amethystgirl: "we didn't evolve to wear shoes"

Okay, so we never used to wear shoes hundreds of years ago, but our feet have actually evolved around us WEARING shoes. We don't have Neanderthal feet anymore and neither are we societies that live in the jungle who have never worn shoes.

It does sound refreshing though for a change. I personally would kill my body by doing that - flat feet which make my ankles roll in which make my knees roll in which make my hips... yadda yadda.

I also hear that the cushioning of the shoes which absorbs impact not only projects your joins but protects your organs so that they're not bashing around inside you as harshly. Sorry, I'm too lazy to find a reference though.

My friend lost A LOT of weight recently and managed to get her boobs done on the NHS. I think her reasoning was that it had blown her confidence and was proving to be extremely uncomfortable, and she's only 22. I thought that was pretty crazy!

Pointless post, sorry! x

Fitness Reebok Easy Tone Shoes Nov 16 2009

My family have been selling and fitting shoes for over 130 years and we have 4 shoe shops - we sell fitflops and the boot version (which i wear a lot). Apart from any toning benefits they may or may not have, they force you to walk from the hip and stand up straight with your shoulders back. Good posture cures a variety of ankle, knee, back and neck problems because if there is something wrong with your feet (or how you walk with them) it just creates a chain reaction upwards. Walking properly also gets you to use leg and butt muscles you may not have felt while normally strolling along lazily.

Wooden clogs have the same benefits, are dead cheap and don't look like orthopedic shoes.

Loads of people have. I can see it a mile off.

It's not like it's a disease, he just thinks different and doctor's can't do anything about it. Either grin and bear it or learn to work it. But really, this doesn't affect your dieting at all - sounds like you are doing great anyway! It's you who will be reaping the benefits later, not him.

"Is this common among many people with Aspergers syndrome?"

Well if you know he has it then SURELY you know the answer is yes! They always think they're right. Give him a piece of actual evidence - a medical essay or something. He'll probably change his mind then.

(ps. not being nasty about AS people, I just happen to be related to a lot of them.)

It's Lyle's Black Treacle.

Well its just a normal desert spoon... same amount above as below. At least that's how I was taught to measure it. It's just a lot of hassle getting it all off the spoon to measure it. I just mix it into my warm breakfast and then put the spoon straight in my mouth so ...

Also I have an awful, cheap set of scales that aren't electronic and fail to measure 1-25/50g very accurately.

My mother maintains that you can fit all exercise into daily activities:

Walking from the hip and focusing on the muscles that are being used.

Walking up stairs 2 steps at a time.

Lifting from your legs and thighs and not your back.

Concentrating on using your shoulders or legs to push the lawnmower and not just strolling along letting it drive itself.

That's just a few - I think that's the best attitude to have because you can do it for a lifetime. She's mid-50's and I'm 20 yet I'm still envious of her body, haha.

Health & Support Have to Wake Up Very Early To Use The Bathroom? Nov 05 2009

My family just use it as a health supplement (we switch between seeds, hemp, flax, etc for the good fats) but I assure you, it does what it says on the packaging, right down to the unpleasant details!

You don't need to squeeze it if you don't like it strong. I usually boil the kettle the minute I'm up, have my time in the bathroom and pour the water after. I just drink as much of it as I can while I'm doing everything else I need to do before I leave the house. I'm a university student so I NEVER leave myself time to mooch about before I have a class, but I do eat fruit and yogurt for a quick breakfast. Sometimes I only get through half a cup of the tea, but even that helps.

Do you drink enough water and plain teas through the whole day? That could make a bigger difference in the long term.

Have a cup of hot water with a slice of lemon in it first thing in the morning.

Once I've finished it I KNOW I'm going to 'go'. Good for your bowels plus you get the added bonus of it being good for clearing your skin too.

