weight lifting. The more muscle mass you gain, the more cals. you can eat. But the majority of my weight loss was from cutting cals from 1600 to 1200. That meant I was cutting back on some carbs and eating a LOT more protein to keep myself full. It took about 2 weeks for things to kick in, and after that it just kept coming off. I think I'm now at a plateau because I can't get rid of the last 5 pounds. Could be thepumpkin pie :P I'm not sure.... haha. If you want to get it off faster, you need more vigorous exercise. Brisk walking is great, but getting your heart rate up in the cardio zone burns more calories, and you also will have the afterburn effect of keeping your metabolim up long after your workout. Anyway, I hope this helps. |

| Foods | Meal Replacement Shakes - what's best? | Nov 24 2008 15:53 (UTC) |

Most of these products will have artificial sweetners or refined white sugar. If I'm in a hurry, I'll grab a Slim Fast Low-Carb option. You just have to find a shake that is lower in carbs because the higher ones contain the most sugar. Here's the breakdown for these shakes: Nutrition Facts Serving Size 1 can (340.0 g) Amount Per Serving Calories 190 Calories from Fat 81 % Daily Value* Total Fat 9.0g 14% Saturated Fat 1.5g 7% Polyunsaturated Fat 1.5g Monounsaturated Fat 6.0g Cholesterol 15mg 5% Sodium 260mg 11% Total Carbohydrates 6.0g 2% Dietary Fiber 4.0g 16% Sugars 1.0g Protein 20.0g Vitamin A 35% • Vitamin C 100% Calcium 40% • Iron 15% * Based on a 2000 calorie diet Of course, the tradeoff to lower sugar is higher fat.
I might also suggest Designer Whey protein powder. http://www.designerwhey.com/designer-whey.htm This suppliment has 100 calories and is low in carbs. This is one of the few I have found that's lower in carbs. You can get this online or at GNC, if you have that in Canada. Hope this helps! |

Sometimes I'll put a 2% or fat free kraf single over my broccoli or whatever. It's pretty low-cal and gives you some more protein. Also, a little grated parmesan goes a long way. |
