| Weight Loss | STILL struggling - I hate what I've become | Sep 14 2009 17:22 (UTC) |

Dieting is least of all about food. No, really. Cronic dieters (like myself) are obsessed with food, so we become obsessed with counting and weighing and all the nonsense that goes into dieting. Humans are the only animals that can eat ourselves in the grave. Other animals over eat when they are put in to extremely stressful situations, and with our high tech brains, we can simulate a high stress situation. This makes us eat! I read this all in an article and realized that every time I had a "bad diet day" was after I felt a like it wasn't working, looked a little bloated (etc) and told myself "what's the point?" I was creating high stress situations for myself by putting so much pressure on myself. Try this: Practice the "So Far" Technique

Remember, it takes 3500 burned cals to lose one pound, and I think it would be really difficult (impossible probably) to burn that in two hours, much less the 7000c you'd have to burn to lose two pounds. |

I read in Self magazine this weekend that for every pound you lose during a workout (wish is all sweat/water) you should drink 3 cups of water to make up for it. So yes, it's all water and make sure you get that water back! |

Thanks for the tofu tips! My roommates are NOT vegetarians, but they said if they knew how to cook tofu they would, so let's see if they live up to that! I'm sure egg whites will work just fine. They aren't exactly like pan-cooked scrambled eggs, but they'll be just as good for what you have to work with :) I'm glad I could help! |

ok, I'll go ahead and admit right away that I don't have any ideas. BUT... I was wondering how you cook your tofu!!! I'm a vegetarian, and a I always rely on pre-made meat substitutes or canned beans, etc and never really broke into the tofu thing. I've been meaning to, but I just don't know how to cook it (and I've been a veggie for over a year! shame shame). If you could let me in on what you do with it that would be awesome. Oh, and I guess I do have one idea. My sisters and I used to make scrambled eggs in the microwave when we were kids. You prepare it the same way (eggs and a little milk mixed up in a micro safe bowl) and just microwave for a few minutes, stopping to stir them half way though. Add a little salsa, tomatoes, cheese, spinach, or whatever and you have a great meal for any time of day! |

| Weight Loss | Does anyone else carry a lot of their weight in ONE part of their body? | Oct 15 2008 22:56 (UTC) |

I have what one might call and "hourglass figure"... but it's not working out that well. My chest in 41", my waist is 32", and my butt is 44"... add a tummy pooch and huge thighs, and that's my body in a nut shell. It makes pants impossible to find because they'll fit my butt and have several inches of room in the waist. Shirts are a struggle because if it's not fitted, you can't see my waist line and it looks like I have a 40" waist as well! I hope to loose a little weight everywhere and see what happens... |

| Weight Loss | Losing Weight without Losing Breast Size | Oct 15 2008 22:38 (UTC) |

I had that same problem, but maybe not as drastically as you seem to. I lost my weight first in my butt (one of my prized features if I do say so myself), then in my breasts, and needless to say I was very concerned! I've always been proportional, even at my heaviest (200 lbs). The more I dropped the more evenly it came off and underneath it all, I was still the same shape. I think there will always be awkward stages, but if you keep losing you'll still have the same figure/proportions you always did, just smaller. If you tend to be top heavy and carry your weight mostly in your breasts and stomach, (or vice versa), no matter how you lose you can't change your natural shape. And, as my jazzercise instructor once told me, you can't target weight loss. Even she had a little belly "pooch" when he job was doing workout routines 3x a day! It's just the way she is shaped. When you lose fat you lose it where ever you got it, and there's no way to hang onto the fat you like (unfortunately). So don't despair. If you keep losing, you stomach has to come off some too, and you'll have the same proportions you always had, just healthier (and sexier!). |

I've been brainstorming myself what to bring for a lunch on campus once classes start up again. I have my sandwhiches down, my favorite being: 35 cal bread, smart deli lunch "meats" (vegetarian), hummus (or avocado), tomato slices and LOTS of lettuce For snacks I like: yogurt (Dannon Light&Fit) whole fruit (apples, grapes), or something I sliced myself (watermelon, etc) hummus with baby carrots, pretzels or pita chips for dipping celery and peanut butter (Skippy Natural Creamy is what I like For me, warding off mid-day hunger is about several small healthy snacks. If I only bring one big entree then I'll still feel the need to eat 2-3 hours later. If I'm on the go, I pick up a bean burrito from Taco Bell, "fresco style". It's 350 calories and those beans are pretty filling! Hope this helps!