Oh, and this one sounded like a complete gimmick when I saw them in my mum's house, but the first time I tried it (by the instructions) it it REALLY worked. They're called 'hemp hearts' and I think my mum just sprinkles them over cereal or puts them in soups, but one of the recommendations is to have a tbsp (or something close) with only fruit first thing in the morning to clear out your colon and stuff. Tried it one day and it worked...  like an ENTIRE colon cleanse! Sadly they're a bit out of my budget so I just stick to my morning tea.

Here's a link: http://www.hemphearts.com/HempHeartsDiet.htm

Hope it helps Smile

I've been using moisturizer since I was about 15. I'm 20 now and started using night moisturizer and eye cream last year. My skin actually glows now, and I never get negative comments about how pale my skin is anymore.

I use the "Simple" cleansers/toners/moisturizers etc, just because they're, well, simple I guess haha. At our age the worst thing to do would be to be putting on a moisturizer with too many chemicals and stuff in it.

Oh, and a really good once a week exfoliator to use it bicarbonate of soda. Cheap, no random chemicals in it and it's not too harsh on the skin.

Weight Loss Natural Appetite Suppressants?? Nov 05 2009

I'll usually try and incorporate a handful of seeds or a flaxseed mix to every meal because it keeps me fuller than if I don't eat it, and it's only an extra 80-150 calories which is less than a bar of chocolate or donut later on. Taking my omega pills seem to stop me wanting to snack after a meal too.

Other than that I stick to snacking on:

Very small apples and pears (50cals)

2 squares of 80% dark chocolate (around 200 cals but the bitterness means it's far more satisfying than anything artificially sweet)

Any variation of green tea - right now I LOVE green tea with aloe vera and rose petals

Celery.

I'd say if you are hungry, just feed yourself. If it's good for you and you are watching your calories in total it won't do any harm at all Smile

Edit: to get cinnamon in your diet you can buy cinnamon sticks at your local health food shop. Break a small bit off and either let it sit in boiling water and drink, or add part of the stick to back tea. Mmm... reminds me of cosy winter nights!

Oh so many. Off the top of my head:

1. Food from the bin. Eurgh.

2. A whole jar of peanut butter

3. A whole jar of nutella

4. An out-of-date (by 2 months) coconut cake

5. A box of ready made icing

6. Tortilla wraps covered in butter

7. Whole tubs of hummu

8. A whole box of dry cereal

9. Spoonfuls of mayonnaise

10. Massive hunks of cheese.

Gross list. It's making me feel hungry though D:

This would have been my exact list, minus 4 & 9!

I also one had a whole packet of Rich Tea biscuits with pate on top. The combination of sweet and savory was vile!

To be quite honest, the best thing for her to do would be to stay in bed and for you to HELP her ie. make sure she has enough apririn and nurofen to take the fever down, and if she needs more food in the house, be kind enough to run and get it for her.

That's the advice that our university gave us.

Some of us cannot MOVE to go home, let alone pay for it.

I'd say ditching her is just childish. And yes, you are over reacting. It would be more dangerous for your flat mate if she was left alone and developed complications, no?

I've just powered through the dreaded Swine Flu for just under 2weeks. Didn't take the vaccine because it shortens the symptoms by only a day and I was already going through the worst of it. I'm also not a fan of medicine or jabs. I even skipped the Mumps jab which was terrible, but at least my body fought it on its own.

I cant even count on two hands how many people I know in Scotland who have had it and I don't know anyone (personally) who has suffered complications. To be honest, I know some people who regretted getting the vaccine because it brought on the symptoms straight after they took it.

I'm pretty annoyed... I pride myself on never getting flu :(

How about 'Shloer'? It's a sparkling juice drink that comes in flavours like white grape, white grape and elderflower, apple etc.

We always have it in the house for non-drinkers.

Think you could probably find a good flavour amongst their varieties to go with different things.

I don't disagree with melkor, I just think it is excessive.

To increase body mass (ie.muscle) you need a calorie SURPLUS, not deficit. So say the average female eats 2000cals to maintain, you need MORE than that if you want some muscle tone, but are already at a good weight. So, you are going to have to exceed your 1400 target.

