Hi carrot, thanks for your reply.  That would make sense, the only problem is i get free cafeteria food at the place I work.  Therefore if I bring food, I end up eating twice as much, and if I dont bring food, i still overeat.  I think this is where willpower and distraction has to come into play :/

So I think i will try between 4 and 6 lbs, so between 14,000 and 20,000 deficit.  I think i will try for one month and then again for the next month if it works.  I would be good with a goal like this because I get relaly freaked out if i overeat and stop the whole weight loss process for 4 days util I get back on the wagon.  This may help mentally knowing that I have this deficit and I can make it up at any time.  I am really excited about starting in January, Maybe I will make a mini goal for the last week in December to see if I can stick to it.  I will try my first mini goal for the rest of december of a deficit of 700.

Yay January!

Hi Floyd, i do not think you are crazy, I have the same problem.  I am 5'4.5" and 136 and am having a hard time getting the last ten off.  I eat all day long, and always want more.  Its esp hard around that time of the month.  I did find that when I started eating fish (im a vegetarian) I did a LOT better from the increased protein in my diet.  I now try to have some sort of significant protein at two of three meals per day.  Like eggs at breakfast and tuna at lunch, or veggie burger at lunch and salmon at dinner.  hope this helps, and at least you have someone to commiserate with!

Just be sure to stay away from too much drinking while around all that food, your inhibitions may get lowered and then eating will ensue!

Good luck, CC will be here no matter what happens!

Portions work with me too, and realizing that I have my limitations.  I cannot be good at everything.  Therefore I stopped stressing about the fact that i cannot control myself in front of a whole bag of cookies.  Move on from the fact that it is hard for you and deal with the solutions.   You dont have to be good at dealing with large portions, you just have to know what you ARE good at!

Another way I deal with that is I allow myself a treat from the grocery store that comes in a single serving size (its a pudding cup with homemade whipped cream, yummy!) and if I am in front of the cookies, i dont eat them cause I know that what I really would love is my favorite pudding cup.  the good thing about that treat is that I know how many cals is in it (400) I dont allow myself to eat it every day, (onlyl when I REALLY NEED  A TREAT) and I am only allowed to buy one at a time.  Plus its about a cup and a half of goodness, which satisfies my big appetite!

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys, that helps.  I find that the time of the month messes up hard work too.  This is the first month that I have plateaued; I will not get discouraged because at least I know WHY I did (eating maintenance due to my period cravings rather than having a deficit) but I find that I have a harder time maintaining a deficit when it comes to these last ten lbs.  I am going to try and stick around the website a bit more for the next two months and if after that I have still plateaued at the same spot Ill try and be more specific to see if any one else has any other solutions.

Good luck, thanks so much for the insight!

Stellaluna, I am dealing with the same darn issue.  i do so good for a few weeks to a month, and then have a terrible day...then its almost like I have backtracked, and sometimes I feel like I have backtracked the entire way.  Its taking a toll on me mentally.  I am trying to work through that even as I type for today.  Yesterday went in the ****, so I guess I will just have to stay positive and know today is a new day and all the bad work that happened yesterday CAN and WILL be undone.

Gr, good luck to you

Foods Measuring cup? Oct 14 2008

also just so you know most times the serving size will tell you the measurement in cups/tbs or whatever, and also has to give you a weight in ounces or grams.  If you are wondering how much half a bcup weighs you have to refer to the back of the box, because a half cup of potatoes weighs much heavier than a half cup of water....its too different to put a blanket weight on.

Health & Support Forced myself to stop, but... Sep 07 2008
04:03 (UTC)

I used to do the same, and it spiraled way way out of control.  I am much beter now, and calorie count helps me with that. Some things I have learned along the way:

Takes me a good two weeks after quitting that bad habit to get back on track with weight loss, and for my appetite to go back to normal.  My appetite inevitably increased when I was making myself sick, so to quit I had to allow myself a few weeks for my body to get used to normal eating again.

Also, surround yourself wiht your family and other distractions during the times that you woudl normallly do it so that you can prevent yourself from doing it again.

