Christians.....I have a Question?

OK, first let me put you in my picture.....

I was raised as a Christian until I was fourteen when I decided after some considerable thought that I no longer wanted to be a part of something that was and is in my eyes so hypocritical. As I sat there on my last ever day in church half listening to the apparent glory that is god, and looking at the people around me I just couldn't get it out of my head "what a bunch of hypocrites"! with their big flashy cars, posh houses, bragging about what they bought last week and how much it cost, standing outside damning them down the road for the way they live, what they wear etc. You do something bad, go to confession and tell a bloke who wasn't even there that you are sorry, he gives you 2 Hail-Marys and an Our Father and your saved....I'm not buying it.

What makes me laugh is that those who say they believe in god, think that that makes them a good person....why? I don't believe in god and I'm a much nicer person than some devout christains I know.

What makes you think that because you tell some person at your church that you are sorry for somethings that you are automatically saved?

How many of you can say in all honesty that you don't repeatedly break one or more of the.....

SEVEN DEADLY SINS (CARDINAL) for those not sure what they are (in short)....

  1. Lust...excessive sexual desires.
  2. Gluttony....over consumption of anything to the point of waste.
  3. Greed....acquisition of wealth, anything obtained by disloyalty, betrayal. for personal gain.
  4. Sloth...sin of sadness/despair, apathy, depression, failure to utilize ones talents/gifts.
  5. Wrath...hatred, anger, denial of the truth to others/self, revenge, spite.
  6. Envy...the desire to have something someone else has, to deny that person of having it because you want it.
  7. Pride...the most deadly of all because it is the ultimate source from which all the others arise from. Excessive love of self!

It is these 7 things that turned me away, because nearly every single person in that church that day committed at least one of these on a daily basis, but that's OK because they confess to them every week....or do they? Then go out and do it all over again.

What is it that makes you believe that you can repeatedly commit these Deadly Sins and be continually forgiven for them, but the rest of us are damned?

*NOTE* This is an open topic for those for and against, everyone is entitled to their opinion and that opinion although open for debate must at all times be respected. Thank you.

To be fair, wouldn't it be better to try to fix the hypocrisy of many people in your religion rather than reprimanding someone for pointing it out?

I think the seven sins are challenges of the ego.  In some religions, or beliefs, transcending the ego is an aim (whether there is a God - Christianism, or not - Budhism etc.)  People who go to church, get forgiveness for their sins, and then go back out and come back and do the same for the same sins next week are kidding themselves.

To err is human - we all will always sin, to forgive is divine.  To just err aimlessly the same way again and again is ignorance and a waste of Sunday morning.  But then we shouldn't judge either for we don't know everything.

We should have and show compassion (and forgiveness) for and to everyone.  Easier said then done though but it is what one aims for that counts.

You will - as we all will - continue to sin.  It is our efforts that count.

In response to that!!!!!!!!!........wouldn't it be better for her to fix the hypocrisy of many people in her religion than to write an offensive blog and giving up on her complete religion....Preach to both sides please ness!!!!

What is with all the zombie threads today??????!!!!
wouldn't it be better for her to fix the hypocrisy of many people in her religion than to write an offensive blog and giving up on her complete religion....

I'd say that's pretty much impossible.

And I don't see how her original post was offensive.

prettibrown, i'm curious as to what you think ness should have suggested.  clearly you think there's a "right" answer to anndjoe's question.  what would that be?

unwraps the bandages.....

prettibrown, your responses to this thread, were my exact reason for writing it in the first place. The holier than attitude of Christians. And it's not to me to change anyone.

Thanks santonacci, ness, ali, pg for standing up for me in my absence, those bandages were tight Wink

Why should she fix anything? She's not the one trying to assure us that not all Christians are hypocrites. Not only that, but she's not Christian. Doesn't the Bible tell you to take the rod out of your eye before you try to take the speck of dust of our your brother's eye?  You are a Christian, that is your eye.  Thus is it your God-given duty to keep your Christian brothers and sisters in line before you try to get on someone else.  We'll help you out, but ultimately its not our job.

On another note, the only thing "complete" about Christianity is its falsehood. I can go into this here or via private messages if you wish.

EDIT:

You're welcome, Ann.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I will pray for you, and God and Jesus loves you anyhow. You'll be pleased to know that today, I am not guilty of any above, and I pray that tomorrow will be the same. By the way, did you survey all those people in your church that day to come up with your conclusions? You must know a young man that I spoke with not to long ago that proclaimed all Republicans are rich. Do you attend the same church?

haha. i love it when people say they will pray for me. what a joke.

uh and usually republicans are rich. unless they have just been fooled by the religious right or aren't educated.

i can't believe that adults still believe in god and the bible, it's ridiculous and embarrassing. do you realize half of the **** that is even in the bible?? so many contradictions, the encouragement of murder and rape (king david) and just flat out weird stuff. (i mean come on, unicorns, ...it's weird. that is really clearly very odd.)

not that i'm trying to convince you that christianity is a hoax. i can never do that. you've been programmed with this for far too long. all i can hope for is that you just don't do any damage to others with your false beliefs.

i understand that some people just need to believe in something. because they are scared and need a security blanket. i wouldn't want to believe that this was the only life i am getting either if i weren't enjoying my life fully because i am being restricted by all of these nonsense holy laws. the world is full of inequality. it would be nice to believe that there is some big man in the clouds that will judge people for their action in life upon death.

but really i don't think anyone should count on that.

p.s. religion was created by the government a long, long time ago to control the masses. the laws that were/are made to put and keep the money in the pockets of the rich minority are generally the laws that are supported by the church. coincidence? probably, no.

oh, and christianity is based in astrology.

