My grandmother quit cold turkey one day after having eight consecutive heart attacks in one day in the very hospital I work in now.  She smoked a carton of cigarettes a day back then.

It only lasted for about a year, unfortunately.  She went back to them when she didn't see her health improving and figured it hasn't killed her yet, so she'll press her luck.

Wow a carton a day?!!  There are 10 packs of cigarettes in a carton and 20 cigarettes in a pack.  That's 200 cigarettes a day!  I hope that was a typo.  Surprised

I don't refer to myself as a smoker or non-smoker...I'm a habitual quitter!  Ready to quit again.  I find I last longer in the no smoke zone when I go cold turkey.  All I need is 3 days to pretend I have the flu and sleep it off.  Hard part is the pretending I have 3 days.  The patch for me is just another addiction.  I've been smoking and quitting for almost 30 years......dumb.  This time around, when I get back into the no smoke zone I'm staying there for good.  Withdrawal is not fun!

Its common for people to smoke more than 5 packs a day when they have been smoking for so long because they become so hypoxic that the smoke helps them breath... which is why you  cant give a chronic smoker 100% oxygen or they will stop breathing. It be good to figure out her pack years ( the number of packs/day times the number of years smoking). I had a COPD patient who was a 432 packyears smoker and still smokes

As a smoker I find that amazing.  Wow!  Who has that kind of time?  They are smoking constantly obviously without restrictions.  I live in a state that bans indoor smoking in all public buildings, at home I prefer to smoke outdoors.  When I think of all the time I waste taking a smoke break it makes me angry.  Another reason to quit.

I know smokers who have horrible smokers cough and truly believe smoking cures them of their cough.  They hack away at the first puff then after a couple more drags they are fine.  I read somewhere that nicotine paralyzes the cilia (spell?) and that's why they stop coughing.  The cilia is unable to clear the lungs because they are frozen.

Health & Support Skin Cream for Loose Skin?? Nov 10 2008

Exfoliate the area with a looflah (spell?) sponge before bedtime and during or after showering.  Just enough to cause some irritation.  Apply moisturizer containing Vitamins C and/or E.  These vitamins promote collagen growth.  Exfoliating promotes new cell growth as well.  I break open Vitamin E capsules and apply the gel.  And I also apply a vitamin C moisturizer.   I came across this info on the net yesterday so I'm only a day into it.  I'm also taking vitamin C, B-Complex and Cod liver oil internally once a day (you could also include Vitamin E).   From what I've read it can take up to a year for your skin to snap back on it's own.  I'm hoping with a little extra effort, in my case, it snaps back sooner.Laughing

Health & Support Anyone have problems being intimate with your partner? Nov 02 2008

I agree with silentdeadlyrose....you need to tell your husband how your feel.  That's the great thing about intimacy within a marriage it allows for such things to be shared.   I've been having sex with the same man for 29 years (God help me) and I've gone through phases where I was just not in the mood for different reasons.  During my daughters infant/toddler years (I was also doing daycare at home) when my husband approached me physically I just felt like I had nothing left to give.....my response being "I gave at the office".  During those years I also felt unattractive.  I was gaining weight and  just felt like a frumpy old housewife.......I was no longer a part of the grown up world.  I would share these feelings with The Husband and that was his cue to either let me have my space or truly convince me sex was something I would actually enjoy.  Thankfully he convinced me. Wink At this stage of the game my spouse and I have seemed to switch places.  I now give him his space but I won't let it go for too long cause gosh darn it I'm at my peak!  LOL!  So as I look back over the years of my youth.....the only advice that rings loundly in my head is a line from a Janis Joplin song......"Get It While You Can".

Sometimes there's just no figuring things out...you just have to trust and let go.

Hoping things work out for you.

I dice up a peach or nectarine and add 1/2 cup of 2% cottage cheese.  I love this stuff!

I bake a big salmon fillet in the oven at 350 coating the dish w/cooking spray.  When the fillet is done I remove the skin (and bones) and flake with a fork.  I roast 2-3 Jalepeno peppers over the the stove, right on the burner (electric).  I chop the jalepenos (I don't discard the seeds but thats a personal preference) add the juice of 2-3 lemons and chopped green onions.  I store in a tightly sealed container in the fridge.  (The recipe is similiar to the Guamanian chicken recipe Keliquen).  I eat a half cup for lunch and then again for dinner when I'm following my quasi Perricone/Southbeach diet :-).  I lost 4 pounds in the last 6 days.  The lemon juice serves as a preservative.  And the peppers help speed up your metabolism.  Plus when you're in a hurry to eat you won't choose something quick and fattening.  I prefer eating it cold.  Not sure how long fish can be refridgerated but I usually make enough to last 3-4 days.  I've discovered that when I prep most of my foods ahead of time I eat better and avoid the extra calories.

My morning menu....a cup of warm lemon water, hard-boiled egg, 1/2 cup old fashioned oatmeal with 1/2 cup blueberries and just enough milk to cover the bottom of the bowl and then a cup of green tea.  In that order...everyday!  No spikes in my blood sugar and no hunger pangs for at least 3-4 hours.  I've lost 15 pounds in two months...it works for me.
