Cheese - the good, the bad and the ugly.

Hi

I know i'm supposed to be losing weight but i love cheese!  i like it sliced on toast or with some pickle on some oatcakes...

So, i particularily like Gouda and have looked it up - it's slightly less calories than Cheddar per oz... which is a good start.  And my other favourite, Brie is even less again... (cheddar 114cal per oz, brie 104cal per oz)

So the question is, does anyone know of a hard cheese that has less than 100 calories per oz, tastes good and slices well for a sandwich?

(And before anyone says just eat less, i am already slicing it particularily thinly and only eating about 100 cals of it every other day.  I also believe cheese is an important part of a woman's diet to prevent osteoporosis in later life).

Sargento makes a low-cal provolone cheese that is 50 calories per slice.....I really like that. I haven't tried Laughing Cow yet, but I hear their wedges are low cal and make for good spreads for sandwiches.

i love parmesan its 110 per oz but i buy the rly finely greated 20z packs and it goes such a long way for a tiny little pinch! I have it on pita pizzas and 5g (1/5 oz) is more than enough and comes in at 24 cals.

I agree with windra - parmesan or romano are great options because they are so flavorful that you get the taste without using the same quantity you would with other cheeses. Laughing cow is ok - however - it's soft so it's not what you were asking for.

I personally don't like low-fat cheeses - I feel like the texture and taste is off - texture is more like play-dough and the taste is so muted that I would rather keep the cheese off than waste the calories at all. Or I'd rather use a better quality cheese with lots of flavor - just less quantity.

i believe swiss is pretty low and great for sandwiches!

One ounce of President Fat Free feta is 35 calories.  It's a crumbly dry cheese with a tart flavor, but it can be sliced carefully to put on a sandwich or crackers.  It's no good for grilled cheese, though, because it doesn't melt well.

I like the low-fat versions of cheddar and swiss and mozza, actually prefer them in many cases...they are much less greasy to melt. On a sandwich or crackers, though, I prefer a "real" cheese, so both have their place. I love that brie is relatively low-fat for a cheese, since it's so yummy!

There is a hard cheese called canterra that is naturally low-fat and is sharp and delicious. I can find it at specialty cheese places, not regular grocery stores.

Also I love the low-fat cream cheeses on crackers, plain or flavoured, and Laughing Cow wedges are great for portion-control!

I guess I am an equal-opportunity cheese lover :)

Goat cheese is 80 calories per ounce and you only need about half an ounce to get the flavor. It's crumbly or it can have at texture close to brie - you can spread it sort of. Plus it's very tasty. It doesn't melt though!

goat cheese also works well for a greekish type grilled cheese sandwich!

or, i'd suggest going to the vegetarian section of the grocery store. they have fake cheese there (that's possibly made from soy?) and if you find a good flavored one, it might work as a good taste-alike supplement.

I love cheese! I think Kraft's fat free shredded mozzarella and cheddar is pretty good for low cal cheese. The "naturals" kind melt really nicely. I like laughing cow light swiss. 35 calories and it is wonderful on sandwiches.

I am a cheese snob. I like the low cal stuff, but give me full fat, high calorie cheese please! I eat it every now and then. Like yesterday. I had some wonderful hard deli swiss and some smoked white cheddar. So good!
