| Fitness | Burn Meter/ Exercise and Muscle? | Mar 04 2009 21:17 (UTC) |

I prefer to set at sedentary and then add in the calories burned for workout. I think this is most accurate. If you set it for very active do NOT also add in your calories burned, this is already factored in there. Someone with more muscle will invariably burn more calories in resting than someone with less muscle mass. |

I went through something like this my senior year in college, I couldn't stop throwing up. Turns out it was all the stress in my life took it's toll. It wouldn't always happen during stressful experiences but completely randomly through the day. I dropped 24 pounds in three months and was pushed to my emotional, physical and mental limits. Hopefully that isn't what's happening to you, because I ended up breaking down three days before the semester ended. If you're under too much stress (I hope not) cut your load back- it's not worth your well being. Otherwise, youve gotten some good advice, like the hypoglycemia. Do you need to take a pregnancy test....? |

Original Post by abaris: Muscle does weigh more than fat. A pound is a pound, true but that's not what we're talking about here. Consider density. Muscle is denser than fat, thus weighing more. Have you ever literally seen a pound of fat and a pound of muscle mass? HUGE DIFFERENCE. If your weight isn't changing but your pants are loose...? Case in point. Swapping densities.... |

Do some weight training! Sounds like you are doing wonderfully at getting enough cardio, and while that burns calories while you're doing it- it slows down and stops shortly after you're done. If you try building a little more muscle- it CONSTANTLY chews up calories for food. Also- check your protein levels when working out so much :) |

| Motivation | GRRR! Can anyone help me! | Feb 28 2009 21:07 (UTC) |

Just a thought- some people do well eating multiple small meals during the day... for me, my body does not respond well to that. I just won't lose weight. Three square meals and a snack is what happens to do well for me. My doc told me that for some people (like me) eating a little bit frequently never gives their body that feeling of satiety which can stimulate your whole digestive system which stimulates a whole host of other things. Also, try to cut back on nuts EXCEPT almonds- just a few, 4 or 5 with a meal will help give you that feeling of being full. Lastly, start weighing/measuring your portions. Invest in a food scale. It's easy to underestimate exactly how much you are consuming. These are a few things that worked for me, I hope it helps you. Good luck! |

| Foods | Anybody else HATE Walmart?! | Feb 18 2009 18:48 (UTC) |

I hate WalMart with a burning passion. I only go there to buy my windshield wipers (only place around that stocks the particular size I need). Where I live, I have a couple smaller farmers markets- they have the best produce and the best prices... much to my surprise. It so much nicer to pay less and then STILL have the food last longer than when buying from a typical grocer- MUCH fresher. Look around, shop around! Also, buy what's in season. Want something that's not in season? Turned to FROZEN goods (NOT CANNED- the canning process eliminates almost all nutritional value). For example, I buy frozen bell pepper strips in the winter, much cheaper than fresh! And there is not too much of a difference in my fajitas, you know? Something I do to make my dollars stretch a little farther, take the bell pepper strips for example, one night I make the fajitas, the next I use them in a stir fry and if there are any left over I cut up for a spaghetti sauce. Meal planning can be a good friend of yours- I hope this helps get the wheels turning :-) |

weigh yourself first thing in the morning. Most people prefer to weigh in bi-weekly or even weekly, this helps from getting discouraged when your weight will naturally fluctuate over a day or so (or certain times of the month, ya know?) Knowing this, I'm okay with weighing myself daily- it helps keep me motivated and if it's a pound up (or two) I don't get all bent out of shape. I weigh as much as five pounds heavier at night than in the morning... I neeeeevvver weigh myself at night. Good luck to you and all you do!!! |