Protein isn't the magic food:

"However, most people in the UK eat more protein than they need, so even top athletes should be getting enough protein to meet their needs. This means there should be no need for you to increase the amount you eat of foods rich in protein and there is no need to buy protein supplements."

The Vegetarian Society also says that if you are over 19 years old, then 45g is adequate. I see no reason in increasing that unless you are a bodybuilder. Too miuch protein, in the long term, is just as bad for your body as too little. The second link is an information sheet from the Vegetarian Society that you might like to look at.

I found it a godsend after trying a bunch of stuff that either made me feel like eating was going out of fashion, or made me emotional, or that didn't stop the body crippling pms that used to send me to hospital.

I just made this for my lunch today:

http://caloriecount.about.com/curried-lentils -recipe-r254742

It's pretty much no fuss cooking - throw everything in and let it cook. Makes 4 servings so you can even chuck some in the freezer for some healthy ready meals. Oh, and it's very cheap as well as good for you! I use roughly chopped leeks instead of onions so that the texture and look of it is a bit more interesting.

  • Eat on a smaller plate. You will eat up to 22% less than usual. They confirmed this by giving one group of people a small tub of popcorn, and one group of large popcorn. They were asked to eat as much as they wanted. Both groups ate to their full and didn't finish their tubs. The group with the large tubs ate significantly more because the food was available, and they could not stop when they were full.
  • Our bodies are wired to seek out variety in food. So keep away from the buffets because it is in our nature to want lots of different things. You are likey to eat about 30% more compared to when your choice is more limited. This is because our ancestors enjoyed and looked for variety when there wasn't much food about. Their experiment included letting people help themselves to free sweets - one bowl all purple, the other bowl multi-coloured. The multi-coloured sweetie bowl was finished twice as quickly as the single coloured ones.
Can't seem to remember the last one though...

If you are still eating well and all the rest then it's probably going to be good for keeping you hydrated and helping your insides.

I love all these fancy herbal teas because they taste so nice. My mum is also a fan of using herbs to help a lot of ailments and I've become the same.

I think these 'detox' teas get a bad name because people think that they only need to drink the tea, or that it will help them lose weight.

I switch between a cleanse tea, a clarity tea (I can't remember the brands) and different flavours of green tea. To be honest, I just drink them for variety, like changing what dinners you have each week, but any benefits from them are greatly received when I feel I need it.

Unfortunately, I've found an eating plan that works wonders for weight loss...it's eating 5 small meals a day (approx. 1300 cal/day).  Lots of lean meat, green veggies, egg whites, grapefruit, water, all those good things that rev up your metabolism.  But by constantly feeding your body with fresh and lean foods, you're able to keep your metabolism up, preventing it from going into "starvation mode".  Unfortunately you may always have that constant hunger and when you feel that, that means you're body is dipping into it's stored fuel(ie fat).  It's not easy, but it does work.

Sounds good, except for the calorie allowance! Females under 21's should not consume less than 1500 cals a day. But if you only have 10lbs to lose, you could afford for it to be higher anyways.

I think if you are constantly hungry you may actually notice your body STORING fat and not burning it....

Being that you're 19, I think it's more about intuitive eating, rather than consuming yourself with numbers and calories.

All of your meals and snacks look really filling. Maybe take time to understand the feelings of hunger a bit more. That PB sandwich could be swapped with an apple for a snack instead. Snack time doesn't have to be hefty, but just enough to ward off hunger until your next meal.

Also, while enjoying what you are eating and concentrating on the flavours and your fullness, you may not even need to finish the whole of a meal, just because it has been put in front of you.

I think if you do all this it'll become habit and you won't need to worry about your weight because it will lower and sit at a place where your body feels comfiest/healthiest.

Ps. if you are wanting to exercise, do it because it's fun and you will always want to do it. Maybe take up a sport instead of something like the gym?

Good luck whatever happens though!
