Foods Is Gatorade better than soda? Sep 01 2009

Johnny:

I never really drink gatorade, but it really is a helpful beverage when running for long distances. Carbs and sugars aren't always bad, they're what our body uses for energy. I'm not going to chug a glass of milk while running, for obvious reasons. But I do agree that soda is always bad, diet or not.

I realize this post is old, but seriously? If you want to talk about gatorade having chemicals in it...and then suggest crystal light? interesting...

Here are the "chemicals" in gatorade:  water, sugar, salt, carbohydrates, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), a few different kinds of sugars. No, gatorade isn't the best beverage for losing weight, but it is a good way to get energy during an intense workout.

As for diet soda and crystal light, these things do contain some mysterious chemicals and artificial sweeteners. It's best to just drink water, or I like to drink unsweetened iced tea to mix it up.

Health & Support Thyroid - confused? Aug 25 2009

Goodluck. I had stopped getting my period for about 5 months, and my lady doctor had some bloodwork ordered. My TSH was suppressed which could indicate hyperthyroid. I've had my thyroid tested many times before and this was the first time anything abnormal showed up. I think we have similar stats? I'm 5'7" and 115lbs. I went to my family doctor and had further tests (an ultrasound of my thyroid and some more bloodwork) All of that came back normal, and I have no real answers as to why my TSH levels were low, or why I stopped getting my period. I'm slightly underweight but I don't have an eating disorder, I've been this weight since my teens. Let me know what they tell you, if anything.

If you feel like you do, some toning can work, as we discussed - but since you are in recovery for anorexia you need to gain to a BMI of 20 (probably more because you are a fairly muscular young man) before you incorporate exercise.

Is he in recovery from anorexia? I didn't see him mention that...

I've pretty much felt like I don't belong here at all. I think it's awesome that there is a place like calorie count where people can come to discuss their weight problems and become healthier...but this entire forum is consumed by people who are recovering from eating disorders and they pretty much reign supreme. I'd love to get some helpful weight gain exercise dialogue back and forth in this forum for underweight people who don't have an ED to blame. Last summer when I was consistently calorie counting, AND exercising, I definitely had exercise to thank for my larger appetite and overall healthier lifestyle. I dunno, I can only speak for myself, I'm currently gaining and exercising and I can't imagine doing one without the other. It does make it more difficult to gain while burning extra calories doing cardio, but underweight people without EDs should be able to account for those extra burned calories. It's unfair to completely shut out exercise from this forum for those of us who are capable of gaining while exercising. It would be such a great help to me to find other gainers who hit the gym, and how they manage to keep calories up at the same time.

I guess I just wish there would be an ED recovery forum separate from the weight gainers forum...

You guys didn't look skinny at 100lbs because you've probably grown since then. Naturally, as you hit puberty, especially from ages 12-15, you're going to gain weight and look differently than you did before puberty. It's not a good idea to try to reverse what nature is giving you. I'm sure you've gained weight on your hips, thighs, and breasts since when you weighed 100lbs, and maybe you aren't used to that yet or something. I think the best thing for all of you to do is to get off of this site, and just eat regularly and healthy, and start working out. Worrying about calories at ages 13-15 is totally absurd unless you're overweight. And none of you are overweight, most of you aren't even normal weight. Frown

My suspicions began when, in a thread where an unexpectedly pregnant cc'er was asking the do-I-or-do-I-not have an abortion question, and then all of the these folks chimed in with how wrong it is, and just how much she will regret it forever. I was aghast that all these folks who have always been so supportive on other topics could be so judgemental on another.

I hate it when people try to save a baby's life. Those right wing jerks.

Young Calorie Counters should i eat when im hungry when the meal is premature?? Aug 27 2008

The only thing that keeps me full is oatmeal. And i don't even really like feeling full, so i don't eat oatmeal very often. I'd advise you to just eat whenever you're hungry. I'm eating 2500 a day and I'm finding that i get hungrier and hungrier every day, so eating every two hours is usual for me.

I'm assuming you're in high school, so that'll make it hard to eat every two or even every three hours once school starts. Frown So maybe you should try the oatmeal thing! Or find other foods that keep you full.

Young Calorie Counters Wait a minute...and you guys say 1,200 calories isn't enough? Aug 25 2008
05:06 (UTC)

/sigh 13 years old?! When i was 13 i grew like...7 inches taller in 5 months or something. Crazy stuff happens. You shouldn't try to fight how your body is growing and changing. You're going to gain weight as you go through puberty. It's called boobs and hips. Don't ruin your body at such a young age.

Actually, if i had access to this site at your age, i would be scared out of my mind to under eat. There are so many sick and recovering young women on this site, begging you to take their heartache into consideration, and to NOT STARVE YOURSELF DURING SUCH AN IMPORTANT TIME.  Its like...you have to be a full blown idiot to not heed their advice.

I'm sick and tired of everyone acting so naive about starving themselves.

I gained 1.5 inches in my waist in a month of eating 2500 calories a day. I think it's necessary...and a lot of it, especially in the beginning few weeks will just be from being full of food and having a distended stomach.

But i feel a lot better physically and mentally, so a few extra inches is worth that. And you'll probably be the only one to notice it anyway. And it supposedly goes away eventually.

Don't give up! You can totally beat it. Smile

Young Calorie Counters Just wondering.. 1,200 calorie diet? Aug 24 2008

Original Post by jsharshar:

I was just wondering if any teens here are on a 1,200 calorie diet.. and if so what are your stats (hieght, age, weight, workout regime if any, etc.) And how much have you lost in what amount of time?

