Weight Loss Carbs in macro %'s Nov 08 2009

Hedgren - Yes, I am sure! I've decided to make another go of it. But I am going to try to not be so anal about it this time, and just stay as near as I can. I don't expect to be perfect. Thanks for the concern though.

Chrissy - Not to worry.. my goals are not unhealthy. I'm aiming for 1,600 with a 55/30/15 split. Yesterday was a bit of an off day. I just ate what I usually ate and decided to check the macro's at the end to get an idea of where I'm at. Probably wasn't so accurate though. I ended up with a fever in the evening and my calories were freakishly low.

Don't have a fever right now, could be the tylenol I took before bed, but I'm still sooo not hungry.

ohhhhh no no noooooo. Your calorie needs vary on independent factors. If you're heavier, taller, more muscular... these are all things that will affect how many calories YOU personally need a day, along with how active you are. 1,200 is the basic guideline to not go under, which it sounds like you are. You'll have to calculate your BMR and make sure you don't fall below that number - forget about the 1,200. I'm really short and about 10 lbs. from my goal weight and even I can't function on that little.

Do you need help figuring out your BMR?

Weight Loss Halloween Blues Nov 02 2009

Halloween is my favest holiday, so I didn't make myself suffer by denying myself in any way. I had what I wanted, however much I wanted, but I made sure I still counted everything. Turned out I ate over 1,000 calories in candy, and that didn't include the ice cream I had later. I ate almost 3,000 in total for the day, but I was kinda surprised to see that I was only about 500 over maintenance. And today I pretty much broke even and made that up without even trying. So I'm back on track to where I was Friday night.

Weight Loss Exercise before eating, or after? Oct 28 2009
17:16 (UTC)

If I don't exercise shortly after getting up in the morning, I never will. There are other things I wanna do during the day, so I like to get the exercise "out of the way". I know you're not supposed to view it as a chore, you're supposed to find something you ENJOY doing, but as the weather gets colder all the enjoyable forms of exercise are taken away from me! *cries*

Most people will tell you that for health's sake, you need to jump right into eating more to gain weight back. I both agree and disagree. Yes, the longer you keep undereating the worse your condition will become. But if you just jump right into it, not only will it shock your body (which is also not healthy), but it's detrimental on the mental part, even if you're seeing a therapist while doing it. It takes a LOT of time, determination, dedication, and a strong will to get better.

I won't lie to you, when you start increasing calories you will gain weight. You have severely slowed your metabolism. Your body is trying to function on the average number of calories you feed it, and if you don't give it much it's gonna save what you eat and eat it's muscle to fuel your activity. Eating itself further lowers the metabolism.

But in regards to trying to eat more and exercises you should do, I would suggest NO exercise and an increase in calories, starting out at least at 1,000 and work your way up from there. Anorexia is a mental disorder, so I know it's gonna drive you absolutely insane. To minimize that I would just say to start out slowly. Add a few calories here and there to whatever you usually eat. Add a tbsp. of olive oil to your veggies, add some nuts to your salad. Put some peanut butter on that apple or celery! It's the little things that can add up. Add flaxseed to oatmeal or as extra crunch on your salads. Drink 2% milk instead of skim and gradually work up to whole. There are plenty of high calorie foods you can add without adding too much bulk in the stomach. The bloating and feeling of fullness are the worst parts, that's why I suggest increasing a lil' at a time. Not only is it physically uncomfortable, but mentally as well. Baby steps are the key. And absolutely do not weigh yourself. Get somebody to take it away. If you "hide" it yourself, you'll end up just digging it back out again to check the "damage".

As for exercise, don't do anything that burns too many calories. Walking is the best thing to do. It'll help with digestion, mentally keep you sound because you're moving, and it's just healthy in general for anyone. And if you can handle it, try lifting some weights. Nothing fancy, just enough to help build back some muscle you've lost.

And finally, if you're not seeing a nutritionist, counselor, doctor, or any kind of therapist, you should consider doing so. Although not completely impossible, your chances of recovering are a LOT greater with some extra help, support, and advice. You need someone to keep pushing you forward if you should start to slip backwards.

Health & Support Wheat/Gluten Sensitivity? Oct 28 2009

Thank you for the replies! I'm currently testing out certain foods to see what kind of reaction I'd have/not have. I am eating them on an empty stomach, so like basically for breakfast, by themselves and not mixed with anything.

