Yeah I love walking. It's just that I don't have the luxury of devoting a whole hour of my time per day to walking. Plus walking doesn't do anything to build strength or anything.. and there aren't any hills to walk up here.

Hahaha. Sport? I wish! Obviously you're not aware you're talking to the most uncoordinated person.. ever.

I checked and there aren't any exercise dvds at my uni's library... and you have to pay for membership to the gym :O

After exams I will put all of your advice to work ;)

Excellent! Thanks Melkor, and while I have you here.. Does it matter that there's not a whole lot of protein in my diet? Isn't it important to have some in your diet while you're doing this kind of stuff?.. Protein has got to be the most expensive macronutrient :(...

Today I went grocery shopping and I think the plan was to buy products of low calorific value so that if I did end up bingeing on them (unlikely.. fruits and veggies..funny how we never gorge on celery?? I don't anyway..) that it wouldn't matter.. and bought some 100cal packs of these rice cracker things. Yes.. It's all about willing oneself and constantly being aware. They were having a bake sale at uni and I sort of fell into a trance and bought some baked goods and after I ate them I was like "Now why did I do that?!?!" Hahaha.  So it's being aware of what you're doing.. and constantly being on guard.

Thanks for the tips!!

That's some good stuff girls!

@stayinthenight: Wow. Impressed. Thanks! I think I shall stock up on some 100cal snacks the next time I go grocery shopping. And gum. Haha.. had some friends over last night and they left a 4kg bag of ice in the freezer.. this morning I was wondering what I was going to do with it!!

@whatever07: because it is so good! ahaha.. no.

@mallymom: Uhhh.. I'm sort of trying to get 'back' to the calorie counting life. Last year I did so well! I lost 44lbs. But this year regained 17lbs... took a big long break and got lazy. Unfortunately so busy with study I often feel too tired to go and exercise. You're right though, it's about deciding to be healthy no mattter what. I'm sure I could manage if I really put in the effort.

Fitness Podcasts for HIIT? Nov 16 2008

Yeah, I was thinking how great it'd be just to have something tell me what to do. octo-luv, how do you time your runs? Do you just use a stopwatch? I feel like I'd be likely to forget to check the time, or like my arms would be pumping ot fast for me to read. I just really want to know, how people manage HIIT when not on a machine.

But yes, a podcast would be sweet!

I'd make one if I knew how.

Weight Loss What made you WANT to lose weight ? Oct 29 2008

I felt aimless and helpless and didn't know what to do with life. In my desperation to find some kind of goal I decided I would lose weight. That's what made me really want to lose weight. And it's kind of funny that I'd endured years of people making little comments about my size and that their comments meant nothing to me. It's seems so obvious, but my revelation came when I realised that I had to do it for me. Not my family or my friends or the stupid idiots who made the comments. And it helped to realise how apathetic I'd been over the years.

Fitness Nautilus No Good.... Help!! Oct 20 2008
12:37 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice....

sybil, I'm pretty sure the gym membership involved setting up a program for me so I will go and ask. I guess I was unsure of how willing they would be to help me.

carolann, I've ordered the book at my local bookshop but it won't be in for 4-6 weeks. :'( I've read a lot of the fantastic things people have said about this book and so I'm really impatient to get it now. My fault for not ordering it sooner. So, I'm going to have to figure out some kind of workout before I get it.

masheperd, that's a really good idea. I totally dismissed the idea of group classes. My gym has Body Pump.. So I'll definitely give that a go. Thanks!

eal, I think I wa just mad that they didn't bother explaining weights to me. I don't think I've entirely ruled out Nautilus. The one that works abs, works for me because I've got some pretty weak abs as I found out. And it's more challenging than just plain old crunches. I just want the best of both... and also, thanks for clearing up the whole 8-12 reps, 3 sets thing. I was wondering about that. Also, how long do you pause between each set?

Thanks again for your advice.

Ha.. you guys are funny. No, I've read enough on these forums to know that high reps of tiny weights do diddly-squat. Trust me, I wont be one of those girls flapping around with a 2lbs. weight. At the gym they've got me on the machines and, after explaining how to use the machines, left me to my own devices pretty much. I've still got a few more questions, but I'll probably just ask them in another post or check if anyone else has already asked. Okay, thanks heaps for all your advice everyone. I'm really keen to start lifting now.

Ciao, Jen.

I almost screamed with excitement when I read your post! I've been doing shotokan karate for a few months now and when I started I was 180lbs. And since then I've become the biggest advocator of karate - I LOVE karate and my weight is not an issue there.

In my dojo, a considerable percentage of the people there are overweight/obese. Don't worry about what people think and just go for it!

Seriously, I am so so happy that I gave it a go despite the fact that I was considerably overweight. Since I've started, I've become more toned/cardiovascularly fit/coordinated.

So please give karate a go, you won't regret it! Karate Rocks!!

I used to get charley horses too and so I went to see my doctor. He said that it was due to low sodium levels. Which makes sense because people trying to losing weight tend to avoid sodium. Anyways, I did what he said and I hardly ever get them now. So, maybe you should try upping your intake of sodium (don't go crazy with the salt shaker though!), it worked for me.

I eat pretty well... so I don't think there's anything to worry about in that department. But I'm not sure what to do exercise-wise in regards to cardio and strength training. I started that C25K running plan and now I think I've messed up my knee a little. So, I don't know... back to walking till my knee heals? And what kind of strength training can you do without joining a gym or buying fancy equipment as I definitely do not have the money for it?

Jen,

You don't need to join a gym to lose weight or build muscle. Many people are under the impression that the only way they can work out is by joining a gym. I can't give you any medical advice regarding your knee as I am not qualified to tell you whether or not you are able to run, but as far as exercising without joining a gym, you could run/walk (when you are able to) for the same amount of time you would allot on cardio machines, and you could do pushups, sit ups, flutter kicks (this is when you lay on your back and lift your legs up one at a time, keeping them straight and switching back and forth), or if you have even a little money, pick up a medicine ball or some free weights and do squats and some weight lifting exercises.

Do you subscribe to any fitness magazines? They're very helpful with exercises you can do at home. :)

Thanks for the tips! I never thought of fitness mags... I'll definitely give them a go.

Hey I'd love to join! I'm 17, going to uni next year and don't want to be fat anymore! Looking to lose 24-25 pounds by Christmas. Christmas would be perfect as it's my birthday then and to lose all that weight would be THE BEST PRESENT EVER to myself. Anyway:

Current Weight: 156lbs. (Down from 184 :D)

Height: 5 foot 4 or somewhere near there (165cm)

Goal Weight: 132lbs.

That aside, I wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to seeing the number on my scales go down.

~ Jen Smile
