Chin & Neck, Hashimoto's, Cushings, hypothyroidism???
I have been wondering a lot more lately about my huge chin & neck after a few people asked me if I had a goiter. I've met so many people who weigh about the same as me or a good bit more, and NONE of them have ever had a neck/chin as large as mine. I barely have any facial definition b/c of how large it is and this is the single most thing that bothers me about my weight.
Upon doing some research online the only people I can find who look similar to myself are those with either Cushing's disease or Hashimoto's disease (Forms of hypothyroidism.)
My question is: Do any of you out there suffer from any sorts of things like this? And if so, what can be done about it? I've tried calling a few local endocrinologists to see about having tests done (they say it's a simple blood test) but so far you have to have a referral to even see them and none have a pay system (I have no insurance). I simply can't afford what they are charging and I don't have a doctor... again, b/c of cost and no insurance. Why do they always make it so hard for those seeking to find help but who aren't rich???
Anyways, just hoping to find someone informed about these matters who can shed some light. My picture is up on my profile page so you can see what I'm talking about with the chin/face thing. Hope to hear from someone, thanks.
Hi Julie!! As someone who also thinks they are battling thyroid disease, I can understand how you feel. I live in Canada, so the doctor situation is a little easier. I get tested frequently, but there is a "zone" .. a high point and a low point and I'm within that range so my doc won't take any further action. Meanwhile, I battle with energy and weight fluctuations. I've done some studying on the diseases also and have read about Cushings and Hashimoto. I don't believe I have those, so I can't help you there. What I do know though, is, there is only 1 way to relieve the symptoms and issues of thyroid disease and that is through medication. So, even if someone here does confirm your suspicions, you won't be able to do anything about it until you do get a doctors help. Another thing is, if you are able to get under a doctors care, and get the right meds, it will also help with all your other weight gain. I hope and pray you will soon be able to find a doctor and the meds that you can afford. Hugs to you!!