Thirdly, TRUST in the numbers.  calorie count DOES work.  You will lose weight if you keep your deficit between 100-500 per day, NO MORE THAN THAT, and you will maintain if you eat your maintainance calories.  You are a normal person with a healthy body, its a matter of retraining your way of thinking.

Good luck, hope this bit has helped!

Well, I did 18 yesterday morning.  I had about 350 cals before the run in the form of oatmeal with protein powder and flax seed.  I did really well during the run so I think that was a good breakfast.  Then I had lunch with a friend which was good because restaurant foods tend to be a bit higher in the calories, and since I am normally not to hngry after a long run it was a good way to "force the calories"  I had baked tilapia, a salad, and let myself dig into the bread bowl (which I never do anymore :)  Then I was not hungry again until 10pm for dinner, but I had only eaten 1800 calories so instead of going to bed I actually got up and ate dinner....to test the theory that I could have a normal day the following day!  So my defecity was 500 for the day, and it was hard but I ate all that I should, and TODAY....went really really well!  I am not as sore as I normally am, i did not feel tired today, and I had a normal caloric intake!!   The only problem that came of my experiment was that I could not sleep for a few hours becaue I was full, ,but I will just have to eat dinner at a more reasonable hour.  I had been waitin gto get hungry; next time I will just eat when I am not hungry.

Is other people finding that this is working for them?  And also, ducklingerthank, you mention that you have been struggling with a plateau... I am also worried aobut this.  we will both have to see what happens -- I am worried that I am going to plateau too.  Its so counterintuitive to me to be eating if I am not hungry to lose weight!  But it logically makes sense, and today did go better than a lot ofmy post-long run days, so we will have to see.

Thanks guys that helps a lot!  I do find that too, that the hunger comes the next day.  I hate that though, because my defecits look all off if I just follow my hunger, so I have been trying to eat more before and right after the longer runs.  I will just continue to make sure I am getting enough cals and keep my deficit at 500 so as to not screw up my muscles.

Good luck on the marathons!  Mine is Oct 5th, its my second, Im pretty pumped!  Now that the runs are longer I am kind of excited to get back to a normal eating schedule, but it will be easier wtih CC.  The last time I think I overate for 2 weeks after the marathon and gained 5 lbs after the marathon!

I need to keep to 1500 cals per day, as this is only my second week of giving up sweets and doing good with my calorie counting.  My second goal is to eat slower.  The people i eat with at work eat really fast because we have to get back to work, but that just makes me want to eat more.  I have not had any bad sugar things in three days!!!!  SO...

1. eat only 1500 cals per day

2. eat slower

3. work out 5 days this week

Reward -- out with the girls this weekend :)

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I am going to join this group because I tend to binge when I am totally not hungry at all.  Thats what I did today!  I am at my last 10-15lbs to lose and my boyfriend is playing "personal trainer" for me because he says if I do some weights I will tone and utilize the food I eat better.  All I have done in the past for exercising is running; I am currently training for a marathon.  I eat too much though!  This group has inspired me to have a godo week this week, counting all my calories without cheating, and trying not to eat after dinner.  I have that same problem where if I eat a snack after dinner, it just does not stop for some reason.

This is doable!   Is anyone doing the "one free day" a week thing?  I am reading Eat-For-Life and he says that is a healthy way to cut out bad foods most of the time and be able to still eat them some of the time.  I am finding it is helping me stay away from the cookies but have only had one week of this type of eating.  I normally eat really healthy, but have such a sweet tooth!  I have now replaced my typical desserts with oatmeal flavored with protein powder, a power bar, or cottage cheese with yogurt and fresh fruit.  It just sucks because I know in three weeks my period will come and I feel like I will undo all of my hard work.  Does anyone else deal with this?

I have done this before and it has worked, but the lowest weight I have been in the last two years was 131.  I am 5'4" and very active so have muscle that hinders weight loss.   Any advice?  I am a very healthy eater but have problems with portion control!  And also, the week during my period is the hardest to get through!
