Sounds like another teenager having fun with y'all. Either that or a monumentally ignorant person. The only advice I'll give you is to please spell the word "lose" correctly. It's not "loose".

The ingredients looked good...smoked turkey, black beans, corn, chipotle sauce...the rub comes from the sauce...they use whole mayo and cream cheese. I should have asked for nutritional info right from the start, but hey, no biggie, I adjusted in the evening and had a very big, very low fat salad...and like magic I lost 1.4 lbs overnight!

Weight Loss My 3 biggest tips on losing weight... Jul 14 2009

I'll go a step futher on point #2 and say too much exercise can actually be detrimental to weight loss. I see so many posts here with people working out 6 to 7 days a week attempting to shed those excess pounds.

The problem is, if you're serioulsy restricting your calories to 1200 to 1500 per day AND doing that much exercise, you could be sabotaging yourself. It's too much stress for your body to handle all at once and it could trigger the dreaded "survival mode" where weight loss is very difficult.

What's great about this site is it reduces weight loss to simple mathematics. Eat less than you burn with a sensible, balanced diet and it's elementary my dear Watson.

Weights and intense cardio EVERY DAY? Bingo. You're overworking your body on a limited calorie diet, which forces it into a protective mode.

Do the weights alone MWF, stop the cardio and I bet you'll lose plenty.

If this is a serious post...getting the feeling a lot of these are people playing.

Fitness Routine Help Jul 10 2009

Hi Elizabeth,

I've got good news and bad news. Good news, forget the treadmill, it's a drag and won't help you replace fat with muscle. Bad news, you need more than 5lb dumbells.

Your best bet, really, is to eat as healthy a diet as you can, trying to stick to the 60/20/20 rule, 60 percent (good) carbs, 20 percent protein and 20 percent (good) fat. Combine that with resistance (weight) training 3 days a week, making sure to rest a day before the next session.

If you can get access to a gym with circuit training machines, that's your best bet. Your goal is to get through your workout in 45 minutes or less and work all the major muscle groups in your body. You want to start out slow, focusing on good form and breathing...and when you're ready, ramp up the intensity so you're only doing a warmup set, and then 6-8 reps on each exercise to muscular failure. The more intensity you bring to your lifting, the muscle you'll grow. But remember, rest is a key, and as you work up to heavier weights, you'll need more rest, so after a couple months, you'll want to rest 2 to 3 days between workouts.

As for cardio, do something you enjoy outside like biking or walking on the beach, but you shouldn't overdo it there, because if you're keeping your calories low say 1200-1500 per day, your body won't be able to handle the extra stress put on by the lifting and cardio combined.

My two cents, hope that helps.

Dan

Weight Loss Ta da da.....! BEER! Jul 09 2009

Maxx86 is obviously a very intelligent person. I agree with her whole-heartedly.

The real and often hidden danger in drinking beer while trying to lose weight is the temptation to eat high fat foods along with it. Would you rather have beer and chicken wings, or beer and a salad.

That said, years ago when I was exercising religiously and watching carefully what I ate, I was able to drink beer and still keep pretty lean.

Alcohol decreases the body's ability to burn fat by as much as 30 percent, actually, with alcohol in your bloodstream, your body prioritizes and starts burning that off, ignoring the fat in the process.

"I was playing around with one of my friends who can be a little rough at times"...

A little rough?? Bruised and/or possibly broken ribs is WAY MORE than a little rough, my dear. You didn't say whether it was a male or female friend...guess it doesn't really matter, because as they say "with friends like that"...

Show your "friend" what they did to you. If they are not immediately horrified and apologetic and do not offer to pay for your medical treatment, stay very far away from this person, who obviously has anger issues towards you.

Fitness Are rest days necessary for free weight exercise routines? Jul 09 2009

Hi cjkl,

What you're doing, basically, is turning your free weight excercises into aerobic exercise. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but don't expect to get stronger or build muscle in the process.

To get the full benefit from weights, you need to be lifting enough so that you can do only 6-8 reps before failure (after a warm-up set), and then rest for at least two days before lifting again. (I'm assuming you do a full body workout)

By sleep patterns, Flogginsully means the amount and quality of sleep you get. Our bodies need sleep to recover from the stress of workouts. If you don't get enough sleep, you'll need longer to recover.

Weight Loss What can I do on my days inbetween gym? Aug 21 2008
23:00 (UTC)

Can I just add my 1.5 cents? Don't know what your ultimate goal is, but if it's weight loss, the two best things you can do (according to lots of research) is limiting calories and weight training. Adding cardio to the mix may actually slow down your progress, because as you stress your body more it reacts by going into a protective mode.

Running long distances or doing the treadmill and such are very inefficient ways of losing fat.