I heard this a long time ago and I think it applies in this thread:

"If you find a church that does not have any hypocrites, DON'T GO, because then it won't be free of hypocrites any longer"

I grew up in a Christian church and home.  Then, as an adult, I got sick (disease) and I got angry at God.  I still do not go to church faithfully.  One thing I didn't ever get mad at, though, was people being hypocrites.  I mean, you don't have to go to church to find hypocrites.  They are everywhere, in the places we work and the places we shop, they are in our families, they are all over the place.

I don't care if it is religion or anything else, if you look at other people you will be disappointed!  If you hold someone else up and expect them to be perfect you will be disappointed every single time.

Just some food for thought.  No one is perfect and if that's what you are looking for in a church, or if you are looking for a religion to be perfect you are a bit naive, in my opinion.

That would have been a very good response if you had actually got the point of what I was talking about!

All religions are jokes if you actually believe them word for word, and think they hold the actual meaning of life.

I think it's important to people because of tradition. I also think it should be taken for what it is, man made theories to explain existance.  I think they're interesting to learn about, but I also think people should take into consideration how long ago most of these religions were created, and how much less we knew about our surroundings then.

I definitely feel that scientific fact and logic should be a priority over what I feel is more of a myth.  This is why I feel that evolution should be taken more seriously, I don't think intelligence should be hindered because of religion. I think people's religions should evolve with the times, and take into consideration new knowledge that we have obtained.

It's sort of bizarre to me how people can believe something that has absolutely no proof, and shun other things that have tons of evidence to back them up.

What's wrong with being logical?

Actually, if you are talking to cavaliers, I thought she really did a good job of hitting on your point.  You were talking about Christians who are hypocrites.  He/she is basically saying that you are going to have hypocrites everywhere you go.  Doesn't matter if it is in religion or just in our daily lives.  Are you going to judge all people in a group based on just the hypocrites?

I cast Turn Undead on this thread.

I sear undead foes, push them back, and root them in place.

::rolls die::

Critical hit!

I deal 6d10 + wisdom modifier radiant damage totaling 73 times 1.5 for undead vulnerability to radiant powers for a total damage score of 109.

The thread dies. Pelor is pleased.

I was talking to cavaliers, and no they didn't get the point!

Contrary to what they think I am far from being naive, nor is anyone else who actually got my point.

I was talking about to put in blunt terms "Bible Bashers", those who do nothing but shove god into every aspect of life, swear that they live by the bible, repeatedly say condescending things like "I'll pray for you" (how dare they!)

then stand...........

judging her who lives down the road

don't want to associate with people for no other reason than you don't believe in god

pity people who they see as less fortunate than them

Look down their nose at you

Claim you are being offensive just because you don't believe in what they do.

etc, etc, etc

There are hypocrites, law breakers in all walks in life the difference between the two is that they don't try and come across as holier than now!

"Oh I would never do something like that!".....yeah right, since when did god elect them judge and jury of how people live their lives and what they do and do not believe in. Yes we all talk about her down the road, but just because we are gossiping, they do it because god wouldn't approve, so they think.

Just because I don't believe in god does not make me/anyone a bad person! but the people in the church I am talking about think it does...."you'll burn in hell for turning against god"!!!

yeah whatever.....I'll see them there Laughing

Main Entry: hyp·o·crite Pronunciation: \ˈhi-pə-ˌkrit\ Function: noun Etymology: Middle English ypocrite, from Anglo-French, from Late Latin hypocrita, from Greek hypokritēs actor, hypocrite, from hypokrinesthai Date: 13th century 1 : a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion 2 : a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings
— hypocrite adjective

-----------------------------

You said this was an open post and I did not bash you or your beliefs.  I was commenting on the premise of your original post regarding hypocrisy.  What you described in your post as your problem with the church is the definition above.

You asked for input and then bash me over the head when I reply in a very civilized manner.......I was not shoving Christianity at you.  I even stated that I have some problems myself - just not with the people.

Don't ask the question if you don't want to hear the answers.

Again, if you or anyone else looks to other human beings for anything you will constantly be disappointed.  If you even try to depend on YOURSELF you will be disappointed at times.

cavaliers, why are you hedging?  why not come out and say it?

I guess I'm just hoping that you don't lump all Christians into that category.  I'm a Christian.  I don't "bible thump" people to death.  I associate with many people who don't believe in God.  I don't pity people.  I don't look down my nose at people.  I think I'm very tolerant.  This is what Jesus taught and this is how I try to be.  Many of my friends and family who are Christian are the same way....then again, there are some who are not.

I guess it's kind of like the stereotype thread that we had not too long ago.  I'd like to think that people would get to know me before lumping me into some stereotypical category simply because of my religion.

OK, lol, maybe I'm a bit foggy today.  You can't always tell what a person means when you don't actually hear them.  Are you being sarcastic because I did come out and say it?  Or do you think I'm hedging?  And if so, about what?  Again, pardon me for not getting your post.

clearly you're skipping the big finish: if we depend on other human beings or on ourselves, we will be disappointed.  if we depend on god, we won't.  right?  i'm just wondering why you hesitated to finish, when it was so clear what you were saying.
