Weight Loss Low Carb Jun 11 2009

kvalhion -  exactly what I wanted to say!

Before I went on a low-carb diet about 6 years ago I read a lot about good fats vs. bad fats, complex vs. simple carbs, etc.  In 6 months sticking to about 40 carbs or less per day, I lost about 45 pounds and my cholesterol and triglyceride levels both went down significantly, while my HDL (good cholesterol) increased. Once I stopped following a low-carb diet, I ended up gaining weight because I was eating more calories. On a low-carb diet you'll find that you're not hungry, and so don't have to worry about counting calories. Once you stop doing low-carb, though, it's easy to over eat unless you start counting calories.

Now I count calories and stick to about 40/30/30 (carb/protein/fat). I also try to keep most of my carbs to foods that are higher in fiber (whole grain, fruits, beans). That works for me, since I'm not starving (like when I tried low-fat), and I still have plenty of energy to work out. The advantage of counting calories is that I can eat some of the foods that I had to cut out while doing Atkins (starchy vegetables, some fruits, ice cream), and still lose weight. I stay away from processed foods as much as possible and things like white bread, rice, pasta, and sugar. It's taken longer, but I've managed to lose the weight that I regained, and found an eating plan that I think I can stick to for the long term.

Just to reiterate what some of the posters have already said - you just need to find a plan that will work for you for the long term, and not think of it as a "diet".

Kristen was very naive if she ever thought that Ron wouldn't do what he thought was best for Mike to win. He's said it multiple times on the show. Ron knows it's a game, and he's been playing the whole time. I don't like him much, but I can't fault him for that. I'm hoping, though, that he gets sent home next.

I think Tara still has the best chance to win, as long as she can keep losing the weight and stay above the line.

I'm also addicted to my HRM. One of the benefits is that it gives you a more accurate count of how many calories you actually burn during exercise. When I first started using it I was shocked to find that the elliptical trainer calorie count was higher by almost 200 calories in 50 minutes! I'm a numbers person and like to keep track of the calories in versus calories out, and I get a more accurate measure using the HRM.

It's not necessary to have one for working out, but I never go to the gym without mine. I also use it to keep track of my HR, so I can see how exercise has benefited my overall fitness level wrt my recovery HR and resting HR.

I think Tara has the best chance to win the whole thing now that Sione is gone, but she's got a big target on her back!

Laura's flown below the radar most of the show, except the last episode, but I don't think she's lost enough weight to be a real threat to win.

I wouldn't mind seeing Tara win, since she's played the game pretty well on her own and really works to win the challenges. Kristen just seems to go along with whatever Ron says, sort of like what Amy did last season with Heba and Vicky.

I'm not sure who I'm rooting for to win. It's always fun to see Tara beat the guys on the show, though!

I liked the last part of the show when they showed Sione working out with his family in the gym, and helping his sisters. He's been there, so seems he will be a good coach and role model for them.

As far as Ron goes - why doesn't anyone on the show ever mention to him that he has a son at home who could really use his help? He said that to Aubrey (or was it Mandie?) about her father before he voted her off.

In the theme of: .."I can`t believe that was me not so long ago!"

I took my nieces to Cheesecake Factory last weekend to celebrate one of my nieces birthdays. Since it's difficult to find nutritional information for Cheesecake Factory I had to guesstimate and came up with over 1,000 calories for the meal! That was my cheat day for the week, but I enjoyed it.Smile

I used to go out to lunch to places like that all the time, without ever realizing how many calories were in the food they served. Now I bring my lunch to work most days, and when I go out to eat I often look for nutritional information on-line before I go, and try to stick to the low calorie items.

Original Post by pgeorgian:

i think jillian's better at breaking through the emotional barriers.  bob does it occasionally, but i think it's usually accidental for him; jillian's strategic.  she pushes people to physical exhaustion, then breaks them down emotionally, then helps them put themselves back together.  it's like guerilla therapy, and it seems to work (not only that, i think the people she breaks down are usually the ones who win.  remember when she did it to ali vincent?).

and now she's done it to both tara and laura.  is mike next?

I think that's the key. Jillian breaks them down until they confront the issues that have caused them to overeat in the past, and then helps them find a way to deal with their issues. She did the same for Michelle, and once she confronted her issues with her parents, she was successful in winning Biggest Loser Families.

sidd - sounds like you know what you're doing as far as the right way to lose weight. I keep reminding myself that it's for the long term, and supposedly the slower you lose the weight, the easier it is to keep off.  Smile

I'm also 5'7" and when I started CC I weighed 174 pounds.  I was exercising 4 times/wk doing cardio and strength training and managed to lose weight while eating 1800 calories on most days. I've lost weight slowly, but it's coming off, and I'm now down to 148 pounds after seven months.  I agree with the other posters that you might not be getting enough calories.

As I lost weight I lowered my calories to 1600. I've hit a plateau, but I think that's due to being at a weight that I was comfortable with before.

Losing weight this way takes time, but it's worth it. Good luck to you.

I think Jillian had it right when she said that they should see it as an opportunity to work with two different trainers with different styles and to learn from both. Luckily I watched the show on my DVD-R so was able to fast forward through all the weeping and moaning.

Carla gets a little crazy at times, but I'm glad she won the challenge. She also seems to take risks that pay off - like shucking 100 oysters and serving non-alcoholic cocktails.

I have a question about the graph that shows you the trend in weight loss. My Blue line is a perfect match to the green line. Is everyone the same?

The trend line is an average of the last ten weights that you've entered. While my weight may fluctuate by a pound or more from day to day, the trend line usually only fluctuates by several tenths of a pound.
