yes ive kind of done the same(partly because i have trouble sticking to programs for very long, i have a pretty short attention span lol) but i like the way you've set some guidelines-no seconds, eat something small every 3 hrs, etc) ill try that just to give myself some structure.
ive been losing nonetheless as my clothes are looser, so something's working :) |

Can the sugar craving be beaten? Should I try? |
Oct 22 2008 15:10 (UTC) |
11 |
IN my experience kicking sugar is just like beating any other addictive food habit(like caffeine), so it all depends on which method you want to use. cold turkey, gradual, whatever it takes; if you feel it's necessary for your health and peace of mind find ur method of choice. Mind over matter as they say.
As for actual tips: i try to have naturally sweetened, healthier alternatives to old favourites(like oatmeal cookies sweetened with bananas and agave nectar) or just plain sweet grapes, and i use a LOT of will power to focus on their sweetness so I get used to it and not the brownie :)
it may or may not work for you, hopefully something does :) Good luck!(although luck has nothing to do with it) |

stevia shouldn't be grouped with the above mentioned, it is an herbal sweetener made from a plant. usually combined with rice maltodextrin to bulk it up. low glycemic index and delicious!
side note*: try agave nectar it's really good |

Mind over matter to get thin.... |

I wouldn't necessary develop a hate towards "less healthier" choices, but I would convince myself that healthier choices are better-for example, picturing spinach or whatever going in to my body, my body digesting it hungrily and all the nutrients and oxygen rushing out to my veins and organs-LOL ok that sounds weird, but it may help
side note*: mind over matter is a scientifically proven theory(quantum physics) and yes it does work because the mind doesn't know the difference between what is reality and false. Google videos "what the bleep do we know?" movie. awesome! |

i find if i eat a lot of simple carbs for breakfast i feel hungrier a lot sooner and will tend to eat more. try healthy proteins like low fat cheese, cottage cheese, egg whites, whole wheat/grain products, and some fruit.

HI everyone! happy hump day! man this week is just zipping by...:)
I just need some clarification as i'm fairly new to the site, and this group is nice and small so it makes chatting more comprehensible.
CC tells me that I burn 2100 on an average day, with light exercise. it tells me to eat 1350 to lose 1.5 lbs a week.
in the initial analysis i put only light activity because other than exercising at the gym im pretty sedentary.
so the question is: should i adjust the calories on days that i DO work out? for example, stick to 1350 daily, but if I work out(maybe 30-40 mins moderate cardio + 30-40 mins weights) should I add calories? and how many? I'd really appreciate your input :) and can't wait till Friday! |

How Do You Fight the Sugar Cravings? |
Sep 17 2008 16:58 (UTC) |
1 |
Original Post by gi-jane:
The best method I've ever come across is to follow a Low GI diet. That means one without added sugars but also without the refined carbohydrates and simple starches that turn to sugar in the bloodstream very quickly. Instead.... eat more vegetables, complex carbohydrates, wholegrains, pulses/legumes, lean meat, fish, dairy and fruit... Don't substitute with artifically sweetened foods because that's just propping up your sweet tooth.
All the above is quite tough for someone with high sugar tolerance (!) so the advice is don't cut calories at the same time. Because getting hungry will lead to sugar cravings aim to have a meal or a snack every 2 or 3 hours.
It takes about 2 or 3 weeks to get your tastebuds back to normal and for the cravings to die down.... As this happens, then start to reduce the calories.
You'll slip up from time to time but if you can go 2 days without sugar, then 3, then 5 between slips you'll see the benefit long-term. Best of luck
as a sugar addict myself I think this is the best advice I've ever read so far! i'm determined to try this, but just to clarify-this also means cutting out "white" flour and rice products?