Get your hands on Isagenix... or something similar. When ever I do a cleanse (it takes nearly a week) I drop about 5-7 pounds. (A friend of mine will drop about 10- but she weighs more than I do and exercises less). You MUST MAINTAIN a healthy lifestyle or it will come right back in a couple weeks. It's not a 'fast' and the Isagenix products are loaded with vitamins and minerals- I get lots of energy, too when I cleans with them... which is always nice when I need that extra boost. One more thing- don't just run until you can't any more... if you are running for weight loss. Try running two minutes and then walking two minutes.... this keeps your body just *below* a full aerobic workout so your running becomes more effective for burning calories (there is a range of heart rate and muscle use where your body burns calories exceedingly well, after a threshold has been passed you enter into aerobic exercise (which is amazing for your heart!) and while you will still burn calories, your body starts to pull from other sources of energy, too at this point (like muscle, sugars, etc...) |

I am no psychologist, but I do know three people very well that are bi polar, and when I was reading your post I couldn't help but think how you're going through, or have gone through some similar things these people I know have. Then I got to the line where you said you've been experiencing extreme highs and lows and that seems indictive of some emotional issues. Like I said, Im no psychologist, but you yourself have equated food with emotion in your post so there seems to be something psychological here. These vast ranges of emotions (especially being one extreme or the other) is the main point of diagnosis for bi-polar disorder. My point being here- what ever is happening with you, it's emotional at some level. You're better off seeking professional help, because you shouldn't take too much adivce from some yahoo on the internet :) Once you get what's going on in your head straight, the rest will fall into place. Don't stress so much about your inconsistencies and extremes in food, but think on a higher level here; think about the whole- not the part. |

You build muscle BECAUSE of tearing... it's essentially scar tissure. Not a bad thing at all! The muscle tears (hence the aching) and rebuilds (hence the need for good diet). The only thing you need to worry about is 48hrs (minimum) between working muscle groups to prevent exhaustion & your muscles from being able to repair. Think about it - if you lift, and lift again day after day you don't give yourself time to heal.. if you do that, you're fine!!! The end result, is stronger muscles! Tearing is a good thing, done right. Plus, once they're stronger they burn more calories, as well. Happy training! |

I think that calorie recommendation comes not so much because you HAVE to have that many- but as a teen you're still developing and growing. It seems that is about how much you will need to consume to get enough nutrients to continue to develop at a healthy rate. In the developmental years, it is never recommended one diets, for that reason. |

I start lose at 1150-1200kcal per day, with three days a week exercising... at that, I drop about .5-1 lb a week. If I want to do 2 lbs, I have to cut down to about 900-1,000 kcal. Sucks for me, but I've got a slow metabolism even with working out and eating well. (Before I get any less than 1000kcal lectures being 5'10", it's ok- my doc and I have talked and this is the solution for me :-) |

could be UTI, bladder infection or kidney infection (if a UTI goes too long this can happen) or an STD. During sex, bacteria can get worked into your urinary tract, some people are more prone to infections than other (I am, for example). Wash before (if you can) and after sex immediately don't use anything with fragrances. And go see your doctor, if you're already on Depo then your parents know about your sexual activity I assume? Tell them you think you have a UTI, possibly STD. The lower back pain suggests a UTI or kidney infection. Don't let it go- infections can get carried away quickly regardless of what kind it is. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have ANY questions |

| Health & Support | Gaining on too low of calories? | Sep 11 2008 20:26 (UTC) |

From webmd... When you fast, your body is forced to dip into energy stores to get the fuel it needs to keep going, so you will lose weight. The big question is how long you'll keep that weight off. Because food was often scarce for our ancestors, our bodies have been genetically programmed to combat the effects of fasting. When you eat less food, your metabolism slows down to conserve energy. Than when you go back on your old diet, your lowered metabolism may cause you to store more energy, meaning that you'll probably gain back the weight you lost and possibly even put on more weight when eating the same calories you did before the fast. As you fast, your body will adjust by reducing your appetite, so you'll initially feel less hungry. But once you've stopped fasting, your appetite hormones will kick back into gear and you may actually feel hungrier and be more likely to binge. Research has shown that fasting on alternate days can help people lose weight, but not for long. In one study, people who followed an alternate-day fasting diet shed pounds, even when they ate all they wanted on the non-fasting days. However, they couldn't maintain the weight loss over time. |

pretty much the only thing you need to rest from is weight lifting... you have to repair. Moderate cardio like that is just fine- as long as you aren't having adverse reactions (sudden loss of energy, frequent illness like colds) If these symtpoms start to emerge it can mean you're not resting enough (I've done it before- you'll know if it happens) Keep up the good work :-) |

