choosing not to weigh..

Quote  |  Reply

Is there anyone here he has given up on the scale and has decided to stop weighing on the scale and stick strictly to measurements? I usually weigh on my wii fit board but I don't trust its accuracy. I'm 138 on the carpet and 142 on the hardwood floor. I went to a friend's house for the 4th of July and weighed on her scale and I was 143 on the carpet and 145 on the hardwood floor (this was before I enjoyed myself on Saturday).

Another thing about weight....Does anyone not look their weight? People were asking about my weight loss and I told them how much I weighed and they didn't believe me because they thought I weighed less.

I'm so glad you posted this topic!

I'm going by measurements. I've only been on the CC site one week....didn't weigh myself to start and didn't weigh myself at the end of the week either. I have to admit I have a love/hate relationship with the scales....I tend to obsess when I don't lose and I just don't want to go there this time. I may not know my exact progress but I've got a closet full of clothes that will tell me all I need to know. For now anyway....

I dont weigh myself or go by measurements. Most people like to have proof or pics of their results but im not into that. The one thing I hate the most is when I wake up in the morning, I feel awesome and then that feeling goes away when I look at the scale and see that it has stayed the same. As long as my pants get looser and I can notice a change in my body then I am happy. I dont need numbers to satisfy my happiness

So if you don't weigh yourself or go by measurements, then how do you know how many calories your suppose to take in order to loss weight? With CC, it focuses on weight to determine weight loss.

I also weight myself with wii fit. I think it's very accurate. I would always weigh myself on a hardwood or tile floor. When I was in AZ for thechristmas I weighed myself on my sister's scale on the carpet and it said I was 193. Then I weighed on hard tile and the thing said 235. Same scale. So I tried again on the hard tile the next day and it was still 235. When I got home I weighed on my mom's scale on hard tile and it said 234. So I was 235.

4 Months later I weigh myself on wii fit and got 220 (was on a reduce calorie diet with no increase in exercise). After that I picked up 2 x 25lb dumbells (50 lbs) and weighed myself again to test accuracy and it said I was 270. Pretty accurate if you ask me.

So my point is first the wii fit is very accurate and second if you don't weigh yourself how do you know how good or how bad you are doing? I guess it's ok if you only worried about size and muscle mass but not body fat percentage.

I dont even own a scale. I go entirely by how my clothes fit. Works great.

Hi Y'all

you know, I am seriously going to throw out the scale because it depresses me. I have been on this site since 6-4-09(but had already been exercising and eating healthier about a month before joining) and have been staying within the guide lines of my calorie intake to loose weight. exercising faithfully. Every time i got on the scale, about once a week, it would show no weight loss. But I kept going thinking,"ok,building muscles, losing fat". Well on the 7-4-09,it showed i gained 3 lbs. From what? I recently stepped up my cycling and elliptical to a total of at lease 70 minutes a day.5 days a week. Still nothing after 2 months

Can I hear some encouraging words to keep me from giving up! Has anyone had this problem before. At least the cardiovascular benefits keep me going...for now. Just gets depressing not seeing the scale budge or budge the wrong direction.

Girl, if you are staying within guidelines, exercising, and you've lost weight you are doing everything right! I would do a new BMI calculation to make sure you still need the same number of calories per day. If you are still within guidelines, I have a word for ya that disgusts me but works to get over a plateau....water. Drink lots of water everyday - it'll flush your system. (Then throw out the scales!) :)

Good luck!!

Two things.

Ditch the scale and get a heart rate monitor which will calculate your calories that you burn throughout the course of your exercise program. Find out what your zones for 60-80% of your maxium heart rate should be. Stay within 60% for fat burning and go up to 80% if you're looking to kick up your cardio a notch.  Pulse makes great easy to use HRM's that do all the work for you. One pound of fat is approximately 3500 calories, so you'll have to do some math to figure out how many calories you'll need to intake for the rate of which you're expending them at. Secondly, keep that food journal on Calorie Count and record absolutely everything that you take in, and record your activity levels. Try to be deficient the 3500 calories by the end of the week through a healthy combination of exercise and diet.

I definitely like Chelslaw1984's comment, its true though. Why bother with a scale when you can feel what feels good and right. Its just a number. For me, a recovering ED girl, the numbers on the scale will just scare me further. Feeling healthy and strong and fit is what I'm about these days.

If you're not seeing things come off the scale as quickly as youd like, re-evaluate what you're doing and make modifications, but be patient. It takes years to add the weight, so you can't expect it all to come off in 30 days or less right?

I just recently gave up the scale.  For 2 weeks it didn't budge not a fraction of a pound but I was feeling better.  When I went to meet with my nutritionist, who also doesn't believe in the scale, and he calculated by body fat %.....I had lost 7 pounds of fat in those 2 weeks.  So scale begone and take with you all the frustrations and disappointments you brought with you. :-)

I go through spurts. Sometimes I will weigh myself every morning. Then I won't for like 2 weeks. It is depressing when the scale doesn't move, but it is very motivating when it does!

I know what you are saying about not looking your weight. No one (even my husband) believes what I weigh--they say I look much lighter. Thanks, I think...

thanks for the advice, i have been doing all the calcs and 60 to 80%heart rate zone thing. I had been drinking water, but maybe not enough. I have decided to break up the biking into 2 sessions and plus a 20 minute elip.bike light effort for a hour, moderate effort for 25 min and light on the elliptical(even though it feels like vigorous to me,lol). If i can just see it move 2 lbs down,it may motivate me more. I cant give up, need to get that BP down.

I know what your saying about people thinking your lighter than what you are. Everyone thinks i am 175 to 185. they'd be shocked if I told them i was 225. My own best friend is the only one that knows and she didnt believe it when i broke down  and cried about it. I just keep in mind when i do get down to 175, they'll think i'm less....will let yall know how the double session work outs go

thanks everyone!

Bleu

Well i think it depends, Are you wanting to look better? Or just say you way a certain weight? I usually don't over worry with a scale, just watch how your body looks and acts.
