I think your cat will be fine.  It may have some intestinal problems, which will come out in the litter box. I caught my daughters cat chewing on my protein bar, so I think it will be ok.  Our new cat was fed off the table by my mom who thinks her cats are babies.  It is hard to break them to just eating cat food.  My other cat broke into my fish food and ate all my algea tablets (she is crazy for algea tablets).  I was not concerned since it was mainly plant matter, I figured she would be ok.  She also ate my spider plant to the ground.  Cats have a habit of eating strange stuff.

Health & Support Sleep Deprived! PLEASE HELP! Sep 04 2008

Hopefully you will read this.  I am insomniac and I work a rotating shift job, so i have some serious sleep problems.  I would say watch your caffeine intake or limit youself way before your bedtime.  I have taken some prescription sleep aids, which I do not recommend on the long term.  I would say check with your doctor to see if he or she can offer you something for a short time.  Over the counter sleep aids, leave me drowsy for hours after I wake up and that is not a very good thing, esp. since I like to be alert.  Taking simply sleep instead of Tylenol Pm is just the sleep aid of Tylenol PM and not the pain reliever, so I would suggest that.  I personally can not sleep listening to a radio because I listen to the radio instead of sleeping.  Since it is your move to college that is probably affecting your sleep patterns, maybe it will go away with time.  Maybe your eating patterns have changed with a roommate.  It could be a variety of things.  Maybe you are nervous about college.  Either way if you are sleep deprived, I would recommend seeing your doctor if it does not correct itself soon.  Good luck in college.

Motivation Do You Hold Your Stomach In? All the time? Sep 04 2008
19:55 (UTC)
27

Yeah, holding it in does aid your posture and abdominals.  I think that the purpose of it is trying to get your posture correct, because usually a sloucher has both incorrect posture and usually higher body fat.  I think I would suck it in, if I had a large stomach.  The stomach will decrease with exercise and dieting, but remember for a man it is the body's fat storage area so it leaves slowly and with persistence.  If you cut your calories too much it will sag more because the muscle tissues need a certain amount of calories to function.  So you don't want to burn muscle to try to rid yourself of fat.  When I drop weight, I notice my stomach starts to sag more.  However, if you watch, the XMA fighters of TV, when they cut weight or drop a weight class you can see their fat jiggling when they are bouncing before they start fighting.  Don't be discouraged, it takes time.  Keep sucking it in to help your posture.  Good luck.

The Lounge So I dont think My husband gets I want to fit into my old Jeans.... Sep 01 2008

I do think society in general places more emphasis on a thin woman than a thin man.  A gut on a man is sometimes overlooked and well I think women have a harder time.  I think that anyone who can not fit in the jeans they used to wear is disappointing.  My weight flunctuates regularly.  I hate to not be able to fit in my Jeans.  I remember my mom trying to squeeze into her jeans.  She must have felt horrible in those tight jeans.  Plus I would think that men have a preconceived notion that a larger wife will not cheat.  Maybe his reluctance to accept your dieting, may be the result of his own insecurity.  Remember it is your body, granted you are his wife, but it is important for you to feel good about your shape.  Good luck on your weight loss.

Weight Loss No food after 6pm question??? Sep 01 2008
02:38 (UTC)
5

I have read in Men's Health that newer studies show that people burn calories in their sleep too.  I would think the only advantage of eating before six is for the the food to go through your system and not be trapped in your intestines if you are doing a morning weigh in.  I think that if you keep your calorie counts where they need to be and eat small meals you should be fine.  I would think that eating after six would be better than a bedtime of 11pm and going 5 hours and purposefully not eating anything and consuming the majority of your calories in the morning and midday.  I do think there is a greater chance of burning calories during the day due to activity.  I work a rotating shift and I am going to eat when I am hungry and as long as I have calories.  I try to eat around 200 - 450 calories at a time.  I Eating in the morning jumpstarts your metabolism because you have been sleeping with no intake for hours.  It is a good Idea to eat after sleeping because you don't want your body to go into starvation mode.  Keep the small meals coming and stay within your calorie counts and you will be fine.

Weight Loss Eating out Aug 31 2008

Original Post by clusterz:

What about taking a few month to lose weight and then resume a normal "thin and sportive" life? ...
And if you love to eat out, it is surely better to eat out when you're at your goal weight and have a huge margin that allows you excess, than "spending years eating out but not really because you're in a diet and must think of whatever your order" which doesn't seem all that appealing to me. But, well, it's your life.

Why on earth should we put our life on hold for a 'few months'?? For me anyway, I'm not cc-ing because I'm 'dieting'- I ultimately want to lose weight, but I'm more concerned with learning and living a healthier way of life in general. I want to be able to go to a restaurant and have a meal like 'normal' people, or have a few beers if I feel like it. Its all about learning about food, and knowing your limits.

