Christians.....I have a Question?

OK, first let me put you in my picture.....

I was raised as a Christian until I was fourteen when I decided after some considerable thought that I no longer wanted to be a part of something that was and is in my eyes so hypocritical. As I sat there on my last ever day in church half listening to the apparent glory that is god, and looking at the people around me I just couldn't get it out of my head "what a bunch of hypocrites"! with their big flashy cars, posh houses, bragging about what they bought last week and how much it cost, standing outside damning them down the road for the way they live, what they wear etc. You do something bad, go to confession and tell a bloke who wasn't even there that you are sorry, he gives you 2 Hail-Marys and an Our Father and your saved....I'm not buying it.

What makes me laugh is that those who say they believe in god, think that that makes them a good person....why? I don't believe in god and I'm a much nicer person than some devout christains I know.

What makes you think that because you tell some person at your church that you are sorry for somethings that you are automatically saved?

How many of you can say in all honesty that you don't repeatedly break one or more of the.....

SEVEN DEADLY SINS (CARDINAL) for those not sure what they are (in short)....

  1. Lust...excessive sexual desires.
  2. Gluttony....over consumption of anything to the point of waste.
  3. Greed....acquisition of wealth, anything obtained by disloyalty, betrayal. for personal gain.
  4. Sloth...sin of sadness/despair, apathy, depression, failure to utilize ones talents/gifts.
  5. Wrath...hatred, anger, denial of the truth to others/self, revenge, spite.
  6. Envy...the desire to have something someone else has, to deny that person of having it because you want it.
  7. Pride...the most deadly of all because it is the ultimate source from which all the others arise from. Excessive love of self!

It is these 7 things that turned me away, because nearly every single person in that church that day committed at least one of these on a daily basis, but that's OK because they confess to them every week....or do they? Then go out and do it all over again.

What is it that makes you believe that you can repeatedly commit these Deadly Sins and be continually forgiven for them, but the rest of us are damned?

*NOTE* This is an open topic for those for and against, everyone is entitled to their opinion and that opinion although open for debate must at all times be respected. Thank you.

Oh, gosh, no, pgeorgian.  I have a very hard time with God.  I lost my health and was totally bedridden (I'm better now) and have questioned every bit of Christianity, the Bible, all of it.  I won't go so far as to say that God does not exist, but I've been dealt some pretty hard blows in my life.  Things that happened that I always thought God wouldn't let happen to someone who was living a Christian life.  I'm coming around, somewhat, but it's a very hard struggle.  No, I definitely feel I've been "let down" by God - sometimes I feel bad saying that, but, I guess I still believe enough that I feel that He knows my thoughts whether I say/type them aloud or not.  I'm just being honest with myself and my feelings.

No, I was honestly just commenting on the FACT that people will always let you down because no one is perfect, including ourselves.

Good grief......

cavaliers....I was not attacking you.....you missed the point of the thread I explained it.....if that offends you well that's something you need to deal with.

peaches.....what has made me laugh with this entire thread is that all Christians who replied assumed I/we were talking about them!? I/we are talking about a specific group within Christianity.....and whether people like it or not they do exist.

I couldn't care less what/who people believe in, it's their choice.

I am not offended.  I was a little taken aback when you said you were not talking about hypocrites, that's all.  And backed up my reply with your original post as well as the definition.

I do feel you are a little angry.  I have been through enough in my life and been in these kinds of discussions enough not to take them personally.  We all believe what we believe and this topic can become quite heated.

I was talking to cavaliers, and no they didn't get the point!

Contrary to what they think I am far from being naive, nor is anyone else who actually got my point.

I was talking about to put in blunt terms "Bible Bashers", those who do nothing but shove god into every aspect of life, swear that they live by the bible, repeatedly say condescending things like "I'll pray for you" (how dare they!)

then stand...........

judging her who lives down the road

don't want to associate with people for no other reason than you don't believe in god

pity people who they see as less fortunate than them

Look down their nose at you

Claim you are being offensive just because you don't believe in what they do.

etc, etc, etc

There are hypocrites, law breakers in all walks in life the difference between the two is that they don't try and come across as holier than now!

"Oh I would never do something like that!".....yeah right, since when did god elect them judge and jury of how people live their lives and what they do and do not believe in. Yes we all talk about her down the road, but just because we are gossiping, they do it because god wouldn't approve, so they think.

Just because I don't believe in god does not make me/anyone a bad person! but the people in the church I am talking about think it does...."you'll burn in hell for turning against god"!!!

yeah whatever.....I'll see them there Laughing

Smile I didn't say I wasn't talking about hypocrites, the reasons I gave above are the reasons they are hypocrites.

I'm not angry, and i didn't intend for it to come across like i was, I'm tired due to the lack of sleep last night and possibly a little too the point with my responses.

So please ignore the tone of my words, they are not aimed at anyone my brain just isn't capable of relaying anything but the basics at the moment. Smile

I hope you get some rest tonight.  Have a good rest of the evening.

I was surprised that this thread was resurrected from the Zombie zone Smile and feel that it has now exhausted the debate........

To all those who took offence to it, there was never any intended, this was a healthy discussion between those who believe and those who don't......

Nor was this ever personal against anyone........

So I thank everyone who took part, but I will now be asking the moderators to lock this thread and allow it to go back to sleep.

Thanks Again Smile Ann