This morning I had cream of rice. I feel fine after eating it, I just don't like it. Undecided It started out sticky and then as it sat in the bowl it turned watery. Yesterday I tried some gluten free bread and I could barely swallow it, it was so mushy and sticky in the mouth.

If it's not wheat or gluten, and it's a blood sugar issue like Hedgren mentioned, wouldn't I have the same reaction after eating anything with carbs?

Weight Loss Is your digital scale consistant Oct 28 2009

Original Post by bigkorean:

I use to have a cheap Taylor Digital scale around $30. Same issue. Weight could be off by 2 pounds within 30 seconds of weighing.

I then bought a Tanita Iron Man Scale (Retail was like $100-$140 I think) but I looked on ebay and found it for maybe $80-$100 (I bought it 2 years ago so I don't quite remember). I never had a problem since.

So far, I do not regret spending more on a product that works. If you have the budget for a better scale, go for it. If it's not financially feasible, then I would just average the 2 different readings when you weigh in.

I've been using the same Taylor digital scale for about 5 years now and I've never had a problem with it. And I've only needed to change the battery once.

I'd consider myself a milk chocolate junkie. Anything milk chocolate, I'll devour! (I was born with Chocoholism, thanks mom lmao) But I've slowly made the transition over to dark chocolate, and after eating regular milk chocolate again it's just not as satisfying to me anymore.

But darker is not always better as far as taste goes. The darker you go, the more bitter it is. I tried an 80% chocolate bar once, and it was just a teeny notch up from actually eating baking chocolate. lol It certainly killed all cravings for anything that I had! hahaha And not even water could get the taste out.

I make my meal plan the night before. But I choose one meal that I know I REALLY want to eat and work around it. Like if I know I want lasagna for dinner, I'll calculate that first and if it comes out to 500 calories then so be it - I'll just have a lighter breakfast and lunch. If I know that I wanna have eggs with cheese, bacon, and toast for breakfast.. that's higher in calories than usual, but I'll start with that and again work around it.. maybe only having a garden salad for lunch and soup for dinner, or just skip dessert.

Maybe you wanna binge around lunch time because you are going too long between that and breakfast? How long are they inbetween? Maybe you should try oatmeal and an apple for breakfast, then the yogurt and some string cheese. A salad with some fat and protein would be better for lunch, like what you have listed for dinner, along with the other apple if you insist on having more than one a day. But try more variety.

A sandwich made of turkey/ham/or chicken, low fat cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, and your choice of condiment on whole grain bread keeps me full for a long time.

That is so effin' annoying. Why can't anyone support each other? Why are there always those few that wanna sabotage someone else's efforts? That just irks me. Especially since she is your sister... that's all the more reason to be SUPPORTING you instead of flaunting *false* success. I totally wouldn't doubt that the weight she writes on the calendar is a lie. Are you there with her when she weighs-in?

Weight Loss how do I know if what I do is good enough? Oct 24 2009

Still, it frustrate me that a week on calorie intake advised 1920c a day will make me put on weight.

Maybe I do not burn as much calorie as I think, nevertheless I am way under my intake limit.

From personal experience, I found that I lost more weight when I had a day or two going overboard. I stayed with low calories and ate over 2,000 a couple days a week...not on purpose but because I physically felt ravenous. lol The weight started to come off quicker than it had before, and it made me realize I was underestimating my burn, therefore underestimating my deficit. And too large of a deficit can also put a stall on weight loss over time as well.

So it just might pay to invest in something like the Body Bugg or GoWear Fit if you have a lil' extra money.

All I can tell you is that you are eating far too little to handle as much exercise as you stated. This will result in more plateau's and a lowered metabolism if you're not careful. And then your goal will be impossible to reach without further starving yourself.

You easily catch a cold or another virus when you eat that little because your body isn't getting all it's nutrients to keep the immune system working. Eventually a simple cold will take you FOREVER to get rid of. And God only knows what will happen should you happen to catch the flu bug. Just be careful and take care of yourself.

I advise that you show this plan to your trainer and see what she has to say. You seem determined to do this plan, so I really don't think any of us can convince you otherwise, but hopefully your trainer will have some influence.

Please take care of your health. Smile

What kind of coffee are you drinking? Regular? I know caffeine is "supposed" to suppress appetite, but I actually find that the more coffee I drink, the hungrier or more snacky I feel.

