Fitness Mental/Emotional shift from losing weight to building muscle May 19 2009

I'm 6'1" started 227lbs and in the last 12 months I'e dropped a stack of weight.  I'm now 178lbs but my goal weight was 169lbs.  I've been lifting heavy and eating very clean for 12 months - I'm no longer worried about 'goal weights' I can look in the mirror and see where I need to be.

I've been on a deficit so I'm not kidding myself that I've put on any great slabs of muscle but I've got some terrific definition (IMO lol!) and really its only over my abs that I'm carrying any fat.  My body fat has been coming down but my weight hasn't - I don't care and I reckon when you get to where you are seeing it, you probably won't either.

9.5lbs of lean muscle is a lot of muscle, especially for a woman.

I hear you... I've gone from back squatting 25kg to 130kg sets over the past six months and I've lost an inch from each thigh.  But I've got some great vascularity starting to show up.

Unfortunately I carried my weight around my belly - and even that's pretty well vacated the premises.

Your a bloke - you should never put off resistance training.  Tongue out

You aren't going to build muscle while you are eating at a calorie deficit.  I've got pretty similar stats (except I'm taller - 185cm) started at 103.4kg in June '08 and down to 81kg now.

When you go into muscle building you are likely to put on some fat when you are building (i.e. bodybuilders phase it - cut and build phases).  Its really a matter of what is your target - do you want the fit(ter), (more) athletic look or would you like to be bigger (for you)?

I am about 3kgs away from my target weight, when I hit that (about six or eight weeks away) I am going to try and build some muscle (concentrating on upper body) by going through a building phase.

You really need to set your own goals.  And adding whey is going to add calories so you need to decide whether you can/or how you can include them in your calorie budget depending on your goal.

I tried the 100 pushups... got to where I could do about 60 (about four weeks in) and just got bored.

Its a fair workout though.

I'm about three kgs from seeing abs but:

On lifting days I warm up with situps to failure on the deep incline bench with fingers on nose, then I do my lifting which includes military press and heavy squatting.

On my gym (x2) cardio I start with situps to failure (I'm up to 30) with 20kgs of dumbells behind my head; then I do the death row by Tabitha; then hypers to failure (about 25) with 8kgs of dumbells behind my head; then after I finish my cardio; I do hanging knee lifts until I cans hang on no more.

I was thinking of telling those blokes knocking back 5K calories and spending three hours a day working on building muscle to just chop off their bollocks, eat on a deficit and learn to spell mesomorph.

Would seem to save them lots of time and a small fortune on additives.Tongue out

how do you just relax and know that you've put in the amount of time and effort you need to when you work out?

Dude, when you walk out of the gym after lifting as heavy as you can, you'll feel your workout.

That or you notice the bar bending when you were squatting or deadlifting.Tongue out

To the OP - only someone who doesn't live with a fussy eater asks this (and I know as I thought I'd be king of the kitchen).

My 5yo eats just about anything and is right into the healthy food thing but the 2yo will NOT eat anything he doesn't want.  He eats next to no junk but if he decides he doesn't want it then God himself couldn't shift him.

Melkor is a lifting zealot (reckon even he'd admit that) but I also think he's pretty close to the mark both through personal experience and everything I've seen and read.

Fitness interval training Nov 27 2008

I've moved onto the interval training this week.  I do my usual 5km and then do a stair run there once a week and I'm doing an interval program on a rowing machine twice a week.

I was surprised how long after I'd finished I was still feeling it - I'm hoping it will yield results like those flagwavers for it claim.Smile

Weight Loss Tips on how to avoid eating when your bf/spouse is? Nov 26 2008

Original Post by awiita:

I am shocked with the reaction from one post. So, I'd like to end it on this note. If what you do in your home works for you, keep it that way. If your husband likes to cook, he should cook. But I am a strong christain who believes in what the Bible says about women. They should surrender to their husbands and yes *gasp* wait on them. If you don't like to do that, then thats fine. I'm not living in 1952, I'm 18 years old and I am mature enough to know what works for my relationship. Sorry if I offended anyone, but I felt offended from the replies to my question. I only asked for tips on how to avoid eating with him, I did not ask for advice on my relationship. Anyway, I am very sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, I'm just old fashion I suppose.

Hope we all can let it go,
-Adrea

Sister Kath who taught me grade three and four home econ would have literally slapped upside the head any of us boys who thought we had a right to be waited on and figuratively any of the girls who thought Christ was nailed to a cross just to put them in servitude.

And she might have been only 4'9 and 70yo but she was still the best footy coach in the school.

Without wanting to sound like a flirt (or sleaze), you don't look like you have a "fat thighs" problem but a body dysmorphia problem.

There would be plenty who would wish your "problem".