I do think there is a balance on what we eat and living a healthy lifestyle.  When you say you are having a few beers you are putting unnecessary calories into your system with very little nutritional value.  I do not see anything wrong with controlled drinking, however, I do not consider it a healther way of life.  I would think that knowing your limits is a good thing.  Also how your body responds to certain foods.  I do think it is a good thing to be a picky eater.  If someone is happy with their weight, I don't see a reason to calorie count.  I have the tendency to gain ten lbs a month if I am not calorie counting.  I live in the United States and I see the average person carrying large hips, huge waistlines with several chins and a huge waist line.  The average restaurant does not care about the size of your hips or the amount of food in their serving or the nutritional value.  They are pushing taste and sales.  If you get a small plate that is a rational portion, most Americans are not going to come back.  I would suggest looking online if you know where you are going.  A salad with a fat free dressing (as long as it is not loaded with bacon and cheese or other fattening toppings)will be fine.  I think the grilled chicken sandwich is a fairly safe bet, plus there is nothing wrong with asking how it is prepared, or leave off the sauce.  Substitute the fries for a healthier option.  Most restaurants have nutrition information on their website.  If not the restaurant may have it upon request.  Usually restaurants with heavy foods are not going to post it has 1200 calories, 70 grams of fat, or etc.  If it posts the nutrition information on the menu it is a good sign.  By no means give up your life, just ask questions about the food, order conservatively, and make healthier choices I think you will be ok.  Besides if you order a triple decker burger with chili fries and strawberry shake or another unhealthy meal nearly every day, you should not have much difficulty in wondering why your jeans don't fit anymore.

Foods Doritos are the DEVIL! Aug 30 2008

Don't buy them.  I would do the same thing.  I love Doritos, there is no substitute for flavor.  Maybe try the light Doritos on occasion. They are truly the Devil.  They taste so good but offer you very little in nutrition.  I am not sure, but artificial flavors taste so good because they are not natural.   They may be natural flavors, but I doubt it.  Remember not to buy them, because they are temptation to you.  It does not make you a bad person or a failure because you partook of some Dorito heaven, just get back up and be strong.  One setback does not equal a failure.  You are only a failure if you don't get back on track and you let one slip up destroy you.  Remember one thing, it is hard to change old eating habits and they die hard.

Foods Healthy chinese food? Aug 30 2008

There is a Chinese restaurant close by that does that.  It is like steamed veggies and white meat chicken with rice.  The rice is white because their brown rice is fried.  I do not like white rice,  but if I go there I eat the white rice.  I add a little soy sauce for taste.  I am not a big advocate of soy sauce, but since my blood pressure is low, my doctor told me to add more salt to my diet so I am not too concerned with sodium since I regularly avoid it.   I think if you can get the selection you stated.  I say enjoy.

I am from the South and I believe in southern hospitality.  If you come to the south I am sure some of us still have the ability to be friendly.  I have had older people say extremely rude things to me over the years.  What would she say if you were to tell her that oil of olay would do the trick on the wrinkles?   I would have told her off, she has no right to treat you that way.  What is sad is that she is old enough to know better.  Good luck on your weight loss.  She only sees you today she does not see where you have been.

Fitness Belly fat Aug 28 2008

Mercy Bobcat told the truth.  Too much cardio burns muscle and not fat.  Try to eat lots of protein and do some weight training.  I work a fast paced production job and I will tell you.  Fast work can burn muscle and it is hard to gain muscle mass working my job.  Make sure you are spacing your meals out too and eating the right kind of things.  If you eat a meal of 1500 calories instead of small meals that equal 1500 calories.  The large meals are worse for you.  I hope what some of this helps you.  Several of the people here have already offered some good advice.  Good luck.

Remember you may have a day like that but you are not a failure because you had a bad day.  Try to control your urges.  I would recommend drinking two glasses of water when you go into the kitchen.  I have read that the body has a hard time distinguishing between thirst and hunger.  Maybe try to get a cereal that is less tasteful or oatmeal that is plain.  I do think people eat because what they like is available.  If you change your oatmeal to plain.  You are not going to eat 4 bowls.  If you cereal is total, you may eat a couple bowls but I don't see 4.  If you change to soy milk you are not going to turn it up.  The areas you are having problems with such as the cereal, oatmeal, or etc.  I am sure are your favorite flavors.  Try to catch yourself before you binge and maybe set a time to eat and that way you can check the clock rather than the fridge or the cubbord.  After a week or success, it will get easier for you.  Good luck.

