I've noticed this for many years, my joints tend to click alot.

Doing some pilates this morning I just seem to click on every flex & bend. If I bend my toes or rotate my wrists & they click.

Is anyone else 'overly clicky'? As wonderful a party trick as this is, are there any exercises that can help?

Same here. Whenever I exercise or even just walk or run my knees and ankles ALWAYS click. Stretching, my wrists and lower back click. I thought that maybe I had a calcium deficiency or something since I don't drink milk and the only calcium I get is probably from yogurt or the rare occassions I eat cheese. But if anyone else has any suggestions on what to do or what the problem is I too would appreciate it.

I've always had clicky joints. My mum asked her orthopedic surgeon about it for me last time she saw him, and apparently it's nothing to worry about. It does get annoying though!

I don't know about exercises that can help, but I'll let you know you're not alone.  My knees were always clicky back when I was fencing and now my shoulder's clicky when I'm lifting weights.  Does yours hurt after a while?  I've noticed that if it's clicking and I keep doing shoulder presses it'll start to ache.

My latest is my left hip- when I'm doing bicycle crunches the ball and socket joint will make very audible pops just like if my femur was sliding out of joint and then back in.  Not painful but drives me absolutely nuts and I stop.

Yeah, I'm not helpful.  But you're not the only one. :)

Hahaha... I just had a big rant in my journal last night about my clicky joints, then I opened up CC this morning and saw this post.

I think Omega 3 is also supposed to help bones and joints, you can take a supplement or just eat more oily fish.

I don't know what can help.  Are you getting enough fat in your diet?  I've noticed my fat intake has been pretty low and I'm "clicky" too.  Its not a calcium deficiency b/c I get quite a bit of that.

I do eat olives & nuts quite regularly & have yogurt, milk &/or cheese every day.

I was once told it was a build up of nitrate in the joints (!?!?!?)

I think I may google this subject later! :-)

clicking apparently is a-ok as long as it isn't painful.

Every time my knees bend past 90 degrees - click.

My hips have always clicked and popped - and it isn't painful exactly - but feels very strange and uncomfortable. I too hate bicycles or leg lifts because of it.  Drs have just told me that this is because of extremely tight illotial (sp?) bands and stretching is "supposedly" helpful - but I have yet to see much difference in 10 years of stretching. For me it is just genetic alignment issues really and something to live with.

My aunt's ex husband is a doctor and I asked him about it once since my knees crack pretty much every time I bend them and he said it's not a problem, and it'll probably last forever. How fun!

Normally my cracking doesn't hurt but sometimes if it cracks the wrong way it can get uncomfortable or painful and I have to stop or readjust.

My ankles click constantly! I asked my doctor about it and she said I probably have "loose ligaments".   I really don't know anything about it, but she said it was not a big deal.

Oh, yes... my joints make really loud clicking sounds whenever I stretch or stand up after sitting still for a while...
My wrists crack when I rotate them, my fingers, my back, my shoulders make a loud popping sound (but it feels so good when they do that), my knees, sometimes my hips...

I get uncomfortable if I don't stretch once in a while... It can be kinda awkward when I do it at school - because it's so loud pretty much everyone in the room hears it... Embarassed

I've always been this way - it doesn't really change no matter what I do..

Could some of it be connected to me being able to bend my hands and fingers in strange ways?

Well, the sounds don't bother me - but I know some people always look uncomfortable or like they're in pain when they hear my joints crack

lol

My chiro told me that if it's always happened and it's not painful, it's nothing to worry about. But if it starts happening suddenly (my neck started clicking after a car accident - AND it was painful if it clicked out of alignment) then you should get it checked out. What the chiro did was to realign my vertebrae, and then there was no more clicking and I walked straighter, too. But it needs maintenance: in the beginning you have to get it re-clicked every week, then every month, then every few months just to make sure.

omg i dont know what your ages are but im just 14 and hve had this for as long as i can remember! hips, knees, fingers, wists, toes, ankles, back EVERYTHING! i'ts annoying and i always get funny looks. i have enough calcium and i suppose fat, being overweight or underwight didn't make a difference in me......

omg looked up that nitrate thing...i am ssooo tagging this;

What is that "cracking" sound when I get adjusted?
The audible popping sound is not your bones cracking or breaking. It is actually little nitrogen bubbles that build up in the joint. When a chiropractor moves a bone, it pops those little nitrogen bubbles and releases pressure from the joint. Picture a pop bottle...what happens when it you shake it up? Bubbles form and pressure builds up. Now open the cap and what happens? A chiropractic adjustment is like taking the cap off of a bottle of pop after it is shaken up.

The cracking sound is not the bones breaking, it is actually small nitrogen bubbles that build up in the joint. When a chiropractor manipulates a bone, it pops those small nitrogen capsules and pressure is released from the joint. A chiropractic adjustment is like taking the top off of a bottle of carbonated drink after it is shaken.

Can I get arthritis through adjustments?
Many people believe that "cracking" the hand knuckles causes arthritis. This is just a myth. This is, in fact, the way joints get nutrition, through a process called imbibition. Healthy joints are joints that move easily. If you are alive, rigor mortis will not set in! If a chiropractor finds joints that are not moving correctly, these cracking sounds are part of the process to get them moving again via manipulation. If the knuckles are excessively popped, this may cause some inflammation and ligament imbalance. "Too much" can be as bad as "not enough".

wow, its good to know im not wierd, cause im a clicker too! Like everyone else says, it doesnt hurt just gets annoying sometimes.

Thanks for that holbee. I was close - nitrate/nitrogen, it began with an 'N'.

I actually just remembered a good 'click moment' when I was at college doing beauty therapy. I was in a massage class having a foot & leg massage. The girl working on me did this toe flexing move where you gentle bend the toes back. Mine let out an almighty crack & this poor girl screamed because the thought she had broken my toes.