Try replacing one of the coffees with tea, or just heat up some plain water and add a flavor packet to it like crystal light or some other sugar free enhancer. This is what I do, because I can't stand the taste of tea. lol The water will not only keep you hydrated, but also because it's hot it should keep you feeling full.

I say it's completely fine. It's what I do. I've recently changed my goal (increasing calories to avoid binging) to 1,700 a day. This is 11,900 a week. So if I only eat 1,500 for 5 of the days, I can eat 2,200 on Sat. & Sun. I call it "banking" or "saving" cals, but the trick is to not save too many. You wanna make sure you eat enough each day.

Weight Gain Belly Bloat Oct 21 2009

Just a quick question... why DOES your belly bloat when you are trying to regain weight? Even if you're not eating bulky food to take up a lot of space, cuz I can understand that would stretch the stomach to make room, but if you eat a lot of things like nuts and maybe drink high calorie shakes, your stomach wouldn't need to stretch, so why the bloat?

I have asthma and I'm "required" to get the seasonal flu shot every year. When I was younger I'd have reactions, like a 24-hour fever, but as I aged those reactions went away and now all I'm left with is a sore arm afterwards.

But I'm still just gonna take my chances on this other vaccine. It's too new and unfamiliar to my body for me to trust it. I got too many things coming up to risk trying to fight off some potential side effects.

Yes, some people will die or miscarry after receiving the vaccine, but you know what? People die and miscarry every day.

That alone is enough reason to avoid it. If a pregnant woman miscarries after getting vaccinated, she'll never forgive herself. And true, we'll all die of something, but chances are it'll be later rather than sooner and not from a shot. When death wants me, it'll take me without any assistance. lol

Now I do understand that these are extreme cases. But I still prefer to let things be natural and come and go as they are. My mind was made up at the very first mention of these vaccines. Laughing

My lunch breaks at work are only 30 minutes, so I try to pace myself to that time. If I'm home, I can drag it out to an hour because I'm usually on the internet. I can't type and eat at the same time, so it slows me down.

Usually for meat the package specifies the serving for either raw or cooked. Like the chicken breasts I buy say they are 110 calories for 4 oz raw, which turns out to be a lil' less when cooked. If there's no nutrition info on the package, when you look it up online I would assume it's for cooked unless specified otherwise. But it's not including what you cook it in, like oil or sauces.

Pasta is always measured dry.

You can eat the actual nut instead of the butter if you want something crunchy to snack on. Add almonds, walnuts, or even avocado to your salads. Grill your veggies in Olive Oil. Switch from "light" yogurt to just reduced or even whole. Have a few scrambled eggs for breakfast some mornings - yolks included. Bananas are sort of high in calories, and they don't fill me up, so I don't eat them too often. A large is about 200 calories. Switch from your sandwich thins (those are 100 calories right?) to a more hearty/whole grain type of bread. Something that's like 100 cals per slice. If you don't already eat it, start including some dark meat into your diet. It contains more fat than white meat so it's a bit more calorie dense in that way.

I just want to say that you are not alone. I've also been struggling to get back to normal for a couple months now. Everyday I have new determination, but by late afternoon somehow it all gets thrown out the window. My willpower seems to have run away like yours. My only advice is to cut your calories back slowly. Don't try to rush jumping back into weight loss. Take care of ending these binges first.

Here's my advice:

What's your calorie target for weight loss? Make sure it's not under your BMR, and that you're not losing more than 1% of body weight in a week. Once you have a healthy target you can slowly work towards that goal following a plan.

1. Take a week to just focus on listening to your body's hunger signals. Don't have a number to aim for. Eat when you're hungry, don't when you're not. If a craving strikes, before indulging try to pinpoint what brought it on. A smell? A visual like a picture or seeing someone else eat? Once you recognize it, determine whether or not you actually want it. Go ahead and indulge. Afterall, nothing is off limits. The only catch is you HAVE to write down everything you eat.

2. After you take a weekly average, start reducing your intake by 100-200 a day. Do not go more than this, cuz you might trigger yourself into binging again. You might find you are still eating at or over maintenance at this point, depending on how much you ate the first week, but that's okay. Stay away from the scale, your priority at the moment is to end the binging.

3. Every week keep reducing your calories by 100-200 until you reach your target for weight loss.

So if in the first week you averaged 2,500 a day and your goal is 1,700 it would look like this:

Week 1: 2,500
Week 2: 2,300
Week 3: 2,100
Week 4: 1,900
Week 5: 1,700

You can do it. Good luck!