Frankly, I wouldn't work with weights four days a week either. Too much constant stress on the body.. limit your lifting to 2-3 days, and always go to failure on your excercises... one warmup and one all out effort is all you need.

Your body needs time to recover, so take Fido for a relaxing walk and drink lots of ice water.

Ok, maybe that was 3 cents.

Lots of good suggestions there, so I have just general advice. Avoid high protein snacks before bed, as protein is a natural stimulent and may keep you from falling asleep quickly. I've also read that it's best to eat most of your protein during breakfast and lunch and start tapering off at dinner. Slow burning (complex) carbs and fruit sound like the best bet to me.

Another thought.. with all the excercising you're doing, and it seems to me to be a lot.. perhaps you're not eating enough calories, and your body is entering the starvation mode.. ?

Melkor is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! RRReverend!!

You didn't say how long you were doing the total body strength workout, but if it has been more than a few weeks, it's probably time to start lifting more weight, to failure, and limiting your weight lifting to no more than twice a week.

More rest will allow your body to recover and grow more muscle, i.e., get stronger and more muscle will burn fat faster.

Good luck

You've had some good advice from folks here, but beware. Bodybuilding.com is full of good info, but also full +*&%$ at other times. Depends on who you're listening to or reading, especially in the Forum.

I recently read (the late) Mike Mentzer's book "High Intensity Training the Mike Mentzer Way", and after reading tons of material and trying lots of different workouts in the past, I'm absolutely certain his philosophy is the best and most based on true science.

To make any muscle grow, you have to expose it to stress it hasn't handled before, i.e. taking your set to muscular failure. This initiates the General Adaptation Syndrome in your body, which will grow new muscle to be able to handle that amount of stress the next time it comes up.

Where most people go wrong is assuming more is better, that lifting all the time will make you stronger and stronger.. so they work out 4 to 5 days a week doing set after exhausting set.  This is both wrong and counterproductive. The body needs rest to recover its energy stores and grow new muscle. If you don't allow it to do that, you short-circuit the process.

Mike's program is simple to follow, NOT EASY, but short and intense and you will be working out only once every 4 to 7 days, and you will make huge gains in strength and muscle size. You will have to start out slowly, of course, and build up to the intensity that is necessary to make continued progress.

Buy the book, read it and you'll see what I mean. Good luck.

Fitness Am I lifting too hard, too often? Aug 10 2008

No cardio? Looks to me like that's pretty much all you're doing, cardio with weights, that is.

Lifting weights 5 days a week is WAY too much. Sorry dakatz, but resting one day per week will NOT let your body completely recover, not even close.

No, I'm not a professional bodybuilder, but I've read enough to have a pretty good idea of what is true and what isn't. Your routine is too taxing to the system to allow you to keep growing muscle and strength.

If you want to build muscle and get ripped, you must conduct short, intense workouts followed by 4 to 7 days of rest to allow your body to recover and to allow it to grow new muscle.

At the rate you are going, you will reach plateaus on your weight amounts very quickly, if you haven't already. If you don't change the weight you're lifting, your body will adjust to it and then what you have is basically an aerobic routine. But as the intensity of your workouts increase, you must also increase the amount of recovery to keep progressing.

Don't just take my word for it, though. Read the book "High Intensity Training, the Mike Mentzer Way, and it will open your eyes, and give you hours to time to do other things besides lifting weights over and over again five days a week.

I know you may not want to be a bodybuilder, and neither do I. But I want to use my time in the gym efficiently to get stronger and help me keep excess weight off.

Good luck.

Thanks again to all for the tips, advice and encouragement. By the way, the pic I have posted is of my two nutty twin uncles, not me.

By the way, the wife gets away with eating just about anything she wants. Her family is thin, and they stay that way. I'll never forget the first time she made me strawberry shortcake...for DINNER!

My family, totally opposite. We look at cake and turn into blowfish.

She is actually trying to eat more fruits and veggies, so we are making some progress.

Thanks for the advice and support, and I'm not trying to control her, just hoping she eats SOMETHING  before 5pm besides coffee.

And I'm no angel, my friends. I've just come off a stretch where anything and everything was in play, including an entire's day's worth of calories in beer alone...after dinner.  She's not a big drinker, so the big rum drink was no big deal. I was probably just peeved that I couldn't have one since I'm trying to be good at the moment. I'm allowing myself one pint of British Ale tonight.

Still, I wish this site, or other, could put all the elements together. I do admit it has been very educational and usefull in controlling the amount of calories I'm eating, and being aware of them.

Good luck to all

No veggies, correct. But what you didn't see was that her caloric intake, minus the rum drink and chocolate was about 800 calories. I'm trying to convince her she needs to eat more, including more healthy foods. I thought by plugging this in I'd have some backup ammunition.

All I got was blanks.
