Fitness exercising sick? Mar 19 2009
17:01 (UTC)

boo! i hope you're feeling better soon. i was sick this week too (the first time i've been sick in MONTHS and it has to be finals weeks!) and i know, it sucks!

anyways here's a little article i found.

it basically advocates the so called "neck check". if your symptoms are above the neck (sniffles, sore throat, headache, etc) then go ahead and workout but go easy and if you feel dizzy or faint at any point then STOP. however, if your symptoms are below the neck (fever, coughing, nausea, sore muscles) then you should take the day off.

also if you exercise at a club (it sounds like you don't, but i'll say this anyways) do keep the other exercisers in mind. if you're sneezing and coughing all over the place and touching all the equipment you could very likely get someone sick.

anyways, feel better!

Weight Loss Why am i always hungry?!? arrrgh. Mar 19 2009

are you still eating breakfast? is it that TOTM? maybe your body just needs some time to adjust?

i feel your pain though. i have days, and weeks even, where i am constantly hungry. i think i big part of my problem is not drinking enough water. sometimes when you're just dehydrated you feel hungry, but unless you're chowing on something with a TON of water in it, it doesn't help much with the "hungry" dehydrated feeling. at least, that's how it's been in my case.

anyways, hang in there. we all have off weeks. Smile

I'm 20, not 21+.

and,

345 + 300 + 110 + 420 + 110 + 180 + 70 = 1,535...not 635.

I never said I was good at math. Lol. Plus that required reading more carefully than I was able at that moment... ^_^ Seriously, I suck at math. Mi malo.

I maintain that if you're hunry, eat. You're hungry for a reason, and what you eat today isn't going to sabotage an entire diet. I do it a lot and it hasn't sabotaged me yet.

I concur with samismile on this one. If I force myself not to eat once I've reach my calorie limit I'll just overeat later to compensate. I'm a big overeater (portion distortion, anyone? Wink) and it makes it a lot easier to regulate the amount I eat if I don't ever let myself get really hungry.

The Kashi bars on the other hand, are actually very good for you because each contains 3g of fiber, have no aritifical ingredients, are made from whole grains - It think CC rates them as an A.

I don't know how many calories the Kashi bars are but I recently discovered fiber one's bars I am absolutely in love with them! 150 calories and 9 grams of fiber! And they taste really good (not the cardboard taste I expect from most fiberific food). I had the peanut butter ones (sooo good) and am really excited to try the chocolate ones I just got!

I hate working out...when I'm in the middle of doing so! I'm sweaty, breathing hard, my legs hurt...I could go on for days.

Two things get me through it: my exercise mantra of "no pain no gain". The other is the fact that I know how great I'll feel after I'm done no matter how pooey I feel during my workout.

When those don't work, I bribe mysef with shoes. THAT always does the trick!

here's an article from women's fitness about different exercises to make the most of your body shape:

their advice is pretty much what you'd expect, but you might want to check it out anyways.

i'd like to inquire about you're post about lower reps for legs...do you know how many sets would be ideal?

dovelette, how much vodka is going in those drinks with club soda? the only reason I ask is because if it's any sort of drink that would be served at a bar it has at least one shot (1.5 fluid ounces) of liquor which is closer to 100 calories than 50...

I'll admit I've never had much of a problem with binge eating, but I have moments where all I want to do is eat and eat and eat. It's hard to overcome...I feel your pain.

If I'm in danger of binging the first thing I do is try to distract myself. Put on some music and dance, clean, watch some tv, surf the web, etc. If the urge to binge is really bad I'll just get out of the house and go for a walk or a bike ride.

While the distraction techniques work for me in a pinch, I've realized that if I don't want to binge I need to exercise self-restraint. Easier said than done, I know. But when it comes down to it, no one is going to lose this weight for me. I have to make sound choices, I have to make the sacrifices.

It helps me to remind myself of why I'm doing this, why I want to lose weight. I've found that visual aids work great for me. I make my own thinspiration -- no, not the kind with skeletor models and celebs you find on ana/mia sites (that is NOT attractive in my opinion). I take pictures of myself when I was thinner and where I like how my body looks and assemble a collage of those pictures juxtaposed with some "heavy" pictures to put on my fridge door and cupboard. That way when I go to the fridge or cupboard I am reminded of what I'm working for. Anyways, I've found that it really helps me control those junk food attacks and stick to my diet!

Best of luck to you angelsandghosts.

Motivation darn weekends! Feb 03 2009
19:39 (UTC)

xosugarbabie05ox, drinking is one of my biggest problems on the weekends, too! I'm at university so it's very hard not to drink all the time (I seriously do not understand how so many people I know drink 4-5 times a week and aren't giant!) and especially not to go out drinking with my girlfriends on the weekends, which adds hundreds of calories to my day.  To make matters worse, once I get a little tipsy all inhibition (well food related that is, Wink) goes out the window and I eat like a madman pushing me into a serious calorie surplus. It feels pretty crappy to wake up the morning after a drunken Taco Bell binge. Bleh. I really shouldn't drink as much, but eh, easier said than done.

