I always smuggle in my snacks, have to have "crunchy/salty" = popcorn (bring my own), than of course something "sweet"= m&m's, a couple pieces of licorice or some other snack size goodie. Of course, than I purchase a large diet coke . . probably more to assuage the guilt I feel about breaking the rules by smuggling in my own snacks! I love the cereal idea, not sure why I hadn't thought of that one myself since I snack on cereal all the time at home. You could also bring the small crystal light packets and add one to a water if you like something sweet to drink that isn't a soda. |

Don't forget Pumpkin soup! it's tasty and low cal (well, depending how you make it!) There are a lot of soup recipes in CC, I make mine as a savory dish using onions, carrots, celery, garlic and low sodium chicken broth. Curry pairs well with pumpkin too so you can really play around with your spices. |

OMG! these were so great! One of my favorite new "breakfast" things. Playergirl - the mini's were awesome and you are right, just literally a little bite. No, I had my normal fruit/protien smoothie for breakfast and the muffie's we a nice additional touch plus the folks I work with all were able to have a little taste without cutting into a larger cake. BTW - they all loved them too! We are competing in our own "Biggest Loser" contest at work so everyone is sharing and showing off their new recipes and this one is a winner. |

Alot of my fave's are already listed, but if you eat yogurt you have to try their greek style yogurt. I absolutely love it, the nonfat honey & blueberry are my favorite, not too tangy, and they definately do not have the overly sweet & chemical taste of other yogurts, plus 12 - 13 grms of protein in one 6 oz container! If you like crackers try the lowfat Ak-Mak crackers. They are 100% whole wheat, stone ground sesame crackers. Really great flavor, one entire sheet (5 large pieces) are only 115 calories. TJ brand of Sundried tomatoes in olive oil and herbs, raw almonds (low salt version or plain), pignoli's, fresh mozzeralla, fresh basil . . .tropical fruit flo's (popsicle), depending on the flavor the calories vary but the mango is around 80 cal and it's a full size popsicle with chunks of fruit. They are great and satisfy my sweet tooth. |

I know you were asking for healthy oil alternatives and although I use the Pam olive oil spray on occassion I prefer to use a tsp of the real stuff. It sounds like you enjoy your zucchini sauted nice and brown . .yum, me too. I now use a grill pan . . . I'm trying to think of what the actual name of it is . . it's the kind that you use on the top of an outside "gas grill", it has holes in in to allow the flame and heat to come through. I add my sliced zucchini, summer squash, onions and peppers (really what ever kind you want) to a large ziploc baggie, add a teaspoon of olive oil (or marinate in your favorite marinade, I like italian), add your garlic salt and other favorite seasonings and shake up so they are all coated. Toss in the grill pan, cook over a med-high flame, stirring (or tossing) until cooked through and browned. Completely yummy. The pan I have is coated so it really doesn't take much oil at all and they are completely delish.

Making this tonight to take to work in the AM. My workmates are always asking about what new recipes I've tried, etc. I mentioned this one and they are all excited to try it out. Love the idea about using the mini muffin tin, that will be a great way to divide it up into smaller bites. |

Marinate the chicken breast overnight in a light italian dressing, either bake in the toaster oven until done or use your george forman. A variation on this is to dip the breast in an egg white, roll in italian bread crumbs to coat. Pour a little light italian dressing over the top of the breast and bake until done. Do you have a stove or electric skillet? An easy skillet recipe is for rosemary chicken. Sprinkle salt, pepper and granulated garlic on the breast. Spray a skillet with olive oil spray (Pam) or use a little olive oil, over med-high heat saute a couple whole cloves of garlic (I give them a quick smash first) until lightly browned, add chicken and brown on both sides (approx 5 min), add approx. 1/2 cup of chicken broth (or white wine), sprinkle the chicken breast with 1/4 tsp of chopped fresh rosemary or dried. Broth should be simmering, cover and allow chicken to cook through, maybe another 10 - 15 minutes. It depends on how thick the breasts are, sometimes I pound the fatter end so they are the same thickness, then they cook faster and more evenly. If the broth is cooking away, add more, you want to have a little "sauce" to pour over your chicken when you serve it. |

I love it! I laughed when I read the title of this post, I am snacking on Kashi Autumn Wheat cereal as I write this . . .had 300 calories to go . . .thought about ice cream, went for the cereal! I usually eat it dry as a snack, or if I didn't make time for breakfast I measure out my serving, toss it into a baggie and take it to work and "snack" on it during the morning. Cereal mixing, hmmm I have never mixed my cereal . . .I have no idea why . . but I have 4 different boxes open in my pantry. I'm thinking I'm going to have to try that soon. My all time fave - Capt'n Crunch, but of course it is like crack to me, seriously addicting! I can't have it in the house or I will eat the entire box! |

