shane82 how much FOOD are you consuming?? It doesn't matter how expensive it is, if you're spending that much on raw food (ie, you're not counting restaurants or takeout) that's OBSCENE.

I TOTALLY sympathize-- I LOST 10lbs and couldn't fit into any of my shirts anymore because my back muscles had gotten so big. FRUSTRATING. But, we're healthier and thats what matters most, and I'd be really surprised if your weight kept increasing with all the cardio you do. |

| Fitness | Normal hunger or something more serious? | Oct 07 2008 04:53 (UTC) |

Thanks katieydid2, Keeping snacks with me seems to have helped, but I think I will try to replace more simple carbs with whole grain as well. Do you have any idea why this would have started happening to me all of a sudden though? Mid-June I had about 6 serious episodes in 2 weeks, and since then it doesn't happen if I eat regularly, but I used to be able to eat a big breakfast and be not hungry for 8 hours, and I just can't do that anymore. Btw I'm only 5'2 and trying to lose the last 5 lbs, and on workout days my total calorie expenditure is only about 2000 calories according to the site's meter, so I aim for about 1400 calories knowing I'll underestimate what I eat a little. |

| Fitness | Shoulder Cramps | Oct 07 2008 04:06 (UTC) |

The shoulder cramps are caused by lactic acid buildup, same as stitches in your side. Stretching your arms above your head and breathing deeply should help a little, but it was likely the extra effort of running outside that caused it. |

| Young Calorie Counters | Pretending to be Health-Concious... | Sep 29 2008 17:52 (UTC) |

It's exhausting being around people who are constantly "trying" to lose weight and judge their non-dieting friends for their eating habits-- throughout high school I was always very slim and my best friend was bigger, and self-conscious about it. One night we went out for pancakes and she didn't order and, looking on at ours, said "You guys are going to get fat." Now, I probably didn't handle it the best when I responded "No, I don't get fat", but I definitely sympathize that it's really hard to be friends with people who get so upset about food. |

Ate a Jimmy Dean Breakfast bowl as a splurge, 490 calories... That's still better than if I had cooked a 2-egg bacon-cheese omelet for myself, right? |

| Foods | All this talk about Luna bars... | Sep 15 2008 19:42 (UTC) |

I'm sure that your homemade recipe for granola bars is more economical than buying luna or kashi bars, but I'm certain it's less healthy-- they are probably about the same calorie count as luna bars, and more than kashi, without the protein, fiber and vitamins the store-bought ones have and with and a lot more fat. You get what you pay for. |

I LIVE on Cambell's soup- Italian wedding, beef veggie or classic (not creamy!) tomato with added spinach and cheese. No other way to have a filling under-200 cal meal. |

| Fitness | Starting from Scratch after 3-month "break" | Aug 22 2008 05:49 (UTC) |

I did the same thing when I studied abroad and traveled most weekends and never had access to a gym. I found it easiest to lose the weight by starting with diet and then easing into working out: I pretty much went cold turkey on all junk food ( you think ou could never do that, but go three days with no dessert or fried food and you honestly don't miss it-- seriously I'm a ice cream and alfredo girl but all of a sudden I'm all about bananas and spinach). Then after I lost a few pounds just from dieting I took up pilates and lost another 5, and now it's tennis season and I'm in great shape. The most important thing is to get all desires for high-cal foods out of your system so you don't sabotage yourself, and do activity you actually enjoy (or at least don't get bored with) so you'll keep it up. |

| Weight Loss | Too MUCH Cardio question about weight loss | Aug 08 2008 04:48 (UTC) |

The problem might be that you get such an appetite from cardio that you feel like you're breaking even, but you're really eating as many, if not more, calories than you burn. It happens to me every tennis season-- Over the summer I'm happy on a thousand calories a day when I'm doing pilates and a little jogging, but suddenly after a 2-hour intense practice I just want (and feel like I really need) to consume STEAK and POTATOES... |

| Motivation | Cruel things people say AFTER you lose weight. | Aug 08 2008 04:39 (UTC) |

How do you react when people say "Oh, you've lost weight!" with a tone that implies Thank God, you needed to! I gained a very noticeable 7 pounds while in Europe for four months, and have after 2 months home lost it. Family keep telling me they can tell I've lost weight, but because I never should have gained it in the first place (I've always been pretty thin, and am a little ashamed I let myself go), I don't really know how to respond. Saying I've lost weight just means they noticed that I gained, and I wish we could all pretend I hadn't... |

| Weight Loss | how long does it take to get used to eating less? | Aug 05 2008 05:30 (UTC) |
|
No that's absolutely right, if you plan your diet correctly you don't need to starve-- I can't live without dessert, for example, and I found by replacing a half cup of ice cream with hot fudge with a banana with peanut butter and chocolate I get the same amount of calories but not that empty, crave-y post-sugar feeling that ice cream gives me. Also, replacing lettuce with spinach even makes salads really filling. |

| Weight Loss | Is it possible I'm maintaining on 1200cals a day? Do I need to see my Doctor?... :$ | Aug 05 2008 00:56 (UTC) |

I really, really disagree with the people saying you're not eating enough, which is why you gained weight back when you upped your calories. I'm 5'2 as well and have been very slowly losing weight on about a 1250/day average, but in the past when i've been in the best shape I was down to about 700/day on days when I didn't exercise (considerably more when I did). Larger women might not understand it but it really, really takes very little to fuel a small person. Also, exercise is always what really burns the weight, not just diet: After plateauing I've started losing weight again just by picking up a pilates class twice a week. |

Sitting burns about 60 calories an hour, and it makes no difference whatsoever whether you're watching TV or studying; brains burn the same calories either way. |

Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
