Weight Loss Every other day fasting (EODF) - the restriction diet with PROVEN benefits. Oct 14 2009

While I'm not the biggest fan of Siciano31's idea, I feel I need to rise to his defense.

1.  He is not promoting any type of product and has nothing to sell - he is simply conveying and idea.

2.  One element of this concept does make sense - and that is the concept of giving the digestive system "a break" - I know this is kind of a "Fit for Life" idea, but constantly overeating leads to a buildup of digestive material in the stomach and intestines, which leads to all sorts of problems.

3.  I realize that eating 1500 - 1800 calories in a way is "giving the digestive system a break" - in that you never really overeat to begin with.

4.  For me, the upshot of Sicilano's post is that having a "way lower" calorie day could be beneficial - and I would tend to accept this as a general premise, even if I wouldn't accept that going super-low cal (say, 500 calories) every other day would be beneficial.

Thanks for the post Siciliano - I enjoyed reading it.

Weight Loss Reintroducing Semi Skimmed milk contributing to Weight Gain? Oct 14 2009
15:09 (UTC)

3/4 of a cup of skim milk is certainly not a lot - but with some people (like me!) milk products can cause some bloating and water retention, especially if you take it day after day - why not try cutting the milk for just a few days and see if you don't lose some of what may be just a bit of excess water weight?

7 pounds in just a week or two seems like too much to gain without some factor like pregnancy (easily ruled out) or bloating.

I'm really not liking what I'm hear from your essay.  With all due sympathies for the passing of his mom, you don't need to step in a become a "mom-substitute".

He sounds extremely irresponsible to me - I don't see why you would want to take that on.  He should be a leader or at least a "co-leader" in the relationship.

I come down on the side of Best Buy.  If someone doesn't show, a company will find other ways to get the job done.  He can't be their "go-to" guy.  It sounds to me like he's not your "go-to" guy, either.

Weight Loss The electronic weighing scales....... Sep 21 2009

I bought a weighting scale at William Sonoma - it cost about $50.00.  I use it almost every day - it's the greatest - I'm getting pretty good at estimating, but I almost always underestimate the weight.

I think it's key if you are really trying to stay at say, 1500 calories.

I saw candy corn at the lunch checkout - about 5 ounces worth and bought it as an impulse buy, thinking I could control myself.

I could not!  I gave an ounce or 2 to a co-worker, they gave some back and I at all the rest.

;-(

Felt horrible all day and the next, and gained about 2 pounds of water weight!

Weight Loss When to log weight? Sep 01 2009
17:01 (UTC)

I weight every morning and I log it - I think it's instructive to see that what you eat several days before has an almost immediate impact on your weight.

For instance if you go to a Mexican restaurant and have chips and salsa - it won't be a big surprise if you weight 2 -3 pounds more.  Be careful, avoid too much salt, and eat plenty of vegatables?  You'll be on an immediate downtrend.

It has both an immediate and a cumulative effect and you can see this with your logged weight.

Health & Support Pot Bellies?! Aug 04 2009
23:08 (UTC)

You might think about what is euphemistically referred to as "digestive material" - this can cause a distended belly, even if you are not "flabby."

Being careful with what you eat, the order in which you eat (food combining) and supplementing fiber can all help with this.  Also, I think colonics helps, but you might not find a lot of agreement here on that.

Health & Support psyllium ispaghula? Jul 20 2009
17:14 (UTC)

I use a psyllium from Whole Foods every so often - If you look at the actual fiber content, it's not that high, but I think it's healthy and keeps things moving along!

If you're constipated, I'd avoid cheeses, processed foods, dairy, etc.  High vegatable content (especially raw) plenty of water and reasonable psyllium supplementation will really help -

There are some OTC and prescription medications that really cause constipation - check your labels to make sure you know what they do.

By the way, too much psyllium will be detrimental - I usually take a teaspoon, not a tablespoon.

A guy's perspective -

I recall commenting on a co-worker's wearing a skirt, but it was not because she lost weight, but because she had worn pantsuits for the previous year!

Any change attracts attention - some people are a bit less sensitive with their comments than others I know - but sometimes and compliment is really just that, a compliment.

