Weight Loss Help - I'm a little scared... Sep 14 2008

Update - I talked to one of my best friends who is a nurse. She agreed that it was probably a low blood sugar incident. She recommended eating something small before bed to give your body something to run on during the night if you have been cutting calories.  She's been working on losing 40 pounds too, so she knows my pain!

I could never have guessed how hard it would be to get all my calories in! Before I wouldn't eat often, but I'd have junk like Chick fil A or pizza. Now I don't eat often or much, and it almost feels gluttonous to eat 1600 cals! I usually keep Kashi Trail Mix chewy granola bars, which are packed with almonds and dried fruit, and are an easy 140 calories - need to go back to the store!

Thanks to everyone for your help and replies!

Hi - I've got a few questions:

Does he also enjoy the foods he is buying like cheesecake and ice cream? It may be that he just doesn't want you to impose your choices on his diet. If so, you may be able to find alternatives that work for you but also satisfy him, like fudgicles or pudding pops.

If, on the other hand, he is only buying them because you eat them to test or undermine you, then you might just want to put them in the trash and have an honest talk with him about his motives and support for you. After he sees that you are literally ready to just get rid of them altogether he might find it is better to be supportive than to throw money away like that.

I know first hand how hard it can be to share the house and refrigerator with a non-dieting husband (who is also the cook!) so I really hope you can work it out.

Good luck to you!

Hi - that sounds really well balanced. What is your calorie goal per day and your weight goal?

Girl, it's gotta be something in the moon. I have gone over my calories too - with 2 beers of all things, which I NEVER like. Plus 3 lean cuisines, not to mention cheetos. As the previous posters said, some days are just like that - just don't dwell. Pick back up tomorrow and don't punish yourself for a lapse. In the big picture it is a minor, minor hitch, and nothing to magnify.

I almost always have 2 of the chewy Trail mix granola bars for breakfast - the serving size is perfect for my weight goals, they taste wholesome and not too sweet, and they stay with me for hours. LOVE KAshi!

I swear by Kashi trail mix bars, which are 140 calories with whole almonds, cranberries, raisins etc. You could spread a teaspoon or two of peanut butter on top to meet that 200 calorie goal.

1) chocolate walnut brownie pie (felony on a plate)

2) lemon icebox/meringue

3) warm apple pie with vanilla bean ice cream and a drizzle of caramel

4) any other kind of chocolate meringue pie

5) cherry with whipped cream

Glad I just ate dinner - otherwise I'd be spooning sugar straight into my mouth!

Hi - try making the carrot and coriander soup using 1/2 the amount of carrots and substituting cauliflower for the rest. Cauliflower is a great "stretching" ingredient and is virtually sugar-free (0 on the GI scale). If you like the way it turns out just make a HUGE batch with your carrots and freeze the rest in smaller portions for this fall - you'll really appreciate it when the weather starts to cool.

Thanks all! I am realizing that at 1800 calories I don't have ANY to spare on junk - part of the problem is that I have used 200-300 calories per day polishing off some bad snacks left over from a trip to the beach. I think if I make sure to put all those calories in healthy stuff it will help me feel fuller longer - really, 4 twizzlers aren't worth 150 calories - I'd rather have a kashi trail mix bar.

I appreciate all the suggestions!

Also, one other thought - if you have been walking a lot then some of your weight gain might be muscle, and not fat. Try taking measurements of your waist, hips and thighs to see if they are getting smaller, regardless of what the scale says. A few years ago when I started working out regularly, I gained 8 lbs and lost 2 inches from my waist - go figure!

Hi Nabilah - the good news is that you have plenty of time before your wedding to lose weight. In 4 months you might be able to lose 20-25 lbs with good eating and exercise. So don't panic! I really love the food log here - if you note everything that you have been eating you might really be surprised at how many calories you've been taking in on the "small" stuff. Yesterday alone I had 400 calories extra just from sneaking some Doritos and a few pieces of candy! I am sure you will be absolutely beautiful on your wedding day - just don't give up before you've begun!

Best wishes!