A brace could definitely help. Give it a go- you wont hurt yourself trying one out. My knee started out like that in high school (also in dance class, ironically enough) and 8 years later, after more dancing and running, I've got a bum knee that bothers me all the time. Don't end up like me :-) |

| Weight Loss | Can a medium framed person ever get down to 110-120? | Sep 08 2008 20:10 (UTC) |

You and I are about the same build, height, frame and weight. Last year I was down to 138 and I was getting comments that was looking too thin- but I think it was people just used to me being a bit thicker. I thought I looked amazing (and I want to get down to that weight again). I still had curves, but my problem areas were hardly problems anymore; I was a size 4 (and 5'10")and working out a lot. I felt AMAZING! I can't imagine being 110lbs (even 120)... I know I would look disgustingly thin... and I have a feeling you would too!! You said you don't want to be supermodel thin, but 110lbs at our height is pretty much there... ick :P If you're working out- there's no need for less than 130 lbs (and that's pushing it, if you ask me)- you'll be quite thin at that weight, trust me on this one :-)

This exact same thing happened to a friend of mine - except hers was pushed far into her cervix. She ended up with TSS. You should be very careful- however rare it is a potentially deadly condition. Watch for a fever. It's something that I wouldn't mess with... if you can, call your ob/gyn and make an appointment for testing, your doctor can advise you further. I think for my friend it was a couple serious rounds of antibiotics. |

| Weight Loss | Green tea - does it really work? | Sep 08 2008 01:12 (UTC) |

Here's what the Mayo Clinic says about green tea and weight loss "There are several small human studies addressing the use of green tea extract (GTE) capsules for weight loss or weight maintenance in overweight or average weight individuals. Study results are mixed. Better research is needed before a strong recommendation can be made in this area. " They gave it a "C" grade.... nothing exceptional. It does however, have lots of antioxidants! Drink up anyway, atleast that's what I think :-) |

Have you consulted your doc. about this? Maybe a couple blood tests are in line to make sure everything is working ok. Maybe you've already done all that though. My doctor was so instrumental in keeping me motivated and giving me tools to stay in line and motivated. I love my doc- I hope you do too! They can be such powerful tool in our health goals! Also, it's counter-intuitive to up your calorie intake to lose weight. If the 1500kcal a day was working before, it shouldn't NOT work anymore. Don't forget that calories are energy- what isn't used is stored and only when there is a deficite weight loss occurs. Here's a couple things that have helped me along the way.. If you're exercising, maybe try tacking on an extra 10 minutes to that walk or swim- it all adds up, right? You may have hit a plateau and need to kick your routine in the rear and rev things up a bit. Some other commentors recommended B vitamins, fiber and I would recommend to maybe up your water intake, as well- it is such a great way to cleanse our bodies! Good luck to you! |

Didn't work for me... However, I couldn't take it as recommended b/c I would get bad cramping & I just don't eat much fat anyway. Clinical trials for the prescription version has worked- but weight loss is slight with the OTC version, I'm sure it works if you follow directions. The horror stories you hear about occurs when one takes the product with say... greasy pizza. The product blocks the fat (and there's so much more in foods like that) and it moves on down the line just as it was on that pizza... I'll leave it at that. Information on the alli website & start pack about eating right and exercising is spot on and if followed will result in a healthy body for pretty much anyone- regardless if you use their product. |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