Foods Need NEW low-cal ideas for LUNCH... Aug 28 2008

Some Ideas for you.  Maybe try a protein bar for some diverstiy.  Add lots of fresh fruits, which I bag and take to lunch all the time.  Whole Grain Bread and sandwich meats make a low calorie option.  I have seen these vegetable steamer bags (I bought some).  Basically you can throw some fresh veggies into a bag and microwave it for steamed vegetables.  Another Ideas I found on an info-mercial - Make homemade chicken salad sandwiches.  Take an apple and slice it up take a chicken breast and cut it up add fat-free Mayonaise blend it together and it makes a great chicken salad sandwich.  I know it sounds bad, but it is really good.  Also you can snack on dry cereal instead of snack food from a machine.  Good luck, hopefully you can use something that I said.

Jenn,

Your boyfriend loves you regardless.  If not the long distance relationship would have killed his physical attraction for you.  Look at it this way.  Your boyfriend is coming to see you because he is all about you, even from a long distance.  Your weight loss is not the purpose of his visit and should not be the priority on your mind while he is there.  You should take the steps you are taking to loose it slow.  You are doing a great job and 2lbs a week could be considered fast weight loss.  You are trying to lose 14lbs, you are not that big.  I wish you the best of luck on your goals and happiness in the visit.

New Members 13 Year Old Fatty Looking for friends and dieting tips! Aug 16 2008
23:33 (UTC)

First of all, I was in the same boat at your age.  I was about 185 and 13 and I know that people are mean.  I lost weight by nearly starving myself to death and dropped 50lbs in a month.  I would however recommend that you not do that since it can be very damaging to your health and I did end up gettting sick as a result.  I would advise you to start counting calories to access the amount of food you are eating.  You do not know where to go if you do not know where you are at.  I would also suggest talking about weight loss with your doctor.  Remember you are still a kid and you should always remember the body you have is the body you will have when you are my age or older so you want to take care of it.  Try to watch your sugar and fat intake because I have kids your age and I know they love things that are not particuliarly good for them.  My kids love pizza and ice cream and that sort of thing.  Try to get some physical activity.  I got both of my kids in karate to help keep some of the weight off of them, because if I let them lay around the house all day like my parents did me, well they would have weight issues, because to be honest my 7yr old and my 12 year old both eat more than I do.  Remember you still have some growing room too.  Depending on how tall you are going to get 190 will look better on you the taller you get, but you have to maintain your weight.  All and all, hold your chin up, talk to your doctor, get your parent's support, count your calories, and good luck. I would say that you should try to eat whole grain foods, low fat meats, watch your dairy, eat lots of fruits and veggies, take your vitamin, and drink lots of water.

I do think a lot has to do with media however, there are medical problems associated with being overweight.  I do not see a reason to lose weight if you are totally happy with your appearance and your health is ok.  I do believe you have to live a little.  I do think life is about happiness.

I have a daughter who is constantly pressured about her weight, however, I think she is normal weight and I tell her so.  I don't like the idea of Barbie being a role model.  Barbie is not shaped like the average woman.  However, if Barbie was the average woman, would she still be around

Wow, sounds like you have had some struggles with your weight.  If you did any major damage to your body, maybe you should consult your doctor who can take a look at your plan to lose and give you some recommendations.  I am not sure about the weight gain could be retention.  I think, but am not sure, that the body learns how to react.  Maybe it is trying to hold onto the weight.  I don't know with your case and I think its best if maybe you talk to your doctor.  I wish you the best of luck.  I think if you eat healthy and have some good physical activity then the weight should start to come off.  Maybe your metabolism is low because of your up and down weight.  Do you think you should give your metabolish more time to rev up.  It does take a couple of weeks to feel the difference and for your body to react.  However with your eating problems...I still say go see the doc to be on the safe side.

Motivation Unsupportive Spouse Aug 02 2008

Dave,

The reason could be insecurity.  Just love her and work with her.  Understand that maybe she feels like with the extra weight you and her are like salt and pepper shakers.  Now you guys don't match.  It makes her feel uncomfortable because she is not used to your size and is uncomfortable.

When she lashes out at you, remember it is not you.  You have the right to be the size you want, especially if it for healthy reasons.  Maybe she needs encouragement.  I would suggest doing something special for her to uplift her.  Maybe take her out on a date, buy her some flowers and tell her how special she is to you.  Maybe something romantic.

As I was eating at a restaurant one day.  I could see women getting out of their cars.  The thin women did not adjust their clothes after getting out of their cars.  The heavy women were constantly tugging at their shirts and adjusting their clothes.  I never saw a thin woman do this.  I do think that the heavy women felt uncomfortable and adjusted.  However, this is just a observation I made while eating one day.  With a body fat percentage usually higher than a man's, I do think women do have a harder time in society.  A little weight shows more.