This is good! I've made it for years using extra-lean turkey breast, low sodium taco seasoning and red kidney beans with the pinto, or sometimes spicy chili beans which have a little kick. I'm not sure what Rotel is? I add canned tomatoes to mine. It's thick and rich and very filling all on it's own. I'm so glad you posted this, it's a great reminder for me. |

This sounds yummy! 2 of my favorite things, pumpkin and oatmeal. Thanks for posting this, I must have missed the other version you mentioned. Darn, just checked out my "oatmeal" and I have the quick cook kind, have to run to the store . . .I wonder what happens if you use the quick kind of oats? Must not hold up as well. So, is the texture going to be "cake-like" or will it be firmer like a pumpkin pie? |

When I had mine out, all 4 at once, semi-impacted I opted to get knocked out. I was more freaked out by being awake and having 4-teeth pulled than I was about the IV. Honestly, I think everyone's stories had me more scared than it really was, I was fine. The IV (thingy) was really tiny, I didn't even feel it, (having blood drawn is far worse from my perspective) they told me to count back from 100 and literally all I remember was thinking "100" .. . next thing, the nurse was shaking my shoulder and saying my name. The funny thing, I was in a completely different room, yet I didn't even remember being led into it! They did give me a prescription for pain (I don't remember what) and told me to take it as directed for the 1st 24-hours and not to wait for the achey/pain to start, I took it and I didn't have a problem and trust me I am a really big wimp when it comes to pain. I was a little swollen and didn't have any bruising. I had mine removed on a Friday morning and was back to work no problem on Monday. If you think you have a possible infection, than like the others recommended you'll need to get an antibiotic first. I don't think they will pull the teeth if you have an infection. Also, for OTC pain relievers you might want to try Oragel or Orajel (not sure of the spelling). You rub it on your gums and it numbs them. I think it might be made for babies who are teething and you should be able to find it in shopping aisle with toothpaste. I've also heard rubbing Oil of Clove on the gum is supposed to help with the pain, but I've never tried it. GOOD Luck! I think you'll do fine.

Izzy, Cissy, Midge, Beautiful (Beauty), Little Miss, Missy . . .someone suggested Mia, I like that one too. I usually wait and see the personality of the kitty before I give them a final name, but they kind of name themselves. My girl kitties are Bandita Noel (Bandit for short - why? because she is a little thief! she loves to take my jewelry, it's hysterical to see her running down the hallway with a necklace trailing behing her), Squeaker Marie (Squeak, why? because she talks in short, completely adorable little squeaks) and Buggy Sue (morphed from Lovebug, why? she is the most loving kitty I've ever had, always looking for the snuggle and gives delicate little kisses) . . my boys are Taz Michael (as a kittin he was a complete tazmanian devil, whirling and spinning as he raced around the house, hanging off of curtains, etc!) and Stripes (Striper because he has the most handsome and distictive brown stripes and is my handsome little man). |

Ohhh . . .I love coffee . . .yum. I usually drink it black (usually french pressed, really good qualitycoffee) with just a sprinkle of raw sugar or sometimes I make a latte at home, since I don't have a fancy coffee maker with the steamer I just brew a fresh ground espresso or just a stronger blend in my drip maker, I heat up my nonfat milk on the stovetop, with a cinnamon stick and a vanilla bean (or add a tsp of vanilla extract) when it's hot I whisk it which makes it nice and foamy and split it 1/2 & 1/2 with my coffee, top it off with the foam and grate a little fresh nutmeg on the top. . . ohh . .it's like a dessert for me. My favorite flavored coffee is chocolate velvet . . . that's really good. I love the idea of freezing the leftover coffee and blending it into a slushy mixture - I'm definately going to start doing that from now on!

I know this wasn't really your question, but I noticed you said your water tasted like chlorine (I agree, yuk!). I didn't care for the taste of my tap water either so I purchased a Brita water pitcher/filter thingy (sorry, I don't know the actual name of it) . . .you've probably seen them before at Target, Walmart, Sam's club etc. I was surprised that it really worked and filtered out all the icky taste from my tap water. I keep the pitcher in the fridge so I always have cold, fresh tasting water. I also make my tea out of herbal tea bags so it is naturally decaf . . .of course, now I use my filtered water for everything, when I make tea, coffee or even mixing up crystal light. |

| Foods | Butternut squash vs potato | Sep 10 2008 04:09 (UTC) |

I think it somewhat comes down to personal choice, but foods that are commonly referred to as "starchy" kind of get a bad rap, they are carbs . . . and we need good carbohydrates to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. I try to make mine more of the whole grain variety, but I don't stress over the veggie carbs. . . . just for grins and giggles go to the "new recipe" section and get the nutritional value for 1 cup of butternut squash, then try it with 1 cup of sweet potatoes and again for 1 cup of corn and do a comparison. I tried it because I was curious when I saw your question. They all have a Grade A and Ifound that butternut squash came in with the lowest cals (63), vit A was off the charts and vit C was really high as well, the swt potatoe was 177 cals, but it was also high in fiber, vit C . . etc. overall pretty similar. If you value the lower calories you find in the squash then I suppose you could consider it better for you, but they looked pretty comparable. Because I am counting my calories I personally liked the values attached to the squash, but in terms of being healthier I think it might be a close call. |