So... when something bad happens to other people in the world, God is condemming them for being evil. But when their church is set on fire (hell reference anyone???) it's just a hate crime... Looks like someone can't take a divine hint! |

I think the last thing you need is to be scared. You seem to understand the unhealthy effects of your old eating habits, and that's the first step. If you're feeling bloated from 2000 calories, try eating "denser" calories. What I mean is, foods with higher calories per gram. As someone trying to lose weight, I don't have an active list of examples because these are foods I personally try to avoid. But you can still eat healthy food and gain weight. Avocados (for example) have about 300 calories per fruit. Try adding a pudding cup as a dessert after lunch. Don't just slam down candy bars, that will just make you sick and you won't healthfully gain weight. I sympathize with you, and I wish I knew the exact thing to say to motivate you into a healthier lifestyle, but what I've learned about life changes such as gaining/losing weight is YOU have to be ready. If it's self esteem issues, you will look better at a healthier weight, and you'll feel better, mentally and physically. Good luck :)

| Weight Loss | When did you start noticing a change? | Aug 03 2008 19:47 (UTC) |

I think the thing to remember is that pounds on the scale doesn't always mean pounds of fat lost (it could be some water weight, etc). I noticed comparetively early it seems. After only loosing 5 pounds, I saw a difference (very small of course) because I tend to lose weight in my midsection first (lucky me you say... you should take a look at my thighs! I'll be damned if I'm caught dead in shorts). Now that I've been losing for a while now, I seem to notice in sudden bursts. I wake up one day and look at my self in the mirror and think "have I always been this skinny?!", it's a great feeling. But eventually I get used to my new weight and don't feel accomplished anymore. However, that's just more motivation to keep pushing to the next time I feel "suddenly" skinnier! |

I definitely eat my fill of natural protein, but I wanted that extra "boost" that a supplement could give me. Putting a little in my cereal in the morning is a great idea (because there isn't much protein in Honey nut Cheerios!). Thanks for your help and suggestions :) |

| Vegetarian | Veg*ns, where do you get your protein? | Jul 24 2008 00:04 (UTC) |
18 |
Hey, I'm also a vegetarian, and I can't tell you how much I'm harped at by my friends and family about protein! Most non-veggies don't realize how many foods actually are good sources of protein. I pay very close attention to how much I get and probably get as much as they do. Meat substitutes are an obvious choice; they're pretty much pure soy protein. They make substituates for vertually anything you could want! From Boca burgers, to "steak" strips, to "chicken" fingers, to lunch "meats" and veggie dogs, they got it all. It's a little pricey, but that's to be expected. Peanut butter is a big one for me. Or just nuts in general, like almonds or trail mix. And then there are beans. I make a rice and black beans as a dinner entree, but there are TONS of bean receipes. Things like hummus (made with chick peas) are a good source as well. Then there's dairy and eggs. If you're a vegetarian but not vegan, you can still eat these as a good source of protein. But, if you don't eat any animal products, they make substitutes for them as well! How this helps! Happy eating :) |

I understand where you are, and I've been there. It took me almost 2 years to lose 25lbs because I'd lose 10 and then fall off the wagon for a few months before I'd climb back on. To get back on, I'd remember how awesome it felt to look in the mirror when the weight started to come off. It was better than any chocolate bar or deep dish pizza. Try going without treating yourself for a while. For me, going without helped me realize that I didn't really need "it" (chocolate, cookies, fried food, etc) to be happy. Instead of a treat, try and fit what you crave into a healthy meal or snack. I (obviously!) feel like I need chocolate, so I buy chocolate chip granola bars as a snack at work. That way I had a little bit of what I crave and don't feel as deprived.

| Weight Loss | Guess how much I gained yesterday | Jul 20 2008 21:02 (UTC) |

My grandma used to say the food you eat today won't show up on the scale for at least two weeks. I'm not sure how true that is, but one day of a large pizza and a couple donuts won't kill your diet. I agree with the others, probably no more than 0.5 lbs of actual fat. I once weighed myself 3 times in 20 minutes and got 3 different weights. The first time with clothes on pre-bathroom break was a whole 4LBS greater than the last time, naked post-bathroom break. You should weigh yourself once a week and try to be as regular about it as possible, same time of day, same clothes (or naked), after going to the bathroom, everything the same. My mom goes to Weight Watchers and they weigh you in once a week and she makes sure she's wearing the same clothes and she certainly makes sure that she (excuse my potty mouth) poops before she goes! Besides, healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week. Weighing yourself everday won't speed the process anymore. For me (because I used to do it too) it was just discouraging. |

| Weight Loss | Hi, I'm new here and have a few questions. | Jul 20 2008 20:37 (UTC) |
|
I'm brand new to the site as well, but I've lost over 25lbs on my own so far. I was 5'8 and 201lbs when I'm started, and my goal was only 185lbs. I can't tell you how satisfying 173lbs looks in the mirror! The more you lose the more you'll want to lose, and you know you can do it. I don't know how quickly you're looking to lose weight, but simple lifestyle changes make a huge difference. I walk every where I can (up to 2 miles away), or I ride my bike (and hey, with gas prices the way they are, it's more than just weight loss). I also made rules for myself, like no fried foods or no white bread, etc. I started to be satified with healthlier choices than I ever was with junk food. I've been "dieting" for the past two years now, and I know I CAN live the rest of my life this way, and that's key. |