I do - every AM at the same time - then I log it sometime during the day - I think it clearly shows what causes ups and downs (read:  sodium and mexican restaurants).

It's just part of my morning routine, take about 4 seconds - why not?

What everybody above said is true, but I'd recommend you increase your protein intake also.

You have a great diet, but I didn't see any protein except the dairy.

You're blessed that you can "grow" muscle and don't have to loose pounds and pounds of fat!

Weight Loss After doing a complete lifestyle overhaul, can your body be in shock and not lose weight? Jun 16 2009

Milk Thistle is an herbal supplement that is thought to support liver function - I think there is zero risk in taking it  - if you look it up in google you'll see what its beneficial effects are reputed to be.

I think a bottle costs about $5.00 at most places that sell supplements.

You know, red -

it really hasn't been that long - I think you'll start to see big results in July if you stick with your program - I think your body, liver, everything has a lot to do to "clean out" nicotine and alcohol.

Your activity level may be making you consume more calories than you really need - I'd really watch the calories using the calories count tools on this site for at least a month or so.

Your question that your body might be "in shock" may not be far from the truth - I think a lot of "detox" stuff is a bunch of bull - but in your case it might be the truth - of course removing the toxin is the most important first step, but it's only been 3 - 4 weeks since Memorial Day -

Keep it up! - you're on a huge upswing in your health and the way you feel!

Oh, you might want to try Milk Thistle to support your liver while you're recouping from alcohol - it's inexpensive and you can get at any vitamin, GNC, Whole Foods, etc.

Weight Loss Tips and Tricks to beat the bloat! Jun 16 2009

These are good tips - when I have had an "excess sodium" experience (chips, almost any soup, almost any processed food, or smoked salmon (love it!) - it takes all of 3 full days to recover from the 2 -3 pounds extra.

Also, as far as cravings, sometimes I crave sodium more than sugar.  I try to not get too "far behind" on sodium, and try to have a very moderate salt addition at least once a day.

Weight Loss Starting the change of a lifetime. Apr 20 2009
16:30 (UTC)

I've taken the approach of "adding in" healthy foods to "crowd out" less healthy foods (and I did go to Wendy's last week, too!).

For instance at work, I'll take a heart of Romaine Lettuce, and heat 1/2 of it with oil and vinegar - you'd be surprised how that fills you up.  Then, maybe have 1/2 a chicken breast 30 minutes later.

Of course, eating out is what I dislike most - very salty and fatty, even at "nice" restaurants and poorly combined, too (I believe food combining works).

I think if you're aggressive about eating healthy bulky foods, you'll not crave highly concentrated fatty, salty foods, like Wendy's cheeseburgers/fries!

Weight Loss 1st Day of Dieting!!! Apr 10 2009
17:09 (UTC)

I understand what you are saying about being "health obsessed" - I've been on CC since August 1 08 and I log my weight daily.  After going from 175 to 160 from August to November, I've hit a plateau.  I'm happy at 160, but would like to get down into the "middle" of the BMI "normal" index.  I'm in the very upper range of normal now.

I think this is appropriate for me since I'm kind of a small-framed person and was quite "light" during college and as a younger adult.

I think it takes CONSTANT work and attention, so obsession is almost what you need.  Every time I slip and eat salty food out, I'll bump up a few pounds in water weight and see all the work I've done being for naught.

It's almost impossible to lose weight without carefully controlling your food (that is eating real non-processed and non-salty foods).

One comment - I do play tennis and am an active sort of person, but I think diet is like 85% and activity is 15% - if you can control you diet, you'll be on a weight downtrend.

Good luck!

Weight Loss Lose weight in 3 days?? Apr 10 2009

I've always felt that water weight kind of goes in 3 day cycles - so it you time it right, you can be at the lower part of the cycle when you want to be at your "minimum bloat" self.

I would eat healthy (avoid salt and fast foods!) and drink quite a bit of water and take fiber on days 1 and 2 - then cut back on water (that is extra water) at the end of day 2  - by the afternoon of day three you should be hydrated but not bloated, and lookin' great!
