I'm normally the last person in the world to day 'go have your thyroid checked out.' But.. go have your thyroid checked out.  if you really have 'tried everything' it could be a hormone or some other imbalance that can't be controlled without some sort of medication.

If you haven't tried actually calorie counting yet, do that, and stop eating any and all junk food, even if it's within your daily limit, or its 'just once a week'.  Don't use the vending machines, ever.  Don't buy or drink soda, cut back on coffee, and get any food out of the house that you mindlessly snack on.  Don't eat energy bars, diet bars, or other 'snack food'.

Take a good hard look at what you actually are eating every day and ask yourself if it's something good for you or bad for you.

Good luck.

Weight Gain Belly Bloat Oct 21 2009

If you are actually bloated and gassy, you could be experienceing a food intolarance.  My husband used to be bloated nearly constantly, and since going off wheat, has a flat tummy (much to my supreme jealousy) nearly all the time.  One tiny bit of wheat and 'glorp' bloaty distended belly again.

He's had other issues related to the wheat thing though - pain and other probelms besides, but wheat (and other intolerances) doesn't have to have pain associated with it to be a problem.

I costume for conventions, and something that works, depending on what you're doing, could be a flesh colored (or other colored, see profile photos ; ) )body suit. My goal would be to wear my costume(s) with no body suit, but it does help shape my middle a great deal.

I was on Depo as well for about 4-5 years, and I'd urge you to get off it again fairly soon, as it will eventually cause bone loss.  Most of that is reversed quickly, but my hair started thinning too.  I switched to an IUD (Mirena) and it's been really great ever since :).  My hair is nice and thick again, and the low-hormones of the IUD more or less keep my period from coming back - I haven't had one last more than a day in over a year since getting the IUD.

I gained about 20 lbs my first 2 years of Depo, and was able to reverse it, through diet only (I wasn't exercising much then).  I'm back to around 153 lbs, but I'm having trouble losing 'that last 10' or so.

Are you taking anything for the insomnia? altering your eating habits before bed? I've sometimes found that when I do have insomnia, a 5-htp caplet does the trick.  The couple of times i've taken a sleeping pill, I couldn't sleep, because my brain realized there was something weird going on, trying to make me sleep, if that makes any sense at all.

Best of luck.

(and I just read your post again and realized you said you switched to another BC. I found that pills were just not the best thing in the world for me, and the IUD keeps the hormones only exactly where they're supposed to be)

Fitness Back pain from squats Oct 07 2009

It took me a while to get my form right, but I do low weight, high rep squats with a 5 lb bar and 30 lb of weight, for 3-4 minutes with short breaks.  I did 40 lbs but it knocked one of my knees out of whack and I missed several classes so I'm back down to 30 lbs on the bar.

Line yourself up so you can look at yourself from the side in a mirror, try not going lower than parrallel to the floor and see how that feels, and make sure you're sitting back on your heels, as if you're about to fall over backwards.  I rest my bar below the 'neck nob' as someone else called it, or as the instructor calls it, rest the bar 'on the meaty part of your back' just below the top edge of your shoulders.  If you aren't sitting back, you aren't doing a squat.  If you have back pain, you aren't doing a squat correctly, most likely.

Always look up and tilt your head up while doing squats, keeping your abs and belly tight, and this will help with the stress you put on your back.

Good luck!

Is it hot in here or is it just me? ::fans self:: Cool

Hehe.. nah, the room is probably around 75 degrees, somewhat humid, but not bad.  They have 2 giant fans that get turned on and help keep people cool.

I actually only get really sweaty during the squats, and it runs down the inside of my elbows (not really sure where it starts from) - ::shrug:: If I'm not good and sore the next day I resolve to do better next time.

I'll look into getting my own hrm too, along with those support gloves I keep meaning to pick up 'one of these days' and try to make it sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the responses :)

There is pretty much nothing you can do in a weeks time.  Except have arms so sore you won't be able to lift your champagne, with no visible results.

It takes around six weeks to start seeing results, but you could start doing daily push-ups (normal and wide) and sit-ups for the next wedding you go to.