Well thank you everyone who posted! It's encouraging to know that other people struggle with the same problem and, unlike me so far, have been able to handle it successfully. Smile

hi kmdrysdale, and welcome!

staying motivated to work out is hard...especially when you're tired! i try to work in exercise into my daily routine (biking to work, taking the stairs, going for a walk after lunch). it may not seem like a lot but it sure does add up.

when i'm really unmotivated i look at my thinspiration....and no not pro ana/mia type thinspiration (i don't want to be a skelator after all).  i find the best kind is pictures of me when i was at my goal weight/looking and feeling my best. even when i don't feel like working out, having a visual reminder of WHY i'm doing this using helps perk me up.

good luck on your weight loss!

truthfully i try to stay out of the dining halls as much as possible. i find the bad food too tempting and tend to overeat when i go. if i do go to the DH i pretty much always get a to-go meal and make a salad to go eat in the quad.

it is hard to do the 5 meals a day thing with all the time commitments. and living off campus makes it that much harder! i usually try to eat a substantial breakfast and bring lots of snacks up to campus for the day and then wrap up with a pretty hefty dinner when i get home.

okay, first off you've got a lovely figure (jeez i sound like my mother).

second, have you tried pilates? it will do WONDERS for your abs, especially your lower abs. i took a pilates class at school and my belly was pretty freakin flat...i gained some weight, have now lost it again but have not been doing pilates and my belly is waaaaay bigger even though i'm the same weight.

these are some great suggestions...

perhaps eating more meals throughout the day might help him keep from getting so ravenous. also, when i talked to a nutrionist at my school she turned me onto what she called "smart snacking". the basic idea is to mix in protein into snacks. example she gave me: you're hungry, you eat an apple, you're fine...for about an hour and then you're hungry again! but if you eat the apple with some peanut butter you'll stay fuller for longer.

and i know someone already suggested it, but i can't stress the greatness that is FIBER! i switched from white bread to orowheat's double fiber bread for sandwiches and i noticed right away that i was fuller for much longer.

the teethbrushing tip is a great one...i also eat ice if i'm feeling snacky (but not hungry) although i know it's bad for my teeth.

jeez some people have no boundaries!

my mother is always trying to get me off my diet. she's always telling me "oh you're perfect the way you are, i don't think you should lose an ounce". (of course she has to say that -- she's my momma!) some people just don't understand that i'm doing this is not because i think i'm fat or overweight, but because i want to like my shape! and getting rid of the buddha belly would be a plus, lol!

oh boy do i feel your pain on this one! being in college is not the best environment for limiting alcohol calories, if you know what i mean. here's what i do to try to limit that damage:

only drink a couple times a week,

STAY AWAY FROM COCKTAILS!!!! there are so many hidden calories in so many cocktails. i would recommend mixing with diet soda or soda water with lime. there are also light fruit juices. i loooove cosmos...i nearly died from joy when i found light cranberry juice at the grocery store!

work it into your diet. if i know i'm going to be drinking i make sure to factor it and eat less during the day. you shouldn't do this all the time, but for a special night out i think it's okay!

oh gosh a pull-up? i don't think i've EVER been able to do one of those, lol!

well welcome back to CC. i feel your pain about finding time and the discipline to work out regularly. between school and work it's really hard to find time everyday to get to the gym.

what has really worked for me is working exercise into my schedule, not just allocating an hour for the gym. i've started biking to work which burns almost 400 calories round trip alone and takes about as long as my commute by car! it's important for me also to remember that every little bit counts. i think a lot of people feel like exercise and dieting is all or nothing. doing little things like taking the stairs, going for short walks, trading soda for water -- it all adds up in the end!

well, good luck with your weight loss!

Fish cooks pretty dang fast (depending on what method you use). When I broil my salmon it usually only takes 10-15 minutes depending on the thickness.

I love to make a little rub with light olive oil, lemon juice, fresh ground black pepper, and garlic (powder or fresh).

Italian dressing is a great idea though! I'll have to try it next time I have salmon. I'm so sad that they canceled the salmon season in Cali. Cry No fresh wild salmon!

i've started biking to work instead of driving....interestingly enough it takes about as long for me to bike from my house to work as it does to drive, park, and walk the 6-7 blocks to work!!

cutting out alcohol was a big thing for me. just switching from full calorie beer to light beer cuts out a lot of calories!

one thing i do that really helps me not overeat is to have stay hydrated. i always make sure to have a BIG glass of water before every meal, too. i fill up faster and don't eat as much!
