I am starting the "new rules of weight lifting for women" book soon, which I hear encourages drinking a protein shake after weight lifting. I have never made a protein shake before and I have a couple questions:
Is there a way to make a protein packed shake w/out the expensive powder? (Can't think of anything with a lot of protein to mix off hand... milk? yogurt?) If not maybe I can substitute something else high protein instead of the shake??? (I haven't actually read the book yet so not sure)
And what brands or where do you find the cheapest protein powder? My brother said GNC has a buy one get one on the whey stuff on the 1st of every month, but it's like $60 for one!!!! ***heart attack***
I bought my whey protein and it DEFINITELY was not $60. It was $30 for a huge tub that I've had for months.
i got my first whey protein jug (it was pretty small) and i was using it sparingly, but then i went to the drugstore of all places and they have huge tubs for like, 25 bucks. so shop around: health food store DO NOT have the cheapest protein powder. mine was so pricey because it was all natural (apparently a lot of them have arificial sweetneers and rpeservative, mine doesn't. the onyl difference, but it costs over twice as much for less than half. food for thought though. haha). i guess it depends on whwtehr or not you mind the chemicals/preservatives
bodybuilding.com has cheap/good stuff! I get the LeanBody mix b/c it's in individual packets...and the best tasting stuff you can find! It's good with milk and some frozen berries (I get the vanilla ice cream flavor).
Also - many shake recipies only call for a couple of tablespoons of the protein powder depending on what else you put in them, such as oatmeal or peanut butter. Those huge jugs you reference last FOREVER! :o)
This is one thing you do not want to go really cheap on. Remember, this is going into your body.
I have tried quite a few protein powders, some i had very adverse stomach reactions to (no details) , some tasted terrible. The one i use now is optimum nutrition (double double chocolate tastes the best) it has enzymes to help your body process the whey and it has one of the highest protein contents per gram.
It is about 40 - 50 dollars for a 5 pound jug and usually lasts me a month. I have two protein shakes daily however with 2 scoops each so....depending on how much you are having you could make it last.
After having tried a few - my recommendation is buy the protein powder first based on the protein content ... and then second on taste ... if you don't like the taste of it it won't matter how much you spent on it you likely won't use it .... And for me, I would recommend that you use a blender no matter what the package tells you about it be 'shakeable' ... Protein shakes always taste better from the blender and really cold!

This is exactly what i did, also checked reviews and such.
I use a magic bullet to mix mine and i usually add skim milk and fruit and a chunk or two of ice..
