I'm really worried.

How do you cope with christmas and all the family dinners and parties and drinking and candy canes?

I don't know whether I should explain to everyone that I'm losing weight and get made fun of while sulking in the corner as everyone else enjoys delicious food at christmas buffets, or should I just forget about my weight and calories for a week?

though I know that once I just gained everything I lost for the past few months, I'm going to get so discouraged and depressed. :(

Don't forget about calories, but don't sulk in the corner either. You can sample most of the food, just in moderation. Remember, this is a change in lifestyle - even when you reach your goal, you won't be able to go hog-wild at a Christmas party, so use this as a learning experience - how to eat modestly, even when you are surrounded by goodies.

Weight-loss isn't the full story.  Maintaining your new weight for life is.  And in life you'll be going to parties, lunches, taking holidays and other events where lavish amounts of food are on offer.  So you have to work out a way to manage things sensibly but still enjoy yourself at the same time.  'Sulking in a corner' sounds pretty miserable so probably not the way forward.

There are some easy tactics.

  • At buffets, take your plate to the selection, choose a modest quantity and don't go back for seconds
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with water... means you're not a terrible old lush and it cuts the calories
  • At family dinners, fill half your plate with any vegetables on offer before adding small amounts of other delicious foods.   Think 'dainty portions'.
  • Don't be frightened to say 'no thanks'  but don't mention weight-loss whatsoever.  People who whine on about how they'd "love some but I'm on a diet.... sob... so I can't.... sob... " are boring and pathetic
  • Be active.... take advantage of the holidays to go for plenty of winter walks.
  • Be realistic... maintaining your weight in the festive week may be a better idea than trying to actively lose weight

amethystgirl gave great advice.  Def don't forget about cals, but you can treat a special occasion as a maintenance day as far as cals go and budget in a few treats.  Get a workout in early morning before a holiday party, make healthy choices, eat moderate portions, and sample a few of your seasonal favorites.  No one will notice if you don't draw attention to yourself or make a big deal out of it.  :)

Keep your eye on the calories.  Nothing tastes as good as being THIN FEELS.  Holiday parties can be treacherous...eat ahead of time, as Jane stated stay close to the veggies and be mindful of the alcoholic drinks...they pack on the calories and are empty (but fun).

Be strong and remember your life choices.  It isnt a 'diet' (ewww hate that word) it is a new lifestyle.

I am making xmas day my cheat day I have one a week and havent had one in 2 weeks so that day I will eat like I normally would, than have alittle bit of everything I love at dinner and ONE piece of my most favorite dessert...it can be done. After breakfast I plan on going for a long walk so I wont be feeling bad at all that day. Have fun, dont stress just be smart.

I am planning to only eat the 'special stuff' on Christmas. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here so turkey's pretty rare. I'm just looking forward to the log cake, actually.

Like what gi-jane has mentioned, don't go back for seconds! Take a modest portion and enjoy it. :D

Moderation.

Ditto to what everybody else said...  but I add that getting depressed over eating is but one choice.  Choose to kick buttocks instead!

Otterly,

I read your bio before posting a response - please honey, don't worry too much about hte holidays ... you will be fine.

It's already been mentioned that moderation is key ..... I hope your goal is to have a healthy body and not just a skinny one - because no one would make fun of you if you are going towards a hgealthier eating style right?

Let go og guilt and depression - its held me captive for over 30 years nad believe me - depression is NO fun especially when its tied to the scale.

Be young, be happy, be confident, be accepting of yourself, and remember all things in moderation!

What you can do is like plan balancing your diets, if the family meals are (for example) 1200 calories, and your daily calorie consume is 2000, just eat the 800 throughtout the day so you can have the 1200 calories in the meal ;)

Forget about your calories and weight for a day!! seriously, you wont gain your weight back in one day. That would be pretty friggen amazing.

Maybe enjoy what others are having but in moderation. Like instead of having 10 christmas cookies, have like 1 or 2. Eat them slowly so you can enjoy them longer. Just dont count calories like "This sprinkle is 3 calories, and this sprinkle n this cookie is 4 calories because its red" uh...no! go for it. I wouldnt forget about it for a week ...but xmas day-have at it!!! :-) Drink some egg nogg and enjoy your xmas!! After that- go back to your diet.

Holy crap girl. Your only 110 lbs???

please, drink the whole damn thing of egg nogg and have 10 cookies an hour!

Yeah, I agree.  I think you should stop trying to lose weight at thispoint and go on maintenance.

Thankyou gi-jane and everyone for all your advice! I never thought of it that way! Maybe I really was stressing it out a bit too much earlier Embarassed

haha, I guess maybe 110 sounds really little when you write it down but it's not for me considering I also happen to be really short (and young), so I'm still, apparently "overweight".

i don't care how young you are 110lbs is not overwieght at 5ft 2, sounds to me a good weight. I'm 5ft 3 and 112lb im not even slightly chubby certainly not over weight and i can't imagine you are either.

Perhaps your a prime example of skinny fat ... very petite and a good weight but no muscle tone which makes you look flabby?? perhaps you need to gain alittle muscle in order to firm up rather than think about loosing more.

At 16, you could easily still be growing - please don't restrict your calories - you really do need them.

Darling, there is no way you are overweight, but I came on here with an answer for your question so I'm still going to post this, for you and anyone else:

At parties, you have to have something to do. A lot of us get used to eating and drinking, which are fun, but 3 hours of grazing sweets and fatty salty hors d'oeuvres isn't good for anyone. Solution? Busy yourself some other way. Be the DJ and keep the good tunes going. Organize a present swap or a party game. Gossip. Take pictures. Dance. Anything. Just have fun and keep busy! There's way  more to do at a party than chow down.

I hope that you come to love your body more. It sounds like you're a cute little package to me. However, my advice holds for anyone, so I hope you have a nice time at your parties this season!

Just to address the question and make no comment on whether you should or should not lose weight:  When you eat, concentrate on what you're eating and enjoy it.  Otherwise you can shovel down high calorie food without realizing how much you're eating or even really enjoying it.  Eating slowly at dinners gives your brain time to realize you've had enough before you over-eat.  Trying to save up calories all day for a big meal only means you arrive crazy-hungry at dinner and it's hard to control quantities or realize satiety in that circumstance.  Eat moderately the day of an event, and have a low-cal protein snack before you head out to dangerous circumstances.

The best weapon you have against over-eating is not being hungry.
