Weight Loss WHEN do you determine what your true weight is? May 01 2009

I weigh myself daily but I know my weight can fluctuate as much as 4-5 lbs from one day to the next depending on how much water weight is in my system. I consider my true weight to be the lowest point throughout the week.

My reasoning is that day to day fluctuations are caused by water and food that is still in your system. This is stuff that is going to be eliminated, so I don't consider it part of my body (muscle, fat, bone, cartilage, and so on). Therefore your lowest weight has the least of this extra stuff included, making it the most accurate measurement of the true bodyweight.

As far as reaching my goal weight though, I have one day of the week that is the official weigh in day for goals tracking. I know I will reward myself the second time the scale shows me below my goal weight, but I'll probably try to keep up a calorie deficit for at least a few weeks after that to make sure I don't relapse into past bad habits.

Weight Loss How many grams of protein is too little? Apr 30 2009

You are getting plenty at 59g/day. You need roughly 1g/kg of bodyweight daily, unless you are doing intense exercises, then it would be higher.

at 114.5 lbs, your weight in kg = 114.5/2.2 or about 52kg, so you would need about 52 g protein/day.

Another way to calculate it is to get between 15-30% of your daily calories from protein. Protein has 4 cal/g, so 59g = 236 cal from protein. This is sufficient if you are eating Quite a wide margin, but you can see from this that you are getting enough protein if your daily calorie intake is between 787 and 1573.

Fitness Can I Trust My Elliptical? Apr 29 2009

No, I am pretty sure that the estimates on the machine are on the high side. I usually cut the number in half from what the readout is. There is another thread on this site that has a pretty good explanation. See post 12 in this thread:

http://caloriecount.about.com/elliptical-trai ner-calories-burned-ft3218

The way I arrived at the idea that in reality I only burned half of what the machine thinks, is by comparison with the cycling data found at http://www.caloriesperhour.com/ (they have an activity calculator that takes into account your weight, exercise time, and intensity level). I know from my past experience what biking at 12-15 mph feels like, and if I am working about as hard on the elliptical, I should be burning calories at about the same rate. For me this comes out to approx 400 cal/hr, but the elliptical says I burned that much in 30 min.

I agree with the stainless steel solution. A big soup spoon works quite well.

Foods I just realized that my beans are "in sauce"... Sep 18 2008

I'm also trying to avoid added sugar. Why the **** do food packagers have to add sugar to freakin' everything???? Grrr. sorry just had to get that out.

Sugar is water soluble, whether in HFCS or another form, so rinsing the beans well should be fine.

...Don't go on a diet, change your thinking and your eating habits. That is really the only thing that works. Sorry for being preachy.

Preach on, sister betzc! I mean, thanks I needed to hear that Smile

Veering back on topic, though - to OP:

In short, I think it's a scam and you should follow coach_k's advice about veggies, whole grains, and plenty of H2O instead.

In more detail, I have a little experience with a pH balanced diet that was based on ayurvedic (Indian traditional medicine) principles. I didn't lose any weight, but I certainly felt better. I think this was just because it was based on sound nutrition - lots of vegetables, no refined sugar. The main reason I didn't stick with it, is well my buddy was cooking the food for me and I never got into it enough to learn the recipes.

If you're talking about the alkaline diet promoted by Robert Young, however, I would recommend checking out the wiki, and follow some of the links from there:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkaline_diet

It seems that the only people who have anything good to say about it are the people who are trying to make money off of it. There is no good scientific evidence to back it up, and the originator has been convicted of practicing medicine without a license! This is a pretty blatant scam IMHO to sell people unnecessary supplements.

The Lounge Nude Modeling for Art Sep 02 2008

IMHO, nudity and sex are completely separate things. Art of the nude figure is usually about celebrating the human body, or sometimes it is used to symbolize  abstract concepts like innocence or vulnerability. Of course there are no constants in the art world, so I am sure others will have differing opinions.

There's nothing crass or whorish about being a nude model for an art school, though. Anyone who would make that association needs to get their mind out of the gutter if you ask me.

Weight Loss Dairy Products and Belly Fat Aug 22 2008

Yes, it is just about the calcium, but doesn't have to do with belly fat, just fat burning in general.

It turns out that calcium plays a role in the fat burning process, so if you're getting plenty of calcium, your body will be more likely to burn fat for energy. The study in question though, was partially funded by the dairy industry, which may have influenced the findings....Money mouth

There is an article with more detail here: http://www.webmd.com/news/20000417/calcium-lo w-fat-diet, which elaborates on the summary below:

  • According to a recent study in mice, a diet that includes low-fat dairy products can aid weight loss.
  • Researchers say this is because calcium stored in fat cells plays an important role in fat storage and breakdown.
  • Current recommendations encourage men to consume 1,000 mg to 1,200 mg of calcium per day and women to consume 1,000 mg to 1,300 mg daily.
Weight Loss Log what you eat or Eat for your log? :) Jul 25 2008
16:27 (UTC)

Normally I just log what I eat, but when I check the analysis and things are out of whack, I will adjust my choices. This is the usefulness of such a tool for me and one of the reasons I use this site.

