you're having breastfeeding issues because you are starving your body.  Calorie count does not consider the fact that you are breastfeeding in their recommendations.

Breastfeeding requires an additional 500 cals/day roughly.  Not only are you having quantity issues, but the quality of your milk is also probably suffering.

If you want to bf, you need to eat more.  Its that simple.  Worry about the weight after you are done bf'ing.

I never did jarred food.  I think it tastes nasty.

He gets adult food.  I send him to daycare with breakfast, lunch, and snacks:

Breakfast:  cream of wheat or oatbran mixed with whole organic yogurt, berries, and ground flax.

Lunch: some form of carbohydrate (whole wheat pasta, sweet potato, winter squash, white potato, etc), some form of protein (beans, tofu, cheese), and some veggies (he likes peas, carrots, corn, green beans).

Snack:  usually fruit:  cut up strawberries, watermelon, banana, etc.

For dinner since we dont' have a lot of time, its usually a natural nutbutter sandwhich (peanut butter, cashew butter, or almond butter) with low sugar jelly and some more veggies or fruit.  I may make him a scrambled egg with a bagel occassionally.

He eats anything except animal meat.  No chicken, beef, or fish.  Just doesn't like it.

Weight Gain Reached goal now what? May 01 2009

who picked your weight goal?  A doctor?  a nutritionist?

It is still very low and could be too low for you.  In fact, it is unlikely for you to get your period back at  a BMI that low.  And if going higher scares you, then that is a sign you are not recovered yet.  Recovery is more than a weight goal.

I would keep talking to your therapist about this and find out what it is about going higher that scares you so much.

BMI takes into consideration height.

if you don't see how small you are, then it could either be the way you carry it or part of an ED:  part of an ED is not being able to see how sick you are.

Its water weight and the additional food weight.

Stay away from the scale for awhile.

they add fiber and other additives to it.  its really not a 'yogurt' in the sense of a real yogurt.

Weight Gain nutritionist's suggestion: 1300? Apr 24 2009

1300 isn't even a maintenance target.  its a diet intake.

she probably is used to patients eating far far less than that and thinks that 1300 is a good starting place.  If I were you, I'd suggest something higher and have her help you with that.

Well, those two pounds are probably water weight and the actual food itself.

Your period will probably not come back at 110, as that is still underweight for your height.  You really should be closer to 120 at minimum.

I also would NOT do cardio if you are looking to regain your period.  Cardio increases stress hormones, which can inhibit menstruation and ovulation.

the calories are wrong.

they are assuming fiber has no calories, but it does (2 cals/gram).

so don't think they are really low cal.  they aren't.  what a lot of products do is they add a lot of insoluble fiber to make the calories look like less than they really are.  by law, they are allowed to not count fiber towards calories, even though nutritionally they DO have them.

any processed 'low carb' product will do this.  its a waste of $$ and just marketing.  but it works, obviously...they are getting you to buy it.

Weight Gain worried about sugar Apr 23 2009

not a fan of percentages because they vary far too much based on caloric intake.

that said, sugars from fruit are fine.  what isn't fantastic are added sugars to processed foods.  if you're really concerned, drop some of the fruit in favor of more complex carbs.

nice job on the weight gain.

5 weeks is really a bit early.  closer to 8 weeks, you should be able to see something.  They are pretty $$ if you dont' have insurance.

go for a blood test. that is more accurate and sensitive than a urine test.

5 weeks isn't early at all, you can still detect the amniotic sac and see the 'yolk'.  Even though the baby hasn't become a baby you can see it.  An ultrasound around here is about 100-300$.   And a blood test is a good idea as well, but you should be getting positives by now if you are pregnant.  Also If you haven't been on birth control normally and just took it recently it could affect your period as well.  Good luck and hope you find out soon!

depending on the person.  I know many who saw nothing at 5 weeks but at 6 weeks finally saw the sac.  Better to wait an additional week or two and be sure.

Weight Gain Fat sources = period return? Apr 19 2009

if you are really serious about regaining your period, I would hold off on the running for awhile.  your body needs some time to recover and get healthy.  Running certainly won't help that, even with eating more....running creates a lot of hormonal changes that eating more isn't going to affect.

Weight Gain Fat sources = period return? Apr 18 2009

Fats certainly help, but time at a healthy weight without restricting/over-exercising is most important.

