Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to tortilla chips that are low in calories and good with salsa.

Cut a pita into 8 pieces and dry it out in the oven.  Makes a great chip.

You can also sprinkle some spiced on them for flavour.

If you want to try fruit salsa give this recipe a try:

I haven't tallied the calories yet, but I'm guessing it's not too bad if you do a few alterations.

I cut up pita and put it in the oven to bake.  No oil or anything.  It's the deep frying that gets ya with the tortilla chips.  They are my weakness.  I also chopped up some whole wheat tortilla and baked that as well.  Homemade tortilla chips are ALMOST as good as the store bought ones, but without the extra fat calories.
I haven't tried these myself but if you have Trader Joe's near you, they just developed a flat pretzel that's basically all crust and is low in fat and calories and meant for dipping.  There's another company, Stacy's I think it is, that makes something similar - a pretzel chip.  If you can't find that, then pita chips are always good for dipping, especially if you make them yourself from whole wheat pita bread.  You can also dip low-fat Wheat Thins or whole grain Kashi or other whole grain crackers.

I found the best tortilla chips in the world!  The brand is Mexi-Snax and they have different kinds, but I'm on a low-fat and low-sodium diet so I buy the Sesame kind and they are soooo good!  They even taste salty, but they're low in sodium.  Here are the nutritional values for 15 chips:  140 calories (70 from fat), total fat 7g, sat. fat .5g, no trans fat, no cholesterol, 70 mg sodium, total carbs 18g, fiber 2g, no sugars, protein 2g.  They are all natural with no hydrogenated oils.  Try them!  I get them at my local Frazier Farms healthfood store.

I found at Costco a brand called Food Should Taste So Good Multi Grain Chip(cracker)  Tortilla chip made with Flax, Sunflower and Sesame Seeds, Oat Fiber, Brown Rice, Quinoa, and Soy. They are yummy!

1oz serv 10 chips 140 cal, Fat 7 Sat Fat 0.5 g Choles 0 Sod 80mg Carb 18g Fiber 3g Sugar 2g and Prot 3g

Guiltless Gourmet Tortilla Chips have anywhere from 100-120 cal for 18 chips (depending on the type). Or, trader joe's tortilla chips have 120 cal for 2 oz.
Have you tried the baked Tostitos scoops?  They're low cal and pretty much taste like the real thing.  You can find them at any supermarket or mass retailer.

I recently found gourmet vegetable chips at my local grocery store, made from taro, parsnip, and two other root vegetqbles, they are very good with salsa. 21 chips= 180 cals.  I search all those weird dark little corners in the grocery store now,. I've found some neat items, like sugar free toffee and blue potato chips (also low cal)
How about baked tostitios or pretzel crisps. Both are gooood.
Aren't pita chips and tortilla chips about the same in calories?  Breads are relatively high in calories so it doesn't seem like corn chips would be all that different other than less fat.  Anyway I still eat regular tortilla chips but try to stick to just one serving (1 oz) which isn't very much.
If you're really wanting to go low-cal, then try dipping celery sticks in salsa. It's quite good really!

Go there! FAST haha they are giving coupons for COMPLETELY free regular size bags of chips i went and got mine today they are realllly good =]
All great ideas.  I'm excited to give them a shot.  Thanks for all the help!

I make my own tortilla chips. Go to the grocery aisle and look at the nutrition info, get the lowest calorie tortillas you can find. Yellow corn tortillas often have fewer calories than white corn, don't know why.  I can usually find a package that is 100-120 calories for 2 tortillas.

Cut your tortillas into 8ths. Lay on a cookie sheet in a mostly single layer and bake at 325 - 350 until crunchy. You can then have 16 chips for 100-120 calories. They are much more filling than the ones you buy pre-made, so you eat less of them.

If you want, spray with a quick shot of cooking spray and sprinkly with popcorn salt (it's much finer) before you bake.

So i tried the baked Pita break and it was not only awesomely delicious, but also a lot more filling than regular chips.  One pita cut up into small triangles was a perfect amount.  :)

We also tried two different types of tortillas.  One was a wheat tortilla and it came out kind of chewy, but the Jalepeno tortilla came out really good.  Both were about 100 calories, so good and filling.

Tortilla chips and salsa can be easily fit into a low calorie diet!:)
Just buy the light version of tostitos! They are in a bluish bag, they also have them in doritos and ruffles.
Its like 70 calories for an ounce which is pretty good.
And most salsa is low cal.
rice cakes?
I really like pretzels with my salsa. On the border-my favorite salsa. Has enough ground cumin to really give it a bite. New mans taste like runnnnnny marinara sauce. Completely and utterly gross.
