How did you choose your goal-weight?

Did you chose it based on a desired BMI or what? What were your influences in deciding your goal?

Anyone at all??

mine came from my personal frame of reference.  i'm 5'8" and my adult weight has ranged from ~120 (in my early 20s) to 168.  the lower end of the range is not only clinically underweight, it's unrealistic.  i've been working toward 135, and may try for 130, depending on how i feel when i get there.

I decided mine by how my build is...I am muscular (if you shave a lot of te fat away) hee hee! I am not willing to look grossly thin. healthy with my curves still.

I am 5'3'' roughly and its ammazing how the same weight looks differently on a few different girls who are 5'3''.

Do whats natural for you. Where you feel healthy and your body looks healthy.

I chose my goal weight based on a number of factors:

  • It's a round number (10 stone = 140 pounds)
  • It puts me just barely inside the "healthy" BMI range (BMI=25)
  • It's what my mum (who's the same height as me) weighed at the time.  She also wants to lose some weight, but she is smaller framed than me and is therefore likely to be able to reach a lower target weight.  When she was in her 20s, she was teeny tiny in a way that I'll never be.

My goal weight is really just a number though; weight is much less important to me than size and feeling healthy.  My real goal is a 30" (or less) waist.  If I could get to that while still weighing 150, I'd be happy.  I'm almost there - my measurements are currently 39-31-37 (down from 43-37-39; I am not and never have been a pear).

I personally picked a BMI that I felt comfortable accepting and I also found this amazing calculator that gives you your ideal weight based on what others find attractive, I now have a goal weight with a 3 pound range, although my goal is to gain weight ultimately. I don't recommend using BMI though, I am recovering from an ED and mentally I just can't trust my body the way I should so it gives me comfort to do it this way. I would recommend taking into account your bone structure, muscle mass, and your weight history. Sometimes a certain weight is not attainable for certain individuals and even if it is then it requires too much maintenance to stay that way, you don't want to force your body into submission for the rest of your life. Look up "happy weight"...this will give you an idea about how to gauge your target. You want to be able feel comfortable in your own skin, not freak out over an occasional slip up, and be able to maintain with a moderate amount of exercise. Anything beyond that is going to be difficult. I am not at this point yet, but it is my recommendation for anyone who desires to lose or even gain weight. Hope it helps!!

I picked my goal weight based two things.  It was near the middle-weight for a healthy BMI and it's the same as the lowest I've every known myself to weigh.

My goal weight picked by this site is 123 but I know from experience that that is not a good weight for me. I have a large frame and while I'm only 5'2" I can pack on a lot of muscle mass. So naturally I picked my goal weight from a time that I felt most comfortable with my body which was when I weighed 134.

I have a pretty far way to go though as I'm currently 230!

I chose a weight that would give me a BMI of 24, give or take. I basically just don't want to be classified as overweight anymore, and figured this would give me a nice 1-point "buffer." Also, I know it is something realistic I can achieve, since it is the lowest weight I have been as an adult! Depending on how I feel when I get there, I may try for 5 pounds more.

I chose 150 because it was a nice even 50 lbs from where I was.  I'd like to drop another 15 after that, but if it doesn't happen, and I'm happy with my body, that's fine.  135 was the lightest I ever was in high school, and that was while I was competitively rowing, and essentially starving myself to get onto the lightweight crew.  If I can get to 135 healthily, it will be my new goal if I'm not happy at 150.

My doctor has given me the thumbs up at 135-150 based on my build (even though I'm only 5'2, I too carry a lot of muscle)

Calorie Count chose mine, and while I'd love to get down to 122 at 5'2.5", I'm not sure I want to.  It would mean a total of 100 pounds lost, but it seems so tiny to me.  I'm comfortable at the size 9/10 I'm at now.

I'd rather be at 132.  Ten pounds above where Calorie Count wants me, still 90 pounds lighter than what I was in 2006.

I have a goal weight range. 153 is the upper end - the weight I was when I joined the Air Force; 135 is the very lower end - the weight that I was once told was my goal when I did an in-person weight loss assessment.

153 is my no negotiation goal; 145 would delight me because that's pretty much my lifetime lowest adult weight; 135 might just be too low and I'll take it pound by pound from 144 down.

My dietitian did a body mass/fat ratio, and said my goal should be about 185 (I am female, age 51, 5'9").  I know this sounds really heavy to a lot of others, but right now I am 198 and wearing size 12 jeans.

My BMI currently says I am "moderately overweight" and I still have 13 pounds until goal.  I think what everyone else says is basically true - what weight is comfortable and sustainable?  Unless you have severe body image problems, you know the weight that is right for you.

"You don't want to force your body into submission for the rest of your life."  Thank you, Chrissy!  I hope that the goal for all of us is freedom from the obsession with food and weight.  If we just trade one obsession (compulsive over or under eating) for another (weight maintenance as a life-excluding hobby) then we have missed the point, I think.

I just chose mine cause i used to be that weight before and slowly gained it over 2 yrs so i want to be back to that weight

I chose 165 because at that weight fluctuations won't make me go over the army height/weight standard.  After that, I'm going by pant size, not weight.  If I start losing strength, I'm stopping at that point.

When I started losing, my first goal was just to get in the 'normal' BMI range.  As I get closer to a weight/body that I'm happy with (5'4", 135ish), I want my driver's license not to be lying to the world anymore (130) Wink

When I first started dieting I didn't really have a target weight. I just decided to start counting calories and see how far down my weight would go. When I got down to 120 I decided on a goal weight of 115 pounds. According to BMI calculators, the lowest healthy weight for me was about 112 so I wanted to get fairly close to it, but not so close that I was in danger of dropping below it.

I already have a weight-loss goal. I was just curious about how everyone else chose theirs.

Anyone else want to share?

I was not overweight according to BMI but I was in the higher end of the normal weight range, had a little flab that didn't need to be there and just wanted to get in optimum condition. Anyway, the way I originally chose my goal weight is kinda funny - and not something I would tell people (except for over the net) - but what I did was I looked up Scarlett Johansson's weight and height on the net (looking at various sites to get the most commonly listed record), calculated her BMI, and made that BMI my goal.

I decided to try for the same BMI as Scarlett because, like her, I have an hour-glass body shape and am on the shorter side so I thought her BMI would be realistic for me - plus she looks amazing, obviously, and I wanted to be slim but still with some nice curves.

I chose 128 for my ultimate goal, because it is BMI 20.  Really I am just forcing  myself to stop there because I will be "Ideal" and I know I can force my brain to know that I am a slim and stunning individual when I hit 20.  I feel good about how much I've lost (175 to 142) but my brain still says "look at those thighs!"  Which was why I continued past  my original goal of 150.

So basically my goal is to say "You know what thighs?  I am IDEAL."

But really, once I get to 135 or under I will be very happy.  135 is the last weight I remember being happy with.  If I feel comfortable there I will probably stop.
