Chinese food estimate?

Quote  |  Reply

So today was my cheat day, but I'd still like to have a rough idea of how many calories I had. Could I get a guess on how many this is, please? =)

1.5-2 cups "tempura chicken" in a peanut-butter like sauce. (1000?)

2 cups broccoli and a little chicken in brown sauce. (500?)

1 cup "tempura chicken" in something like sweet & sour sauce (400?)

3/4 cup un-battered shrimp in a creamy coconut sauce (400?)

1.5 cups white rice (350?)

2 small fried cream cheese rangoons (250?)

1 tbsp duck sauce (90?)

Your estimates are pretty accurate. At least you made it a worthwhile cheat!
Thanks for the response.  I only went five or six hundred over what I burned today, worth it for how good it was. Laughing

rice 300 cal , rangoon 106 (50 cal fat) I can't find chicken tempura, but 3 shrimp & batter are 320 calories.  sweet & sour sauce= 300 cal. peanut sauce (Satay) 140 cal per 1/4 cup. shrimp 20 per 2 tbsp, coconut sauce 40 per 2 tbsp. broccoli 100 calories, no idea what the brown sauce could be.  what is duck sauce?

Thanks.

Duck sauce usually comes in little packets, like soy sauce, when you get take out Chinese.  It's orange and gel-like.  The peanut sauce I'm sure was a lot, because I could tell it way mainly peanut butter.

Way to go!!!  I like that you are acknowledging your ingestions with grace and confidence and you're pretty acurate there on the  calories too!!  I was reading an article about Chinese Food a while back and the big culprit is the massive quantity of sesame oil that almost everything is prepared in.  The "tempura" will soak up all that stuff too.  Generally, people will way underestimate what they think they are consuming in calories  for chinese food because they think they are having vegetables and chicken and rice, but it is so much MORE!

I think its wonderful you had an enjoyable meal.  And 600 over your cals burned is not the end of the world.  Your post will probably help others who are still in denial about the amount of calories chinese food has.  You really have to be an astute requestor of foods that are "steamed" "broiled" "No MSG" etc to have a meal that is actually lean but it can be done.

PS: I am a Chinese Buffet Piglet and for the time being, I am just steering clear of them!! Laughing  I do love my chinese food though, and have found this great Chinese 5 Spice sauce at Trader Joe that has zero fat and 30 cals per tablespoon.  I stir fry chicken and veggies using 1-2 tablespoons of that and to add additional moisture, I use a tablespoon or two of the Trader Joe Ginger Soy Broth in the boxed soup areas.  Voila!  Works really well and I did not need to use any sesame oil in the pan.

I miss Sweet and Sour PorkCry