Stop buying it :)

Seriously.  I've more or less weaned myself off of diet (and I know I've mentioned this in, like, 5 other posts today) and just drank water whenever it was available.  I just stopped buying it, and either drink filtered or bottled water at home or if I'm out at a friends' house, I grab a liter bottle of water at the grocery store on the way over, so I'm not tempted to grab some of their diet.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother.. best wishes.

I have no advice on not binging - I'd say drink water until you're floating, and too full to eat snacks, but I really don't know about these things.

I mostly just wanted to drop a note of support, and hope things turn out well for your mom and she gets better...

I don't smoke, I never have, but what above posters have said about replacing one habit with another - I've heard - is 100% correct.  Go to BJ's or Costco and buy a couple huge boxes of sugar-free gum, and pop one whenever you feel the urge for a cigarette, and/or take a sip of water and carry around a large water bottle.  Drinking a ton of water will also, I think, help clean out your body, and well.. give you urges to get up, walk around, (use bathroom instead of going out to smoke) and go back to work.

And every time you chew gum, think about how much money you're saving by not buying a $4 pack of cigarettes :)

Good Luck!!

Keep in mind, Chrissy, she said year and a half, and most of it in the last six months  the OP could very well just be losing the right amount of weight if she lost 40 in the last six months and 10 over the previous year.

to OP:

I think you're doing fine, but restricting calories futher could run you in to the risk of your body hanging on to every calorie it's taking in.  If you're losing about 2 lbs a week, you're really doing fantastic :).  I'm down to 'that last 10 lbs' and it's really taking forever, but I've found in the last two months that it's really true that getting 8 hours of sleep a night does help.  A Lot.

The closer you get to your goal weight, the harder it will be, but so far, you really are doing a great job, I wouldn't suggest changing a thing until your weight loss starts to slow down - even then, don't cut your calories lower than 1500 while working out (my personal recommendation, others will tell you otherwise)

Best of luck : )

While modern commercial MSG is made with 'starch' and corn is a starch, it is not specifically listed as 'corn' and is not strictly a 'corn product'

Modern commercial MSG is produced by fermentation of starch, sugar beets, sugar cane, or molasses.

While it's true you won't have an MSG allergy, that doesn't mean you can't be sensitive to it, just like you can be sensitive to anything else.

There's a difference between intolerance and allergy.

it's not just 'a salt' and people around the world have reported reactions to it.  Since I more or less gave it up on behalf of my husband, I can't consume it in any amount without getting jittery.

There are studies upon studies upon studies that will say one thing or another, but the fact remains: my husband gets migraines from MSG.  4-8 hours or longer ones, which effectively screw up his entire day or longer.  I've known others who are sensitive to it as well.

"Sugar" is not a chemical.

MSG is something my husband has a severe reaction to in the form of migraines, and we have confirmed it is MSG and nothing else.  As as a result, I make my own broths, find replacemetns for broth, and eat very little that is pre-packaged.

Plus, those noodles don't really have any nutritional value whatsoever.

You need to be happy with yourself.  Do you honestly want to be with someone who WOULD leave you at the drop of a hat because you weren't skinny enough?

Anything you do with your body you need to do for yourself, not him.

650 calories is pretty close to oh,... HALF of what you need on a daily basis.. Your body will go into starvation or conservation mode and hang onto every calorie it gets for dear life.  Literally.  After a short period of time, your system will be compleley shot, and you won't be able to lose weight on such a low calorie count, esepcially if you're as young as you sound.

You should probably be eating more like 1800 calories, maybe less depending on your height.  WIth working out though, you should be getting more than even 1200 calories a day.

Men, unlike women, actually tend to be fairly honest when it comes to those kinds of questions, especially weight.  When I told my husband I was thinking about losing some weight, he said I didnt need to and he loved me the way I am.  I believe him, and still do, but I'm trying to lose that 10 lbs so I can wear a bikini at some point in my life.  However, he does help remind me not to forget to eat - he cares about my well-being, and would rather me be my current weight and energy than skinny and frail, if it came to that (which it won't, but you know)

no one is ever perfect - in size, wieght, height, looks, whatever.  Is he doing anything to keep YOUR love? if you have no doubts about straying yourself, why should you doubt him?  Has he been unfaithful with past girlfriends?

I say it a lot, but you probably aren't eating ENOUGH calories.