This topic caught my eye because yesterday afternoon I noticed that about 2/3 of the way through the day my calories were coming from something like 75% carbs, 10% fat and 10% protein. So I had a protein shake with some peanut butter to even things out a bit (I am going for 50-25-25, respectively).

Congrats. I wonder if there is a corollary of Murphy's law that says the area where you want to lose weight will be the last place from which your body burns fat.

I have heard that there are spots where your body will prefer to store fat, meaning this is the first place it goes if you gain, and the last place to shrink when you slim down. This is part genetics but primarily gender - men lose from their belly last and women lose from their glutes last.

Good luck on reaching your final goal weight.

Here's one I like. It is more of a Greek style salad (with feta and olives), and it is South Beach Phase 1 compatible, which means it should be pretty guilt free. Note: it is kinda salty, so you might want to omit the olives, salt, and/or the feta if that is a concern for you

Weight Loss Advice:Smokers/Former Smokers Jul 24 2008

I quit smoking something like 8 years ago. I gained 10 lbs in 2 months, but this was before I ever cared about nutrition or my physical shape. I know it had at least something to do with diet, as I replaced the cigarettes with sunflower seeds and M&Ms. Cracking the seeds gave my hands something to do, which really eased the transition for me, but then again they are calorie dense and I wasn't exercising.

So... it is said that the wise learn from the mistakes of others. What I would recommend from my mistakes is to join a gym right away and have a trainer set you up with a suitable exercise plan. I did this after I gained the weight, and the cardio work was a real eye opener to how much damage I did to myself while smoking. Thus it became motivation to stay "smober"

Ewww. I think that just put me off most bulk foods for good. I always worried about people's grubby hands with produce, but in the bulk bins there are usually signs everywhere saying to get a clerk for a sample. That's just gross; who knows where else those hands have been if he had such little regard in that situation. Some people's children...

Vegetarian Protiens and Amino Acids in relation to mood swings Jul 24 2008
02:07 (UTC)

Yes, I have taken amino supplements for mood control. I currently take GABA for anxiety and also just to help me sleep. GABA really works for me, and I think it is more than the placebo effect. I have tried 5-HTP but in my case it over- corrected and I didn't feel quite like myself. Amino supplements can have a powerful effect on mood, sometimes even more than the commonly prescribed psychiatric meds out there.

I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I usually have problems if I don't take care of myself, but as long as I take my supplements religiously, I am okay. As a side note, that changed for me when I recently changed my diet after joining this site, but that's another thread.

I also take Inositol for the anxiety, but that is not an amino. For depression, I take other supplements that don't have to do with aminos, namely EFAs and essential minerals.

I have taken a few stabs at going vegetarian and had the reverse of your experience. I found that I was mentally foggy, fatigued, and had skin, nail, and hair problems when I wasn't eating meat. I know this makes me an official Bad Person due to the environmental impact and animal suffering of factory farms, but my personal health seems to have a tighter grip on my behavioral determinations than does my moral compass. That's probably another thread, too though. Foot in mouth

Motivation Is it normal to experience grumpiness after changing eating habits? Jul 23 2008

Original Post by gi-jane:

Some people that have an especially poor diet can report they feel irritable in the first few weeks of chaning to healthier foods. This seems especially true if they used to eat a lot of sugary foods, processed stuff, caffeine, alcohol... and have reduced them significantly.

Well that hit the nail on the head. I had been pretty much eating junk food (and I wasn't exactly a teetotaler) before I got on a scale and had my wake up call.

I have switched to a lot of vegetables and mostly steamed or sauteed lean meats (Tuna, Salmon, Boneless skinless chicken breast). If I saute/stir fry, I only use Canola oil now. Yes, I do feel deprived. I am trying to cut down but I still haven't gotten off my chips ahoy habit. Guess I just have to get used to it.

Kathygator, thank you for your advice as well, I will go check out the tools again, using my weigh ins as a guide.

Fitness how long to rest between weight training.... Jul 23 2008

There are differing schools of thought on this, but the general consensus is at least 48 hours is required. It may be even longer for you to recover.

For recommended workouts, there is a great site here:

http://exrx.net/Lists/WorkoutMenu.html#anchor 1681625

There is a lot of info here, but you can start there and dig deeper as you see fit. I'd also recommend Body for Life or the workouts on Men's Health:
