Fitness Freaked by the rowing machine Nov 19 2008

Hi there...it took me a little while to get used to the rowing machine, but now I like it for warm-ups (about 10 minutes) or cool downs or post-weight cardio.  I think it's a great machine to use when I "don't feel like" exercising...after about 6 minutes it loosens me up and gets me going.

Don't be afraid to sit on it and just play with the screen in front of you.  Should be a button on it that will be "instructions" so to speak.  Just play with the various buttons; or get a trainer to show you the works.  Definitely use the stirrups to keep your feet in place.

I like either rowing 2000 (about 30 minutes) or 5000 (about 45 minutes) meters.  I'll do HIIT for 30 to 60 seconds every few minutes (rowing faster and watch the estimated calories burned per hour go higher). That way it varies the workout and gets your heart pumping.

And unless you are lulled by the smooth rowing action, definitely have your MP3 player!!

Good luck!

Foods Stuck in a workshop next week---what to do? Sep 27 2008
22:40 (UTC)

Hey thank you both!!  I didn't realize that taking a few days "off" from exercising wasn't a bad thing.  I know that when I take one day off, I'm raring to go the next day.  That's good to know...and knowing that I'll be walking whenever.  And thanks for the water reminder!!  I always carry my water bottle and will make sure I drink it to the gills...at least I'll have to *walk* to the potty, right?

Thanks again for your support!  It helps.

Foods pls convince me yoghurt is healthy....... Sep 17 2008

I used to not like the "tangy" taste of yogurt (as mentioned by someone above) but a few months ago tried soy yogurt at my local food co-op.  Loved it, then got concerned with eating too much soy...switched over to Wallaby Australian organic yogurt and it's definitely more creamy and less "tangy".  I love putting in almonds...or even breaking up a Special K bar into it to give crunch.  Because organic yogurt is expensive I only treat myself to one per day and get what's on sale.

(Thanks for the tip re: crushing the cups.  Or better yet...recycle!)

I agree with francellb....it IS a powerful feeling, isn't it?  My happy dance is that I'm the same weight post-vacation as I was the day I left for vacation!  And I'm even happy to be back on my program of calorie-counting and logging........

Have a great day, all!

Does that mean the daily est. calories will decrease too, or do we need to that manually?

Weight Loss 20lbs down- but no one has noticed!! Aug 05 2008

Yes...congrats on your accomplishment!  We should ALL feel proud of any accomplishment we make, yes?

Mfowler1's experience has also been mine as well...and I suspect when I go back to work in a couple of weeks there'll be more comments.  But last Sunday a hefty friend did say:  "Are you losing weight?"  "Hmmm...maybe a little."Wink

I find that my weight loss (27 lbs so far of 40) gives me lots of self confidence and I suspect that shows as well...so as mentioned before, wear a smile, throw your shoulders back and sparkle!!  People will notice that more than anything!

Best wishes to all......

That happened to me too...now I have to work a bit harder to get my hb to 70% or more of resting rate.  For years I've had high heart beat at resting...and now I'm thrilled I've dropped this by 20 or more points.  My doc will be too.  Go health!!

  • After I finish my evening meal, that's IT!  No more food, except water.
  • Planning:  if I know I'm going to be eating more at a particular time (ex: going out to dinner), then I'll plan the rest of my eating day around it.
  • Feeling good about myself as changes become evident..."Hey, is that really my collarbone I feel?"  "Look at my arms...they gots muscles!"
  • I've cut out the lattes...which was surprisingly easy for me; now they're treats.  Saves money too!
  • I agree that reading the boards on this CC site is motivating.

Probably not the best thing for our teeth, but I like to crunch ice.  The gas stations has small or chipped ice as part of their soda machines....and I'm willing to pay for a cup of ice.  It gives me water, makes me full and helps the boredom!

Let us know how you do!

Thanks Mike...your input helps.  I'll try the cardio prior to yoga and see what happens.  Today I did it after yoga...and I was ok with that.  You're right:  "whatever makes your body and soul feel right........"

G'd morning all!  I'm happy to report that even though I went about 300 calories over my daily limit, it still came under burn meter and this morning I weighed the same as yesterday.  Later today I hope to exercise!  I was able to limit self to one small of everything except for a second chicken (uncured) frank cooked on a stick over the coals...gosh it was soooo good! Oh, and a couple extra bites of dark chocolate...the really good kind!  Just one slice of pizza and the second piece was scraping off the toppings.  I had eaten a "king" breakfast prior...so that helped immensely.  Thanks everyone for all your help and support!

Robbie:  That pic of me was from almost two years ago...we were advocating for same sex union recognition in the state of Idaho...a hard state to crack!

Bonton:  oooooh, so sorry about losing your fav glasses!  And I don't touch the pastries at the coffee hour at church...a rule I've made for myself for years.

What's everyone's favorite diet/live-it trick?  Mine is eat absolutely nothing after supper.  And lots of water of course.  Interesting to read of Snow's technique...I'll try that sometime.  Though it would be hard to run after a margarita, I'd think. Tongue out

Enjoying a cool morning.....

Thanks, Bonton and Beth for the salad suggestion...or at least eating before I eat pizza...It's a unique situation where I'm bringing the pizza home!  I'll report on how it goes.

I'm still chuckling at refusing to get weighed at the doc's.  It made the nurse grumpy...she stabbed at my notes and said "Today you get a complete px" but I whined (literally!) and she gave up.  Somehow I felt like a naughty little girl but hey...we have patient rights, right?

This calorie counter is working!  I've dropped 2 pounds since I started four days ago.  It really does help to keep tabs of everything that goes into the mouth.  I made a choco cherry dump cake for my neighbors...and of course I kept a small bowl for myself and a bigger bowl for my hubby. (Really, it was tooooo rich!)  I counted my portion as 300 calories just to allow for anything extra.  That made me watch very, very carefully what I ate the rest of the evening!  And I did an extra walk last night.

Onward and forward!  Wish I was hiking Mt. Whitney!  A goal perhaps?

Will report later........

Best and blest,

Kayle

Thank you Alice!  Yes...my name is Kayle (as in Kayle is a whale in a pail).  I have been taking glucosamine for the past couple of years but it's usually 2 pills at nighttime.  Should I be spreading it out through the day and adding an extra one?

Yes, I think I'll enjoy this forum!  Thanks so much!

And now for a big challenge...tomorrow I HAVE to eat pizza (pity poor me, eh?), but I see a slice of mushroom pizza is about 240 calories.  So perhaps I'll have a slice, then a second "slice" but scraping off and eating the toppings only.  Advice anyone?  And then I'm headed to a girls night out but it'll be chicken franks and watermelon and salad 'round a campfire...the good stuff, eh?

Have a great weekend, all!

Hi there! I'm happy to find this thread...I'm 54 and this is the first summer in YEARS I'm getting fit!  And it feels good.  I've been doing yoga the past three months (I used to hate it, now I love it!) and this summer have been hitting the gym several days a week...which I now enjoy too.  Plus I try to go for long walks (I call them "ambles"...as in "Honey, do you want to go ambling?") a couple times a week.  And I feel SOOOO good!  I've been focusing on getting fit; in another month I'll work with a trainer to start weight training and see if I can get the flab 'round my abdomen down some.

My goal is to climb the climbing wall on my 55th birthday next spring!  Awesome, huh?

I feel great.  Of course my knees and hips feel "sharp" if I overdo, but I've learned to take Tylenol right after the exercise and that generally keeps the pain down.  Ain't gonna let it stop me!

I started my weight loss in early Feb. after I had the stomach flu...and up to a few days ago prior to joining this website had lost some 20 pounds with 20 to go.  Then I hit a plateau and nothing had been happening.  I decided to count calories for fun and was excited to find this website.  It'll keep me more accountable. Already dropped a pound and I'm really motivated.

One thing I *have* learned is that I can plan (I'm in a profession where I get entertained a lot or go out quite a bit)...so when I know I'm going to be eating "big" at night, then I eat light through the day.  I went to a potluck last night and had a glass of wine...and just focused on healthy foods in smaller portions: chix, bean salad,...and did cave in to a small brownie.  I even threw in an extra "100 potluck hidden calories" (sipped on my hubby's beer, took a lick of his cake's frosting, ate one of his chips:) ) and was delighted to see that I stayed within my daily calorie goal.  So again, I'm thrilled to find this site...thank you, thank you!

OK, end of rambling; gotta get ambling!  Best and blest to all!

Kayle

PS:  I get my physicals in January...this past Jan. I refused to get weighed.  Next Jan. I'll be proud to get weighed!!! I suspect that my cholesterol will show a drop too.
