Chicken broth / boullion
i was just wondering... do you consider chicken broth or those boullions appropriate for a vegetarian diet?...i mean it's not like it has actual beef in it.
and aren't vegetable soups in chicken broth?
i know there are some exceptions. like some people don't eat gelatin, but i still do and that doesn't make me not a vegetarian.
anyway, what do you think?
Gelatin is an animal product. That would be like saying you eat beef but that doesn't mean you're not a vegetarian. Same thing for chicken, beef, and seafood stocks. They are made from animal products.
And no, chicken stock and beef stock are not vegetarian, by all means.
I think the question most vegetarians ask is - Did anything have to die to make this food?
Of course there are many other reasons for vegetarianism, including the desire to cut back on animal products because of health concerns. It's up to you to decide what's acceptable to your own philosophy.
Uhm.. -_____________________- Um. Um. I don't even want to say anything to that. But. But.
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH STUFF DIES IN ORDER FOR US TO HAVE FRUITS/VEGETABLES?
But at least it's usually the critter's fault for getting in the way in those cases. x__________X
no chicken broth is made me chicken..... so no, if your a vegetarian eating chicken broth wouldn't be much of any different then eating a chicken.... which obviously, would make you not a vegetarian.
it's hard to know what soups are made of when you go out sometimes. some places say some don't. but if your making soup you can easily just use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth. it's the same thing as far as cooking soup goes.....
also for gelatin, most vegetarians dont' eat it because it's still parts of a dead animal... it's the boiled bones, tendons, hooves, leftovers basically all ground together and boiled... if you don't want to eat meat, but that doesn't bother you... then well, okay... but in general, most vegs avoid it.
feanor- there's plenty of ways around meat dishes around the holidays :) don't know how long your brother has been a veg, but if your family knows and maybe he even brings something it's no biggie at all. i'm always stuffed to the brim at holiday dinners and don't want to think about how much i gain over the holidays, and it's far from just desserts! in fact i barely eat the desserts :P
stuffing (not from in the turkey, luckily my family doesn't do that or makes a dish outside the bird anyway), potatos (i don't add gravy or bring a can of cream of mushroom soup as gravy), sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, creamed every other veg i can think of, biscuits, etc. etc. i usually bring my own veggie burger but half the time i don't even get to it.
Believe me, we try our best.. we make a separate veggie main dish for him too. the main problem comes from cookies or pudding mixes, or preservatives in the canned/boxed stuff.. when they have all those cunningly named trace ingredients. What I meant was if you eat THOSE once in a while then it doesn't mean you're suddenly evil..
Last year we had all the typical stuff, plus chick pea casserole and veggie gravy. I think it went over well... I ate more of the casserole than anyone else though.
I just always wondered about this.
i think gelatin is just the most commonly known. i've known about gelatin for a long time now. i just recently found out about "rennet" in cheese though. i'm sure there's more.
feanor- gotcha ;)
i think there is a lot of tricky little stuff (i saw another thread "surprise it's not vegetarian!) but the basic stuff that says chicken or beef right in i don't think a vegetarian is going to knowingly consume.
reading all of this...
i'm definitely not using chicken stock anymore. not a big deal.
and i don't remember the last time i ate gelatin...
idk why i said i did.
so i'm sticking to dairy, veggies, fruits, nuts, and veggie burgers =p
VEGETARIAN.
since when is chicken broth and boullion vegetarian?
and why do you have to be so rude about it?
Unfortunately some people just love to be rude.
Don't stop asking questions though! Not everyone is rude!
IMO, avoid meat products if you can. There's no need to buy chicken broth (which is 50% fat per calorie even if it says that it is 99% fat free) if you have access to veggie broth.
But if you're out and about eating at a restaurant or a friend's house and their veggie soup uses chicken broth (just an example) or their whole wheat bread has egg in it, don't worry too much about it too much.
That's my take, people can label me how they want.
I use organic veggie buillon cubes (I forget the brand but they have herb, vegetable and mushroom flavours). EDIT: the brand is HarvestSun - you can search on it.
I am wondering why vegetarians don't eat gelatin but they eat eggs and dairy, which are obviously animal products (obviously I'm distinguishing from vegans here...). I guess it's because the animal has to die to make gelatin whereas it doesn't to make eggs and milk?
Where is gelatin used (other than in Jello and marshmallows - where else should I be on the look our for it???)