Make sure you get your balance of fat/carbs/proteins, and never eat less than 1200 calories ever.  1200 calories is the minimum for a SENDENTARY woman who doesn't do any physical activity at all.

1400 is surely not enough for someone who takes care of horses and walks up to 4 miles (over an hour?) per day.  I've brushed horses myself, I know how much work that is.  You probably ought to aim for more like 1600-1800 calories.  How much did you eat before you started your diet?

I would glady pay 5% more in taxes if it meant everyone in the US could get 2x a year teeth cleanings and free fillings.. (it probalby wouldn't even cost that much, probalby 2% in more taxes).  A dollar of prevention is worth $100 of curative care.  Literally.  If we're the greatest country in the world, we shouldn't have anyone die due to infection of bad teeth.

As it is, there are people afraid to go to the dentist who can even afford it but don't take advantage of their health plans that cover it.  If everyone would go twice a year, on our tax dollars, and take care of their dental health, it would save a lot of money in the long run, far more than it would cost to fix.

Vegetarian Is It Wise to Go On a Fruit and Vegetable Fast? May 06 2009
13:27 (UTC)

You could do a 'no junk food/processesed food' fast.  For a couple of days, eat nothing processesed - no box cereals, just oatmeal, no soda, no juice that has added sugar, no canned soups, no pre-packaged breads or snack bars, just water, fresh juice, fruits, veg, and homemade meals that include your necessary fats and protiens - just make sure you get at least a minimum amount of fat and your recommened amount of calories - you can't process vitamins without some fat, so eating only fruits and vegs alone would be nearly pointless, except for the fiber content.

Part of the problem involves what COSTS more for the restaurant as well.

Fish costs more than hamburger, per pound, and some places use up a 'smoke' board thing that the fish is cooked on to add more flavor.  Shrimp costs more per lb, and everyone knows that pasta and pasta sauce is absolutely dirt friggin' cheap to buy and make.  Olive oil, which is often used in 'healthier' recipes is (can be) expensive.

Believe me, I run into the same problems, especially at Italian joints.  Goddess forbid you want a meat-free dish either, because you usually end up paying full price for the menu item, even when you say 'hold the meat' - like a salad, which is usually the most expensive part.. it's aggravating.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but you cannot target fat loss.  If you're developing some fat in that area, you cannot get rid of that specifically.. some women just have a 'pooch'.  I'm not sure you should try losing any more weight, but getting that area more muscular might help.  I liked yoga because the intructor I worked with for ages focused very much on 'core' mucles and helped give me a more curvy body over all.  after a year of yoga, I actually have something that could be called 'hourglass'.

Do try to drink tons more water, and if you can, give up diet soda altogether.  I did, and am very happy with that choice.  Diet soda is nothing but flavored and colored water with bubbles and added chemicals and caffiene from decaffinated coffee beans.

I make a killer pot roast, if I do say so myself.

The 'secret' is to cut a roast into medium sized cubes, 1.5 inches on a side or so, and sear the snot of them, in batches.  Remove all of the pieces of meat and pour a beer in the bottom, whisk or scrape all the brown bits up with a plastic utensil, add meat back in.  Cook in the oven for an hour at 300 degrees, dump in any chopped veg you like (onion, carrot, garlic, celery, potatoes, lentils), then put bacck in the oven for another 2-3 hours.

Delicious.

I also have a recipe for vegetarian butternut squash chili, made in a crock pot

I wish mom hadn't (and still does) equate happiness with piles of high-sugar, high-fat, high-calorie crap food.  She didn't make good choices for us as kids, because we were allowed to eat whatever we 'liked' which was no fresh fruits or vegs, cans upon cans of chef boy r dee, rice a roni, pop-tarts, crap box mac n' cheese, ramen noodles, fried chicken.. I could go on and on.  My brother almost broke the habit, like i did, but after losing 80 lbs, said 'screw it' and went back.. It's a struggle to explain why I won't eat most of her food when I visit now..

I'm dreadfully afraid mom is going to pass away at 67 ish like her mom did.. She'd rather eat chocolate cake (and be very unhealthy, high BP) than take care of herself in any meaningful way.  I'm still 15 lbs overweight, or more, and she says i'm 'too thin'.