I am curious as to this, I know msot teens aren't on this kind of plan though. Responses would be appreciated though!

Why are you even asking this?

1. you've had an ED, so you should know better...and if you don't then you certainly aren't recovered.

2. what good is it doing for anyone? all this is going to accomplish is making other teens feel guilty about eating more than 1200...especially if lots of girls post back with "yeah i eat 1000-1400 calories and i lost so much weight, blah blah blah"

this behavior is unhealthy, it shouldn't be discussed or promoted...or whatever you were trying to achieve.

Weight Gain 2300-2400 calories!?!? seriously? please read! Aug 24 2008

I've eaten 2500 a day for about a month now, and i've gained 1.2lbs. So that seems pretty slow. I actually feel like i don't eat very much compared to other people on this site who eat 3000-4000. A month ago, before joining cc, i would have never guessed that people actually could eat that much. I would have never guessed that i could eat 2500, but once you get used to it, it really gets easier. You just need to find foods that you like, that are healthy, and that are high in calories or calorie dense. But i really feel your pain as you just found out how much you need to eat, i was in the same exact position you were. Scary!!! But you can do it!  Good luck with your whole menstruation thing! Wink You aren't gluttonous, i promise. There are many of us in the same boat.

And i'd love to be a part of your support, i'll friend you!

Started week 2 today, i slept over my sister's last night, so we did it together in the morning. It was way more fun to run with someone, and to have a nice change of atmosphere! She is a far more advanced runner, so the whole thing was probably super easy for her, but she didn't make me feel silly or anything so i was glad.

Shanfood- >< i don't even know what to say to that, but that boosts my ego a bit, so thanks! And its probably because i have really long legs.

Congratulations!! That really is good news for all of us trying to gain. Gaining can seem so impossible, it's nice and very inspirational to hear that you've succeeded. I've only been at it for a month or so, and i've gained about 1.2lbs.

Your initial story is similar to mine, i was never diagnosed with an ED either, but i had very poor eating habits and was malnourished and didn't look very pleasant. Even though i haven't gained much weight, the color seems to be returning to my cheeks, and my energy levels are much higher!

Goodluck with everything! It sounds like you really made a positive life change. Smile

I decided to do a weekly mile run to help me gauge my fitness level improving. So on one of my days off each week, i'll run one mile and time myself. Today, the first mile--11 minutes 27 seconds. That shouldn't be hard to improve on for next week. But gah, i remember being able to do a 7minute when i was like...14. Discouraging. Frown

Anyway! I'm still in week 1 and i'm anxious to move on to week 2!!!

I'm snacking on peanuts right now. Planters dry roasted has 170calories per 39 pieces, which sounds like a lot, but it's really just about a small handful. You gotta watch the sodium in those though!

Forgot to mention that i'm also vegetarian! I don't eat a lot of salads, unless i go out to restaurants...but i do eat veggie snacks, like carrots, peppers, tomatoes. I'm trying to eat more fruits, but veggies are more my thing. Unfortunately, none of that stuff has calories(practically).Frown

I've approached my boyfriend about running with me, and he wont! This is so frustrating to me because i cannot understand why he wouldn't want to. He claims he "doesn't have time" to do it...and yet he spends countless hours wasting time playing video games. (he's 21 years old) i guess part of it, he sees me as being naggy, but it really seems silly from my point of view.

My brother and my sister both have SOs that run with them, and it makes me so jealous! This is my rant because your post made me sad. Frown

Fitness is a huge part of my life, and i'd like it to get even bigger honestly. So it's really hard to watch him sit infront of a computer screen all day, while i bust my butt running around like a maniac, all ALONE. Rant.

But i'm happy for you guys, who have boyfriends that are into it! Keep it up, seriously! Lucky ducks.

I'm gaining too. I'm 19, 5'7" at 115lbs. Looking to gain muscle and look healthier. I'm guessing I'll be happy at like, 130lbs. I basically eat all day long, it feels like, to get the high calories i need. I eat 2500 a day, more when i run.

Foods i eat a lot are Ensure Plus--350 calories(some people don't like the taste but i love it. you can get it in the diet and nutrition section of drug stores and food stores), I eat a lot of eggs, and cook most of my food in olive oil. Don't skimp on carbs, and peanut butter is always good. If you're eating or drinking lowfat or nonfat foods, switch to something with higher fat. I switched from skim milk to 2%, and i'm going to try whole milk after this gallon is finished. I also put carnation instant breakfast in my milk a few times a day, which is an extra 130 calories. Full fat yogurts are good too.

It's hard to get used to, but you'll end up craving more and more food once you get into it. Always make sure you eat breakfast! That'll get your appetite started for the rest of the day.

halizabeth--LOL, your post made me laugh. and 25" thighs are wonderful. Smile

bremcclurkin--38" hips are wonderful too. I'm 5'7" with 37" hips and i think they're too small! I wish i had bigger hips! Good luck with modeling! Also, i read you wanted to lose 3.5" off of your hips, not to be discouraging, BUT, i think you'd have to saw off some of your bones to do that. Frown That would probably hurt. My advice is work on exercising and eating right, don't worry about the numbers too much.

*edit* I also must mention that that thigh measurement forum IS THE DEVIL. There were girls my height, with like...18" thighs that were complaining. Mine are 20.5" (AND THEY ARE NOT BIG AT ALL) You are not the only one scratching your head at how those girls can possibly be that tiny.

I don't know about all that, I cook everything in extra virgin olive oil. I've never noticed any foul smelling smoke. I've read countless places that the heat from a frying pan isn't enough to damage any of the nutritional value in olive oil, besides taste wise.
