Fitness What do you do different when you burn > 2000 calories? Sep 09 2008

Ktcort13, behanna

Thanks for the responses.  I think as I lose weight and gain endurance the calories burned in a 2 - 3 hour ride will lessen.  I will try the Clif bar (never had one!) and snacks during the ride next Saturday to see how that feels.  Currently, I only carry a water bottle which I refill several times during the ride.  Since I take about a 10 minute break about every 10 miles, that will give me the chance to restock my snacks and water.  The course is a 9 mile "loop" so I pass my parked car enough to make it easy to sneak a bite and a drink.

You 'da man!  I would have thought giving up cigarettes would be much harder than coffee but your story on the caffein addiction was an eye opener.  What a great story and thank you being an inspiration for the rest of us coffee hounds!

I too find it hard to stick to the plan.  For me at least, it seems the best way is to split the calorie deficit 50/50.  So in your example of 600 calories you would shave 300 off your food and add 300 to your exercise for a total of 600 deficit calories per day.  You could play around with the split to see what works for you.

It would help us to understand why you are on a plan to lose weight.  Tell us why and that might underscore the reason you find it difficult.  Perhaps you want to be healthy, or just look better.  That's fine unless deep down you feel fine and really don't mind looking in the mirror.  In other words, your fine with your self image and don't see a burning need to change it.  At the end of the day "you got to want it".  So making up your mind that you need the plan versus want the plan can help you stay motivated.

Like the previous posters, there is no simple answer but rather suggestions for what works for others here on CC.  End the end, your path will be what you make it.  Not to sound hard but you own the problem and will be the one to take it on and fix it.  Believe me, it's hard for many of us but don't give up!

Original Post by melkor:

To maximize fat loss, do about 3 hours of strength training a week, and then as much cardio at all intensities as you have the time and inclination for. 3 hours of strength training is the useful limit to encourage muscle retention and maximum fat loss, and more than that does not improve your results over and above what the equivalent intense cardio can do for you because then you're doing more than what your body can recover from before the next session and you're limiting your results by limiting training intensity.

Does that 3 hour per week break down to about 3 times per week?  Twice per week at 1.5?  Does that time include the 'rest' between sets?  I'm not sure that I could get to an hour of weights doing just the core muscle groups.  Squats, pushups, and barbells take me about 20 to 30 minutes on the days I do weights.  I'm just starting on the weight training and take it slowly since I have lost so much muscle mass in the last 15 years.   Do you have a link to a routine for core muscle groups that you recommend?

I think I have the cardio plan down so at least that done for now.   Keeping the calories at 2000 is not that hard so I'm good there as well.

I think I'm more confused now than ever on cardio & strength.  I'm trying to do several things at once which I thought were pretty much on the same path:

(1) Get to my goal weight (lose 44 lbs).  (2) Maximize fat loss. (3) Increase strength and endurance.

So I have been doing mostly cardio to create the deficit and increase the endurance.  For example, yesteday I did a nice long ride at about 82% of my MHR for about 80 minutes (15 miles @ 14.5 mph).  Some cardio days are just walking at 65 - 70% of max for about an hour.  So I break the 90 minute rule in just 2 days!  On non cardio days I do some weights like 3 sets of pushups, squats, barbell stuff with the arms & chest, etc.   Trying to get to muscle failure btw 8 - 12 reps.

I'm pretty sure I can limit my walks/jogs/bike to 30 minutes.  However, that would reduce my calorie deficit by 1600 - 1800 per week.  How would I make up the difference?  I'm not even sure I have enough muscle mass in my body to generate the needed burn.

I'm willing to offer myself up as an experiment to science if someone would like to put the opposing views to a test.  Melkor? Tom?

I always wondered about the ladies bathoom stuff.  TMI but funny.  I would like to add: Please!  All building and resturant bathroom designers: Make the frek'n doors open OUTWARD as you LEAVE the bathroom.  You should be able to get out of any public bathroom using only your hip or butt to push the door.  I hate it when you have to have a "paper towel plan" to make sure you open the handle using a paper towel and one in the other hand to get out the second door.  How hard is it to frame a door so that you use the handle to get in and anything but your hands to get out?  <end rant>

Fitness Calories Burned Running Aug 21 2008
17:07 (UTC)

Yes, the calories depend on both speed (effort) and time. Outside of a lab it's hard to get an accurate count of what you actually burned.  If you wear a HRM, have a your treadmill keep track, and enter you stats here or other sites, you will of course get 3 different totals.  I've read in other forum posts that in general, the machines tend to overstate your actuals.  You can average them if you feel you must but I think the best thing is to pick one method and just use that number.  In the long run, it wont account for much of a difference on your final goal.  For me, I use my HRM simply to keep me in my target zone and let CC+ calculate the calories burned.

