What Cereal is best for low cal & low GI
Hi What cereals are best for low cal & low gi ,i love cereal but want to make the right choice sick of eating boiled eggs and bacon for breakfast every moring so would love some ideas, thanks.
Since I don't know in which country you are in, to gather which brands are available there, I'm gonna say "Kellogg's All-Bran FLakes", "Kellogg's All-Bran Hi-fiber" which is available in most the majority of countries.
Kellogg's All-Bran FLakes: Serving Size 40.0g, Amount Per Serving Calories 121
Kellogg's All-Bran Hi-fiber: Serving Size 40.0g, Amount Per Serving Calories 113
Fiber One - 60 calories per half cup, and ~12g fiber. Of course you'll need more food than this for breakfast!
Special K protein plus - I like the taste, sort of sweet-ish. 100 calories per 3/4c, incl. 10g protein & 5g fiber.
Or hot cereal - steel cut oats are probably the lowest GI, but regular (not instant) oats are good too, and quicker to cook. Oat bran is also good, it has a different texture (& more fiber).
'Low-cal' is determined by how big an amount you serve up. Cereals tend to be quite similar cals per ounce, you'll find. The ones marketed as low cal just make up the shortfall with something nasty.
'Low GI' is determined by the fibre and sugar content. The simplest cereal would be oats and that has no sugar and lots of fibre.... so Low GI. Other cereals you can judge by looking at the nutrition info on the packet. Less than 5g sugar per 100g and it is a 'low sugar food'. The higher the fibre content per 100g the better.
I like Shredded Wheat 'n' Fiber. You might also check out the line made by Glucerna, which are products for diabetics so will be low GI.

copy/paste this (hope I put it right) lol but look for the following on the label and you'll be fine :)
Really, cheerios was on the list? If I eat a full serving (a cup) I can barely get full from it. Personally, I like Kashi Go Lean Crunch and shredded wheat. If I eat whole bran or something like that, I like to put some cinnamon and splenda on it to spice it up.
If you are looking for a high fiber breakfast, you may also like pancake/waffle/muffin mixes that fiber one and other companies make. They are made from wheat flour and have more protein and fiber. You may also like some whole wheat toast with peanut butter or some sugar-free fruit preserves.
Totally agree--Fiber One is amazing. Fills me right up in the morning and keeps me regular :D
Thanks a million for all your replys ye have made it alot easier picking a good cereal , cereals can be very misleading sometimes you think u have made the right choice until you look closer at the fibre / fat etc , also its very hard only to eat the recommended amount on the box !!!!!!!!
i love all kashi cereals..the new vive is good, total cereals are good also, lots vit. and fiber n stuff..also kashi oatmeals are nice when it gets colder..Ive been eating one of the trail mix cookies with tea if a quick breakfast is needed..adding fruit to any of these may provide a more full feeling..there is also the good ol standby english muffin with topping beware peanut butter packs calories so best to keep it to 1TBSP or less.. and omit butter. Egg beaters are a great low cal protein source also. HOPE this helps lil..
you know what i found ?
every kind of cereals have the same amount of cals
coco puffs has 110 cal in 27 gram
coca rice krispis has 120 cals in 30 gram
cheerios is the same and also is kellogg's is the same
so i think choose whatever you like and enjoy it
but if you want the fiber i think oatmeal is the best choice
I eat a FULL bowl of Coco Puffs everyday.
Dry breakfast cereals are high GI, even if they aren't sugared. They are made of dried cooked dough (rice, wheat, corn, whatever), and have a GI like bread, tortillas or crackers.
The way you reduce their GI is to add less digestible or indigestible things to them, such as bran. This dilutes the flour and sugar, reducing both the GI and the calories.
Some people don't care for bran buds, grapenuts and bran flakes, though. Me included. I mix bran with oats and cook them together.
The other way you can dilute the GI effect is to add some protein. Are you up for topping your cereal with tuna or tofu or nuts? It'd be better for you than dumping sugar on it.
