Cereal is my drug / addiction

Quote  |  Reply

I just can't help myself from it!!

So I stopped buying sugary cereals cause I eat the entire box in one sitting every time.

But I can't help it if my roomates buy it and keep it in the kitchen -- everytime I walk in, I eat some, and sometimes 1/2 the box.... just one handful turns into wayy too much.

I really don't want to be like, hey can you guys keep your cereal in your room cause im a cereal psycho/addict?

Urgh, it ruins my day everytime! Why do I have no control... my hand just reaches for it everytime!

Instead of having it dry can you add milk to it so that you feel more satisfied? Do you feel when you eat 1/2 box it is cause you are hungry, stressed,or bored and maybe finding healthy outlets. I believe in moderation but sometimes until one gets to that point switching to a different type of cereal may help.

i actually eat my cereal dry so that i DON'T binge on it. I dont buy sugary cereals because i would have the same problem, instead i buy kashi go lean and measure out a cup every morning and eat it dry so i dont go through bowls upon bowls (if there was milk in it, it takes me a short amount of time to eat). don't touch your roomate's cereal just think of it as someone elses food that you can't/shouldn't eat.

I CAN SO RELATE TO YOU!

I ADORE cereal, all kinds, be it healthy or sugary. I just cant stop at one bowl. I can eat a box and still want more. It is just so good...

There should be a cereal-junky anonymous group.... it's like a drug.  Sooooooo delicious.

I SOOOO agree with sugarshocked!?

it is like a drug they are just so muchable and sweet....damb you cereals =(

Hi, my name is theholla, and I'm a cereal addict. I've had to stop buying it because things get a bit...dangerous when there is cereal in the house. I have started making my own granola (less sugar and more protein than the stuff from the store) and portioning it out in advance for the week. That is the only way I can control myself!

My name is sugarshocked and I am an addict.  It has been one hour since I last ate cereal, but I really want to get help this time... I have learned that pre-portioning does not work for me, as I eat 4 pre portioned amounts at once.  I need a clean break.

I have one idea:  could you either buy pre-portioned cereal (those ones in the tiny boxes) or buy a regular box of cereal and the first thing when you get home portion the cereal into 3/4 cup or 1 cup into ziplock bags.  I think it's probably easier to binge out of 1 box then having to go get another bag, and another bag, and another bag.

Another thing, are you getting enough protein?  You could try upping it and seeing if your still  crave cereal/carbs so much.

You could also buy really filling cereal, like fiber one (which if you binge on YOU WILL PAY...it has 14 gm of fiber per 1/2 cup.  binge = diarrhea, extreme stomach pain, etc) or Kashi GoLean, which has lots of protein and fiber.

I love cereal too...now we only buy raisin bran crunch (which isn't as bad as some of the other ones).  I only eat it occasionally.

Try the glass of water trick to help curb your appetite...down a full glass then eat cereal with milk.  You'll get full, fast!

the only way is managing to control your addiction ! :\ I did it (not cereals, but chocolates, fruit, and so many other things!) and I can say you will feel like you can beat the world when you accomplish that! But it takes a lot of willpower! It will be easier if you eat something else, but first of all you have to educate your hands, mouth, brain and stomach not to want so much cereal!

holla, could you share the recipe? I have a home-made granola recipe but it turned out too rich (buttery) and too sweet.  Thanks.

broom closet, try making it harder/inconvenient for yourself to have the cereal.  After you take a handful, roll up the bag nicely, tuck the flaps in and put the box back in the cupboard (out of sight out of mind).  Do this every time.  The annoyance of having to do this everytime might be enough to make you not want the next handful.  (I know it's kind of lame, but it usually works for me)

I used to loooove cereal but I don't really care about them anymore, because I discovered new things that I enjoy more! (oatmeal, nuts, yogurt...etc)

ROFLMAO!!!!!! LOL TOO FUNNY!!!!!

I think most cereals are addictive because of the sugar. Cap'n Crunch, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Cookie Crisp are three MAJOR culprits of mine. I usually buy Kashi Go Lean, it's easy to stick to the one cup serving. (I do not add sugar!) Good Luck fighting this off, it's a tough one!

Oh, I remember that feeling so well, it's like it was yesterday. Sit me in front of an open box of Honey Nut Cheerios with a carton of cold milk and I could mill through the whole thing without even feeling full! I eventually started putting the box away after pouring out a single (weighed) bowl and no matter how much I wanted more, I would make myself resist. That plus switching to Sultana Bran Flakes certainly has helped me get my breakfast portioning back under control, but there are days when the best thing ever would be to munch through that box of sugary sweet goodness til I hit the dust at the bottom.

I wonder if there's a Cereaholics Anonymous meeting around..

I probably shouldn't be saying this, since the room is full of cereal junkies, but there is a place in Philadelphia called Cereality. It's a restaurant (or cereal bar, if you prefer) that specializes in what else: Cereal. That's all they serve is cereal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, anytime during the day you could go in and be like a kid in...well..a cereal store. They have all flavors of cereals, and oatmeals too. You can have them mixed up any way you want, with whatever ingredients they have in the restaurant. The people who make up your cereal to eat are called "Cerealologists". I hate to do this, as I don't know what to expect next, but here is their link:

http://www.cereality.com/main.php

...and here are the nutrition facts for cereality:

I don't doubt the calorie content for the cereal mixes they make are high. Just eating a bowl of sugary sweet cereals is bad enough. But you have to admit, whoda thunk of having a cereal-only restaurant that allows you to run wild with different concoctions and combinations of cereal and other ingredients??

On a sad note, I found out when I got onto the Cereality website that the Philadelphia location closed up. Couldn't believe that one , as they were near Temple University, and of course college students + late evenings study + cereal as comfort food = much dinero.

I'm horrible! I ate 4 boxes of cereal in the past half a week....

I know, its not a balanced diet at all!!

Would it really be that bad to just eat cereal all the time just cause I want to.... :P

I wonder if I'd ever get sick of it!! But I guess nobody gets sick of their drugs/addictions eh....

Whenever my boyfriend isn't going to be home for supper because he is working late I always get excited because it means I get to have cereal for supper... sad I know. He knows I have this problem then when he gets home he always asks what I had for supper and laughs at me when I am trying to stumble my way through a lie about grilled chicken breast and veggies.  Hes the only reason I am able to stick to balanced suppers!