That said, definitely up the fats/decrease the fiber.  Healthy fat sources:  fish oil supplements (everyone should take them), full fat dairy, nuts, nut butters (try almond or cashew for a change), whole eggs, salmon and other fattier fish, red meat, avocado, seeds, etc.  Use oils in your cooking.

As for the doc who said your blood tests were 'fine'...this is why doctors shouldn't give advice on this.  If you are not getting your periods, your blood tests are NOT fine.  Your hormones cycle each month, and a one-time blood test isn't going to show your problem:  that your hormones are NOT cycling.  And if she said not to gain weight, it again proves that she doesn't know anything about this problem.  But most docs do not...you need to see an endocrinologist for advice on this sort of problem.

To get your period back:

Eat a balanced intake with lots of fats.  Don't 'load up' on high fiber foods...you'd be surprised how many girls with this problem eat a ton of fruit/veggies with practically no fats.

Make sure your aren't over-exercising and you are resting appropriately.  Endurance exercise is the worst thing you could do, so if you're a runner you should cut down.  Take up yoga.

Try to keep your stress level down

Work on any ED thoughts:  those actually do contribute

Make sure you're sleeping enough

Your body is vulnerable to weight change, so try to keep at a healthy weight, and it will take time for your body to kick back into gear

if your husband makes bottles, it means your kiddo is taking them...can't he give a few?  why not?  my husband did one feeding at midnight, and then i took the 4am one.  and that was when we were both working, so no excuses there.

have you tried swaddling?  it really helps them sleep longer...its the arm reflex that wakes them up, and swaddling inhibits that reflex...they don't smack themselves awake.

Pregnancy & Parenting I'm soooo hungry, please help!!!! Apr 17 2009

in pregnancy large hormone changes result in HUGE water weight fluctuations.  so a lot of that gain is water.  you're also increasing your blood volume, your uterus volume, etc....i guarantee most of that weight is NOT fat but water, blood, organs, etc.

you're going to be hungry.  that's what pregnancy is.  each pregnancy is different, so dont' compare it to your last ones.

you're fine.  good luck

you would do fine increasing your cals since you are still at a low weight.

healthy fats:  walnuts, fish oil supplements, nut butters, flax, avocado, full fat dairy, eggs, higher fat fish (salmon, tuna), olive oil, other oils (walnut, avocado, sesame, etc), natural butter (actually good source of omega 3 if it comes from grass fed cow), etc.

I don't like eating by percentages, I eat by grams.  I make sure I hit somewhere around 70-90 grams a day.

Weight Gain you SHOULD exercize when gaining Apr 12 2009

If you are underweight, the risk of intense exercise far outweighs any appetite increase.

You are already at risk of heart attack, stroke, and bone fractures.  Not to mention that exercise increases cortisol, and that hormone is already elevated.  It can also delay the resumption of menses if you have lost it.

Other than walking, yoga, or other non-intense exercise, if you are really underweight you should NOT be doing any formal intense exercise unless cleared by a physician.

Weight Gain need advice Apr 04 2009

You can't.

Get yourself in the weight room.  Bench, squat, deadlift, do military presses.  The body buildling bible is ok, but its really geared for 'supplemented' people...will it work for you, sure.  Is it the best...feh.

I would pick up 'the new rules of lifting' by alwyn cosgrove.  MUCH BETTER.  Also has diet advice for you.

Weight Gain Supposed to gain weight: but how can it not go to my stomach? Apr 04 2009
13:59 (UTC)

Can't avoid it.  You just have to try to remember that it WILL even out in time.

A lot of it is bloating.  Some of it is fat due to your increased stress hormones (which will make most of the fat gain to to the stomach).  The bloating will decrease, and as you become more healthy, the stress hormones will go down and the weight will redistribute.

The only alternative is to NOT gain weight...which isn't an alternative.  Long term vs short term goals.

Its pretty common, actually.  If you can find someone to eat with you, that would be helpful.  Or, call someone and let them know that you will be eating and have them call you back. Or, perhaps chat with someone on the phone or over the computer while you eat.

Maybe go out and eat in public?  Even if you are 'alone', you can eat outside in a park and have people around you.

I know we've chatted about this before.

Unless you are weighing all your foods, you can't know you are eating exactly that many calories.  'a handful of nuts' can be anywhere from 150 - 400 cals.

1500 cals is too low anyway.  your diet is very very low, even with that free meal.

some of that weight is probably water.  as I said before, if I were you, I would try to put on a little more weight, rest, make sure you are well nourished, and be patient.  You're still at a low weight for your height.
