Health & Support Upping cals to LOSE Jul 27 2009

Okay, so there are some people on here requesting some actual evidence of upping cals to lose, and I read this thread about a year ago, and realized I was seriously undereating as well. I started to up my cals at about 95lbs (I'm 5ft and small frame), and from July to December gained 9lbs. It was during that time that I would try to eat at least 1200 calories a day, eating 1500 some days. I felt like I was eating  too much I was constantly full and bloated during this time, and the scale just kept going up and up. It got to a point where I did not want to gain any more weight, so I began to work with a personal trainer and my weight not only didn't go down, but instead went up. I was at a loss of what to do with the weight I put on , and to this day a year later, I'm still struggling to get it off. I've since lost 3lbs by eating until I'm full, not counting calories but eating a healthy balanced diet. I still have no idea what to do to lose the rest, and it gets frustrating, but I think my body has reached its healthy weight, which I'm not 100% comfortable with.

Sooo in conclusion, this method didn't work for me and the weight of upping my cals brought up my weight....although it is definately a healthy weight, sooo I guess this worked out to be bitter sweet. Good luck to y'all. I woudl still recomend it.

Yup, lets agree on doin just a weekend thing, and for those who are ok during the week, limit your weekend drinking to 2-3 or 1-2? Whatever is reasonable for you....are we in??? (I say this as I have my first glass of wine in 5 days teehee, man is it good with dinner!)

Thanks for the posts....I am willing to eat more, I'm just finding it a struggle. I'm 5ft and 103lbs. Here is a typical day for me:

B: always rolled oats, tablespoon of bp, a splash of milk and a banana/coffee

Lunch: Sandwich on whole grain bread, lean meat like turkey, and low fat havarti

Snack: Apple or granola bar

Dinner: Rice chicken and veg sir fry with half a can of cream of mushroom soup stirred in, or chicken breast, sweet potato with plain yogurt and veggies

Sometimes I enjoy a glass of wine or 2 a couple days a week. :) If that helps any, I'd love to take some more suggestions . Thanks!

The Lounge Let's talk about kids being bullied/harrassed... Apr 22 2009

Hi there, I know I am not a parent, but I am a teacher and I think that it is just as important for teachers as well as parents to be educated on bullying behaviour and how to prevent it with our kids.

One of my experiences in my undergrad was working in a school with children grades 5-6. I was implementing a program called Peace by PEACE. This program is specifically designed to bring university students into the classroom and teach children about bullying and conflict resolution. This is done through interactive games, discussions about personal experiences - to let kids know they aren't as different from one another as they think. It teaches children to recognize verbal and non verbal signs of anger, ways to de-escalate anger and situations where bullying is about to happen, on their own. This program makes teachers and children aware of the real issues, and gives students the tools to deal with it on their own. I worked with these kids for 4 months, and saw a marked improvement in communication and bullying within the class and outside at recess. I would reccomend any parent get ahold of the resources to implement a program like this in your area. I know this program so far exists in Atlanta, Baltimore, Toronto, Hamilton, and a few more locations.

Please take the time to see if programs like these exist in your child's school or in your community. They DO work.

did you even read what I wrote? Do you realize this is a forum for free speech, and the people who post here are NOT seeking to be told to get help? Not everyone in the world needs to hit this benchmark you have created for all human beings as being over 100lbs. How dare you diagnose me with an eating disorder when you have no idea of my diet and excersize habits. You need to get off your high horse and perhaps give some advice that is actually useful rather than skim through peoples posts and diagnose them with eating disorders that they do not have.

Any compassionate people with thoughtful comments on my current condition would e appreciated.

Well I think when I was eating maintenance it was slightly over some days, under other days. This is generally what I eat on a sample day:

B: 1/2c quaker quick cook oats with soy milk and a banana (sometimes w a tsp of pb) and a coffee with soy milk

snack: if I get a chance to have on in the morning its either an apple or some carrots

Lunch: usually whole grain bread or something like that with lean turkey, low fat cheese and lettuce, and sometimes 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with a bit of organic jam

snack: when I get home I will usually have a cookie or granola bar

dinner: salad with about an oz of bleu cheese and half a large chicken breast seasoned with a sweet potato, and a bit of  plain fat free yogurt on top

that to me doesn't sound too unreasonable, but of course I submit myself to the unhealthy snack or few drinks, but generally I buget that into my calories. Petite powerhouse, can you recomend any changes to my diet?

Oh I completely agree I'm not fat, but gaining 10lbs in a year on a small frame tends to feel like a lot, and is generally uncomfortable...esp when none of your pants fit :(. I just want to know what I'm doing wrong in terms of weights because when i did them, my pants got tighter...I recently got the new rules of lifting for women book and it looks pretty intense, so I just want to see wha t I'm oding wrong before I get into it agian....thanks for the reply!

I think I'm gonna do it! Since its in writing it has to be done now. I've been trying to lose a few lbs and the only factor that i havent been able to change is the drinking. I'm drinking less, but still having about 6 drinks/week is not more. And man thats like 6-700 calories (if taken with diet soda) - not counting the food you eat after!! I'm totally down for this challenge, and its a short month so it should work out quite well. :) Good luck y'all.

Hey - ok Im short too, and i've always felt that our bodies don't adhere to the rules of the AVERAGE person. Is it okay then for us to under eat by 100-200 calories? Ive always wondered that. If I have to eat my BMR akak 1200 cals to lose 1lb a week (which was calculated for me on a website), does that mean that because I'm a bit smaller I wont necesarily go into conservation mode if I go under that 1-2 days a week?