I kind of do something and it makes me feel absolutely crazy..so I wanted to know if anyone else does this.
Ok, so I've read a lot about how good Naturally More Peanut Butter is for you and stuff, because it has egg whites, flax seed, etc. yeah well, I never saw anyone say it has cane sugar and honey in it and I didn't check the label before I bought 4 jars!!!!
Now, don't get me wrong, this stuff is DELICIOUS! However, I have worked so hard to remove all added sugars and artificial sweeteners from my diet..and now just the thought of eating those jars is nagging me. I'm thinking about going and returning them and using that money to buy some all natural, one-ingredient peanut butter. Most people would say just eat them and know that for the future, and don't buy it again, and that amount of sugar won't make much of a difference. But it's like I can't keep eating them..I've worked so hard to get rid of that stuff!
I have also returned some bagels when I got home and realized they were made with wheat flour and not 100% WHOLE wheat flour!
Anyone else done this/do this? Or am I seriously crazy haha
generally if you believe in something(a faith, or not eating processed foods or added sugars, or whatever) then stick to it and NO you're not crazy

Original Post by littlemalynda:
Ok so I'm standing in line to buy groceries at my market. I see the same lady evertime I'm in there... we always say hi, and she looks at my handcart, and I look at her cart-cart. (mind you she could have had all this in a hand cart too)
My handcart: bag of lentils, azumaya lite tofu, litehouse tofu pups, 2 18-count egg cartons, 2 pure protein bars, 2 boxes of Gorton's Frame Grilled Tilapia.
Her cart-cart: 1 big container of Dreyer's ice cream, a big jug of mango juice, Hawaiian Sweet Rolls, a slice of Chocolate Cake from the bakery, 1 package of Chips Ahoy Cookies, 2 microwaveable meals by Hungry Man.
Me: 5ft 4, 137lbs, 24 years old, in shape, diet, wearing my yoga clothes, take good care of myself, cheerful disposition.
Her: 6ft, roughly 300lbs, a little greasy looking (poor skin quality), looks like she has problems walking, possibly has gout in her feet (wearing open sandals, very puffy looking feet; also poorly maintained), wearing lotsa stretchy-type clothing (baggy over-sized t-shirt, and a mismatched pair of stretch pants). Roughly about 35 years old.
I was so close this time to just talking to her... I get concerned. She'll be dead before 60. You can just see the health problems by looking at her. Then when I get in my car, and I see her have to "back into" her car and plop into the seat. It was so sad, I feel guilty not talking to her. I know I'm not the best at diet/fitness but I've come so far, and I know so much... I just feel like it's my duty to help people who obviously have serious eating problems.
BUT here's the thing: is it morale? Should I step to her, cautiously, and say "Hi, I see you in the store all the time... you know I noticed you have poor circulation in your feet and legs and I know a couple of ways to help alleviate that if you ever wanted some help... for free of course; I work out at Gold's gym right over here and I cook and bake a lot and I would love to teach you some methods to kinda help you with that..."
I plan on continuing going to the market, and I like seeing the people I always see there... I am genuinly concerned... Should I say something? I battle with this everyday with people I know who are obese (co-workers, friends, and then the "strangers" locally I see often)
What would you do? Do you ever have this????
if you're seriously concerned for her well being then just befriend her, get to know her, gain her friendship and confidence and then little by little the changes will happen by your influence and honest want to help :)

OK! so i am a vegan, and recently went out for a whole week and gained alot of weight just from drinking alot each night and in return eating alot the next day! My question is if i only eat vegtables, like carrots with hummus, edamame, baby boc choi, mushrooms, celery etc...will i loose weight by doing this, im not eating a ton either...600 calories at the most but i am completely cutting out breads, starch and sugar...any advice or opinions?/
my uneducated guess would be that you'd lose weight but mostly water and muscle mass???
my moral vegan friend eats tofu and soy nuts as a protein substitute, as well as various beans. i don't think our bodies were meant to survive on veggies alone, as wonderful and colourful as they are :) |

