its too hot to wear pants and i am too prideful to wear spandex....
any chub rub stories or tips?
LOL - yep, I hear ya. Wear longer shorts. I get the long board shorts that come close to my knees so that I don't have any chaffing.
Or, if you absolutely can't handle wearing longer shorts then go get some sport slick and slime your legs before you start running so the friction is eliminated.
i seriously feel your pain on this one. seriously. ever since junior high school (i'm in my junior year at college now) i have been timid about wearing skirts and shorts in the summer because i know 1) i'm going to get a painful burn that will take a day or two to heal and 2) it is very visible. for running, i usually get workout pants and cut them off above the knee (thus, i go for kind of cheaper sweats-type stuff so i don't feel bad about mutilating my clothes!). i too wear the longer board shirts style in the summer or if i really want to wear a skirt, i either make sure i'm not going to be walking too far or i cut up a pair of stockings to wear underneath.
hopefully, soon this won't be a problem anymore!
i know what you're talking about!! it's terribly uncomfortable!! i am totally not for my butt being in spandex for everyone to see BUT i do like how my legs dont rub together in it. an idea you could try would be to wear spandex under a pair of light shorts, like soffees. helps the thighs to not rub AND you dont feel like you're putting it all out there!!
definitely go for the spandex, with or without the other shorts. I prefer the capri length simply because it doesn't look as bad (IMHO) as regular shorts on legs like mine! I love the way my jiggle is controlled by the spandex, too, and once you have muscle, it's like a firm embrace--a reminder of the hard work I've done!
when wearing skirts i go with leggings underneath them, it is a suitable fashion for us chubbies:)
Why you need Spanx Power Panties :)
I *hearts* them. They are tight fitting (but not like a girdle) and run down to just about your knee. You can wear them under shorts, wear them under skirts and dresses and *voila!* no chub rub. They also slim you in dress pants. One caveat: $30 a pair, but worth it in my mind.
Definitely go with spandex under another pair of shorts. I use to run the 2 mile in track and in cross country we would run any where from 4-6 miles and our coach actually made us all wear spandex, I think it was because he thought the guys would try to look down our shorts in warm ups, but it really does help with the chub rub. I haven't ran in years, I can't my knees are all ate up, but the last time I did on my own I wore spandex, it just makes me feel more comfortable when running where other people can see me.
Monistat makes a product that's an anti-chafing gel, I think it's called 'soothing care' or something like that. It feels like silky powder when you put it on. It does help when wearing a dress or skirt to avoid the dreaded 'chub rub' (love that nickname, ha!). You have to keep reapplying it though if you're walking around a lot. Maybe a good option when its 100 degrees and you don't want another layer of clothing under your skirt.
A couple of suggestions that work for me 1) cotton (with a little lycra) "bicycle shorts" (thigh length, but without any padding for real bicyle use) that I wear under my other shorts -- keeps the thighs from chafing but doesn't show off any assets. // 2) Johnson & Johnson first aid creme -- it has paraffin in it so it makes the skin more slick -- I think vaseline is too sticky unless the temp is just right // 3) anti-blister sport sticks. Bike shorts are my preference but it is getting more difficult to find the ones that are cotton or aren't all spandex. More expensive ones that are "wicking" from UnderArmor or Nike dri-fit are available too.
This is what I have always called Thigh Burn!
I found that putting antiperspirant on the spots on my inner thighs that tended up rub together prevented chafing- but don't put it in already chafed skin!
I like Body Glide, lighter than vaseline and better for running than shorts to your knees. It will last through a 40-50 minute run for me. The other benefit is that I can put it on my feet on the spots I tend to blister. I also get a little chafing on my under arms if I run in a tank or sports bra, not it the pits but toward the front where they rub as I stride and body glide fixes that too.
I'm not ALONE!!! My thighs have ALWAYS rubbed together, even when I played varsity field hockey and I'd wish I'd had these tips then! I hate wearing skirts because if I ever need to walk a long distance I'm in serious trouble, or have to walk like I have something up my but to keep them apart! Any suggestions for every day wear (the creams and such don't work too well in the heat for me, so any awesome underwear tips?)? I really want to wear cute short skirts (a little above knee length) but i need to keep my thighs apart! :D This is really helpful though, because I too am training to run a 5K and i can't be wearing pants in this heat!
OH THANK GOD, I'm not alone! I've been trying to get in the habit of running, but the first couple seconds I start... the shorts ride up and my thighs rub! It's so painful and embarrassing. I always have to pull them down when I'm running and it looks stupid.
I never thought about putting vaseline or other cremes on my thighs, I'm going to do that tomorrow! But another thing I do is buy cheap sweatpants and cut them to the knee - very cute ;) I also have these Victoria's Secret shorts that are super colorful, and I wear grey or bright-colored leggings underneath them. It gives me outfit a fun bright vibe, and I don't care if I look ridiculous :) I love wearing colors! But I'll try to the vaseline tomorrow!

Buy some Glide. It does not stain clothes and will lubricate your skin.
This is going to sound ridiculous, but a co-worker gave me this tip - anti-perspirant. Probably not for the running, but it works for me so that I can wear skirts in the office. Call me crazy, but it works for me. :)

I second that.
I recently saw an ad on tv for an anti chafing cream... can't think what it was called tho!