Hmm thanks, my trainer just told me that today too about weight lifting. I am eating between 1100-1300 cals now. My indulgence days are around 1700 which is my maintenance. But I'm eating way healthier now than I ever have been and I just keep gaining. The math just isn't adding up...I feel like I should just eat what I want becaue eating 'clean' really has made things worse so far....

When I was at the doctor, and weighed in at 101, she said I was at about 20 which is perfect....not underweight, at this point i just want to focus on not gaining anymore...

I'm about 5ft, 100lbs, looking to lose 5-7lbs....how many calories do you ladies eat? How active are you? I find it really hard to find a balance btw calories as a small person!! My BMR is 1250 and to maintain I need around 1750 - its so easy to go below or over if you don't count EVERY morcel or excersize!! I'm trying my best to eat around 1400 then get in about 1-200 cals of excersize burned a day...lets hope it worksQ! Good luck!

Weight Loss Starting to think its not about diet and excersize.... Jan 01 2009

Lafoutloud: Oh I totally understand your frustration....and you should definately get tested if you have a history of irregular periods and ovarian cysts. On a brighter note, I got my period yesterday! Woot woot! Thats 2 mnths in a row! However - this made me sort of re-evaluate my situation, and the eating. For the past 2 months I've been pretty much eating maintenance, and not putting that much effort into measuring my portions. I would just say to myself, well, I han have a bigger portion because I have to up my cal intake. Which leads me to believe I've been eating more than I probably should. Which also makes me cry a little in my soul because  its pretty much my fault. I am just noticing that I have nights where I say fu*k it and snack, and pick and all that stuff adds up when to maintain you only need 1700 cals. Soooo...I was thinking of trying a low G.I liestyle NOT diet , which I heard is successful for weight loss and PCOS symptoms....feel like jumping on that bandwagon with me?

Happy New Year!!

I really appreciate the thoughtful replies - I haven't started birth control yet  -and I'm afraid if I do, I'll gain MORE weight! I didn't have an eating order before, I ate pretty much whatever I wanted, I was just a LOT more active and really never had time to sit still. I had a perfectly regular period even when I was at my lowest weight of 90lbs and not on the pill. I'm thinking I might have to test my thyroid. Because I'm seriously at a loss. I feel like I'm putting so much effort into it, and I'm sure like many on here, it is just so frustrating to see your efforts not only not work , but work AGAINST you. Lafoutloud, I've seen some of ur posts, we're really similar, what have u tried?

I wasnt so much upping my cals but stopped the binge eating and restricting that made me gain the inital 4lbs. Has anyone out there had their thyroid easured? I don't have all thysymptoms, but this unexplained weight gain ad loss of period might attribute to it...

In tel aviv - experience the night life. Theres a club there called Laila, gorgous, right on the beach overlooking the water and has these cool swings to sit on inside. Tel aviv was a bit too hectic for me so I didnt spend much time there - but if u can, definately hit up a club.

Hey hey, I was in Israel last summer for three weeks, and it is probably best to start out drinking the bottled water, they have huge bottles everywhere like HUGE for you to carry around. I made it most of the trip just on bottled water, but it is good to slowly introduce yourself to it so that incase you 'acidentally' drink some, you don't have an adverse reaction to it, and you should be fine. At this time of year it isn't REDICULOUSLY hot there, especially in Jerusalem, Eilat is always pretty hot, so be prepared if you will be there. Make sure to take advantage of the dairy, fruits and veggies, its some of the best in the world - and if you have the time, go to Sam Booki in the old city (on Ben Yehuda street) for some sick rogalach :P Israel is NOT the place to cut corners in terms of food. I gained 5lbs while I was there and enjoyed every minute of it!

but how do you know when you are getting enough calories? I don't ever remember eating this much on a regular basis....maybe its because i can eat MORE now that im choosing healthier foods...but no matter what number of cals i eat, i still gain! How will you know when you have reached your set point without gaining a million lbs?

I've experienced the same thing...I've been gaining steadily, first form starvatin mode and now from upping cals. It seems no matter what amount I eat, not only can i not lose or maintain - but I gain!! What the hell is going onhere? My question is, what do you do if your body doesn't seem to be stabilizing? I'm trying to stick to the 1500 cals for about a month and see if i maintain on that...but i cant stand to gain anymore - and ive been saying that since july and since then have gained an additional 6lbs. Its making me sick.

Well, in taking Lala's advice, I got my cals up from 1100-1300 to 13-1600 (which was wunnderful), and I'm down 1.8 lbs from Saturday! So I'm gonna try taking that advice and eating my maintenance and make a 2-300 cal deficite by excersize...its kind of expensive eating that much, but I'll try to have more cal. dense foods.

Thanks for all of the thoughtful replies, I need the support. I definitely screwed up my metabolism, because for the last 5 or 6 years the weight was falling right off and i didn't count a calorie. Now all of a sudden, after restricting and bingeing and that whole wonderful cycle for about 6 months my body is ANGGGRYYY. Since July ive been repairing my eating, trying never to go below 1200 (I'm 25 by the way), and I'm still steadily gaining. The Supposed waterweight that is said to melt off, hasnt...and has in fact multiplied as of this morning. I don't weigh myself very often, only once every 2 weeks, and im disapointed every time. So I'm trying to take it slow now, and eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full but a lot of it is psychological now and my relationship with food has definately changed. Guh. I thought those days were over in highschool, apparantly not.