Toes go numb while on Eliptical? |

Original Post by plumtree13:
Hi ladies and gents out there, so just a curious fitness equipment question here.
I usually run on the treadmill but then one day I started on the eliptical to just kinda mix it up and about 17-24 minutes into it my TOES are NUMB! Now when I'm on it, I just have to suck it up and take the discomfort (I switch from running and eliptical on a variable depending on week).
Has this happened to anybody else out there or am I just doing the Eliptical trainer terrribly wrong? I definitly am trying to bend my knees and not locking them as some friends have asked me. Another friend of mine said its because I'm not taking it in a longer stride but what the HECK does that mean? It's an eliptical, there's only so far it allows you to 'stride' since its fixed.
This is the only time something weird happens when I work out. I don't have this problem at all while running for long periods of time....so whats your opinion? Is there a possibility I might be doing it wrong?
OH MY GOD I thought I was the only one! lol
I just try my best to make sure my weight is on my heels, and if they're still tingly then just find any way to wiggle them till they're "awake" |

do YOU drink any of your calories? |

Original Post by aeroplanexc:
it's funny, ever since i started my weight loss journey, i cut out all beverages with calories in them; milk, juice, gatorade, etc. it worked; i lost over 50 pounds. obviously that wasn't my only cutback, i counted all my calories as well. But the other day, after my shift at work (starbucks), i decided to order an iced soy latte. it kept me full for hours! i don't know if it was the volume or the protein, but it was very satisfying.
so; do YOU drink your calories, or do you stick to water?
I stick to water usually because it's the best liquid you could give your body, but I also drink XS energy drink which is 0 carb 0 sugar and damn tasty!
also, Tim Horton's is the rave over here (In canada) so a small iced cappuccino made with milk instead of cream is 150 calories if you're out with friends or whatever.
occasionally i'll make a shake with soy protein and 2% milk or soy and fruit if i'm rushing out and i need a small meal.
as for calcium intake, I take a supplement so that helps me along if I forget about the milk or dairy. |

does it make a difference if you "lightly" freeze it or if you completely freeze it? The reason I ask, is in this hot weather, I'd love to have the occational popsicle, but I don't want to make them out of juice or buy the high-suger ones. I've been thinking of freezing fruit and yogurt in popsicle trays.....has anyone tried this? Did they turn out well?
Edit: The other reason I'm thinking of doing this is I have a container of yogurt that is just past it's expiry date. It seems like it's still fine, but I don't want it to sit for too many more days. I'm assuming if I freeze it, it'll keep, right?
i don't know about the cultures or anything like that, but i've made homemade yogurt-sicles-yumm-O!
also, my vegan friend suggested blending in some soft(flavoured or non-flavoured) tofu to make a creamier texture
i love the PB idea! |

You're absolutely right: Nothing should be shot down. All ideas are worth a listen. My concern, I suppose, is just that people may get discouraged if they try to spot reduce and do not see the results for which they were hoping. It is very common for people to have areas of the body that stubbornly resist fat reduction. The key is just to persevere. If you concentrate on eating right and getting fit—which means incorporating not only cardio but also weight/resistance training into your life—eventually you should have the breakthrough you were seeking.
I agree, all activities should be attempted to achieve desireable results; you're right, it should be a healthy balance.
and as a side complaint(cuz it's monday)-why can't losing weight taste as delicious as the cheesecake that made me gain in the first place? lol |

FDA to blame for weight gain in America? |
Aug 11 2008 21:45 (UTC) |
11 |
Original Post by petite_powerhouse:
To be honest, I don't think the majority of people pay any attention to the 2,000/2,500 recommendations. They eat when they want and what they want and pretty much ignore (or are ignorant of) calories.
Many people don't realize drinks have calories. Many don't even grasp that cream and sugar added to coffee, and even ice cream added to it at Baskin-Robbins, makes it caloric. (That one is really hard to swallow, but has been shown again and again to be true.) That or they choose to pretend they don't know it. They also don't understand that many dressings can make a salad worse for you than a Big Mac. And they don't realize that they are eating foods that don't keep them full for any length of time despite the huge amount of calories they are ingesting. Not only that, but they eat sugar-laden foods that can trigger cravings for more sugar. And there always seems to be room in the tummy for sugar, nay? So for these reasons they eat again and again and again throughout the day, and the foods they eat are loaded with calories.
They also eat off the dollar menu because it is cheap. And super-sizing is cheap, too, so they do that as well, without considering just how much food they are preparing to eat.
I could go on and on.... But you get the picture.
It is these kinds of things that (medical conditions aside) make America overweight.
As far as the FDA goes, I think the recommendations are realistic. At 5' 3 1/2" and 109 lbs. I'm eating 3,000 to 3,500 calories to maintain. If I were less muscular and worked out more like the average active person, I could eat 2,000 and maintain quite easily.
Of course, the guidelines are an average. But on the average, I think they work. Exercise and eating right are the keys.
all excellent points. i can remember tons of times conveniently "forgetting" about the added salad dressing or cream and sugar. that can be quite dangerous if you eat a lot of salad and drink a lot of coffee! |