Perhaps because I'm old but...

No way.  I'm sorry but I can not approve of lowering the legal drinking age to 18.  My feelings on this are base on the fact that alcohol is a drug.  Since you can't know who will and who will not abuse it and drive, then you err on the side of caution.  That's the way it works....you give a wide margin of error for those few kids that will abuse.  While we need to vote and defend our freedoms, drinking is a recreation and not a right.  I don't think you can say since I'm old enought to vote and join the military that I'm old enough to take a legal drug and make good decisions (no like ruh-heelly).  You will have plenty of years left after the age of 21 to drink if you want.  <end rant>

I tried if for about 2 weeks when it first came out.  Back then I was not counting calories or doing cardio/strength.  I failed to stay within the limits of the total number of fat grams and so of course all I got was some 'events' and no results.  I've wavied off any pills, water loss, colon cleaning, whatevers in favor of just doing it right in the first place.  So I guess if you stay in the plan then it can work but I would recommend counting calories and exercise.

Then again water does have weight so I guess they can claim that.   Like the other have stated, slow and steady weight loss would be your best (and healthiest) bet.

We get the large jar of that stuff from Walmart...it's really not that expensive.  I don't know if there is any difference and the whey protein at Walmart vs. the really expensive stuff at the gym or GNC.

Seriously though - you look great! Your lats are getting there, I see.

I still can't do a single pull-up. Frown I'm almost there though.  Earlier this week i almost made it all the way up to complete a full pull-up; a couple months ago I couldn't even do that.

I'm gonna focus great attention on lats for sure.

Thanks and good luck to ya!

Don't feel bad.  I have gained so much weight while at the same time loosing so much muscle that I'm working on my first chin-up.  Perhaps we need to start a First Pull-Up club.

Mostly I daydream and think about odd bits of my life.   I rarely think about the actual exercise I'm doing.  There is one part of a bike trail that I have seen some snakes so when I approach that part I think about taking a picture of a snake on the trail and putting it up on CC!

HeHe.  I've lived in Texas since dirt was invented.  The funny thing is I really truly don't think I have the Texas Twang.  It's only when I travel that other's will bring it up but I still don't think it's that bad.  I only notice other accents from peeps from Boston, New York, Georgia, South Carolina, etc.  Some parts of Texas have folks with a strong twang from less populated areas like west Texas.  However, here in Big D you really don't hear it that much.

doug, as a self-proclaimed gym rat, I would recommend you weight train, weight train, weight train.  Oh, and weight train.  :o)

Cardio has its benefits as far as conditioning goes so I highly recommend doing that too.  Building muscle will be the best thing you can do for your body.  Take your measurements and then go pump some iron.  Don't focus too much on the scale since as you build muscle, you'll likely not see much change there.

I'm still confused on the weight training thing but I'm just starting out and here is my take on it: Just to get going, do the exercises you like to create a negative calorie intake.  For me it's really easy to get my butt out of bed and go for a walk or bike ride so that's the main part of my exercise plan.  The truth is that I'm really not that motivated to do a lot of strength training just yet.  I think the best long term plan is to combine the cardio, weights, and stretching that allows you to reach your goal.  I truly wish that I was more into the weights because of the results that you can achive.  Until then, I'll just do some upper body stuff with some easy-pezy dumbells and see how that goes.

Doug, the best exercise to get rid of belly fat is pushing away from the table and staying away from beer.  Everything else is just creating muscle under the fat.  However, if you prefer the creating muscle approach, crunches, bicycles and leg lifts are good.  The gym rats would have you do squats and lunges with heavy weights (they are big on that stuff).

I'm not really that focused on creating muscle so my real goal is to loose the belly fat and if I get toned along the way then so be it.  I've made some changes to my food choices that have my count down to about 2000 calories per day.  I walk and bike almost every day for about an hour so now all I can do is wait and see what happens.  I'm too old to drink beer now...one glass gets me drunk for about two hours and then I have a hangover for 3 days.  Wimpy I know.
