A friend told me that chocolate's anti-oxident properties speed your metabolism. This doesn't really make sense to me.  Has anyone else heard this?

Dark chocolate perhaps, but not milk or white chocolate (which isn't even chocolate at all.) But I think it's such a small amount, it doesn't really mean anything at all. Plus, the process of making chocolate takes out some of the bitter flavor of the cocoa (even in dark chocolate) and the chemical that has the bitter flavor is the chemical that has anti-oxident properties.

But, I could be wrong!
Dark chocolate. If it's 70% cocoa or more, it's dark chocolate, and should be slightly bitter. It's very yummy.

"Even if adding a piece of dark chocolate is your wish, go for it, one square at a time, as it aids in happy brain chemistry and adds a natural bitter which aids digestion. Improving digestion this way also strengthens the liver, kidneys and lungs, all which facilitate a healthier metabolism."

I read this in the New England Jornal of Medicine ...And it has some chems that help craving during your TOM.....But stick to the dark...
not just dark - it should be good quality chocolate and at least 70% cocoa like nasuoni said.  if you can find organic chocolate, even better (expensive, though).

Even if it does, the question is... does it speed up the metabolism ENOUGH to negate the calories in the chocolate? I don't think so. Otherwise, chocolate would be a 'free' food, and could be treated like it has no calories.

For example, 1oz of dark chocolate (70%) is about 170 calories. Unless that chocolate speeds up your metabolism enough to burn 171 extra calories, then it is useless as a weight loss tool.

haha anyone thinks chocolate is weight loss tool is fooling themselves!  \Personally i enjoy milk chocolate and indulge frequently.  I dont try to kid myself about health benefits though!
its more like the caffeine would speed it up... but like mos tof you said...don't kid yourself, sure have a square or two of dark natural chocolate, should satisfy your sweet tooth.....
What about cocoa powder??? It's high in fibre and protein, but I have no idea if it has any antioxidant properties...
Okay, it may SLIGHTLY speed up your metabolism, (yes it only is dark chocolate) but how much it speeds up your metabolism may not be worth the calories it holds.