Wow! Two whole people! And a "natural remedy" doctor to boot.... And of course there's no other explanation for why that worked than spot reduction....
I went from 129 to 109. I lost almost all the weight from my waist, hips and thighs—and I worked out my entire body. I remained a 32C/XS on top, but went from a size 4 to a 0/00 on the bottom.
Granted, I'm only one person: I can't compete with your study of two....
People's bodies determine how they will lose (and gain) weight. Some lose more easily by far from their upper bodies, some lose from their extremities, etc. These women lost like I did. Hiding under my small pear was an hourglass—because I happen to both gain weight the easiest on, and lose it the easiest from, my lower half.
These women changed their diets and they danced—an exercise that involves the entire body, not just the legs, just as I lifted weights and did cardio exercises that involved my entire body. In the end they lost the majority of the weight from below because that was their genetic lot.
well ive known many women who have taken up belly dancing to lose weight and have gained much tinier waists than they had ever had before because of the types of movements involved-but in the end whatever works for one or TWO people is fine and dandy, as long as we find our own ways to losing weight and inches, and encourage others to do the same without presenting ourselves as the be all and end all experts of one topic. it's not necessary nor is it helpful to discard and discredit one idea as that one idea MAY be helpful to someone else :) |

spot reduction is tricky but not impossible. overall weight reduction will happen but you can make extra efforts to reduce the middle parts.
Spot reduction is not possible: the body loses fat wherever it chooses to. Toning so that you look better when the fat is gone, however, is very possible.
spot reduction has been studied and has been proven effective but not the only way to lose weight. ive lost inches in my stomach from doing the above exercises. of course ive lost unwanted inches in other areas(chest for example) but that just comes with weight loss unfortunately. J
You lost inches in your stomach because your body decided to lose inches there—along with elsewhere, as you said. And because you targeted that area with exercise, it looked better when the weight came off.
Dr. chet Zelasko, natural remedy doctor and healtha dvisor from Michigan:
Weight-Loss Wonders: Spot Reduction Dr. Chet Zelasko | July 28, 2008
If there’s one topic that people really wonder about, it’s spot
reduction: can you lose weight from a specific area of the body? The
research as well as the prevailing thought is that you can’t. But when
you examine the way that the research was done, I think it could be
said that it wasn’t the right way to do the study. Researchers put
volunteers on resistance programs that targeted specific muscles such
as thighs or abdominals. The programs did build strength and muscle but
did not result in reduction of fat in the target area. I believe that
the exercise program should have been more aerobic in nature--that
means doing thousands of crunches and leg lifts over the course of a
day, not three sets of 10. The problem is simple: who has the time to
do that kind of study? And who would want to be a subject?
However, there’s an approach that I’ve seen work twice in my career. My
observation is that people lose weight proportionately--that means
equally from everywhere. But I’ve observed two women who lost weight by
dancing regularly for a year while changing their diets; I estimate
they danced an hour or more most days of the week. Both had carried
proportionally more fat in their hips and thighs, and they both lost a
lot more weight from their hips and thighs than from the rest of their
body--surprisingly more. In other words, they spot reduced.
To make a blanket statement that spot reduction doesn’t work would be
wrong. It really comes down to this: do you have the time to make it
work? |
