Is cleaning the house exercise?
Asked by anonymous on Mar 28, 2009 in Fitness

Does cleaning the house fall under exercise?  l don't go to the gym or walk or do formal exercises but l clean the house for about 3 hours a day at moderate intensity.

Answer

Cleaning the house is physical activity but most people wouldn't call it 'exercise'.  Activity is classified as either 'exercise', performed to enhance physical fitness, or 'work', which is activity done to keep ourselves alive.  Cleaning house is work. But like 'exercise', some cleaning jobs are more intense, and so burn more calories. For instance cleaning that involves moving furniture burns more calories than dusting. Most cleaning is not usually intense enough to deliver a cardio-workout, but all movement is good. See how many calories you burn in cleaning at Calorie Count.