I still say congratulations on your health and weight loss.  Maybe she is concerned about other women looking at you.  Either way just find ways to make her feel special.  Involve her in your eating, if she will listen.  Good luck.

Weight Loss Family Members Who Mean Well Jul 30 2008
00:54 (UTC)

Well, to be honest with you, I think it is a kind of emotional and mental abuse that is overlooked by society.  Being a large kid, my mom often told me.  "You are fat as h*ll, when you going to lose some weight?"  Being a fat kid, I did not know how to lose weight.  In 8th grade I quit eating.  I lost weight to the concern of the school that they thought I was dying. I went from 185 to 132 in a month.  I several times went to the point of nearly passing out. I got sick when I tried to eat again.  As an 8th grader, I did not know how to lose weight appropriately and I did know that losing weight had to do with eating. I do think it is emotionally damaging for a parent to harp on the weight of a child, even if the child is grown.  I think the world is going to tell them they have a weight problem.  They don't need to hear that from the people who are supposed to love them.  I read once that for every negative comment you make toward your children, you have give them 7 or 8 positives.  That is because the positives are expected and the negatives hurt.  I do harp about healthy choices, but to embarrass them at a function is not a good thing.  However, I look at both of my kids as being healthy.  I started my son off differently than myself, he has no cravings for candy or sweets.  I read somewhere that if you make it readily available from birth until adulthood, it would not be anything special....and most of the time he passes on the sweets by choice.

The thing you have to do is figure out a way to ignore him if you can, if you can't ignore him, you need to confront him and let him know that it hurts your feelings and you are sensative to comments about your weight or feelings.  Sad but you have to tell some people.

As a heavy kid, I was held down by several people and they spit in my face and called me names that related to my size. I ended up as an adult having to go to counseling to deal with a lot of the issues of my childhood.  Some were weight related issues included verbal and emotional abuse related to weight.  To this day, I can lose weight and I am criticized, If I gain weight I am criticized.  So therefore, I just ignore them until I have to confront them.

Either way, I wish you good luck on your weight loss.

Weight Loss Change of Pace Jul 29 2008
23:12 (UTC)

Ok here's my take on it.  You were losing weight really fast.  Your body fat holds toxins.  You body will only drop so much so fast.  Your body is probably toxic from burning on your fat reserves.  I do think dropping 20lbs a month is ok if it is done with healthy eating and exercise.  I have lost around 25 before and I was 200 and went to 175.  I was eating healthy and exercising.

Try to up your intake of B vitamins such as vitamin b-150 and see if that helps.  You have to be careful when dropping a large amount of body weight.  I would suggest trying to find exercise activities you can do with your son.  I think the bicycle or a jogging stroller may be your best bet.  I used to have a cart that hooked on the back of the bycicle and I pulled my children in it for exercise.  They loved it and it was great exercise for me.  I also used to pull them in the wagon while I walked.  So maybe those are some good options for you, depending on where you live and whatever, they may be useful.

It sounds like you have done some great work so far.  Keep it up.  Even if you are losing slower, remember if you lose too fast it is could be muscle tissue.

10-12 lbs for someone your size is a lot of weight.  I would suggest some cardio and a strict diet.  If you are 105 with a little extra belly, could be you are eating the wrong stuff.  Try eating more protein and less sugar/fat.  Make sure to read labels.  Anyway goodluck.

If you need the calories, use a protein shake or energy bars to supplement.  They are a lot more healthy than the candy bar.  Try Musclemilk...the cookies and creme and bananas and creme are both really good.  They are roughly 300 calories per glass.  Blended with ice they almost taste like ice cream.  I wouldn't starve myself too much...you need enough calories to keep your metabolism up.  1400 for a guy your size is way too little.  It is best to eat small meals too...so maybe eat an energy bar and a shake later. I would not think you need the sugar or fat in a candy bar.  Good luck.

Weight Loss how to order healthy @ restaurants Jul 25 2008
02:44 (UTC)

I would think that most restaurants place nutrition information online.  Usually if a restaurant does not place the information in the customer's view is because they are ashamed of the calories and fat content.  I would suggest doing your research or getting a book that includes restaurants. Also try to get an up-to-date book. Keep the book in your car.  That way you know what you are eating before you put it in your mouth.  I seriously doubt the waiter will care about your calorie count.  I have seen a calorie counter book at a drug store, so I would suggest going there first, but maybe a good bookstore would have something.  Some restaurant's have a lean menu, I would suggest that anyone reading this show their patronage, by ordering from the light menu to let the restaurants know to create a light menu....because we want it.