I like it mashed with salt, pepper, a little skim milk and then I sprinkle some fresh grated parmesean cheese over the top - yummy! I've even sprinkled a little italian bread crumbs on the top with the parm and stuck it under the broiler to brown the top and make it all crispy - really yummy! I'm thinking I came across the mashed cauli recipe in my South Beach Diet book . . . although I'm sure I have tweaked the original recipe. |

I attached a really easy rosemary chicken recipe. It literally has 4 ingredients, which you may already have in your kitchen. I usually buy the bags of frozen, boneless, skinless chicken breasts. The size of the chicken will effect your overall calories so you might want to measure it, or at least use the estimate on the bag. Plus if you don't want to use the little bit of butter & oil in the recipe, use a spray oil (Pam) and instead of using the whole garlic sprinkle the breasts with a little granulated garlic at the same time you salt & pepper. http://caloriecount.about.com/recipe/143139.h tml I've been making this for years. I got the recipe from the cookbook, 365 Ways to Cook Chicken. It's great, all the recipes are really simple and tasty and several are prepared in a low calorie way. |

One of my favorites: Whisk together in a small bowl: 1 small shallot (minced), 2 tbsp sherry vinegar, 1 tbsp red wine vinegar and 2 tsp dijon mustard. Gradually whisk in 1/3 cup of olive oil, 1/4 tsp salt and a dash of fresh ground pepper. If you like your dressings a little sweeter you can add a tiny bit of sugar.

This is actually a recipe for an appetizer, but it is soooo good I could eat the entire recipe! I've had friends who insist they don't like mushrooms, they try this and are hooked. It's incredibly easy and delish, I listed it to serve with crackers or toast points, but really you could scoop it up and eat it with anything (that you think would be good with mushrooms) I'm thinking scoops on endive lettuce would be good too . . .plus I use it as my mushroom layer when I make beef wellington OMG! it is to die for . . . oh, this recipe is from the New Basics Cookbook and it is called potted mushrooms. http://caloriecount.about.com/recipe/143134.h tml

| The Lounge | I'm being stalked. Help? | Sep 03 2008 05:08 (UTC) |

Hopefully you've had luck in finding someone to help you out. If you are still looking for a solution, check to see if you have any animal rescue organizations within driving difference, Rescues are different than shelters (although I concur with the no-kill shelter sentiment, but they are difficult to find). Rescues usually often have their own network of people who volunteer their time to trap strays, foster qne locate homes for them. If you aren't finding listings for any local rescues, like Clairelaine suggested, definately check with your local vets. They know who the local animal "rescue" folks are and most would probably be willing to post a notice on their bulletin board and possibly even make a couple of calls for you. They will also drive a fair distance to rescue an animal, so don't count them out if they don't live in your city. I have a several other suggestions, but if your issue is resolved (since I'm really late in the game responding!) I won't waste your time. Please, don't get discouraged if you are hearing a lot of "no" and "we're full" responses. Please post again, I think from the above response you can tell a lot of people would have additional suggestions for youl. I have been fortunate to operate rescue and a TNR program for stray/feral cats very successfully and have found people will step up and help out when you least expect it. Good luck!

My sister sent me a longer, thinner loaf pan that she purchased at the King Arthur Four store, maybe that would work for you. You can most likely order it off their website, plus they have really great recipes you might want to check out as well. I promise I don't work for them, my family and I have just always enjoyed their products |

We grew up with a beautiful and spoiled Golden Retriver (Ben) who would carry his food bowl into the room when you were eating and stand in front of you waiting for you to "share" a taste of what you were eating. My family traditionally would enjoy dessert (usually ice cream) later in the evening sitting around watching TV. In would come "Ben" with his bowl in his mouth, he'd make the rounds with everyone dutifully adding a spoonful of ice cream, once he got his goodie from everyone he would set his bowl down in the middle of the room and settle in to enjoy his dessert with us. Still makes me laugh remembering. |

I was surprised following a gain last week I'm to down 1.4 lbs to hit 168 (yea!) Go figure, last week I worked out 5 days of cardio and 3 w/ weights and gained 0.8 . . .this week because I was discouraged and super busy and stressed at work I didn't work out one day, cheated (a lot) and now I lose! Do you ever just want to have a little chat with your "body" and tell it to behave dinarly - your total weigh loss is fantasitic! I was really discouraged last week as well . . .have you tried that zig zagging calories? I keep reading about it and it seems like it works and I think I did that last week without trying . . .Might be worth a try. Hang in there, I only hope I can do as well as you. |
